But you can’t see what those shades of gray keep covered

If you are from the Plains region, your social media feed is probably filled with wheat harvest photos right now.

Hot, dry winds roll across fields of golden waving wheat. Friends and family come together to drive combines, grain trucks, “the old wheat truck” and “the new semi” late into the night to bring in the crop. Famous home-cooked meals are served out of the back of SUVs. Heavenly displays of color created by the dust-filled air as the sun sets over the heart of America.

However, the country song “In Color” is spot on that “seeing it in color” by living through an event is so much more powerful. A picture can’t quite capture an air of excitement, comradery of families and communities working together, or pride in an honest day’s work. No picture, black and white or color, can capture the true heart of the experience.

In recent years, farmers and ranchers have become frustrated with “city people” who have never been on a real farm because they can’t seem understand that even though farming is truly a passion it is full of challenges.

For example, harvest is such a whirlwind because farmers are terrified if they don’t get wheat out of the field hail, fire or bugs could destroy it. An entire year’s income is tied up in each field and farmers aren’t actually rich, they just have larger bills than most other people. It’s not uncommon to go days or weeks without tucking their kids into bed, a proper night’s sleep or a moment of downtime. The seeds, chemicals and other scientifically developed farming practices we use are what we believe to be the best, safest tools to grow healthy food.

A city person scrolling through social media probably doesn’t appreciate (or maybe even care about) all my feelings about wheat harvest. Pictures are informative and can help tell a story, but they can’t provide context, background and first-hand feelings created by seeing the true colors of an experience with your own eyes.

Our national conversation is consumed with Black Lives Matter, protests, race and injustice. I see these stories and feel like an outsider looking at another family’s photo album. I can see what is happening and the emotions of the participants, but I can only guess at what they feel  and have no understanding of each snapshots’ value. I am not part of their experience.

No matter how much I want to understand, I can’t wrap my brain around what it is like to be a black man living in America. However, I do understand some of their emotions: helplessness, frustration, fear and anger.

It’s OK if you aren’t a vocal participant in the national conversation. It is actually very appropriate if you lack experience with the topics. But please, do not dismiss these conversations. They are happening for a reason.

The world is not black and white. Taking a color-blind approach and ignoring race hides so many valuable things in the shades of gray. Our world is full of color and colorful people for a reason.

We have an opportunity to make it better. A moment to ask genuine questions and have uncomfortable conversations, raise our voices against injustice and show compassion for others’ struggles, and seek to understand the cultures of our fellow humans.

Don’t experience life scrolling through other people’s photos. Go see it in color.

Rev up your engines! The Kansas State Fair is bringing action-packed motorsport events to the Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand this September.

The dirt-filled weekend begins with the Moto Madness &amp; Fire Thrill Show - a new event slated for 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Then, returning by popular demand, is the All Star Monster Truck Tour, which will invade the Fairgrounds for an afternoon of destruction at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. 

The Fair’s annual Demolition Derby is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. Tickets for all three events are now on sale.

The popularity of last year’s monster truck tour is one reason the Fair decided to bring the event back in 2020 and expand the grandstand’s dirt event offerings, said the Fair’s General Manager Robin Jennison.

“These events allow our patrons to have a good time and make memories with their families,” Jennison said. “That’s the most rewarding experience we can create here at the Kansas State Fair.” 

“You can expect a lot of destruction,” added Jennison. “These massive vehicles will race and crash, get huge air, do wheelies and all kinds of things. They put on a great show.”

The All Star Monster Truck Tour features the biggest names from across the United States to do battle on the Fair’s large grandstand infield. These All Star Monster Trucks will be competing in an insane best trick competition, full-throttle obstacle course racing and a no-rules freestyle battle. Trucks coming to the Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand:

IRON OUTLAW – TV Superstar truck that has competed in the United States Canada and Mexico.

BOUNTY HUNTER - This Kansas native is a two-time Monster Jam World Champion.

SCARLET BANDIT - Another truck from Kansas, Scarlet Bandit's Dawn is also the nation's top female competitor.

JEKYLL &amp; HYDE – The split personality monster truck from Tonganoxie, Kansas.

TWISTED ADDICTION – The wheelie king from Missouri.

