Robert A. “Bob” Ashworth, 85, of Arlington, passed March 31, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born April 7, 1939, on the family farm north of Macksville, to Myrl K. and Velda I. (Abrams) Ashworth.

Bob graduated from Macksville High School in 1957 and earned his Bachelors and Masters in Industrial Arts Education from Fort Hays State University. He taught Industrial Arts at Nickerson High School for 29 years before he retired.

Bob answered the call to serve his community as both a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He served on the Reno County District 4 Fire Department for 40 years. Bob helped establish the Arlington EMS, becoming one of the first board certified EMTs in the state of Kansas. Additionally, he served on the Nickerson Fire Department and Reno County EMS Reserves.

On August 29, 1965, Bob married Dedria A. Dipman, in Larned. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, Dari and Darin.

Bob was a man of many talents, driving a concrete truck in college and after retiring from teaching. He also worked summers at the Arlington Co-op and assembled farm implements to earn income for his family’s treasured summer vacations in their motorhome.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking. He built his own home and shop, and spent many hours assisting his children and grandchildren with their projects.

Bob loved spending time with his family. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and would tell you that they were his greatest joy. And, they loved having Grandpa Bob in attendance at their many athletic events and activities. This extraordinary man will be greatly missed by his family, his community and all who knew him.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Dedria; his children, Dari Hilbert (Tom) of Seneca, Darin Ashworth (Emily) of Haven; grandchildren: Maurice Hilbert, Abraham Hilbert, Noah Hilbert, Lorelei Ashworth, Luke Ashworth, Nolan Ashworth; siblings: Janice Murphy, Nancy Douglas, Ronald Ashworth (Retha), all of Larned; and many extended family members.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Ashworth; and sister, Jeanne Hawk.

He was a member of Larned United Methodist Church and attended Arlington United Methodist Church.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed in his obituary on the funeral home website. Graveside service will follow at Larned Cemetery.

Patty P. Clark, 81, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family and the loving staff of Good Samaritan Society on March 27,2025.

Patty was born on March 17, 1944, to Carroll and Ruth Browning in Hutchinson, KS. She married James “Jim” Clark Sr. on November 12, 1964, in Nelson, NE. She was a long-time resident of Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School and later on graduated from Sterling College to become a certified teacher. After graduating from Sterling, she taught for Hutchinson Public Schools until her retirement and later after moving to Rockaway Beach, MO. She continued teaching for the Forsyth School District in Mo. She was very passionate about teaching children.

Branson, MO was a special place for Jim and Patty. They found their little slice of Heaven on earth in Rockaway Beach, MO. They had a small place there and they would spend most of their weekends enjoying nature and of course a lot of shows, their favorite was the Foggy River Boys. They were happy to share this with just about everyone but especially with their Grandchildren, Michael, Ashley and Tiffany. They would take them to Branson and go see the Foggy River Boys shows, to the game room, sometimes even swimming in the creek. Later they moved a trailer from Hutchinson that Jim &amp; Patty had worked hard to get ready to take to the new and updated Trogland (Home). This would become their retirement home in 2001. They lived there for many great years until Jim passed away on September 11, 2012. Patty then moved back to Hutchinson to live with her son and his family until her health declined and she moved to Good Samaritan Society.

She is survived by her son, James Clark Jr. and wife Tammy; grandson, Michael Clark and wife Samantha and their children, Trevyr, Zandryah and Yasaliynah; granddaughter, Ashley Carson and husband Zach and their children, Danielle and Logan; granddaughter Tiffany Ramsey and husband Mike and their children, Derrick Spence, Teagyn Ramsey and Baby Ramsey who will be here in September; sister, Joyce Trent and husband Arvin and niece Gayle Miller and her son Jason Miller; first cousin, Skip Mills and his wife Jeanette and their children, Chris Mills and Jenny Mills Schissler.

Patty was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Clark Sr., mother, Ruth Simpson, father, Carroll Browning, stepfather, Harold Simpson; brother, Marvin Browning; niece, Pam Smith; nephews, Larry Trent and Doug Miller; great-niece, Nikki Miller and sister-in-law, Joann Hill.

Barbara Jean (Hughes) Clendening, 80, formerly of Hutchinson, died March 29, 2025, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler.  She was born October 4, 1944, in Hutchinson, to Emmett W. and Sarah (Gibson) Hughes.

Barbara graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962, and received her associates degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College.  She worked at the Dillons Corporate Office, Hutchinson Floral, and sold Mary Kay.  Barbara retired from Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as an administrative assistant, after 15 years of service. She enjoyed singing, being active in her church, playing golf and working on crafts, especially tole painting. Barbara attended First Church of God and then Union Valley Bible Church, both of Hutchinson.

