WICHITA &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State picked up its third American Athletic Conference victory with a 60-57 win over the Owls in a back-and-forth contest Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena. &nbsp; "It was a great overall team effort," head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/terry-nooner/1225" rel="smarttag" rev="1225" data-airgap-id="58">Terry Nooner</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "We had a great week of practice, and it was a well-deserved win for us." &nbsp; Wichita State (9-18, 3-11 AAC) held the Owls (12-13, 5-8 AAC) to just 57 points, well below their season average off 66.5, marking the fourth time in five games that the Shockers have kept their opponents below 60 points. The Shockers shot 6-for-18 (33.3 percent) from three, their best three-point percentage since Jan. 11, and 22-for-59 (37.3 percent) from the field. &nbsp; "We did a great job of finishing, we did a better job of shooting, and our defense was excellent today, so I'm excited for the team," Nooner said. "With the amount of work and what we put them through every day, to be able to come out here and be resilient, not quit and not lose faith in what we're doing as a program is a testament to the character of the players we have." &nbsp; Senior guard&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taylor-jameson/9003" rel="smarttag" rev="9003" data-airgap-id="59">Taylor Jameson</a></dfn>&nbsp;led all scoring with 18 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, hitting four threes, and shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Anderson recorded her first career start for the Shockers with&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ornella-niankan/8999" rel="smarttag" rev="8999" data-airgap-id="65">Ornella Niankan</a></dfn>&nbsp;out due to illness. &nbsp; Dominique Ennis led Rice with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. &nbsp; The game saw eight lead changes and four ties with neither team leading by more than eight at any point. &nbsp; The Shockers scored the first four points of the game, but an 11-2 Rice run put the Owls in front. Another run late in the quarter gave the Owls a six-point advantage after one. &nbsp; Wichita State opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run with the help of back-to-back threes from Parr and Jameson. Jameson hit two more threes in the quarter before Rice scored the last four points of the half to make it a two-point game. &nbsp; Rice started the second half on a 7-0 run to go up five before Murray snapped the scoring drought with a three. Jameson hit another three and Murray regained the lead for the Shockers with a pullup jumper. The lead changed hands twice more in the third, making it a one-point game with the Shockers in front going into the final period. &nbsp; White made a layup to open the quarter, but Ennis hit a three for Rice to tie it up. The teams traded jumpers, and then neither team hit a shot for two and a half minutes. Ndour hit one of two free throws with 3:17 to play, putting the Shockers up three, but Rice's Alexis Aniah made a jumper to make it a one-point game under three minutes. &nbsp; Anderson hit a pair of crucial free throws to push it back to a three-point Shocker lead, but Malia Fisher drained a three for Rice to tie it back up at 50-50 with 2:07 left. &nbsp; Murray recorded back-to-back buckets as the Shockers forced two turnovers in the final minute. Wichita State hit six more big free throws down the stretch to hold off the Owls, shooting 9-for-12 from the line in the fourth quarter. &nbsp; Wichita State moves in front of Florida Atlantic, up to 12th&nbsp;in the AAC standings, as they get ready to take on Temple (15-10, 9-5 AAC) and Tulane (15-9, 8-5 AAC) on the road next Wednesday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 22.</div>