Joining the All Star Monster Trucks will be the nation's best professional ATV competitors racing over a course of dirt jumps and tight turns against the clock.

About the Moto Madness &amp; Fire Thrill Show

Moto Madness &amp; Fire Thrill Show includes motocross stunts and extreme sports action, featuring both professional ATV racers and freestyle motocross riders — some flying over a 75-foot-wide gap at more than 30 feet in the air.

Among the highlights is the Kamakazie Kid Fire Thrill Show starring Guinness Book of World Records title holder Levi Troutman from Wyoming. Troutman will perform the "Body Burn" — running across the grandstand racetrack engulfed in flames. Also part of the show is the "Torpedo Crash" — an insane metal mayhem car crash stunt. Moreover, fairgoers will see a special "teaser" for Sunday's Monster Truck Show as the Twisted Addiction monster truck performs a car crushing freestyle exhibition.

Those wanting the ultimate experience can purchase the VIP Experience for both the monster truck and motocross event. VIP Experience tickets are $35 per person.

All ticket holders will receive one ride on one of two new, 12-foot-tall, 10,000-pound monster trucks. There is no age limit or height restrictions.

All other seating is general admission. Ticket prices are $15 for ages 13 and older; $5 for ages 6 through 12; and children 5 and under are free. General admission tickets do not include gate admission to the Fair.

Monster truck rides will be available before and after the show at an extra cost to general admission ticket holders.

Monster truck, motocross action to invade 2020 Kansas State Fair

The Harvey County Health Department has confirmed its 20th and 21st cases of COVID-19 in Harvey County.

The confirmed cases are a male in his 60s and a female in her teens. Both individuals were close contacts of separate, known active cases. They had each previously quarantined as a precaution, and are now in home isolation.

One test was completed by a private lab. The other was completed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories. The Harvey County Health Department will regularly monitor the individuals, as well as follow up on all contacts.

Harvey County has had 21 COVID-19 cases to date, including 17 confirmed and four probable cases. There are six known active cases in Harvey County. There have been 1,287 tests conducted in Harvey County.

As of Friday, the KDHE confirmed 12,059 cases of COVID-19 in the state to date. The KDHE reported 147,413 completed tests in Kansas.

Harvey County transitioned to the Phase Out guidance of its Harvey County Health Reopening Plan as of June 17. However, the County has restricted visitation at long-term care facilities through June 23.

Damage reports in Sunday storms

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A subcommittee has been formed and work will begin on a possible redrafting of regulations regarding wind farms in Reno County. The action comes after a public meeting Thursday night hosted by the county Planning Commission. The meeting was for discussion only and is really just the starting point.

“There are no specifics given by the Planning Commission at this time,” County Planner Mark Vonachen said. “They just want to see a draft of the proposed wind regulations and then we will take it from that point forward.”

A small group of officials will be the ones who will look over any possible changes to the regulations that have been spearheaded by residents who want to see more control over wind energy ever since NextEra proposed a wind farm in southern parts of the county — a project that is strongly opposed by residents in that area.

“A subcommittee was developed consisting of the chairman of the Planning Commission, myself and Don Brittain, who is the director of Public Works,” Vonachen said. “That committee will be charged with bringing forward a draft of the wind regulations to the full Planning Commission.”

Vonachen wanted to stress that anything the subcommittee or the Planning Commission comes up with in regards to any new regulations still has to pass through the County Commission.

“Whatever we bring forward has to be approved by the county commissioners. They’ll have a chance to review that,” Vonachen said. “They can review that and accept the recommendations, they can make changes to that recommendation, they can deny it . . . and leave everything else as it is.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was the County Commission that denied a conditional use permit for NextEra because it could not reach a unanimous vote. Any change to the regulations needs only a majority vote or, in this case, a 2-1 count.

Vonachen says they hope to have something for the Planning Commission to look over in 30 to 60 days.

Subcommittee starts wind regulation process

"This began in March, a really significant downturn," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. "In quarter one, we had a decline of a little over 4%, almost 5% in GDP. This is a survey of rural bank CEOs in 10 states, including Kansas."

Kansas specifically is trending down at about the same rate as the rest of the region.