Barbara is survived by:  her son, Dar Holden (Kay); brother, Jack E. Hughes, all of Hutchinson; brother-in-law, Ted Crank of Tennessee; and two nephews and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents; brother, Michael Hughes and his wife, Lisa; and a sister, Jill Crank.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Tim Kraft officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Dennis Ray Friesen, 69, died March 24, 2025, at his residence. He was born February 12, 1956, in Hutchinson to Milton W. and Carmen Talbott Friesen.

Dennis graduated from Hutchinson High School. He worked the Dillons perishable warehouse for twenty years. Dennis also worked at Underground Vaults and Storage. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and rock music.

Dennis had a unique sense of humor that could light up a room. He enjoyed making people laugh. Dennis always had a smile on his face. He had an enormous heart and never met a stranger. He was close with God regularly reading on not only how to better his relationships, but also himself. He was a work in progress, but never forgot those closest to him. He was proud of his family and especially his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. The memories we all shared will be cherished forever.

Jaqueline L. “Jackie” Symonds, 86, of Hutchinson, died March 29, 2025, at Mennonite Friendship Communities. She was born on September 28, 1938, in Hutchinson, to Harold and Eva (Baldauf) Swanson.&nbsp;

On August 16, 1958, she married Jimmie D. Symonds in Enid, OK. They shared nearly 63 beautiful years together before his death on May 14, 2021. Jimmie and Jackie loved dancing with each other and are dancing together once again.&nbsp;

Jackie was a member of Loyal Order of Moose #982 and was an avid Bingo player with them for 25 years. She enjoyed going to casinos and playing slots. Jackie was onery and loved to make people smile. She adored her family and friends and relished spending time with them.

Jackie is survived by: daughter, Dorthea (Eddie) Wooten; grandchildren; Kyleigh Wedel, Sean (Ashley) Wedel, Jordan (Ashley) Wedel, Shannon Symonds, Jimmie Symonds, Tyler Symonds, Steve (Jenny) Stock, Nathan (Melody); 19 great-grandchildren; and brother, Gerald Swanson.

Lily Irene Brooks, 92, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.

Lily was born on October 10, 1932, in Kearney, NE, the daughter of Albert and Mae L. (Howell) Brisbin. On February 20, 1950, she married Harry Brooks in Minden, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harry Brisbin; sisters, Violet Sheen and Velda Harrison; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Always.

Lily is survived by her husband, Harry Brooks; daughters, Judy (Robert) Tucker and Sharen (John) Blanton; sons, Kevin (Dana) Brooks, Matthew Brooks and Larry Brooks; grandchildren, Angela Tucker, April (David) Riney, Laura (Jason) Reed, Joshua (Jane) Brooks; great grandchildren, Balin Roen, Katlin Riney, Austin Reed, Tadan Reed; 3 step-great grandchildren and several step- great great grandchildren.

Thomas J. Goin (55) was born on March 17, 1970, in Kansas City, MO. He unexpectedly died on March 23, 2025, while in Wichita, KS

Thom is survived by his wife Lisa Perkins, his daughters Freya Goin and Victoria Goin (Ryan Hockenberry), his stepsons Christopher Clark (Jessica), Tyler Basso (Jennifer) . His Grandchildren Omari, Lillyann, Dahlia, Everett, Alivia, Brady, Mia, Easton, Gracie and Vivian. His adoptive mother Donna Kessler (Tom), his siblings Christy Jo Plemmons, Frank Camren (Jennifer), Christopher Goin, Rhonda Gunn and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive father Phillip “Kelley” Goin, biological parents Victoria Sweany and Tommy Rees.

Thom was a devoted husband, dad, papa and friend. He was a hard worker, great provider and would do anything for anyone, especially those he loved. Music was Thom’s favorite pastime; knew most every word of every song and he loved playing his guitar.  He loved riding on his motorcycle or was just as content sitting at home spending time with his family. Playing video games on his tablet with his little buddy Derrick was very special to him too.

Thom has touched many lives in his lifetime and his memory will live on in all of us forever.&nbsp;

Verla “Kay” Kincaid, 83, of Mount Hope, passed away on March 25, 2025, at Reflection Living in Hutchinson. She was born on June 24, 1941, in Hutchinson, to Verl and Chlo Ann (Eisminger) Stiggins.

Kay graduated from Partridge High School, Class of 1959 and then attended Vernon’s School of Cosmetology. &nbsp;She was a proud and dedicated cosmetologist for over 60 years. She was a member of the Haven Women’s Golf Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Kaimi Kincaid (Ric Torla) of Wichita; son, Kory Kincaid (Charity) of Burrton; siblings, Nancy Fingerle (Bruce), Linda Sue Cox (Steven), Brad Stiggins, and Becky Stubby (Steve Wyckoff); seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Doug Stiggins; and nephew, Aaron Cox.

Gusty was an English Teacher at Hutchinson High School and was currently in her 20th year of teaching. Katherine “Kathy” Sullivan Ewing, 94, peacefully passed away March 24, 2025, in her Burrton home. She was born July 10, 1930, in Hutchinson, to Everett Michael Carr and Dorothy S. Fettis.

