PRATT COUNTY—Three people died in an accident just before 3 p.m. Friday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Ford Taurus driven by William Fowler Stevens, 32, Woodward, Oklahoma, was southbound on Kansas 61 two miles north of Preston.

The Taurus crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2014 Ford Fusion driven by Joshua Jamal Townsell, 30, Omaha, head-on.

Stevens,&nbsp;Townsell and a juvenile in the Fusion were pronounced dead at the scene. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

2 adults, juvenile dead after Pratt County head-on crash

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Oxford House is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Night fundraiser in South Hutchinson on March 17. &nbsp;

“We do fundraisers all year, to help send Oxford House members to the [Oxford House] World Convention,” Stephen Bonnar, Oxford House Chapter 13 vice-chairman and State Housing Services West co-chairman, said.&nbsp;

The Oxford House World Convention is an annual event where Oxford members from all over the U.S. gather to share their stories and promote recovery from addiction. &nbsp;

Events will include a fish fry dinner, raffles, an auction, and of course, bingo. &nbsp;

Bingo cards are one for $3 and two for $5. People who buy five bingo cards will receive a free blackout ticket.&nbsp;

There will be raffle and bingo prizes. &nbsp;

While the fish fry dinner is free, donations for the meal would be appreciated. &nbsp;

Additionally, there will be a guest speaker. &nbsp;

Ryan Eilers, Oxford House Chapter 13 Housing Services chairman, will be talking about his personal journey in recovery, including his Oxford House experience and how the nonprofit has helped him. &nbsp;

Eilers will begin speaking at 8 p.m. &nbsp;

Following Eilers, there will be an auction. Items include firepits, an outdoor furniture, and more. &nbsp;

Oxford House’s St. Patrick’s Day Bingo Night fundraiser will take place at Our Lady Guadalupe Church located at 612 Maple St. in South Hutchinson. It will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. &nbsp;

All other affected traffic will be detoured. This intersection is expected to reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21.

11th and Adams closed until Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss is not surprised that his Rural Mainstreet Index dipped below growth neutral to its lowest level since October 2022.

"I will say, it was somewhat expected, just a lot of negatives out there," Goss said. "Not just the bank problems. Oil prices, for example, dropped dramatically this month. We also had the 10-year Treasury, which is an important signal, an important measure of the economy, drop by almost 50 basis points, or half a percentage point, so those are some real, absolutely not good numbers out there."

Another concern is that the growth of land values is slowing considerably.

"We asked the bank CEOs to look out the next 12 months and say how much do you expect farmland prices to change by, it's only one percent growth," Goss said. "That's after a 9% growth over the past 12 months. The bankers are already seeing not as much growth in farmland prices. Farmland prices in our survey have now grown for 30 straight months. The farm sector, it tends to be in pretty good shape out there. Lots of other businesses on what we call Rural Mainstreet that aren't doing that well."

Goss does see a continued downturn on the horizon.

"The odds are, we're going to see a recession by the end of the year, or perhaps the first quarter of next year," Goss said. "The deal is done, almost. We're talking about some real not such good numbers. Their surveys, the sample response rates are coming down. In other words, what we call the confidence interval for any, like the unemployment rate, the employment, all those numbers are getting more and more questionable, because of the response rate from businesses that respond to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There's some doubts about the validity of some of the numbers."

Goss said it will be important to watch the Federal Reserve's actions later in the month. He thinks they may hold fast on interest rates instead of going through with another hike.

Goss: Signs pointing negative for economy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — StartUp Hutch announced on March 17, thirteen entrepreneurs from Reno County have successfully graduated from the "Growing Rural Businesses" program, an intensive eight-week series of workshops. The program was made possible through a partnership between StartUp Hutch, WSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and NetWork Kansas.&nbsp;

“We strive to provide opportunities to entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey,” Jackson Swearer, StartUp Hutch Entrepreneur Navigator and Director, said. “I was excited to watch business owners from all over Reno County come together to spend time working on their business.”&nbsp;

The graduates are a diverse group, including six men and seven women representing the retail, service, manufacturing, and agriculture industries. The majority of participants operate in Hutchinson, but businesses from across Reno County were represented at this training. The training was designed to help rural businesses expand strategically.&nbsp;

“This was one of the most fun and engaged groups we have ever had,” Nancy Kersenbrock, Assistant Director for the WSU Center for Entrepreneurship, said.&nbsp;

During the program, participants received valuable guidance and practical strategies from WSU Center for Entrepreneurship trainers. Trainers changed from week to week, and included experienced professionals and Wichita State University professors.&nbsp;

The workshops covered a wide range of essential topics, including marketing, sales techniques, legal structures, and finances. By completing the course, these local entrepreneurs are now better equipped to expand their existing businesses in Reno County.&nbsp;

Growing rural businesses graduates get certificates

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will have a study session on the future of water in the city on Tuesday. Reno County is interested in developing a water district to serve areas south of Hutchinson.