🏀 Shocker women down Rice

LAKE CHARLES, La. --&nbsp;Wichita State rallied to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but allowed six unanswered runs as McNeese clinched the series win with an 11-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Joe Miller Ballpark. The Shockers (0-2) faced a 5-3 deficit of their own heading to the top of the seventh before flipping the script with a three-run inning.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/9183" rel="smarttag" rev="9183" data-airgap-id="59">Camden Johnson</a></dfn>&nbsp;delivered the big hit in the inning, a game-tying two-run triple into the right field corner; one batter later,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaleb-duncan/9419" rel="smarttag" rev="9419" data-airgap-id="60">Kaleb Duncan</a></dfn>&nbsp;hit a sharp line drive that was caught by shortstop Easton Dowell, who then tried to double off Johnson but threw the ball away, allowing Johnson to score for a 6-5 Wichita State lead. <dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/caleb-anderson/9173" rel="smarttag" rev="9173" data-airgap-id="61">Caleb Anderson</a></dfn>&nbsp;got the first two outs of the bottom of the seventh, but the Cowboys (2-0) got a game-tying double from Davis Meche that knotted the score at 6-6.&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/gannon-snyder/9192" rel="smarttag" rev="9192" data-airgap-id="62">Gannon Snyder</a></dfn>&nbsp;preserved the tie on the ensuing at-bat, gunning down Meche at the plate on a base hit from Larry Edwards Jr. to end the inning. McNeese exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to seize control. Dowell led off the inning with a solo home run off Anderson (0-1) to take a 7-6 lead, then Conner Westenburg doubled the advantage with an RBI triple. After a walk, Simon Larranaga launched a three-run homer off the batter's eye in center field to produce the final margin. Caleb&nbsp;Strmiska (1-0) slammed the door with two scoreless innings in relief for the Cowboys to earn the win, stranding two Shockers in the top of the ninth. Wichita State struck first with three runs in the top of the second inning, plating the first run on a Dowell throwing error and two more via a Johnson two-run single. The lead did not last long, however, as McNeese took advantage of three free passes from Wichita State starter&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/grant-adler/9422" rel="smarttag" rev="9422" data-airgap-id="63">Grant Adler</a></dfn>&nbsp;in the home half of the frame to score three runs of their own and tie the game at 3-3. Single runs in the fourth and fifth off Adler gave the Cowboys a 5-3 edge heading to the late innings. Adler finished with a no-decision, surrendering five runs over 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. McNeese starter Cooper Golden allowed just one hit but three runs over 5.0 innings in a no-decision. The Shockers and Cowboys will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.</div>

Back into a first-place tie in the Jayhawk Conference, the No. 8-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team opens a key stretch of six games with the Cloud County Thunderbirds.

Five of Hutchinson's final six opponents are KJCCC upper division teams.
The Blue Dragons and No. 7 Dodge City are tied atop the Jayhawk with 16-2 league records. Just 1.5 games behind is third-place Coffeyville at 14-3 and Butler is fourth at 13-5. Cloud County, which is riding a three-game winning streak, is currently in seventh place in the KJCCC at 10-8. The Thunderbirds are in a battle to secure a Region 6 Tournament opening-round home game. They have a 2 1/2 game lead over their closest pursuers in Barton, Colby and Garden City.
The Blue Dragons have a short turnaround for Saturday's game coming off a Thursday 66-53 road victory at Garden City. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_hailey_q6t6">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;had a career-high 32 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Leading by only four points at halftime, Jackson scored 12 points in a decisive 21-10 third-quarter surge.
Despite its three-game winning streak, Cloud County is 5-5 in its last 10 games. The Thunderbirds earned a 64-50 victory over Independence last Saturday. Their Wednesday game with Coffeyville was postponed until Monday. Against the Pirates, the Thunderbirds were led by Talasia Thomas' 22 points. Defensively, Cloud County held Independence to 31.0 percent shooting.
The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with Cloud County this season, earning a 77-53 decision on December 14 in Concordia. Jackson had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/alexander_dylan_dasd">Dylan Alexander</a>&nbsp;added 18 points. Facing a quick turnaround from a tough Thursday loss, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is back at the Sports Arena for the first time since February 1st.
Just 46 hours after dropping a road game at Garden City, the Blue Dragons (15-9 overall, 11-7 KJCCC) meet the Cloud County Thunderbirds (11-13, 5-13) in a Jayhawk Conference contest at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Blitzed by 13 Garden City 3-point field goals, including seven in the second half, the Blue Dragons look to rebound from an 81-73 loss to the Broncbusters on Thursday - the game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved back a day because of wintry weather.
The Blue Dragons out-shot and out-rebounded Garden City, but the Busters' 13 3-pointers and a 19-4 scoring advantage in points off turnovers were too much to overtime. Bo Aldridge had a game-high 15 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/cannon_bobby_1l4l">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;had his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Hutchinson remains in fifth place in the Jayhawk Conference, just one game behind fourth-place Butler after Thursday's game.
Under first-year head coach Kyle Pugh, Cloud County finds itself in 12th place in the Jayhawk Conference, but has a three-game lead over Seward County for the 12th and final spot in the upcoming Region 6 Tournament.
The Thunderbirds have had 10 full days off since they last played, which was a 77-64 loss to Colby on February 5. Cloud County received a forfeit from Independence last Saturday and Wednesday's scheduled game with Coffeyville was postponed to Monday.
The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with Cloud County on December 14, rallying from 16 points down in the second to earn a 77-73 victory. Jacquez Thornton paced the Dragon comeback with 27 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/arnold_khalil_9vae">Khalil Arnold</a>&nbsp;had 18 for Hutchinson. Keyon Garrett-Miller had 20 points to lead the Thunderbirds.</div>