Kathy graduated from Hutchinson High School. She also attended Adela Hale Business School. Before retirement, Kathy was a bookkeeper for Westlake Ace Hardware South store for many years. She had also worked for Hutchinson Floral and Gibsons. &nbsp;

She loved flowers and plants of all kinds, so she found joy being in her garden and was always eager to accumulate “one more” for her collection. For many years, she raised and showed rabbits, she also raised chickens and was known as the “egg lady.” In addition, Kathy enjoyed hanging freshly washed laundry up to dry, reading her Bible, and a good game of Dominos. However, there was nothing better for her than time spent with her grandchildren who she dearly loved. She is remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

A member of Faith Community Bible Church, Burrton and Young At Hearts, her faith was the cornerstone of her life.

In 1948, Kathy married Travis Powell Sullivan, they later divorced. She then married Earl A. Ewing in 1992

Kathy is survived by: her children, Cindy Lucille (Mike) Marinchak, Michael (Beverly) Sullivan, and Lorelei C. Sullivan; sister, Fern Moots; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Travis and husband Earl; son, James Sullivan; daughter, Tracie Roseann Ginest; sisters, Shirley Gibson, Georgia May, and Davida Hedger; and uncle, Everett Fettis.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Steve Hodgson officiating. Burial will follow in Burrton Cemetery, Burrton. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Katherine 'Kathy' Lucille Ewing | 1930 - 2025 |

Kenneth Dale Froese was born May 31, 1941, at Hutchinson, Kansas, the first of three children born to Pete and Hilda Martens Froese. He had a strong relationship with his Dad, and spent a lot of time at his Dad’s side in his farm shop, learning not only how to weld and fix things, but also Dad’s philosophy. Ken and his Dad conversed in low German . . .even thought in German! It’s not surprising then, that when Ken started school at Sparta school east of Inman he could speak only low German. What Ken’s Dad taught him was far more valuable than any material thing Ken could have received. Dad taught him tolerance, patience . . . and when faced with a problem, to take a step back to get a broader perspective on the situation. He gave Ken the opportunity to earn what he wanted, rather than to give it to him outright. Ken could raise a bucket calf, and pay for the calf and the feed when the calf was sold. Already a budding entrepreneur, he built his own motorized bicycle when he was barely a teenager. To get the horse he wanted, Ken boarded and broke horses for the neighbors.

When he was a freshman and sophomore in high school, Ken was a shepherd, raising several dozen sheep. Using this money, and getting a loan from the bank to buy his first combine, Ken headed up a wheat harvesting crew together with Bob Ediger, the summer after his sophomore year in high school, hiring some of his friends and classmates to drive the trucks. After he graduated from Inman High School in 1959, Ken built his own forage harvester, just as his Dad had done almost 20 years earlier, and went into the ensilage cutting business. Taking the lead from his Dad, they were soon joined by Ken’s brother Don, and brother-in-law Jim Krehbiel. Under Ken’s leadership, this business grew to 6 silage cutters, 18 trucks, and a crew of 26.

In 1962, Ken married Judy Penner at Zoar Mennonite Brethren Church in Inman. He supported her dream of going to college, both financially and by pitching in with domestic duties and willingly sharing the care of baby Sherri.

In 1967, Ken stepped in to help his uncle Eddie Froese operate the Rhodes frozen bread plant in Inman, after the death of Eddie’s son/Ken’s cousin. The dough plant was soon running three shifts day and night, providing employment for up to 34 area residents, for many years. Ken lived only a block or so away from the dough plant, and often he would be called to the plant at night to take care of a problem.

In 1976, Ken and his partners, Milferd and V Lee Penner, started Inman Irrigation, Inc., bringing the first pivot irrigation to Central Kansas. Gerry Friesen traded his carpenter’s hammer for a wrench and winch, erecting Valley circle sprinklers for Ken’s company. Ken became the sole owner of Inman Irrigation in 1980. When Milferd left to pursue his dream of being a writer and photographer. V Lee stayed on as office manager; her congenial personality served to oil the gears of the business, smoothing the rough places and endearing her to co-workers and customers alike.

Ken built a team to run the irrigation business; every one who worked there knew exactly what needed to be done, knew that the customers depended on him or her to do their job. Ken rarely told anyone what to do; he just discussed the situation with them, and then it was easy for them to see what needed to be done. As each person earned Ken’s trust, he delegated more decision-making to them. Ken depended heavily on Jim Lowe, who was an expert on Valley pivots and readily shared his knowledge; his easy-going personality always kept things on an even keel. The employees at Inman Irrigation could handle the day-to-day business very well, and they often encouraged Ken to take some time off, especially in the summer when they knew he loved to be at the lake. But they depended on Ken for giving the company direction, for that over-all view that he had . . . the big picture.

