MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Campaign School will hold its comprehensive two-day training at the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce on April 16-17. It also will offer seven mini sessions around the state beginning from March to September. 

The sessions are for current office holders, future candidates, campaign managers and volunteer leaders on how to mount a successful campaign.“Putting your name on the ballot for any public office is the first step of many before raising your hand and swearing your oath of office,” KFB’s Director of Political Affairs Brenden Wirth says. “KFB’s Campaign School can help you take crucial steps to give you a winning advantage on Election Day. This program has been used across the nation with candidates winning more than 80 percent of their races.”

This nonpartisan, unbiased program offers in-depth instruction from national, state and local political experts on topics like strategy, tactics, selecting issues, budgeting, fundraising and identifying voters. KFB Campaign School was designed to give potential candidates a solid foundation as they seek elected office. It also offers incumbents an opportunity to enhance their campaign skills.

The two-day KFB Campaign School is limited to 20 participants. Farm Bureau members of Kansas can attend for $300 and nonmembers can join for $350.

Mini sessions are condensed opportunities to learn the fundamentals of campaign management skills and cost $60 for KFB members and $85 for nonmembers. Up to 20 participants can take part in each session. They will be offered on the following dates and locations:

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Recreation Commission announces the promotion of two staff members to start the New Year.

Kelsey Loutensock was promoted to Director of Sports &amp; Aquatics on Jan. 1. Loutensock started at Hutch Rec as the Aquatics and Special Events Manager on April 1, 2024 with past parks and recreation experience at Hesston Recreation, where she was the Assistant Recreation Director/Aquatics Director. Loutensock attended both Hesston College and Tabor College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in sports management.

In her new role at Hutch Rec, Loutensock is responsible for the sports operations and programs. She will continue to manage Hutch Rec Race Series events and oversee the daily operations at the seasonal Salt City Splash Aquatic Center.

Denice Gilliland was promoted to Director of Community Initiatives on Jan. 1. Gilliland started at Hutch Rec as the Neighborhood Development Manager on June 1, 2023. Prior to Hutch Rec, Gilliland worked at the United Way of Reno County and has a diverse background in the business and nonprofit sector. She is a Hutchinson native and a graduate of Bethany College, where she majored in secondary education and political science.

In her new role at Hutch Rec, Gilliland is responsible for the planning and development of community festivals and various initiatives. She will continue to oversee the operations of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative and the neighborhood development program.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas is accepting applications for its 2025 session. The event is set to be held Sunday, June 1, through Saturday, June 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall.

Traditionally, Kansas Boys State has been for individuals who will complete their junior year of high&nbsp;school in the spring just prior to the start of each session. However, the ALBSK program will again expand the pool of applicants for this year’s session to also include those who will complete their sophomore year of high school this spring.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving&nbsp;experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills&nbsp;civic responsibility to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The cost to attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $375; however, in many instances, sponsors pay&nbsp;the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying $50. Those wishing to attend the 2025 session should visit <a href="http://ksbstate.org">ksbstate.org</a> to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2025 program is Wednesday, April 30; applications are accepted after that date, but on a space-available basis. In addition, those who register by Friday, Jan. 31, will receive a $50 early-bird discount.

Boys State applications open

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Annette VanBruggen with Mary Magdalene House told Hutch Post that their new chapel is available for people who may want to use it for their special occasion.

"The chapel is officially usable," VanBruggen said. "We've still got some parking lot stuff to do but pretty much it's done. We're booking weddings and and things like that for the for the spring and fall. Our goal is to not be a wedding venue, our goal is to still be a mission and still support our community, but use the chapel as a means to bring in some income."

Mary Magdalene House will be holding an event to allow people to see how the chapel might fit into their plans for themselves.

"We're gonna have a pop in and see the new chapel," VanBruggen said. "We've got a few vendors for like cake people and marriage planners and a few of those kind of people that are going to be there set up and we'll have it the space set up, so you can kind of see what it looks like. The Mary Magdalene house is also part of your rental if you decide to use it for an event venue so we're gonna have all that kind of organized so you can see what that would look like if you chose to to get married or use the Mary Magdalene Chapel for your special event."

The pop in event will be Sunday, Jan. 26 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mary Magdalene House at 7201 East 4th east of Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The leadership of Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, Sunshine Meadows in Buhler and Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson all want to make sure that those who need to discuss long-term care arrangements with their families don't put it off. It's much easier to make decisions ahead, because time gives you options, being in a hurry leaves you none.