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma &ndash; Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;combined for six hits and drove in for runs to lead the No. 23-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team to wins in the first two games of a three-game series on Friday at Rose State College.
The Blue Dragons won the series opener on Friday, defeating Rose State 4-1 as three Hutchinson pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. The Dragons then had innings of eight runs and six runs in a Game 2 win of 14-4 in seven innings.
Hutchinson improves to 4-0 to start the season. The final game of the series will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday. That game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but was moved up because of potential weather issues.

Mazza and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;had two hits each to lead the Blue Dragons' eight-hit attack.

Reid</a>&nbsp;went 4 for 6 with two doubles, three runs and a pair of RBIs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/allen_griffin_bmj4">Nick Glantz</a>&nbsp;was 3 for 3 with three singles, two walks, three runs scored and an RBI.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Mustow</a>&nbsp;was 2 for 6 with a two-run double.
Both&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/black_trent_xfjv">Trent Black</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/gardner_jack_8irv">Jack Gardner</a>&nbsp;hit pinch-hit home runs in Hutchinson's six-run sixth inning. Black hit a three-run homer and two batters later, Gardner launched a two-run home run.
After stranding five runners on base in the first three innings,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/hochstein_finn_ygit">Finn Hochstein</a>'s RBI single in the third lit the fuse for the Dragons' eight-run explosion in the fourth inning. The Dragons made it 2-0 on a well-executed safety squeeze bunt by Maher scored Glantz. The Dragons then scored six runs with two out in the inning. Mustow and Reid both had two-run doubles, Mazza added an RBI double and Glantz had a run-producing single. The Dragons sent 12 batters to the plate and had seven hits.
The Blue Dragons also had a season-high nine stolen bases, which tied for the sixth most in single-game program history. The Dragons executed a pair of double steals in a four-run sixth inning.
Pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/perry_gabe_wq1l">Gabe Perry</a>&nbsp;(2-0) earned his second victory of the season with 4 1-3 innings of work. Perry allowed six hits and four runs with five strikeouts and no walks.
Perry allowed four runs in the fifth inning as Rose State cut the Dragon lead to 9-4.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/rosser_lachlan_s3z7">Lachlan Rosser</a>&nbsp;got the final two outs of the fifth and worked the final 2 2-3 innings to close out the game. Rosser had five strikeouts and allowed no runs, with two hits and a walk.</div>

TOPEKA &ndash; Day 1 of the Ichabod Invitational was a quiet one for the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team on Friday at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
Three shot putters led the Dragons on Day 1. National qualifier Deisheline Mayer Scott was the top Blue Dragon finisher on Friday with a fifth-place performance of 44 feet, 2.75 inches (13.48 meters). Janiel Montague finished seventh in the event with a distance of 43-5 1/2 (13.42 meters).&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/green_aiyanna_nkel">Aiyanna Green</a>&nbsp;was 17th with a distance of 38-9 3/4 (11.82 meters).

TOPEKA &ndash; Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/lester_da-shawn_ptrw">Da'Shawn Lester</a>&nbsp;led the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team on Friday during Day 1 of the Ichabod Invitational with an individual event victory.
Lester won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:12.19 to lead a handful of players on Friday. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/williams_elisha_7e2c">Elisha Williams</a>&nbsp;placed 11th in the event with a time of 1:14.08.

👟 Lester earns Ichabod Invite event title

DERBY, Kan. — &nbsp;Boy, nobody saw this coming! Not only did the Hutchinson High School basketball team get one big win over No. 1 Derby, they got two big wins over No. 1 Derby.