"If you look at last year at this time, Kansas urban area is down in employment about 9 to 10%, likewise the rural areas, down about 9 to 10%. That's better than the region. The region is down about 12%, that's rural areas of the ten-state region, which is heavily dependent on agriculture, right down the middle of the country."

Agriculture is being challenged right now, as the global pandemic is having a negative effect on export markets.

"The question is, is the recovery, once it begins, is it going to be shaped like a V, a U, or a W?" Goss asked. "Right now, it's still up in the air."

The truth is an event like the global pandemic hasn't occurred in about a century and there aren't numbers available from back then that reflect the interconnected economy we have today.

Goss: Economy still struggling, recovery type still up in the air

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An early Saturday morning accident resulted in one person being checked out by Reno County EMS.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Department, just before 1:15 a.m. Saturday deputies, fire and EMS were called to 5600 East 4th for a single vehicle injury accident.

Fifty-five-year-old Lisa Anthony was driving east on 4th Avenue. 

While driving, another vehicle passed her and hit its brakes. Anthony applied her brakes to avoid a collision. The vehicle in front of her accelerated to the proper speed limit and braked again. Anthony said she slammed on her brakes and swerved to the left to avoid colliding with the vehicle. 

Anthony's vehicle exited the road to the left and went into a ditch, then came out of the ditch and struck a decorative brick half wall located on the west side of the driveway to 5600 East 4th Avenue. The vehicle continued through the bricks and struck a pillar to the front porch of the residence which is where it came to a stop.

Anthony was checked out by EMS but not transported. She was wearing her seatbelt.

The fair announced it is taking some steps to try to keep the public safe during the pandemic age we live in.&nbsp;

Such precautions include oneway routes through buildings, more hand sanitizing stations and practicing proper hygiene etiquette. The fair is also encouraging patrons to purchase tickets online or at Dillons stores.&nbsp;

The fair recently took steps to make it easier for commercial vendors to participate in the fair by extending deadlines for deposits and for making a commitment to display at this year’s event.

General Manager Robin Jennison says he is confident the fair will go on as scheduled and that the fair is making changes with the health and safety of the fairgoers in mind.&nbsp;

The 107th Kansas State Fair kicks off Sept. 11.

Kansas State Fair taking precautions for this year's event 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will seek approval to hand out about $90,000 of the CDBG-CV funds during a special meeting Tuesday.

The city provided a list of 11 recipients from 13 applications for the funds that were provided to both the city and county. The city and county are each getting $132,000 to distribute.

The list of businesses includes food service, small businesses and day cares. The grants range from $2,500 all the way to $20,000. City Planner Ryan Hvitlok said earlier in the week that, if there were still funds available, they would put out a second request for applications. If approved by the council as is, there would still be about $30,000 available after administration costs.&nbsp;

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

City Council to take action on CDBG grants Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center (HAC) is seeking visual art submissions in a variety of media, such as photography, painting, illustration, or mixed media, for an upcoming juried exhibition titled “Dialogue Reconstructed - Celebrating Diversity Through Art.”

This exhibition is a collaboration between the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Hutchinson Chapter, Hutch In Harmony and Hutchinson Reno Arts and Humanities (HRAH).&nbsp;

The center is encouraging artists to showcase their work to celebrate diversity in the communities. There is no specific theme requirement for submission. The selected winners' artwork will then be presented to the HAC Collections Committee to be considered for addition into the HAC Permanent Collection.

Sia Joung, assistant professor of art at Sterling College, and Patrick Calvillo, director of the Hutchinson Art Center, will be curating this exhibition. The selected jurors will include a representative from each of the collaborating organizations.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Art Center makes call for new exhibition

Kan. —&nbsp;The habits that Reno County Health Department Director Nick Baldetti would like people to keep once COVID-19 is not an immediate threat are simple.

"It's nothing new," Baldetti said. "The awareness and persistence of best hygiene practices and washing your hands and upper respiratory etiquette, especially in the fall and winter months, are probably the practices that we'd like to bring back to the forefront as best practices, because it's the same things that we advocate for in terms of influenza."

Getting the politics out of mask wearing isn't something Baldetti has an answer to.