"We see that frequently where one spouse has become the caregiver and the support for the other spouse, and sometimes, you know, it takes both of them to kind of be one person, and we see that quite a bit," said Mark Mains with Wesley Towers. "When you start to notice that, and holidays are a good time to notice that, it's a good idea to get a hold of one of us and start talking about what options are there."

New facilities like the Selah Memory Care Center at Sunshine Meadows can help when one spouse maybe is farther along the deterioration path than the other one is.

"Much of the time what we see is that when they do make a move and have one of them move into the facility or both move in the facility, how much pressure is then alleviated from the one that's caregiving," said Nathan Spencer with Sunshine Meadows. "It's like they get their life back, and they're thinking that they're not doing right by their spouse or loved one, but reality is when they actually make that move, there's such freedom that's created for them, and then they get to focus on the relationship and not the caregiving."

Dawn Veh with Mennonite Friendship Communities told her story.

"I, in fact, just moved my mom, or she came to our campus,"&nbsp; Veh said. "Part of the attraction was the different levels of care that are available to her in this location, and it's good to have her close by. We were able to have a family Christmas gathering at the community and grandkids have been able to stop in great grandkids to see her while they were in town, so it's important to have them near family."

Have difficult conversations about long-term care

By the time this column is posted, the first significant winter weather system of 2025 will have passed. For our area, the weather experts are all forecasting periods of ice, strong winds, extreme cold and heavy snow. 

The winter storm watch notifications have been constant on my phone. Road crews have already started treating the roads and people have been making their way to the grocery store to stock up. 

The term “French Toast Warning” is being used to describe this incoming weather event, which is basically suggesting people get to the store and stock up on all of the essentials for French toast including eggs, milk and bread.

I’m an early prepper, so I got all of my ingredients before the masses did. Early prepping is something we have to do during this time of the year, because we aren't just preparing our household for the weather; we are having to prepare the farm for the weather as well.

Machines need to be winterized, fuel tanks need to be filled, equipment needs stored. 

Since there's a chance of losing power with this storm, the generator is at the ready, propane tanks are topped off, flashlights and lanterns are charged and batteries are tested. The cabinet doors under the sinks have been opened and water jugs are filled.

With or without power, the animals still need cared for. Straw bales are moved and spread to provide warm bedding for the animals. Hay bales are strategically placed for future feedings. Ice breaking tools are brought out, and the heavy-duty winter choring clothes are hanging near the back door.

A pile of old towels are at the ready for use on floors to combat wet and muddy boots or to wrap up and dry off tiny newborn lambs since we are currently in the middle of lambing.

It’s my hope that our storm prepping is not needed, but after an incredibly brutal January in 2024 that kept the kids home more than they were at school, roads continually drifted shut, and farmers and ranchers working around the clock to care for their livestock, it’s wise to be ready.

Even if this anticipated first winter storm of 2025 ends up being all that is described, maybe, just maybe, we’ll be able to use the ingredients from our pre-winter weather grocery run and get to enjoy some warm French toast in between feeding, watering and caring for our livestock during this first winter storm of 2025.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has reopened these highways after earlier closures caused by low visibility, impassable conditions and extreme winter weather.

Travelers are still encouraged to exercise caution, as residual snow and ice may affect road conditions in these areas.

KDOT reopens roads Tuesday

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; Governor Laura Kelly announced on Monday that Kansas has received a 2024 Deal of the Year Impact Award from Business Facilities magazine in the Building Supply Manufacturing category. The award recognizes the planned commissioning of a new $300 million shingle plant in Newton by GAF, a Standards Industries company and North America’s largest manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing products.

“This significant investment from GAF in Newton was essential not only for growing the economy in Kansas, but also for expanding their portfolio to meet the needs of their customers,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The recognition and award are proof of our state’s ability to provide companies with a resourceful business environment and a prosperous future in Kansas.”

Putting more than a century of shingle manufacturing expertise to work, GAF will build a world-class shingle manufacturing facility in Newton. The facility will bring more than 130 new manufacturing jobs spanning management, engineering, and operations to the area, with a focus on continuous process manufacturing. &nbsp;

“In the last five years, Kansas has become a nationwide leader in economic growth, receiving several accolades that attest to the transformative efforts happening here in our state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “These awards and recognitions go beyond our capacity to land investments, they speak to our ability to provide companies with a reliable workforce, good-quality and affordable housing, quality places and communities, and so much more.”

