TOPEKA, Kan. — Leadership Kansas, one of the country's oldest and most distinguished statewide leadership programs, on Wednesday announced its Kansas Emerging Leaders (KEL) Class of 2024.

Brittany Inskeep of Joe McGuire Insurance in Hutchinson is part of the class.

KEL is a statewide program designed to enhance and motivate young leaders from various Kansas communities. Each year, Kansans in their 20s and 30s are nominated to apply for the program.

Developed in 2019 based on feedback from the nearly 1,600 Leadership Kansas alumni, LK created KEL to give outstanding young leaders a format to learn more about Kansas and about the opportunities within the state for professional growth.

LK Executive Director Aaron Miller said the 20 individuals selected to participate in the 2024 program reflect Kansas's demographics and geography as well as the state's make up of private and public sectors.

"We are excited to help them begin their journey of leadership and discovery. Upon completion of the program, these young professionals will be better equipped to shoulder important leadership responsibilities in their individual careers and for their respective communities because of their experience and training through Kansas Emerging Leaders," Miller said.

The class will learn about a myriad of topics important to Kansans through five monthly sessions, including:

Learn about Kansas’ business, social, educational, and government issues of our past, how they impact us today, and how they will shape our future.

Build a network of fellow Kansans who are committed to our state’s success.

Meet mentors and connect with Kansas leaders.

Create a pipeline of potential future Leadership Kansas program participants.

The class will visit Dodge City, Hays, KC Metro, Manhattan, Topeka, and Wichita.

To qualify for the program, nominees must work or live in Kansas, be an outstanding leader, who have been involved in campus or community programs and express an interest to stay in Kansas and become more involved.

School district officials say the survey of district households will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges, and long-term facility needs.

“This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from a cross-section of our patrons their opinions about our performance, and what our priorities should be for the future,” says Dr. Dawn Johnson, superintendent. “We’ll hear from all geographic parts of the district, people of all different ages, and everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The survey was designed by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm that has worked with school districts across the Midwest.

The calls will be completed by Kansas City-based Market Research Associates, a firm that uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Calling starts on Friday, April 5th&nbsp;and will last for two weeks. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the district’s website starting April 15th.

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete, and the district is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.

“We are very fortunate to live and serve in a community that values our schools,”&nbsp;Johnson says. “If you get called for the survey, please answer and give your honest feedback.”

USD 308 to conduct phone survey starting next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the end of Kansas Cold Weather Rule on April 1, requests for funds are coming in faster than ever to the Hutchinson Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut has become a one stop headquarters for year-round aid and is a location for other organizations. 

Currently, VITA is in the final stages of helping seniors and low income get taxes filed through volunteer help at their building. Most weekdays the Salvation Army also hosts Friendship Meals for seniors; provides headquarters for the Reno County Food Bank; furnishes cooling fans in the summer, blankets and clothing throughout the year, helps disabled and others in need manage assistance funds along with a variety of other year-round aid.

2023 Christmas fund raising came in about $20,000 short of the previous year, which limits year round assistance. As of mid-March the Salvation Army was down about $23,000 for the fiscal year that started last October.

James says the past two years have been challenging and difficult with 2023 coming up short by $40,000 compared with 2021 and 2022. This year they are even further behind where they need to be to help those who come to their building. 

"Growing need, limited resources, pretty well sums up our current situation," said James. United Way of Reno County support continues to be a critical asset to allowing the Salvation Army to help more people.

Along with monetary donations, James says there's a list of personal care items needed to serve an increasing number of requests from those who are homeless. Those who can help boost the supply can drop supplies by the Salvation Army office any weekday between 8 a.m and 5 p.m.

Needed items include bars of soap, small bottles of laundry detergent, toilet paper, diapers sizes 3 through 6, wipes, combs and hairbrushes, deodorant for men and women, shampoo and conditioner.

The National Wheat Yield Contest is organized by the National Wheat Foundation. The 2024 categories include irrigated winter wheat, dryland winter wheat, irrigated spring wheat and dryland spring wheat. The contest will name 26 national winners, including state winners. All national winners will receive a trip to the 2025 Commodity Classic to be held March 2-4, 2025, in Denver.