Hutchinson went into the Derby game heavy underdogs for both contests, but came out with two wins with the Salthawk girls winning the opening varsity contest 58-54 and the Salthawks boys rally after being down 4 at the half 32-28 to pull the upset win over the No. 1 team in the State and the No. 1 team in class 6A 67-63 in the late varsity boys game.

Maybe the Snow Moon earlier in the week had something to do with it? Nah....just some darn good coaching to instill a never give up attitude in both teams to, as Ted Lasso would say..."Believe" and Believe they did.

Led by Kaia Smith's 22 points, including four trey's and 15 points from Grace Posh, including two clutch free throw tosses late, Hutch took a four point lead at half and made it hold to knock of #1 Derby 58-54.

Is this a signature win? It has to be as Hutchinson had lost to the Panthers for 10 straight years. You have to go back to February 17th of 2015 before you can find a Salthawk victory over Derby. Coach Kalen Hilst was a freshman at the University of Kansas. His two assistant coaches were seniors on the 2015 team, but on this magical night of basketball, the stars aligned for a Salthawk win. 

Kohlbie Craft kept the Salthawks in the game with five of her seven points coming in the Salthawk second quarter. Lily Rodriquez hit a clutch three point shot in the third as the Salthawks kept breaking the Panther press.

Derby's star Junior Macayla Askew and Senior Karlie Demel found themselves in foul trouble and had to sit much of the game with Demel fouling out late in the 4th quarter. That was when Posh stepped up to knock down two free throws along with several Ava Krone steals and rebounds to help seal the win for the Salthawks.

As if the night couldn't be more electric, the Salthawk boys took the lead from the girls to get a monster game from Lamar Govain and Levi Kepler to knock off previously undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state Derby 67-63 in nail bitter on Friday night.

At one time in the fourth quarter, the Salthawks had four starters with four fouls each at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Hutchinson was clinging to a 51-44 lead going into the final quarter. Taishaun Govan fouled out with 5:46 to play, then playmaker point-guard Terrell King fouled out less then 30 seconds later, plus Kepler was playing with four fouls as was Lamar Govain, but then the reserve players willed the Salthawks to the win. Kepler and Danny Boone came up with huge offensive rebounds as Kepler knocked down big free throws down the stretch as Derby had cut the lead to one. Lamar Govain played his best game as a varsity player to lead the Salthawks with two clutch charity tosses plus eight fourth quarter points as part of his team leading 23 points. Every Salthawk contributed as it took a great team effort to get a big win for Hutchinson on this Friday night in Derby.

Next action for the Salthawks will be Monday night at the Salthawk Activity Center as the game previously scheduled for Tuesday, February 18th has been moved to the 17th due to a predicted winter storm set to hit the area on Tuesday of next week.

Screams and cheers broke out Friday when MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the team's victory parade through the City of Brotherly Love. Fans camped out along the parade route overnight. Some huddled under blankets and inside tents early Friday to secure prime spots near the Philadelphia Museum of Art where the Eagles took the stage. Running back Saquon and other players hopped off the open-air buses to walk along the parade route and exchange high-fives with fans.

NASCAR draws stars to Daytona 500 with Trump, Captain America expected at 'Great American Race'

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It's NASCAR's turn to throw its version of the Super Bowl with Sunday's Daytona 500. The "Great American Race" has Captain America coming and maybe even President Donald Trump. The field is stacked with stars, including four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, who at age 49 is making his NASCAR debut. The start of the race has been moved up an hour, to 1:30 p.m. Eastern, with the threat of rain later Sunday. Pitbull is scheduled to perform the pre-race concert after his appearance was canceled last year because of rain.

Davis Thompson leads by 1 over Scottie Scheffler with Rory McIlroy lurking at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Davis Thompson has the lead at the Genesis Invitational thanks to a birdie on the final hole for a 66. He's one shot ahead of Scottie Scheffler. The world's No. 1 player only hit five fairways and still managed a bogey-free 67 at Torrey Pines. Rory McIlroy is three shots out of the lead after a 67. Scheffler isn't used to spending so much time in the rough. But even after a round like that, he was a constant presence atop the leaderboard and was satisfied that his short game is coming back after a delayed start to the year.

Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Sue Bird, Micky Arison, 'Redeem Team' among Hall of Fame finalists

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard are one step closer to going into the Basketball Hall of Fame. If all goes well, they might get in twice. Anthony and Howard were among the finalists announced Friday by the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame for enshrinement as part of the class of 2025. They both made it as individuals — and for their roles on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team that won gold at the Beijing Games. The team also is now one step from induction. Other finalists include women's basketball greats Sue Bird, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore and Jennifer Azzi.

SUPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — All-Star left-hander Cole Ragans and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a $13.25 million, three-year contract. Ragans gets a $250,000 signing bonus and salaries of $1 million this year, $4.5 million in 2026 and $7.5 million in 2027. His 2027 salary would escalate to $8 million if he wins a Cy Young Award in either 2025 or 2026. Ragans, 27, remains eligible for salary arbitration after the 2027 season and can become a free agent after the 2028 World Series. Ragans was 11-9 with a 3.14 ERA in 32 starts last year with 223 strikeouts.

Strength in numbers: New Red Sox righty Walker Buehler sees club joining trend of Dodgers

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Walker Buehler won a World Series last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that's stocked with starting pitching. He left as a free agent for a $21.05 million, one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, a team also trying to loading up on starting arms. Before agreeing to terms with infielder Alex Bregman on Wednesday, most of Boston's offseason was spent bolstering its staff. The Red Sox acquired 25-year-old left-hander Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox and signed 28-year-old lefty Patrick Sandoval, who hopes to return from Tommy John surgery this summer.

Marcus Stroman reports to Yankees camp and insists he won't go to the bullpen

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Marcus Stroman has reported to New York Yankees spring training after missing the first two days of workouts and said he will refuse to pitch out of the bullpen. Stroman repeated "I'm a starter" seven times in a 13-second span and says: "I won't pitch in the bullpen." Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt are the Yankees' top five starters, and a bullpen role for Stroman appears possible if he isn't traded and the others don't get hurt. Stroman is due an $18 million salary in the second season of a $37 million, two-year contract.

Napheesa Collier takes home $200K and Unrivaled 1-on-1 crown, beating Aaliyah Edwards in final

MEDLEY, Fla. (AP) — Napheesa Collier of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx took home $200,000 after she beat Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards in the final of Unrivaled's 1-on-1 tournament. Unrivaled commissioner Micky Lawler says the winner's check was the largest one-day prize in women's basketball history. Collier is a co-founder of the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league and was a No. 1 seed in the 30-player tournament. She won the best-of-three series 2-1 over the eighth-seeded Edwards to become Unrivaled's first 1-on-1 champion. Collier's five Unrivaled teammates each received $10,000 from the tournament's $350,000 prize pool. Edwards got $50,000 for reaching the final.