Plans to build the new shingle plant were announced in 2024 with production anticipated to begin in 2027 and reach full production capacity by mid-2029. The company has already begun hiring key leadership roles for the new manufacturing facility, with more positions opening beginning in spring 2025.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson used a lot of resources to get the streets into passable condition both during and following the weekend storm.

"To date, we've used around 10,000 gallons of brine and about a thousand tons of salt for direct application onto the roads," said Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas said Monday. "A lot of resources just on the material side, but also on the personnel side, a lot of hours, so about 520 hours or so."

City employees have been working around the clock, too with about 20 employees plowing 12 hours on, 12 hours off for the duration of the storm.

"I was talking with several staff late into the evening Sunday night and part of why they were in good spirits, is several have mentioned that this time last year or during our last major snow event, it seemed like maybe 10 percent of the comments were positive and then 90 percent were just negative," Villegas said. "Well, they're saying now it's the exact opposite where it's like 90 percent positive and then 10 percent negative. So the staff feel that positivity and that helps keep them going."

Part of what's important is that the city has done its best to let the public know in advance of the storm what the plan is and then they have gone out to execute that plan.

City staff and resources effective in storm recovery

Monday January 6, the Salvation Army's services will be closed, but the building will be open in case people need a warm place to go.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the spring of 2024, Reno County, along with the City of Hutchinson and City of South Hutchinson began a countywide housing study with RDG Planning &amp; Design. 

According to agenda documents, after several months of surveys and community meetings, RDG is now ready to present study findings to the three governing bodies that assisted in the cost for the study. Amy Haase with RDG will give the presentation on Wednesday.

Preserve and protect existing housing by improving the quality of rental stock and reducing the number of homes that must be demolished annually.

Leverage assets by identifying new funding sources for partner agencies and expand existing housing initiatives.

Increase production of housing oriented to those 55+ to free up existing housing for young families and first time home buyers, while creating the environment that supports our aging population.

Strategically reinvest in neighborhoods to stabilize home values by encouraging private market reinvestment, building community pride and making rehabilitation and new construction financially feasible in all neighborhoods and communities.

Invest for success to attract young workers and families, support home value stabilization, educate renters and first time home buyers.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

Housing study to be presented Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — State Rep. Paul Waggoner is confident that the Republican majority in the Kansas Statehouse is stronger in 2025 than it was last session.

"I think arguably we have a lot better chance here in 25 and we had good success, I think in 23 and 24," Waggoner said. "Our majorities are stronger. Some of the people who had personal agendas aren't there in Topeka going forward. The legislature, frankly, has been dealt by the voters, a much stronger hand in dealing with the governor this year."

Given the government efficiency that both President-elect Donald Trump and Republican leadership in the Kansas Statehouse say they want to see, it's logical to expect some attempts at serious budget restructuring in the coming year.

"Topeka does have a spending problem," Waggoner said. "I am totally pumped just simply because it would take, if you had a conservative governor, Republican governor, you know, yeah, you would have hope that, that because the agencies make the request through the governor's office, but where that is not the case, the legislature really needs to stand up, if you're going to have any control over the budget."

Republican legislative leadership is attempting to write their own version of the state budget to counter the traditional method of taking the budget cues from the governor's office.

"The first thing on the table is going to regard property tax relief, which again, the state only has a certain amount that we really deal with. It's just 20 mills for schools," Waggoner said. "We were just two or three votes from overriding governor Kelly's vetoes on this topic last year. But I expect to see a property tax relief package, which would cut that 20 mills, but then refill the money from just general fund revenue so that schools are held neutral, but that the taxpayers would get some property tax relief."

The Governor's State of the State speech, where she outlines many of her policy and budget priorities, is scheduled for Jan. 15.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gas prices in Kansas are solid as we enter 2025.

"We have lots of stability," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We are currently almost 40 cents less than the national average, which is $3.06 right now. That puts Kansas at fourth lowest in the nation."

There don't seem to be any trends right now that look like there would be any kind of big jumps in prices at the pump and the weekend winter weather reduces demand in the short term as folks stay home to stay safe.

"We really haven't seen any kind of geopolitical issues or any kind of interruption to the petroleum supply that would lead to any kind of jump in prices," Steward said. "Right now we're looking at a fairly typical trend. We're getting into the lower demand period for driving as we head into winter, and right now that's kind of what it looks like."