Contest fields must be at least five continuous acres planted with professionally produced, certified, branded and newly purchased wheat seed. The field must be verified by a third-party supervisor during harvest of the contest field. Entries cost $100, with vouchers available from contest sponsors.&nbsp;

Contest rules also require growers to retain a 10-pound sample of grain from their entry, which will be milled, baked and evaluated for quality if the entry places nationally. For each class, the three highest ranking samples for quality will be recognized and awarded an additional $250.&nbsp;

In last year’s contest, William Noll of Winchester had the top yields for both dryland and irrigated winter wheat categories. His dryland entry of AgriMaxx 516 soft red winter wheat yielded 103.99 bushels per acre, while his irrigated entry of AgriMaxx 505 soft red winter wheat yielded 121.1 bushels per acre. Second prize in the state’s dryland winter wheat category was awarded to Matt Grabbe of Hays with a sample of WestBred WB4792 that yielded 79.18 bushels per acre, the same variety with which he won third place in the previous year’s contest.&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY —Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Watson Kevin Bradford, 51, died Wednesday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 He was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday afternoon. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Mr. Bradford was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Bradford was serving a life sentence, for convictions of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and forgery committed in Leavenworth County, Kansas.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Plans being made for new downtown park

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Wednesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by Harry&nbsp;Neufeldt, 92, Inman, was westbound on Arapaho Road&nbsp; and failed to stop at the stop sign at Kansas 61 Highway.

The pickup struck a northbound 2020 Kia Soul driven by Aung Thiha&nbsp;Kyaw, 31, Salina. After impact the pickup&nbsp;came to rest in the roadway and the Kia came to rest in the median.

&nbsp;Neufeldt was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center where he died.&nbsp; EMS transported Kyaw to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Newfeldt was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

MCPHERSON COUNTY — The Kansas Highway Patrol and McPherson County Sheriff's Office are reporting that K-61 was closed for around two hours Wednesday morning at Arapaho Road in McPherson County due to an injury accident.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, troopers Malo, Voss, Fraser, and Rust are actively investigating this two-vehicle crash. Eagle Med is transporting one person to Wesley Hospital in Wichita.

The road was reopened just prior to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"The City has requested that we implement a few things before we open up to the public again," Davis said. "Changing ownership always comes with some new inspections and new regulations. So, there are a couple of things I have to get nailed down in the building. Nothing major, and only things that will make the place overall a safer building for everyone."

The first official day for the re-opening will be next Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. 

"Don't expect to see major changes," Davis added. "Rather, it will be your regular ol' Taco Hut, just with a few new people slinging the tacos."

Davis said they are actively hiring for both days and evenings. Pay starts at $12/hr, but will consider higher pay for qualified candidates. Looking for one full time person and several part timers. People with previous Taco Hut experience are also very welcome.&nbsp;

Taco Hut transition delays reopening

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast said Tuesday that the city has made an offer to a candidate for the permanent City Manager position.

"Word is currently, we have a candidate we've made an offer to, contigent upon an intensive background check," Fast said. "We expect that to come back any day. If that comes back clear, we will probably approve a contract for this individual on the April 16 agenda."

It will still be a few more weeks before the new hire can get to Hutch.

"We've had some discussions on a transitional period, to make sure they are set up for success," Fast said. "I think he'll start the first part of June. Mary Grace, I think we'll keep her as long as she'll stay around and as long as the new city manager would want her to stay around."

The budget process for 2025 is already beginning to take shape, as the city will need to approve a budget in August.

"This is up to him," Fast said. "We, as a council, we hire the city manager. Everything below that, the city manager takes care of."

Compensation for the new hire will come out when the contract is approved by the council.

"It's a fast-moving musical farce," said Cris Corey, who plays Luigi Gaudi in the production. "It's really over the top. It's fun. It's a riot. It's been a real joy to be a part of this cast and the show itself.

