Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke her own record and won gold again in the women's 400 hurdles; Grant Holloway and Daniel Roberts went 1-2 for the U.S. in the 110 hurdles. Tara Davis-Woohall of the U.S. won gold in the long jump.

Chi Chi Rodriguez, Hall of Fame golfer known for antics on the greens, dies at 88

Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez, a Hall of Fame golfer whose antics on the greens and inspiring life story made him among the sport's most popular players during a long professional career, died Thursday. He was 88. Rodriguez's death was announced by Carmelo Javier Ríos, a senator in Rodriguez's native Puerto Rico. Rodriguez said he learned to play golf by hitting tin cans with a guava tree stick and then found work as a caddie. He He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57 and joined the PGA Tour in 1960 and won eight times during his 21-year career, playing on one Ryder Cup team.

Cowboys' CeeDee Lamb responds on social media after Jerry Jones says no urgency in contract dispute

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' declaration that he "doesn't have any urgency" to resolve a contract dispute with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb drew an immediate response, with Lamb posting "lol" on social media. Lamb is holding out of training camp as he seeks a new deal. The 25-year-old Lamb is in the final year of his rookie contract after leading the NFL in receptions last season. Quarterback Dak Prescott — going into the final year of his own contract — delivered pointed support of Lamb following Jones' remarks. Drake Maye makes QB debut as Bill Belichick-less Patriots beat Panthers 17-3 in preseason game

(AP) — Drake Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, played one series in his debut with New England on Thursday night, and the Patriots played their first game in 24 years without Bill Belichick as coach, beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in a preseason game. France is headed back to its second consecutive Olympic gold-medal contest, after beating Germany 73-69 in the first of two semifinals on Thursday.

Growing number of NFL teams are deciding joint practices don't need to last beyond a single day

The first week of joint practices at NFL training camps already has included one player getting carted off the field and two teams getting fined $200,000 each for excessive fighting. Those events lent credence to the notion that joint practice sessions don't need to last longer than one day. The idea is growing in popularity. Over two-thirds of the scheduled joint practice sessions this year are one-day affairs. Nearly 80% of the 2023 joint practices lasted two days.

Caleb Williams will get his first preseason action against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears will use their starters in Saturday's preseason game at Buffalo, which means the first NFL action for quarterback Caleb Williams. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft and the other starters were held out of the Hall of Fame Game last week. There will be a limited number of plays for the first-team offense. Coach Matt Eberflus called it a good time for Williams to face a live rush and to try to run the offense without penalties or other mistakes. The team's offensive line health has improved since earlier in the week and the only O-line starter who appears unlikely to play is right guard Nate Davis.

Jets have Aaron Rodgers sit out their joint practice with the Commanders because of rainy weather

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers sat out the team's joint practice with the Washington Commanders as a precaution because of inclement weather. With heavy rain moving through the area at the start of the practice, coach Robert Saleh pulled Rodgers from participating. The 40-year-old Rodgers is coming off a torn left Achilles tendon that ended his season last year after just four snaps. He has been healthy, participated fully in every previous practice and looked good on the field during training camp this summer. The Jets and Commanders play their preseason opener Saturday at MetLife Stadium. Saleh previously said Rodgers wouldn't play in that or the second preseason game.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—The Wichita Wind Surge came up short 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion against the Corpus Christi Hooks at Whataburger Field. In a game where no-hit bids lasted as far as into the eighth inning, and a game-tying solo blast took place in the ninth, the Wind Surge failed to take game three of the road series.

Cory Lewis&nbsp;fell behind to walk the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first. After striking out the next two, he retired the next 13 consecutive hitters into the home half of the fifth when Jeremy Arocho pushed a roller back to the mound and beat out the throw to first. Arocho’s single became the first hit by either side on the night.

Logan Cerny worked a six-pitch walk in the next at-bat after Arocho. He stole second base and moved 90 more feet on an error after the ball trickled into shallow center. Four pitches later, while Lewis continued against Colin Barber, Cerny scampered home to score on a wild pitch.

Jake Rucker&nbsp;broke up the Hooks no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth on a ground ball that bounced away from the middle infield. Once Wichita was down to two outs in the game in the ninth,&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;socked a solo home run, his eighth of the season, to deep left field to equalize the game 1-1. Schobel has tallied three hits, all home runs, through the first three games of the series.