LAKE CHARLES, La. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State mustered just one hit from the fourth inning on as the Shockers dropped the 2025 season opener to McNeese, 7-1 on Friday night at Joe Miller Ballpark. &nbsp; McNeese (1-0) got 5.0 innings of one-hit, one-run relief from Sergio Lopez and broke a 1-1 deadlock with six runs over the final four innings, highlighted by a three-run bottom of the seventh. &nbsp; The game was scoreless into the bottom of the third inning as Wichita State starter&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-hamilton/9179" rel="smarttag" rev="9179" data-airgap-id="58">Brady Hamilton</a></dfn>&nbsp;and McNeese southpaw Alexis Gravel traded zeroes. A solo home run from Conner Westenburg in the bottom of the third got the Cowboys on the board first, but the Shockers answered back with a run of their own in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-out walk and three consecutive hit by pitches, the last of which from&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/9185" rel="smarttag" rev="9185" data-airgap-id="59">Josh Livingston</a></dfn>&nbsp;forced home a run that knotted the score at 1-1. &nbsp; The Cowboys quickly retook the lead in the home half of the frame as Matt Stancliff sliced an RBI double to the gap in left-center field and two batters later Marcus Heusohn plated Stancliff with a run-scoring single of his own for a 3-1 advantage. &nbsp; The big blow came in the seventh when Mack Brousseau lined an opposite field, two-out, two-run double that swelled the lead to 5-1. Long Beach Calif. &ndash; In the first game of the Wilson Invitational at the LBSU Softball Complex in Long Beach, California, the Jayhawks faced Saint Mary's (Calif.), recording 10 hits and playing solid defense behind senior pitcher&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/katie-brooks/6906" rel="smarttag" rev="6906" data-airgap-id="83">Katie Brooks</a></dfn>, who earned her first pitching win of the season.&nbsp;
"We were frustrated last weekend after coming so close in multiple games but missing key hits," head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/jennifer-mcfalls/526" rel="smarttag" rev="526" data-airgap-id="84">Jennifer McFalls</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "The team worked hard this week to focus on timely hitting, and I was proud of the quality at-bats tonight. We're getting runners on but still leaving too many stranded. The good news is we're stringing together solid hits&mdash;we just need to capitalize on opportunities. The Jayhawks struck first in a bases-loaded, two-out situation as freshman outfielder&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/ava-wallace/15856" rel="smarttag" rev="15856" data-airgap-id="87">Ava Wallace</a></dfn>&nbsp;battled through a long at-bat, working a full count before drawing a walk to bring&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/presley-limbaugh/6855" rel="smarttag" rev="6855" data-airgap-id="88">Presley Limbaugh</a></dfn>&nbsp;across the plate. Although Saint Mary's responded with a run, Kansas quickly answered with three of their own. Kansas' defense remained solid, holding SMC scoreless with three shutout innings, including back-to-back three-up, three-down frames, keeping them off the bases heading into the sixth.The Jayhawks found one more run from a Linduff RBI bringing across Limbaugh.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Saint Mary's (Calif.) cut into Kansas' lead in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 5-3 game entering the seventh. However, the Jayhawks stayed composed, locking in defensively during SMC's final at-bat. A groundout to first secured the final out, sealing a 5-3 victory and Kansas' second win of the season.&nbsp;

Ragans gets a $250,000 signing bonus and salaries of $1 million this year, $4.5 million in 2026 and $7.5 million in 2027. His 2027 salary would escalate to $8 million if he wins a Cy Young Award in either 2025 or 2026.

Ragans, 27, remains eligible for salary arbitration after the 2027 season and can become a free agent after the 2028 World Series.

“He earned this contract through his hard work, perseverance and professionalism,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said in a statement. “He’s been an outstanding performer for us at a young age and his success is motivating to us moving forward.”

Ragans was 11-9 with a 3.14 ERA in 32 starts last year with 223 strikeouts and 67 walks in 186 1/3 innings. He led AL qualified pitchers with an average of 10.77 strikeouts per nine innings and finished fourth in Cy Young voting.

He is 18-17 with a 3.46 ERA is 53 starts and 17 relief appearances over four seasons, including 16-11 with a 3.00 ERA in 44 starts since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aroldis-chapman-rangers-royals-trade-92d567adbd54f6fc838a6c0a57a13366">Kansas City acquired him from Texas</a>&nbsp;on June 30, 2023, for reliever Aroldis Chapman, who helped the Rangers win their first World Series title that fall.

Moore Complex. &nbsp; The Shockers have now dropped their first three games of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational. &nbsp; In the top of the first, the Shockers worked the bases loaded via a single, an SDSU error and a hit by pitch but were unable to bring anybody home in the opening frame. &nbsp; After no score through the first two innings,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/9318" rel="smarttag" rev="9318" data-airgap-id="60">Taylor Sedlacek</a></dfn>&nbsp;broke through with a no-doubt, solo home run to left-center to open the scoring and give WSU a 1-0 lead. &nbsp; Wichita State starter&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/chloe-barber/9310" rel="smarttag" rev="9310" data-airgap-id="61">Chloe Barber</a></dfn>&nbsp;kept the Aztec batters in check through the first four innings, only allowing one runner to move into scoring position in that time.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Aztecs finally broke through against the Lino Lakes, Minn., native in the bottom of the fifth, dragging a run across with a two-out infield single to tie the game at 1-1. &nbsp; An inning later, SDSU took its first lead of the game by ripping an RBI double down the right field line to take a 2-1 lead. Banks (1-0), a Division III transfer, held the Cats to two hits in his six innings to pick up his first victory with Washington. "The game started poorly for us," seventh-year head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461" rel="smarttag" rev="2461">Pete Hughes</a></dfn>&nbsp;stated. "We immediately set a bad tone for that game. We won't beat anyone if we give away 13 free bases. The positive is that our guys are good players, and I don't think we can play any worse." The Hutchinson High School basketball games against Campus scheduled to be played on Tuesday, Feb. 18, have now been moved up to Monday, Feb. 17.