Another unique feature of the show is that the set dressing will use periaktos. These triangular prisms made of wood are three-sided set backgrounds that will be moved and positioned by the actors during the course of the show. The ten periaktos were constructed by John Harding and painted by Jamie Goble.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

"And we just want to basically give back to our customers and just offer a free or complimentary event for people to come out and enjoy and see what all of the shopping and all of the stores and all of the businesses in Pleasantview and see what they are all about."

The free pancake feed will start off the celebration behind Stutzman's Greenhouse from 7:30-10:30 a.m.&nbsp;Glenn's Bulk Food Shoppe and Gospel Book Store will hand out one-day coupons at the feed.&nbsp;

Card shower for USD 308 retirees this month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Underground Salt Museum announced the promotion of several key members of their staff on Tuesday.

Rachel Terry will now serve as Director of Strataca.

With over ten years of management expertise, Rachel has been instrumental in driving Strataca's growth through various marketing initiatives, fundraising activities, and innovative business strategies. This progression highlights Strataca's commitment to excellence and forward-thinking approach in creating a rewarding environment for both visitors and staff.

Rachel is dedicated to leading with passion and innovation, fostering a positive work culture, and guiding the team towards new accomplishments with a strategic approach and fresh viewpoints.

Chrisi Reif-Fuhrman&nbsp;has been appointed to the Operations and Education Manager. With an impressive 14-year tenure at Strataca, she has shown outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication to our mission. Bringing over 30 years of experience in the education field, Chrisi will play a crucial role in enhancing and expanding our education programs.

Under Chrisi's guidance, we are confident that our education initiatives will reach new heights. Her passion for fostering learning and development is truly inspiring, and we are excited to see the innovative ideas and strategies she will bring to the table.

Amber Williams has been promoted to the role of Office and Marketing Manager. Amber has achieved numerous milestones during her time at Strataca. In her new role, she will spearhead our marketing initiatives while supporting office and store development.

Amber's dedication and hard work have been truly inspiring to everyone at Strataca. Her creative vision and exceptional organizational skills make her the perfect fit for this position. We have no doubt that she will excel in her new role and continue to bring fresh ideas to our team.

Derrick Pohl will now serve as Project and Maintenance Manager. Derrick's dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. With his exceptional leadership skills and strong attention to detail, we are confident that he will excel in his new role. As Project and Maintenance Manager, Derrick will play a vital role in overseeing various projects and ensuring that our facilities are well-maintained to the highest standards. We look forward to seeing him thrive in this new position and continue to contribute to the success of our team.

Jacob Reed will transition into the role of Special Projects and Events Supervisor. With more than 3 years at Strataca, Jacob has significantly influenced our Scouting Program and developed the upcoming tour "The Lantern Tour," scheduled for launch this May. His ability to think outside the box has been instrumental in the success of our programs.

As we look forward to the launch of "The Lantern Tour" this May, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jacob on his new role. His dedication, hard work, and creativity inspire us all, and we are grateful to have him as part of the Strataca family.

Strataca announces key promotions

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's not too late to register to be an artist vendor at the 2024 Hutchinson Art Fair, but it's time to do so, if you have any interest. 

The Art Fair is Saturday, May 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. 

The Hutchinson Art Association will be featuring a variety of artist booths, live music, kids swag bags and more. Artist vendors have a chance to win from the many cash prizes available at the event and it is a great opportunity for them to meet collectors and buyers from all across Kansas.

There are under 10 spots left, so if you're interested in being an artist vendor yet and haven't registered, now is the time.

🎥 Champs return home

PARTRIDGE, Kan. — According to Reno County Emergency Management, a fire at a home in Partridge Tuesday morning destroyed the building.

Fire Administrator Travis Vogt said in a social media post that crews were called out just after 4 a.m. to 3 North Reno Street in Partridge. When crews from Fire Districts 4, 3 and 8 arrived, they found a working fire in the northeast part of the home. The fire extended into the attic space and the strong north winds caused it to spread too quickly to be attacked from the inside.

The City of Partridge does not have hydrants or a water supply, so water had to be hauled to the scene. Tender trucks from Fire Districts 6 and 9 and Pretty Prairie were called in. In all, seven 3000 gallon tenders were used to supply water to the scene.