⚾ Wichita Wind Surge lose to Corpus Christi in walk-off

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — After more than four decades as the “Voice of the Bears” legendary broadcaster Art Hains is revealing when he will be stepping away from the headset.&nbsp;

Hains, who took over as the Bears play-by-play voice from 1977-1981, then again from 1985 to the present, says his final game will be when Missouri State hosts SMU to kick off next season on Sept. 13, 2025.&nbsp;

It will be the Bears first game as an FBS football program. He is also an SMU alum, graduating in 1977.&nbsp;

Hains has been a mainstay in the press box of Plaster Stadium and Hammons Field, as well as courtside at Great Southern Bank Arena. However, a diagnosis of West Nile Virus in September of 2022 has led to a difficult road back.&nbsp;

One that he admits has taken its toll.&nbsp;

In a release from Missouri State Thursday, Hains said:

Hains says he will still frequent Missouri State University sporting events, and other activities, and looks forward to a “bright future for the Bears.”

“As Ricky Ricardo once famously said ‘The time has come.’ And so it is for my time as Voice of the Bears, a title I have cherished for the last 44 years,” Hains said in a news release. “Unfortunately, due to my physical limitations, it’s become more difficult to prepare for and describe the games the way I once did. The time comes for everyone, and this being our last year in the MVC, I’ll just go out with The Valley.”

Hains is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame and Missouri State Athletics Hall of Fame. His comeback to get back behind the microphone to have a chance to plan his retirement has been nothing short of remarkable.

Stricken on Sept. 17, 2022, during a Bears football road game at Arkansas, Hains landed in the hospital two days later and was listed in critical condition. Within days, doctors shipped him to the University of Kansas Medical Center and eventually to two rehabilitation facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Hains was diagnosed with West Nile virus from a mosquito bite, which left him paralyzed and battling numerous side effects. He’s yet to regain full use of his legs, but with a motorized wheelchair, he’s returned to the Springfield sports scene by calling Bears’ home football, basketball and baseball games, and attending numerous other events as a sports fan.

The Marshall, Missouri, native credits his wife of 44 years, Lisa, son, Chris, and daughter, Kathleen, for his ability to return to the broadcast booth, whether at MSU games or Kansas City Chiefs broadcasts, where he is the studio host on the Chiefs Radio Network.&nbsp;

“Throughout this thing, I’ve been very positive that I’m going to come back from it, I never gave up getting back to Springfield and hopefully getting back to doing some things on the radio. I’ve thought that all along.”

“My goal has been to do the Chiefs and do some Bears games this first year. It’s getting close now and we’re planning on doing just that. Positive attitude meant a lot.”

Hains has been a longtime halftime and postgame host for the Kansas City Chiefs and hosts a daily sports talk show in Springfield.

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Noah Lyles lost the Olympic 200 meters Thursday, falling to Botswana's Letsile Tebogo, then being tended to by medics who carted him off the track in a wheelchair suffering with what The Associated Press learned was a case of COVID.

After crossing the line third for the second straight Olympics, Lyles fell to his back and eventually sat up to be tended to by medical staff. A person familiar with Lyles' condition, who did not want to be identified, told AP was diagnosed with COVID two days before the final.

It's the second straight Olympics the virus has played a major role in Lyles' trip to the Games. He also won the bronze in the Tokyo Olympics, and he has said the empty stands and the year-long delay before the Games led to depression that hampered his performance and inspired his road to Paris.

Tebogo, 21, led wire-to-wire and won in 19.46 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in history, but .15 slower than Lyles' top time. Kenny Bednarek finished in 19.62 for his second straight silver, and Lyles, four nights&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-olympics-100m-lyles-thompson-ccf37184afc2f3318271d4c495d2a16b">after winning a close-as-can-be 100</a>, ran the curve in 19.70.

Lyles came into Paris having not been beaten in a 200 since that night in Tokyo, and after his win in the 100, he brought the bronze medal to the press conference, slammed it on the table and said that had been his motivation for three full years.

Thursday’s final marked the second straight night Tebogo beat him to the finish line in the Lyles’ favorite race. Lyles' win streak ended when he finished second in the semifinal. After that one, skipped his traditional meeting with reporters to head to the medical tent. His coach said he was fine.

This time, Tebogo was leading as the sprinters reached the curve. Usually at that point, Lyles puts on his trademark close, but there was no strong finish — only a desperate push in to the line then a collapse onto the purple track.

This is the fourth preseason watch list of the preseason for Daniels, who was previously listed by the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award and the Comeback Player of the Year Award. His appearance on the Davey O'Brien Watch List marks his second straight season among the top returning quarterbacks.

The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The 48th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner honoring the winner will be held Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, this year's list was selected based on previous Division I career player performance as well as expectations heading into the 2024 college football season.