Nothing could surpass the loyalty that Ken felt for his employees. He believed that achieving the company’s goals was a way for each of them (himself included) to achieve their personal goals. Ken was genuinely interested in the lives of his employees, as they can give testimony. Many can quote his one-line mottos and sayings, such as the seven Ps: “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”. . . or “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. He had the big picture in his mind, always able to see beyond the details and looking far ahead of most people. Sometimes after months and years of planning and work, some deal or project would fall into place, and Ken would say to Judy, “We got lucky again!” or more often in low German, “Et haht allvade yegleckt!” They would chuckle, knowing that it wasn’t luck at all!

Very few people realize that Ken was also an inventor. Combining his unique vision with what

he learned in his Dad’s farm shop, he enjoyed designing a tool or piece of equipment to fill a specific need. He would build a prototype, and make improvements until it worked just the way he intended. Sometimes the end result was just something he used in his business, but sometimes he found a way to put it into production . . . like the sickle guards he built and sold for swathers back in the 1960s. Several items he invented were sold in the turf division of Inman Irrigation: an aerator, a grass seeder, and the Dickens Panbuster which Ken designed together with Loren Dick.

Ken and Judy have always enjoyed water recreation; they even owned a little wooden motor boat the first year of their marriage, launching it in the muddy water of Lake Inman and the clear blue water of Table Rock Lake in the Ozarks. A few years later, they bought a cabin at Lake Kanopolis – one of the first cinder block cabins built after the completion of the dam in 1954? Friends were always welcome at the cabin, and many times there were wall-to-wall beds and sleeping bags. All the neighbors and everybody’s relatives were invited to the annual hog roasts . . . and the October wiener roasts down by the lake!

On Labor Day 1979, Ken and Judy and their friends had the last big party in that cabin. The next weekend their friends came back to move everything out of the cabin . . . and it was dozed down. By spring 1980, a new cabin stood in its place. This cabin at Lake Kanopolis and his many friends at Yankee Run were a source of great pleasure for Ken. Ken said he felt closer to God there than anywhere else on earth. When flood waters threatened the cabin in 1993, Ken’s friends, employees, and neighbors filled umpteen sandbags and barricaded the walk-out basement from the flood. Memories like that are worth more than money. Ken considered his greatest wealth to be his many friends.

Ken survived a heart attack at age 44, and triple by-pass heart surgery seven years later. Ordered by his cardiologist to take some time off from work, Ken was able rest his body, but not his mind. While recuperating, he designed a two-slip boat dock to be built from scrapped irrigation pipe. When the Corp of Engineers required stamped architectural blueprints in order to approve the dock, one of Ken’s customers who is an architect put Ken’s plan on paper and stamped it. Loren Dick did the welding to make that dock a reality. One of Ken’s proudest moments was when that dock was slipped into the waters of Lake Kanopolis just three months after his heart surgery in 1993.

Ken always had time to listen, to give counsel when asked, or share his views. He never sought recognition or reward for what he did for others. . . he would rather work quietly behind the scenes. His reward was the satisfaction of seeing a smile on the faces of those he helped to achieve their goal. There were many who sought his counsel: from the employee who asked him to hold his personal checkbook so that he would not overdraw his account. . . or the sick employee who called Ken to take him to the doctor in Wichita in the middle of the night . . .or the sub-contractor who got a break because of the business that Ken sent his way. . . or the many customers who looked to Ken as a consultant for their farming business. . . or the bankers who benefited from his perspective. Ken was one of the early investors in the Inman Industrial

organization, and a member of the Inman Chamber of Commerce. Ken was the recipient of many awards from Valmont for excellence in the management of his business; he was a former member of the Valley Dealer Council.

Ken believed in encouraging someone who was doing something right, however small that effort might be. His pat on the back usually brought renewed vigor to the effort, resulting in a greater achievement. Ken did not have much use for (quote) important positions, or titles. His goal was simply to be a friend, someone who cared about other people. His highest compliment for someone was “He is a Good Person”.

If there was one title that Ken did enjoy, it was “Grandpa”. His two grandchildren, Christopher and Lindsey (Drake), were his pride and joy. If there was anything that could tear him away from work, it was those two. Ken often planned what he would teach Chris or Lindsey at their next meeting. He enjoyed them as much as any grandpa could, and wanted more than anything to impart his philosophy and attitude about life to them. He once said, “When you do something, you do it because of who you are, not because somebody makes you do it, or because of who the other person is.”

Well, Ken. . . we know who we are. . . we are better for having known you. You were that “Good Person”!

Ken is survived by his wife, Judy Froese, McPherson, KS; brother, Don (Dianne) Froese, Inman KS, brother-in-law Jim Krehbiel, Newton KS, daughter Sherri Evans, Camp Verde AZ; grandchildren Chris (Samantha) Evans, Ozark MO, Drake (James) Loughead, Albuquerque NM, and Mae Manuel, Springfield MO; great grandchildren Kara and Aria Evans, Ozark MO. Ken was preceded in death by his sister Rosanne Krehbiel, and his parents.