This change comes due to the anticipated winter weather on Tuesday.

Freshmen games will be held at 4:15 p.m., followed by the boys JV at 5:45 p.m., girls varsity at 6 p.m., and then the boys varsity and girls JV both at 7:30 p.m.

Both varsity games can be heard on <a href="https://radio.securenetsystems.net/v5/KWBW">KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5)</a>, the flagship station of Salthawk Athletics.

While Rodgers hasn't said whether he intends to continue playing for a 21st NFL season, the Jets with new general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn in charge have officially ruled out a return to New York. In a statement issued by the team, the Jets said they met with the 41-year-old quarterback last week and informed him of their plans. Castroneves to use "world-class driver" provisional to race in Daytona 500 after qualifying crash

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will race in the Daytona 500 as a special 41st driver under a new rule that allows for a "world-class driver" to receive a provisional spot. The Brazilian did not want to use the provisional and hoped to race his way into the field in the first of two 150-mile qualifying races. But he was involved in an early eight-car accident. With 41 drivers, it will be the largest Daytona 500 field since 43 cars was the standard in 2015. Bubba Wallace won the first qualifying race and Justin Allgaier raced his way into the Daytona 500 to help JR Motorsports make its Cup debut Sunday. Austin Cindric won the second qualifying race and Corey LaJoie earned the final spot in the field.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Denny McCarthy is leading the Genesis Invitational thanks to two holes to close out an otherwise tough and miserable day of weather. McCarthy finished birdie-eagle for a 68. That gives him a one-shot lead over Seamus Power and Patrick Rodgers. Scottie Scheffler was another shot back after missing a short birdie attempt on his final hole. Torrey Pines was brutal as ever because of a cold rain and enough wind. Two of the par 5s played over par. The fifth hole didn't yield a single birdie. Torrey Pines is filling in for Riviera this year because of the LA wildfires.

Steph vs. Sabrina, the big hit of All-Star weekend last year, won't happen this year

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — There will be no Stephen Curry vs. Sabrina Ionescu rematch at All-Star weekend. The NBA announced Thursday that the 3-point shooting event bringing together two of the biggest stars in the NBA and WNBA is not going to be part of the lineup in San Francisco. It was the hit of All-Star weekend last year. Talks went on for weeks to try to make the rematch happen, even stretching into All-Star week itself. It seemed more than logical that a rematch would occur; All-Star weekend is on Curry's home floor this weekend and Ionescu is a Bay Area native who grew up watching Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

Marcus Stroman a no-show for New York Yankees' first two workouts

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Marcus Stroman has been a no-show on the field for the New York Yankees' first two spring training workouts. Stroman isn't required to participate in spring training until Feb. 22, the mandatory reporting date under the collective bargaining agreement. But most players arrive on the voluntary reporting date. Yankees manager Aaron Boon says he had talked to Stroman and knew he might be out the first couple of days. Boone wouldn't disclose Stroman's reasoning for being absent after the team's second day of practice Thursday.