"I think we simply have to have leadership in this country stop weaponizing the aspect of best practices for health," Baldetti said. "Unfortunately, I think, I don't expect that to go away anytime soon."

Mask wearing is still a good practice, in Baldetti's opinion.

"The science shows us that mask use significantly lowers the spread of the aerosolization of the viral body," Baldetti said. "Because the virus itself travels through the upper respiratory pathways, which presents in terms of the microdroplets that are expressed every time you and I talk, sneeze, breathe, etc."

Baldetti acknowledges that because it is an election year, the politicization of whether or not to wear masks likely isn't something that can change back at this point.

Baldetti: Best practices shouldn't be political issue

Demand continues to increase as the summer solstice approaches, so gas prices have continued to rise in Kansas.

"Since mid-May nationwide, gasoline demand has increased 18% to about 7.9 million barrels per day," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That slow but steady demand has pushed the national gas price up by 13% in that same time frame. In Kansas, today's average gas price is $1.90, which is up from $1.58 a month ago."

"If we look at Reno County, we're averaging $1.89 a gallon," Steward said. "In the Hutchinson area, we see $1.89 up to $1.93 at most stations."

Gas will continue to go up in the short term, but not dramatically right away.

"More driving is leading to growing gasoline demand," Steward said. "It's slow but steady, but we don't anticipate seeing a spike to typical summer prices. The demand this summer won't be sufficient to drive down the stock levels of gas that we had in the system backed up from during the shutdowns during the coronavirus. There's so much oil and gas in the system. It's taking a while for us to work through that."

With that said, gas will likely get above $2 a gallon at some point, but not near $2.50 as it has been during the summer in past years.

Kansas First District Congressman Roger Marshall signed on Thursday as an original cosponsor of the JUSTICE Act, the House companion to legislation introduced by Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), and sponsored by Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08), who has over 20 years of law enforcement experience.

"What this legislation does is it provides more training for the police, more transparency and more accountability," Marshall said. 

Marshall's father was the El Dorado, KS police chief when he was growing up.

"One of his common things he taught us was two wrongs don't make a right," Marshall said. "We saw these riots happen, this vandalism happen, I knew that wasn't right and I didn't want to overreact, I always want to err on the side of protecting the police and making sure we have law and order. I think that this legislation that we've come up with does just that."

Among other provisions, this bill would require reporting on Use of Force and No-Knock Warrants, require law enforcement agencies to maintain and share disciplinary records, make lynching a federal crime, provide $500 million for state and local agencies to equip all officers with body cameras, and $225 million in grant funding for de-escalation training.

"Here in the past two weeks, we've been in almost 60 cities and everywhere I go, people tell me, we are a nation of law and order," Marshall said. "We can continue to have the debate, we can continue to have peaceful protests, but what we cannot have are riots and vandalism."

Republican U.S. Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, announced Wednesday that he is fast-tracking the legislation on his side by using a procedural motion to try to start debate on the bill next week.

Marshall cosponsors police reform bill

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man who has served time for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison following his sentencing in two felony cases Thursday in Reno County District Court. 

Thirty-eight-year-old Armando Fierro was given a controlling sentence of 83-months by Judge Trish Rose. Fierro pleaded guilty to lesser charges of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated arson and aggravated child endangerment on March 6th. He was facing a charge of kidnapping in the case. He was also sentenced for possession of meth and DUI in a separate case.

Fierro was arrested on June 6th, 2019 during a domestic disturbance. Police were called on the report of an aggravated battery. The victim was able to escape and call the police.

When officers entered the home, they could see pillows in the living room had been set on fire near where a propane tank was sitting. 

Fierro’s prior convictions include attempted murder in the shotgun shooting of Lloyd Eddens, back in 2000. He served 14 years in that case.

Hutchinson man given nearly seven years in domestic case

No additional COVID-19 cases were found after testing was completed at the Diversicare of Sedgwick nursing facility.

Residents and staff of the facility were tested for COVID-19 after a Diversicare employee was confirmed to have COVID-19 this past week. Testing included 93 combined residents and staff.

The employee that previously tested positive for COVID-19, a Harvey County woman in her 20s, was part of a cluster of 22 cases announced June 10 at the Diversicare of Haysville nursing facility. The woman works at Diversicare facilities in both Haysville and Sedgwick.