Services are on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 with a private memorial service and burial, followed by lunch at noon and a Community Celebration of Life at the Inman Community Center.

Ken won’t be able to enjoy flowers at the funeral, there will plenty of flowers where he is going. So in lieu of sending flowers to the funeral home, it would please us if you would send flowers to someone that you love so they can enjoy them here and now, in Ken’s memory. Using this money, and getting a loan from the bank to buy his first combine, Ken headed up a wheat harvesting crew together with Bob Ediger, the summer after his sophomore year in high school, hiring some of his friends and classmates to drive the trucks. After he graduated from Inman High School in 1959, Ken built his own forage harvester, just as his Dad had done almost 20 years earlier, and went into the ensilage cutting business. Taking the lead from his Dad, they were soon joined by Ken’s brother Don, and brother-in-law Jim Krehbiel. Under Ken’s leadership, this business grew to 6 silage cutters, 18 trucks, and a crew of 26.In 1962, Ken married Judy Penner at Zoar Mennonite Brethren Church in Inman. He supported her dream of going to college, both financially and by pitching in with domestic duties and willingly sharing the care of baby Sherri.In 1967, Ken stepped in to help his uncle Eddie Froese operate the Rhodes frozen bread plant in Inman, after the death of Eddie’s son/Ken’s cousin. The dough plant was soon running three shifts day and night, providing employment for up to 34 area residents, for many years. Ken lived only a block or so away from the dough plant, and often he would be called to the plant at night to take care of a problem.In 1976, Ken and his partners, Milferd and V Lee Penner, started Inman Irrigation, Inc., bringing the first pivot irrigation to Central Kansas. Gerry Friesen traded his carpenter’s hammer for a wrench and winch, erecting Valley circle sprinklers for Ken’s company. Ken became the sole owner of Inman Irrigation in 1980. When Milferd left to pursue his dream of being a writer and photographer. V Lee stayed on as office manager; her congenial personality served to oil the gears of the business, smoothing the rough places and endearing her to co-workers and customers alike.Ken built a team to run the irrigation business; every one who worked there knew exactly what needed to be done, knew that the customers depended on him or her to do their job. Ken rarely told anyone what to do; he just discussed the situation with them, and then it was easy for them to see what needed to be done. As each person earned Ken’s trust, he delegated more decision-making to them. Ken depended heavily on Jim Lowe, who was an expert on Valley pivots and readily shared his knowledge; his easy-going personality always kept things on an even keel. The employees at Inman Irrigation could handle the day-to-day business very well, and they often encouraged Ken to take some time off, especially in the summer when they knew he loved to be at the lake. But they depended on Ken for giving the company direction, for that over-all view that he had . . . the big picture.Nothing could surpass the loyalty that Ken felt for his employees. He believed that achieving the company’s goals was a way for each of them (himself included) to achieve their personal goals. Ken was genuinely interested in the lives of his employees, as they can give testimony. Many can quote his one-line mottos and sayings, such as the seven Ps: “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”. . . or “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. He had the big picture in his mind, always able to see beyond the details and looking far ahead of most people. Sometimes after months and years of planning and work, some deal or project would fall into place, and Ken would say to Judy, “We got lucky again!” or more often in low German, “Et haht allvade yegleckt!” They would chuckle, knowing that it wasn’t luck at all!Very few people realize that Ken was also an inventor. Combining his unique vision with whathe learned in his Dad’s farm shop, he enjoyed designing a tool or piece of equipment to fill a specific need. He would build a prototype, and make improvements until it worked just the way he intended. Sometimes the end result was just something he used in his business, but sometimes he found a way to put it into production . . . like the sickle guards he built and sold for swathers back in the 1960s. Several items he invented were sold in the turf division of Inman Irrigation: an aerator, a grass seeder, and the Dickens Panbuster which Ken designed together with Loren Dick.Ken and Judy have always enjoyed water recreation; they even owned a little wooden motor boat the first year of their marriage, launching it in the muddy water of Lake Inman and the clear blue water of Table Rock Lake in the Ozarks. A few years later, they bought a cabin at Lake Kanopolis – one of the first cinder block cabins built after the completion of the dam in 1954? Friends were always welcome at the cabin, and many times there were wall-to-wall beds and sleeping bags. All the neighbors and everybody’s relatives were invited to the annual hog roasts . . . and the October wiener roasts down by the lake!On Labor Day 1979, Ken and Judy and their friends had the last big party in that cabin. The next weekend their friends came back to move everything out of the cabin . . . and it was dozed down. By spring 1980, a new cabin stood in its place. This cabin at Lake Kanopolis and his many friends at Yankee Run were a source of great pleasure for Ken. Ken said he felt closer to God there than anywhere else on earth. When flood waters threatened the cabin in 1993, Ken’s friends, employees, and neighbors filled umpteen sandbags and barricaded the walk-out basement from the flood. Memories like that are worth more than money. Ken considered his greatest wealth to be his many friends.Ken survived a heart attack at age 44, and triple by-pass heart surgery seven years later. Ordered by his cardiologist to take some time off from work, Ken was able rest his body, but not his mind. While recuperating, he designed a two-slip boat dock to be built from scrapped irrigation pipe. When the Corp of Engineers required stamped architectural blueprints in order to approve the dock, one of Ken’s customers who is an architect put Ken’s plan on paper and stamped it. Loren Dick did the welding to make that dock a reality. One of Ken’s proudest moments was when that dock was slipped into the waters of Lake Kanopolis just three months after his heart surgery in 1993.Ken always had time to listen, to give counsel when asked, or share his views. He never sought recognition or reward for what he did for others. . . he would rather work quietly behind the scenes. His reward was the satisfaction of seeing a smile on the faces of those he helped to achieve their goal. There were many who sought his counsel: from the employee who asked him to hold his personal checkbook so that he would not overdraw his account. . . or the sick employee who called Ken to take him to the doctor in Wichita in the middle of the night . . .or the sub-contractor who got a break because of the business that Ken sent his way. . . or the many customers who looked to Ken as a consultant for their farming business. . . or the bankers who benefited from his perspective. Ken was one of the early investors in the Inman Industrialorganization, and a member of the Inman Chamber of Commerce. Ken was the recipient of many awards from Valmont for excellence in the management of his business; he was a former member of the Valley Dealer Council.Ken believed in encouraging someone who was doing something right, however small that effort might be. His pat on the back usually brought renewed vigor to the effort, resulting in a greater achievement. Ken did not have much use for (quote) important positions, or titles. His goal was simply to be a friend, someone who cared about other people. His highest compliment for someone was “He is a Good Person”.If there was one title that Ken did enjoy, it was “Grandpa”. His two grandchildren, Christopher and Lindsey (Drake), were his pride and joy. If there was anything that could tear him away from work, it was those two. Ken often planned what he would teach Chris or Lindsey at their next meeting. He enjoyed them as much as any grandpa could, and wanted more than anything to impart his philosophy and attitude about life to them. He once said, “When you do something, you do it because of who you are, not because somebody makes you do it, or because of who the other person is.”Well, Ken. . . we know who we are. . . we are better for having known you. You were that “Good Person”!Godspeed! We’ll see you on the other side!Ken is survived by his wife, Judy Froese, McPherson, KS; brother, Don (Dianne) Froese, Inman KS, brother-in-law Jim Krehbiel, Newton KS, daughter Sherri Evans, Camp Verde AZ; grandchildren Chris (Samantha) Evans, Ozark MO, Drake (James) Loughead, Albuquerque NM, and Mae Manuel, Springfield MO; great grandchildren Kara and Aria Evans, Ozark MO. Ken was preceded in death by his sister Rosanne Krehbiel, and his parents.Services are on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 with a private memorial service and burial, followed by lunch at noon and a Community Celebration of Life at the Inman Community Center.Ken won’t be able to enjoy flowers at the funeral, there will plenty of flowers where he is going. Traci is survived by her loving parents, John and Effie Strayer; her brother, Jason Strayer; her children, Cristi and Travis Martin; her cherished grandchildren, Kieran, Damion, BrynnLee, Adalynn, Alexandria, Parker, and Cambrie; and ex-husband, but still close friend Danny Martin. She also leaves behind her beloved dogs, Kane &amp; Semi, who were as much a part of her family as anyone else.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: grandparents, John and Cora Strayer and George Henry and Bessie May Callis.&nbsp;