Daniels returns for his fifth season at Kansas in 2024 after throwing for 705 yards and five touchdowns in three games last year. In 2022, Daniels was a breakthrough player as he led the Jayhawks to a 5-0 start and the program's first bowl game appearance since 2008. He was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection after completing 66.1 percent (152-of-230) of his passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns. Daniels capped off his sophomore season with a record-setting performance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, when he completed 37-of-55 passes for 544 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown.

From Lawndale, California, Daniels enters the season ranked No. 9 in school history with 4,297 passing yards and No. 5 with 31 passing touchdowns. At his current career completion rate of 63.6 percent (365-of-574), Daniels would surpass the previous school record of 63.3 percent, set by Todd Reesing from 2006-09.

The preseason watch list features 22 seniors, 12 juniors and two sophomores. Daniels is one of eight quarterbacks from the Big 12 Conference on the list, which ties the league with the ACC for the most watch list honorees. The official Davey O'Brien Midseason Watch List will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and will contain active quarterbacks from the Preseason Watch List, players honored as weekly Great 8 recipients through the season's first eight weeks and any additional quarterbacks approved by the selection subcommittee.

The list of semifinalists selected from the QB Class will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Foundation will announce the three finalists two weeks later (Tuesday, Nov. 26). The 2024 Davey O'Brien Award winner will be unveiled live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — As part of K-State Athletics' continued effort to provide the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, all athletics facilities will be cashless venues starting with the 2024-25 season. Going cashless will reduce wait times while providing a faster and more secure payment system for fans. The change will also allow the facilities and staff to operate more efficiently.

K-State Athletics has transitioned to entirely cashless payment systems throughout its venues. This changeover includes the ticket office, concessions, parking, Rally House locations, gameday Cat Cushion purchases and other points of sale in the facilities. Fans can use traditional credit/debit card payment methods, while checks will not be accepted.

K-State team stores transitioned to cashless payments during the 2020 season, and most of the concessions stands were converted to card-only stations over the past two seasons. The main concession stands will also accept Apple Pay.

Single-game parking transactions in the East and West lots of the K-State Athletics Complex will also transition to cashless payments. ADA parking for football will continue to be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis when lots open five hours prior to kickoff.

Men's and women's basketball single-game general admission parking will now be available for purchase in advance of gameday through the K-State ticket website (www.kstatesports.com/tickets). Fans can also purchase parking using a credit card on gameday when lots open 90 minutes prior to tipoff.

Fans with season parking passes for both football and basketball will continue to receive a hangtag to display containing a QR code that will now be scanned upon entry into the lots.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. had two homers, a double and four RBIs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 8-4 Wednesday night and salvaged the final game of a three-game series.

“He's just a phenomenal baseball player,” teammate Vinnie Pasquantino said of Witt. “I don't know that there's a word I can say. He's not going to talk about personal accolades, but I will. He deserves to be in (the MVP) conversation.”

With the victory, the Royals moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the race for a wild-card spot in the American League. In the AL Central, Kansas City moved within a half-game of second-place Minnesota, which lost to the Chicago Cubs. The Royals are four games back of Cleveland, which was swept in a doubleheader by Arizona.

Witt had his fourth multi-homer game of the season, getting the Royals on the scoreboard in the first with his 21st homer. Witt's second homer of the game was a 421-foot blast to center field in the sixth inning. He also added a two-run double.

“The pressure brings me pleasure,” Witt said about his clutch hitting. “I go up there in those situations and try to control what I can control and find a good pitch to hit.”

That attribute is not lost on his manager.

“I think he's the best player in the league,” Matt Quatraro said. “Clearly, I'm going to be biased.”

But the admiration for Witt extended to the visiting clubhouse.

“That kid is special. He’s special,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “The way he conducts himself, the way he plays the game. From our dugout, I hate it, but I love it. He’s so polite. I think the game is in good hands.”

The Royals have homered in 13 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in club history.

Cole Ragans (9-7) allowed four runs, one earned, on six hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking two.

“I was confident that he had the stuff to keep them off balance,” Quatraro said. “His efficiency kept him going back out there. He'll get two extra days off before his next start, so we felt confident with where he was.”

Kutter Crawford (7-9) took the loss, working 3 2.3 innings and allowing six runs on five hits. He had three strikeouts and four walks.

After Witt's homer in the first, the Royals added a run in the second on a two-out single by Michael Massey, scoring MJ Melendez.

The Red Sox moved ahead in the third inning when Romy Gonzalez hit a two-out, three-run homer into the left-field bullpen. All three runs were unearned, as Ceddanne Rafaela reached base with no outs on an error on Massey. Danny Jansen lined a home run, his seventh of the season, into the same bullpen leading off the fourth.