This remains the only known active COVID-19 case in Harvey County.

Harvey County has transitioned to the Phase Out guidance of its Harvey County Health Reopening Plan. However, the County has restricted visitation at long-term care facilities through June 23.

“We appreciate the partnerships and support our long-term care facilities have given us as we try to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Harvey County Health Department Director Lynnette Redington. “We know COVID-19 has not gone away. It continues to be important that we all do our part to keep our family, friends and our communities healthy.”

Harvey County has had 16 total COVID-19 cases, including 12 confirmed and four probable cases.

As of today, there have been 1,192 COVID-19 tests conducted in Harvey County.

Diversicare testing in Harvey County completed; no new cases

PRATT, Kan. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a Kansas man after a fight. Police in Pratt said in a Facebook post that officers and an emergency medical crew found 57-year-old Frank O. “Butch” Sturgeon lying on the floor of a garage Wednesday while responding to a disturbance. 

He had sustained a head trauma and was unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died. 

Police said the preliminary investigation found that Sturgeon, who was from Pratt, fell during an altercation. The release said police will present their findings to prosecutors when their investigation is completed. No other details were immediately released, including whether anyone has been arrested.&nbsp;

The parent company of Dillons reported first quarter net earnings were $1.21 million or $1.52 per diluted share, compared with $0.95 per share a year earlier. Digital sales grew 92% during the quarter and operating profit increased from $901 million to $1.3 billion.

Kroger provided $830 million in funds to its employees during the pandemic and took numerous measures to protect employees and customers during the pandemic. The company also contributed an additional $236 million to multi-employer pension plans to help stabilize future associate benefits.  

Reports on the second quarter of the year kick off when Union Pacific rolls out its report on July 16.

Kroger posts strong first quarter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The first of two vaccination clinics put on by Hutchinson USD 308 is set for Friday. The clinic is from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Hutchinson High School SAC. These clinics are being held in collaboration with the Reno County Health Department.

The goal of the clinics is to provide an opportunity for incoming seventh grade students and incoming juniors at HHS to receive the required vaccinations. At the vaccination clinics, face masks are recommended but not required as part of COVID-19 precautions. Families are asked to practice social distancing.

Only the student receiving the shot and a guardian may come into the SAC.

A student’s immunizations must be on record with the school nurse before the first day of school to avoid exclusion. Students who have received immunizations need to make sure their provider has shared that information with the school.

First of 2 vaccination clinics set for Friday at HHS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — When the city of Hutchinson ended the suspension of service cutoffs for unpaid utilities June 1, the city was owed more than $82,000. But residents are paying the back-utility bills and catching up again. 

As of this morning, the city was down to $14,910 worth of outstanding bills. There are only 135 active accounts over 30 days past due and that represents $14,764 of the total outstanding balance. 

Nicole Martinez, utility billing manager for the city, says they have had a great response to the extended payment plans and continue to encourage citizens to reach out for payment options to avoid disconnection and additional fees.

Kan. —&nbsp;Bob Hamilton is running for the United States Senate as a Republican, and he was in Hutchinson Thursday morning. He knows the people in the Big First district know some of his opponents a lot better than they know him.

"I started a business in 1983 in the Kansas City area," Hamilton said. "It was just my wife and I and we've grown that business to over 160 people in the Kansas City area with high-paying jobs and health care for all of my employees."

Hamilton is not a career politician and he considers that an advantage in helping President Trump.

"I don't think politics is rocket science," Hamilton said. "I think anybody can figure it out, well maybe not everybody, because we're sending professional politicians that can't figure anything out up to Washington. We need an outsider that knows how to get things done, that knows how to fix things. That's been my whole career is fixing things. That's what we need."

Hamilton admits he doesn't have the agriculture background that the retiring Pat Roberts has.

"I don't understand all the idiosyncrasies of ag, but I own quite a bit of farm ground myself," Hamilton said. "I work with four different farmers that farm my ground. I'm close to the ag people. I would love to get on the ag committee when I'm up in Washington, because, you know, farmers, I want to make sure we have their back. We need to support our farmers and our family farms and to revive our family farms."