They asked the City to determine how much water is available for purchase and how much that water would cost.

Before spending time and money on the development of a wholesale water agreement, staff with the city focused on addressing the first question, how much water is available for purchase. In an effort to help the City make an informed decision, Burns &amp; McDonnell was hired to&nbsp;develop a 20-year water demand projection for the City of Hutchinson, and Kansas Water Resources Consulting (KWRC) was brought in to evaluate the City’s water rights and develop a strategy to perfect the City’s uncertified water rights.

During the Study Session, Burns &amp; McDonnell and KWRC will present information from reports provided to the governing body.

According to Burns &amp; McDonnell, the wholesale opportunity based on the current perfected water right is approximately 0.28 million gallons per day in 2043 and the wholesale opportunity based on the current authorized water right is approximately 1.46 million gallons per day in 2043.

Kansas Water Resources Consulting is recommending to the city that there are two potential opportunities to expand its overall quantity limitation with its existing wells. Those are requesting additional time to perfect and filing new applications on its existing wells.

The consultant also recommends the city request GMD 2 to provide its preliminary Safe Yield evaluations at each uncertified water right well location and develop a proposal for a series of new applications and limitations that would allow the city additional opportunity to increase its overall limitation consistent with their original approvals but within the principle of Safe Yield.

The consultant also suggests that the city meet with the Chief Engineer at the state to review the approaches to provide more time to increase the City’s overall limitation.

The study session will be Tuesday following the regular council meeting.

City Council to study water reports

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo March Volunteer Open House is this weekend. The event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Zoo Education and Event Center at 6 Emerson Loop East in Hutchinson. The event is designed for those ages 14 and up.

The Zoo relies on the community to help with daily operations. They are gearing up for the busy summer season. 

During the event, the Zoo will talk about open opportunities and can help to find the right fit for anyone who wants to help.

Volunteers work in almost every area of the zoo. They help with the gift shop, driving the train, preparing food for the animals, gardening, helping zookeepers, assisting with visitors, and helping with special projects and events.&nbsp;

The event is free to attend, and you don't have to choose whether or not to volunteer until after you have learned about it. If you go and then you decide you want to help, you'll complete a volunteer application and a background check. There will then be a separate group orientation for those who choose to volunteer.&nbsp;

Zoo volunteer event Saturday

LINDSBORG, Kan. — 2023 is a milestone year for the Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum. 

Each spring, the museum hosts Millfest – a family event celebrating the history of the mill and the pioneer heritage of the region. Millfest is held the first weekend in May and features guided tours of the mill in operation. This year, the event is Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 120 East Mill Street in Lindsborg.

In 2023, Millfest will celebrate 125 years since Smoky Valley Roller Mills was built.

Professional millers run the mill (without grain) and tours are available for visitors age 13 and older. Other activities include a traditional arts fair, including a quilt show, live musical entertainment, and great food.

Maples graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communication at the end of 2021.

Cosmosphere welcomes new public relations and volunteer coordinator

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Laugh your way to the finish line at&nbsp;<a href="https://runsignup.com/Race/KS/Hutchinson/MineRun5K" target="_blank">Strataca's</a> first Fools Day 5K taking place on April 1. &nbsp;

This unique 5K cross country style run is 650 feet below the Earth’s surface in Strataca’s famous and&nbsp;active salt mine. &nbsp;

This race is a fundraiser for Strataca, The Kansas Underground Salt Museum.&nbsp;

For logistical reasons, the race will be ran&nbsp;in heats.  &nbsp;

“We can only take 30 people underground at a time, and for that reason we’ve spread it into heats,” said Rachel Terry, Strataca operations manager. “Thirty at each time frame, going down every 15 minutes.” &nbsp;

Heats are limited to the first 30 participants to sign up. &nbsp;

If someone signs up for a late heat, and there is empty space in the heats ahead, that person will move into an earlier heat and will be notified via email before race day. &nbsp;

People will have the opportunity to time themselves by using clocks at the start and finish lines. &nbsp;

Participants may run or walk this event. Those that choose to walk are asked to select a heat earlier in the day. &nbsp;