Due to hoarding conditions in the home and the collapse of the home's roof, all crews could do once the fire was out is call in an excavator from Miller Earthworks to level the home.&nbsp;

The Reno County Sheriff's Office and the Reno County Fire Administrator investigated to determine a cause of the fire. Three occupants were in the home at the time of the fire and got out safely thanks to working smoke detectors. The fire is being classified as accidental from careless smoking.

Tuesday fire in Partridge displaces three

STERLING, Kan. — KMW Ltd, a leading manufacturer of loaders, backhoes, and attachments, is pleased to announce that they are growing. Small lawn and garden loaders were added in 1968, an early indication of what the future KMW would become. Under the leadership of the current CEO, Wayne Buchberger, who took over KMW during the pandemic in 2020, there has been strategic acceleration of our growth. In this period KMW has been expanding its product lines and customer base. KMW and its team currently produce loader models ranging from 45-380 hp, a solid line of backhoes, and multiple loader attachments across three locations. The purchase of KMW by Agrostroj Pelhřimov in July of 2021 was pivotal with their strong support of KMW’s growth and team here in the USA. Sterling loader and backhoe manufacturer to expand

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Brad Shores with engineering consultant JEO spoke to the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday on the intersection at 30th and Halstead.

"We really need that to be what is called split-phase," Shores said. "Basically, all of east has to go, right, through and left, then all of westbound has to go right, through and left. We cannot have the left turns happening at the same time. It's not safe because of the way the intersection is set up today."

 With the new pole going up this week and the new controls on order, once those are here, there will be a change in that light.

"Tomorrow, you're not going to see the change and the length increase," Clements said. "The next three to 12 weeks, once we get the parts and get that installed, that's when, all of a sudden, people are going to forget this conversation and it's going to be, why are we waiting longer at 30th and Halstead now?"

For council member Stacy Goss, getting this intersection fixed is really important.

"I almost died at that intersection when I was 15," Goss said. "I was actually in exactly what you described, but then, once you get hit, we T-boned the light post, which was metal. It still is metal. I was life flighted to Wichita."

The council gave consensus that they want to see the split-phase light work for a while before making decisions on whether to repaint between there and K-61 into three lanes, or expand to five lanes, or keep it the same.&nbsp;

30th and Halstead light will be longer

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/" target="_blank">K-State 105</a>&nbsp;is partnering with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.startuphutch.com/" target="_blank">StartUp Hutch</a>&nbsp;to expand the entrepreneurial ecosystem and foster additional economic growth in Hutchinson and the Reno County region.

The K-State 105 partnership will help expand entrepreneurial services in Reno County by adding an Entrepreneur Navigator, or E-Navigator, to StartUp Hutch.

The E-Navigator will be a pilot program that connects and convenes local entrepreneurs, fosters collaborations and supports new ventures in Reno County.

"We truly believe that all communities can experience economic growth through strategies that start at the local level, and our new K-State 105 partnership with StartUp Hutch aims to do just that by taking an innovative approach with the local entrepreneurship program," said Jessica Gnad, K-State 105 director. "Through K-State 105, we are supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses across all 105 counties, and it's exciting to help this program expand in Reno County."

Through the partnership, StartUp Hutch will expand its services by hiring an additional staff member to help continue coordinating and executing entrepreneurship programs in the community.

"Taking an ecosystem approach creates more connections between existing service providers and also between existing and emerging entrepreneurs," said Jackson Swearer, executive director of StartUp Hutch. "This creates a more resilient system of entrepreneurship support and more points of entry into that system, expanding opportunities for more residents to enter entrepreneurship, which in turn creates more jobs and improved quality of life in communities."

Other partners involved include NetWork Kansas, Hutchinson Community College and K-State Research and Extension.

StartUp Hutch is part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.networkkansas.com/" target="_blank">NetWork Kansas</a>&nbsp;E-Community Program, short for Entrepreneurship Community, which is an initiative that involves 73 locations across the state that support entrepreneurial work. NetWork Kansas will monitor the program expansion at StartUp Hutch with the goal of replicating the program at other E-Community locations across the state.