Norway's Ingebrigtsen sets world record in the indoor mile days after Nuguse's mark

LIEVIN, France (AP) — Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen has set a world record in the indoor mile, beating Yared Nuguse's mark set just five days earlier at the Millrose Games. The two-time Olympic champion also set the world indoor 1,500 meter record at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF in northern France. Ingebrigtsen crossed the finish line in a time of 3 minutes, 45.14 seconds, improving on Nuguse's 3:46.63 in New York. Along the way, he hit 1,500 meters in 3:29.63, taking almost a second off the mark he set on the same track in 2022.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — At 100 years old, the Goodyear Blimp is an ageless star in the sky. The 246-foot-long airship will be in the background of the Daytona 500 — flying roughly 1,500 feet above Daytona International Speedway, actually — to celebrate its greatest anniversary tour. Even though remote camera technologies are improving regularly and changing the landscape of aerial footage, the blimp continues to carve out a niche. Eagle Radio Hutchinson Sportscaster Glen Grunwald has been selected by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters to receive the KSHSAA Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award for 2025. This marks the second time that Grunwald has been given this award, winning it for the first time in 2020.

Grunwald is the voice of the Hutchinson High Salthawks and formerly was the lead sportscaster for&nbsp; the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon football and men's basketball team broadcasts until stepping away last March after 26 years which included being on the call for the Blue Dragons NJCAA Men's D1 Basketball Championship in 2017 and their first NJCAA Football Championship in 2021.

Grunwald joins a fraternity of the state's finest broadcasters, including former winners, longtime KU voice Bob Davis (1975, current KU voice Brian Hanni (2010 and 2012) and K-State voice Wyatt Thompson (1989).

"To win it once was a thrill, to win it a second time with so many great broadcasters in Kansas....I am just so blessed to be even mentioned in the same breath as Bob, Wyatt an Brian is such a blessing this late in my career. I mean these guys are legends in Kansas Sportscasting history." Grunwald said on winning the award.

Eagle Radio as a company currently employs six winners. Junction City's Dewey Terrill won in 1991, 1995 and 1998. Gerard Wellbrock from Hays won in 1996, 1997 and 2000. Dustin Armbruster from Hays won in 2013 and 2022, Cole Reif from Great Bend won in 2018 and Devin Hanney from Salina won in 2019 prior to Grunwald's 2020 win and again in 2021.

Grunwald was
honored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) in 2017 as the recipient of
the Hod Humiston Award for Broadcast excellence. He was also named the Kansas
Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA) Sportscaster of the
Year in 2022 and received an honorable mention award along with his broadcast partner Dan Naccarato in 2023 by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters for medium market play-by-play.

Grunwald has
also been honored to be chosen as one of three finalist for the National Sports
Media Association organization as Sportscaster of the Year in Kansas for 2023 and again was in the top five finalist this past December for 2024.

Grunwald will receive his award at one of the KSHSAA state basketball championship events in March.

🎙️ Eagle Media Hutchinson Sportscaster Grunwald wins 2025 Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Bo Aldridge scored a team-high 15 points in an 81-73 Hutchinson Community College loss at Garden City on Thursday inside of Conestoga Arena.

The Blue Dragons fall to 15-9 overall, 11-7 in Jayhawk Conference play.

Hutch now drops to fifth place in the tightly contested conference standings with six games remaining.

Garden City (14-11, 9-10) got off to a hot shooting performance to start each half. Hutchinson had an answer to the Broncbuster run to start the game, but not in the second half, as Garden City created some separation and never let Hutch back in.

The Blue Dragons struggled to shoot the ball from deep, going 4 of 18, while the Broncbusters knocked down 13 of 33 from long distance.

HutchCC was plus-seven on the glass and scored 33 bench points, while Garden City did not have a single point off of the bench.

Bobby Cannon posted his third double-double of the season, going for 13 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Jackson scored 13 and D.J. Dudley with 12 for the Blue Dragons in double-figure scoring.

Hutch will host Cloud County on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside of the Sports Arena, while Garden City will have its final bye of the regular season.

Hutchinson had an answer to the Broncbuster run to start the game, but not in the second half, as Garden City created some separation and never let Hutch back in.The Blue Dragons struggled to shoot the ball from deep, going 4 of 18, while the Broncbusters knocked down 13 of 33 from long distance.HutchCC was plus-seven on the glass and scored 33 bench points, while Garden City did not have a single point off of the bench.Bobby Cannon posted his third double-double of the season, going for 13 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Jackson scored 13 and D.J. Dudley with 12 for the Blue Dragons in double-figure scoring.Hutch will host Cloud County on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside of the Sports Arena, while Garden City will have its final bye of the regular season.