Traci had a passion for woodworking and creating; she could craft beauty from the simplest of materials. She took great pride in her yard, finding peace and joy in working outdoors. Her hands were always busy, whether fixing, building, or making something special for those she loved.

Fiercely independent and endlessly determined, Traci was ambitious, dependable, and incredibly handy. She was as mechanical as she was crafty, as bullheaded as she was loving. She spoke her mind with honesty and cared with her whole heart. Traci’s love was big, bold, and unwavering once you had a place in her heart, you had it forever.

Above all, Traci was a helper. She spent her life giving, supporting, and making things better for those around her. Her strength, resilience, and love will never be forgotten.

Alta Louise Allen, 92, of South Hutchinson, died March 27, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. She was born on December 10, 1932, in Colorado Springs, CO, to Cecil and Irene (Louthon) Shaff.

Alta was a 1950 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She enjoyed crafting, cross-stitching, collecting vintage Christmas cards to make crafts, and creating games for her grandchildren. Alta had a sweet-tooth and enjoyed all kinds of desserts. She was known to love jokes and had an underlying humor about her. Alta’s most cherished memories were spent with her family. She was a member of South Hutchinson United Methodist Church for over 75 years. Alta participated in many church activities and groups throughout the years.&nbsp;

On August 6, 1950, she married John W. Allen, in South Hutchinson. Together they shared over 63 years of marriage, prior to his death on March 18, 2014.