The Royals regained the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kansas City scored its first run of the inning on a wild pitch before Witt's opposite-field double scored two. Pasquantino then hit his 17th homer of the season — a two-run shot — off reliever Brennan Bernardino, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

Red Sox: RHP Chris Martin was reinstated from the 15-day injured list, where he had been since July 5 (retroactive to July 4) with right elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, LHP Cam Booser was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. ... OF Tyler O'Neill was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Aug. 4) with a left leg infection. INF/OF Emmanuel Valdez was recalled from Worcester to take his place.

Red Sox: Open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Friday. No starting pitchers have been named.

⚾ Witt leads Royals to Wednesday win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Wichita Wind Surge shut out the Corpus Christi Hooks 3-0 at Whataburger Field. The Wind Surge also hit a pair of bombs for the second straight night to jump ahead 2-0 in the series.

Andrew Morris&nbsp;set the tone early by striking out the side in the bottom of the first. Morris would go on to tie his season-high with nine punchouts.

While Wichita’s first six hitters got sent down as the minimum through two innings,&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;led off the third by swatting a solo home run, his ninth of the season, off a 3-2 count to left field. Wind Surge hitters connected on three homers through the first 13 innings of the series against Corpus Christi pitching.

Outstanding work on the mound carried throughout the next four innings, as three batters reached base in total on both sides. Morris continued to deal on the mound while the Hooks went to their bullpen.

Luke Keaschall&nbsp;left the yard on a two-run blast, his eighth round-tripper with Wichita, that stayed fair down the line in left for a 3-0 Wind Surge lead in the top of the eighth.

Corpus Christi loaded the bases on free passes in the home half of the eighth before&nbsp;Kyle Bischoff&nbsp;retired Collin Price on an inning-ending foul tip strikeout. The hosts also got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth on a pair of singles, then&nbsp;Miguel Rodriguez&nbsp;froze Pascanel Ferreras with a slider to end the game in shutout fashion.

Morris impeccably received his sixth win of the season, giving up just two hits over seven innings with a walk and nine strikeouts to jump ahead to 6-3 in Double-A. Rodriguez also earned his fourth save after keeping the ninth scoreless with two hits and the game-ending whiff.

As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football's outstanding receiver, not merely college football's outstanding&nbsp;wide&nbsp;receiver. The Biletnikoff Award is a single season, not career, award. Receivers are frequently added to the watch list as their season performances dictate and actual performance, not potential, is the basis for inclusion on the watch list.

KU's leader in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons, Arnold finished the 2023 campaign with 44 receptions for 784 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 17.8 yards per reception, which was second on the team, and he had two 100-yard receiving games. Arnold closed out the season with a career-high 132 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions in the Jayhawks' 49-36 victory over UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

From DeSoto, Texas, Arnold has previously been named a Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team selection by Athlon and he earned a spot on the East-West Shrine Bowl Watch List. Olympics on TV for Thursday, Aug. 8

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - After some offseason troubles, there were questions among Chiefs fans if wide receiver Rashee Rice would be with the team at the start of training camp.

With the threat of a suspension, Rice being able to focus on football at camp is very important.

"Just because I get to be out here and still be a part of my team and we get to dominate and focus on our goal this year," Rice tells reporters.

Rice's potential suspension by the NFL is a dark cloud looming over Chiefs camp, but Rice would not comment on that.

"It's a legal process and my team is handling it off the field for me," Rice says.

Rice knows through it all though he has one man in his corner, his quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

"He's been very important, he's there for me whenever I need him, on or off the field, he's only a call away and he's always going to pick up my call, so I got him," Rice says.

The Chiefs have been spending this week of training camp beginning to fully gear up for their first preseason game this weekend.

Kansas City still has a few players injured, that may not play Saturday, and a slew of young guys working to prove they deserve to be on the 53-man roster.

Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says he's excited to see the chemistry between some of those young players in the first preseason game.

"Who will communicate in the heat of battle, you know sometimes it's controlled here but kind of getting into a real game atmosphere," Spagnuolo tells reporters following practice. "Biggest thing is I want to see guys that are unknown to me from their toughness and tackling, those are gonna be the two biggest things."

Several young players in the Chiefs secondary have been working hard during training camp at Missouri Western, hoping to make an impact on the team.

Spagnuolo is ready to see some of those young players step up in the first preseason game on Saturday.

"Jaden (Hicks), all of them, Kamal (Hadden), even guys, Ekow (Boye-Doe) didn't play a lot back there last year right, guys that haven't had a lot of time back there, I'd like to see those guys," Spagnuolo says.

Spagnulo says he's ready to see some of the toughness from players in an actual game, as he determines whose "tough tough" and whose "fake tough."

The Chiefs have one more practice at Missouri Western Wednesday before they depart for Jacksonville.