All walkers and runners still on the course at 1 p.m.&nbsp;will be picked up and driven to the finish line.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Runners and walkers will need to bring: &nbsp;

A helmet. Stataca recommends a bike helmet. All helmets will be subject to approval by staff.&nbsp;

&nbsp;A light. A headlamp on a&nbsp;helmet works great. It does get dark in the mines. &nbsp;

For t-shirt orders, sizes and availability cannot&nbsp;be guaranteed at this point. The first 200 registrants are guaranteed a medal. &nbsp;

No one under age eight&nbsp;may enter and ages eight to eighteen&nbsp;must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their&nbsp;scheduled heat to pick up their&nbsp;race packet. Late arrivials&nbsp;may have to race in the next available heat.&nbsp;

Strataca Fools Day 5K beginning of April

Hutch Post, in partnership with Steve Harmon and the Conard-Harmon Collection, is proud to present Throwback Thursday. Enjoy a weekly release from Steve Harmon as he presents the "Hutch - Then &amp; Now Collection."

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of Avenue B and Main Streets.

In 1898, it became apparent that Reno County needed a new and larger courthouse. Bonds were passed in 1899 and 200 S. Main was selected for the location. 

Architect D.T. Depry of Hutch was selected to design it. The cornerstone was laid on Aug. 2 of 1900. It took almost a year for construction at a final cost of $54,000.

It opened June 25, 1901. The first photo shows the courthouse finished with the jail immediately behind it at 15 E. Ave. B. 

Everything went along fine until 1924 when the courthouse started developing large cracks in the brick and limestone walls due to settling.

It was decided that the settling was being caused by the Carey Salt brine plant south of the courthouse. The courthouse was abandoned in 1927 and offices were scattered around the city until a replacement courthouse was built. 

After the property was cleared, Dillons purchased it and built a new Dillons Food Market #1 in 1933. The second photo shows that store about 1950. This store was here from 1934 to 1979. 

In 1981, Dillons worked a deal with The Salvation Army to open a thrift store in the old building. The third photo shows the 200 S. Main property today, still housing The Salvation Army Thrift Store, overseen by Maj. Paul James from their home at 700 N. Walnut.

The city agreed, so this year the garage sale and clean up day in South Hutch will be the weekend of April 21-22. 

In 2022, the city created a Google sign up sheet where residents participating in the garage sale could provide the day, time, address, and types of items they were planning on selling so that garage sale enthusiasts could plan their weekend.

In the near future, the city will post a link to the sheet on its social media pages so that residents can sign up and advertise a sale.

Dumpsters for the city cleanup will be stationed over at the ball diamonds like they were the last two years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

South Hutch garage sale day next month

TOPEKA — A new website created by the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, in collaboration with industry experts, provides a close-up look at all 140 public-use airports across the state and their impact on the communities they serve. Online dashboards provide the conditions of airport runways, economic impact data, future airport needs and more.

According to the dashboard, the Hutchinson Airport as of 2022 has an economic output of $22,534,223, supports 155 jobs and $6,047,638 in wages. This is an extrapolation from a 2016 study conducted by Burns &amp; McDonnell.

&nbsp;“Every airport serves a unique and important role for their community,” said Bob Brock, KDOT Director of Aviation. “It is this uniqueness that makes credible data on individual airports even more important to local, state and national decision-makers.”

&nbsp;The Division of Aviation worked with aviation industry leaders to publish key airport performance data online. Two new tools on this website offer precise aviation economic impact data for each community as well as current information on the status of airport pavement health used to program long-term airport investments.

While overall prospects for the 2023 Kansas wheat harvest remain dim due to sustained drought conditions, producers who have received timely moisture are encouraged to enter the 2023 National Wheat Yield Contest.&nbsp;

“No one can deny Mother Nature has not been kind to this year’s winter wheat crop in Kansas,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “Even with the drought, we encourage producers to enter the National Wheat Yield Contest to demonstrate how their management practices maximize moisture when available and improve both yields and quality.”&nbsp;

The National Wheat Yield Contest is organized by the National Wheat Foundation (NWF). The contest is divided into two primary competition categories: winter wheat and spring wheat, and two subcategories: dryland and irrigated.&nbsp;

Entries for winter wheat are open until May 15, 2023, with each entry costing $100. Each contestant must save an eight-pound sample of their wheat. The 24 national winners will send in their samples for analysis of milling and baking characteristics. Depending on the class, wheat samples must also exceed 57 or 58 pound test weight to compete.&nbsp;

Kansas farmers must be members of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers to enter the national contest.