She is survived by: her children, Tracy (Barbie) Allen of South Hutchinson, Kathleen Keffer of Hutchinson; daughter in-law, Robin Allen of Leawood; grandchildren, Amber (Marcus) Wright of Norman, OK, Steven Dauber of Buhler, Abby (Tyler) Hicks of Kansas City, KS, Kendra (Shane) Hughes of Leawood, Austin (fiancée Gina Perry) Allen of Mount Hope; and great-grandchildren, Allyson and Camden Wright of Norman, OK, Wyatt and Emmett Dauber of Buhler, Maddox and Keira Hughes of Leawood, and Nolan and Carly Hicks of Kansas City, KS.

Helen Isabel Blevins, 61, of Hutchinson, died March 24, 2025, (as a result of an automobile accident). She was born November 27, 1963, in Garden City, to Pete and Joice (Schriner) Marquardt.

Helen graduated from Garden City High School in 1982. She worked as a CNA and Med Aide in Garden City area nursing homes for many years, at ALCO, in addition to being a school bus driver. Moving to Hutchinson in 2007, Helen worked at Dillon Living Center for a number of years and then had been a driver for RCAT the past 10 years. She loved listening to Christian music, raising chickens, anything related to sunflowers, and watching game shows and home improvement shows on TV. She was of the Lutheran faith.

On January 12, 1985, Helen married John L. Blevins, in Garden City. They recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: her children, Amanda Jones (Jeff) of Hutchinson, Janzen Sangals (Sierra) of Osawatomie, Alyssa Blevins and Stephanie Blevins of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; sister, Sarah Ludwig of Wichita; sister-in-law, Juanita Blevins of Topeka; brothers-in-law, Brian Blevins (Melissa McClaskey) of Olathe, Todd Blevins (Dixie) of Council Bluffs, IA, Mike Blevins (Denise) of Atlantic, IA; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Melanie Holsing; grandson, Isaiah; and sisters, Peggy, Lisa, and Rita.

Eulalia Schroeder, 99, of Goessel, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at the Bethesda Home. She was born on November 5, 1925 in Goessel to Daniel and Maria (Schmidt) Duerksen. Her mother passed when Eulalia was four years old and her father remarried Margaret (Regier) Duerksen, who was a mother to Eulalia and her siblings.

She graduated from Goessel High School with the class of 1944.

Eulalia was a lifelong member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church in Goessel and was baptized on June 13, 1943 by Pastor Peter H. Unruh. Eulalia taught Sunday School to the nursery class for over 30 years and was involved in a church mission society. She still talked about this part of her life up until her passing.

She was united in marriage to Rudolf Schroeder on June 3, 1954 in Goessel. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2015.

Before their marriage, Eulalia babysat and helped care for little children for local families. She was a devoted homemaker and tended to the farm with Rudolf while raising her family. She shared memories about milking the cows with her grandchildren and the staff at Bethesda. Eulalia’s sense of humor was always prevalent and would make anyone she came in contact with smile.

Eulalia is survived by her sons, Larry (Nancy) Schroeder of Inman, and Roy Schroeder and Ed Schroeder, both of Hillsboro; three grandchildren, Scott, Staci, and Lance (Liz) Schroeder; three great-grandchildren, Collins, Claire and Creyton Schroeder; sister, Dora Unruh of Durham; and brother, Marvin (Rosalie) Duerksen of Canton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Ella Duerksen; brother, Milton (Alice) Duerksen; and brother-in-law, Ron Unruh.

The cause of her death was due to AGE and its effects. She graduated from Buhler High School, Buhler, Ks. In 1958. She received an Associate Degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1960 and BSE in Health, Science and Physical Education from Emporia State University in 1962. She did extensive graduate work throughout her teaching career. 

Frances taught K-12 levels for seven years in Kansas and then moved to Loveland in 1969. She taught at Loveland High School from 1969-1976 and moved to the New Thompson Valley High School in 1976 where she retired in 1996. Her teachings in Loveland were in the areas of Health, Physical Education, Swimming, First Aid &amp; CPR and working with special needs students. 

After retiring from teaching, she continued to work at the Dick Hewson Aquatic Center at Thompson Valley High School where she taught swimming, Life guarded lap swim and weekend parties and worked with children with special needs. Finally, saying it was time to lighten the load in 2020, she continued to do weekend checks at the Thompson Valley Pool and play more Golf. 

Full retirement was never a given thought for Frances, she always had something brewing. In 2003, Frances was chosen to be one of Loveland's People Who Make a Difference for that year. Frances was a member of the First Christian Church in Loveland and a former member of the Elks Lodge #1051 in Loveland. 

Frances was preceded in death by both of her parents, a brother (Bud) and the loves of her life Sami and Roski (4-legged Min Pins) and rescued Terrier Mix tripod Darla Sue who developed into a certified Therapy Dog. 

Frances is survived by a very special friend Helene of Ontario, Canada and a nephew Dale (Deb) Morris of Manitoba, Canada. A very special thanks to Shirley Coffman and her friendship which was always there and appreciated. Many thanks to my Loveland family of friends, you are the best! 

There will be NO services and Cremation will take place. My ashes and the ashes of my dogs will be place together and committed back to earth.

Barbara Sue (Martin) Temaat, 84, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025 in her home. She was born on June 17, 1940 in Hutchinson to Robert S and Jennie Almeda (Chapman) Martin.

Barbara graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957 and was fall homecoming queen. She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell.

Barbara married James A Temaat in 1962. To this union, three boys were born, Scott, Michael, and Todd. They divorced in 1984.

She had an in-home daycare for many years and then worked and retired from Alco and the Wichita Eagle.

She was a member of Abundant Harvest Church of the Nazarene and First Christian Church in Pratt. She enjoyed doing ceramics, knitting, and flower gardening.

She is survived by her sons, Scott (Roxan) Temaat of Derby, Michael (Shannon) Temaat of Whitestown, Indiana, and Todd (Sherra) Temaat of Edmond, Oklahoma; brother, Robert (Ann) Martin of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren, Priscilla "Pat" (Zack) McShane and Cristi Temaat, Brillana and Elliot Temaat, Erich, Austin (Kayla), Isaac, and Ashlyn Temaat; and eight great-grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, Larry Martin.

Visitation with family receiving friends will be Saturday, March 29, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 31, 2025 at Fairlawn Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Barbara Sue (Martin) Temaat | 1940-2025 |

James A Byrd was born on February 22, 1949, in Dallas, Texas. In September of that year, he moved to Joplin, Missouri, where he was raised and educated.

On February 4, 1959, he became a member of the Lord’s family, a faith he carried throughout his life.

At the age of 17, James enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1966. He was first assigned to the USS Rehoboth, an oceanography survey ship, and later served aboard the USS Tolovana, an oil tanker. His service included two Far East tours and eight months off the coast of Vietnam.

In January 1968, his ship was deployed to Korea in response to the USS Pueblo seizure. Shortly after, he witnessed the Tet Offensive, one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War.

Following his return to the U.S., James underwent training in Security Intelligence and weapons in Coronado, California.

He was then deployed to Da Nang, Vietnam, where he served in the Security Police Division at Tien Sha Peninsula, defending Camp Tien Sha and its surrounding areas.

For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. He was honorably discharged on September 16, 1969, after serving three years, four months, and 14 days—nearly three years of which were overseas.

A proud veteran, James was actively involved in organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Vietnam Veterans of America.

In 1982, he founded J.A. Byrd Exterminating and Pest Control Company in Joplin, Missouri, operating it for 30+ years. His professionalism earned him contracts with major companies such as CFI Trucking, The Joplin Globe, and Leggett &amp; Platt Inc.

On April 18, 2005, James married Gail (Blevins) Byrd in Miami, Oklahoma. In 2013, due to health concerns, they relocated to South Hutchinson, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife Gail; stepson Adam Fairbanks (Kari); stepdaughter Erin Beckman (Ben); and grandchildren Ethan, Evan, Hayley, Othel, Nikita, Timmy, and River. And many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Bigley and Talmadge Leon Byrd; stepfather Ralph Bigley; son James Richard Byrd; brother Tommy Leon Byrd; and sisters Frances Atkinson, Georgia Louise Fletchall, Henria McCoy, and Dorothy Phillips.

A devoted Christian, James was a faithful member of Better Life Ministries/Hutch.

A service will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 4 p.m. at Better Life Ministries/Hutch, 113 East 4th Street, Hutchinson, Kansas. Pastor Jon Wuthnow presiding.

Gary Winter, 73, died March 25, 2025, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. He was born to Arnold and Elsie Fehdrau Winter on December 9, 1951, in McPherson, Kansas. While growing up, he enjoyed goofing off with friends, farming for his favorite neighbor G.G. Kaufman and working at the grocery store for Ike. He graduated from Inman High School.

He was a truck driver for most of his life, his handle being “Rain Maker.” He preferred to stay close to home, unless he was driving with his friend Clarence Ledbetter, who had taught him a lot about trucking. He later formed his own trucking company, Winter Trucking. He retired from MKC as a fuel truck driver, where he loved delivering fuel to farmers and companies.

Gary had also worked for the City of Inman with his brother-in-law, Bill Maurer and Jason Stubby. His most proud accomplishment was proposing and making the city park pond.

His hobbies included fishing on anything from farm ponds to lakes to the deep sea, a love he got from his dad. He also enjoyed tinkering to fixing and painting anything and everything.

Gary was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On September 2, 1989, he married Vivian Bowman in McPherson. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Ashley Bowman, Inman; a son, Shane Bowman and Amanda, Inman; grandchildren, Kadence and Talon Welch and Owen Dirks, all of Inman; sister, Donna Maurer, Inman; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2-4pm Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 31, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.