Traditionally, as demand remains low during winter months and winter blend gasoline is less expensive to refine, that puts downward pressure on prices at the pump.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation is planning to host its twenty-fourth Kansas Mission of Mercy free dental clinic at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Meadowlark Building in Hutchinson, KS on January 17-18, 2025, with clinic doors opening at 5:30 a.m. both days. Local dentists Drs. Todd Esau and Jared Dye have volunteered to chair the 2025 event.

Support for this project comes entirely from donations and grants and uses no state or federal funding. Local coordinators are making contacts within the community to gain monetary and in-kind support for the project, as well as recruiting the hundreds of community volunteers necessary to make the Kansas Mission of Mercy possible. This project will cost nearly $170,000 but will leave behind nearly $1M of donated dental care in return.

There are no appointments or reservations, and patients will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Treatment options include cleanings, fillings, extractions, and dental hygiene education.

The clinic will include an estimated 100 dental chairs and it is expected that nearly 1,000 volunteers, consisting of dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, medical personnel, and community volunteers will donate their talents to treat patients.

There are no appointments or reservations, and treatment options include fillings, extractions, and cleanings. However, parents can go online and schedule an appointment time for their children ages 13 and under. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Free dental event in Hutch Jan. 17-18

PRATT COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by Benjamin R.&nbsp;Shotgunn, 43, Dodge City, was westbound on U.S. 54 just east of SW 90th Avenue in Cullison.

The driver lost control in the snow and ice and struck the trailer of of an eastbound 2021 Freightliner semi driven by Tyrell&nbsp;Mosley, 37, Morrow, Georgia.

EMS transported a passenger in the Toyota Antonio V. Luna, 35, Dodge City, to Pratt Regional Medical Center. The drivers were not injured. Luna was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man injured after crash on the snow into semi trailer

The Kansas Department of Transportation advises all motorists to avoid non-emergency travel, especially in northeast and north central Kansas, as dangerous blizzard conditions persist.

All state highways in Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Doniphan, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Atchison, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Douglas, Johnson, Lyon, Osage, Jewell, Republic, Washington, Mitchell, Cloud, Clay, Lincoln, Ottawa, Ellsworth, Saline, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, McPherson, Marion and Chases counties are closed, including I-70. Reno County and Harvey County state highways are also closed as of 5 p.m. Sunday, as are highways in Butler County.

Motorists currently traveling in affected areas are advised to adjust travel plans immediately.

“This is a major, statewide winter weather event,” Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said. “We appreciate the cooperation of the public in staying off the roads so our crews can focus on reopening routes as quickly and as safely as possible. KDOT is out in force working diligently in these challenging conditions.”

KDOT crews are working to reopen roads, with priority given to major routes. Progress will depend on weather conditions.

If you are currently stranded, call *47 for Kansas Highway Patrol Dispatch and provide your location. KDOT encourages motorists to follow the guidance of emergency personnel and call for assistance to determine the best course of action.

KDOT also advises motorists who must travel to have emergency kits on hand with clothes, blankets, food, water and other supplies.

No non-emergency travel, KDOT highways closed in north-central and northeast Kansas

Matt started his radio career at KJCK-FM in Junction City in 2003 as on-air talent and later, music director.

In 2009 Matt joined Hull Broadcasting in Great Bend where he had the opportunity to be exposed to every facet of the business. From traffic logs and programming, to engineering, and later Operations Manager and Digital Sales Manager for Eagle Communications.

He was also Program Director for KBGL-FM from 2012 until 2021 when he accepted the position of General Manager for Eagle Communications in Great Bend. In his first year of station management, Matt and his sales team hit all but one of their monthly quotas. In 2025, Matt will be joining the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors.

Matt sees himself as a problem solver. He enjoys helping clients and staff members solve their problems, and says, “There is no shortage of problems out there.” He looks back with pride on some successful cases, such as the plumber who showed up at the office as a one-man operation with a single truck who now runs a large fleet with storefronts in multiple communities–proof of the power of radio and a strategic advertising campaigns.

Matt is also passionate about enriching the next generation of media professionals. He works hard to enable young people with opportunities to grow and succeed in the broadcast industry.

Outside the office, Matt is looking forward to his wedding with his fiancé Katie in October, and a proud father his two children, Lucas and Emma.

Matt will continue his leadership role in the Hutchinson Market and will begin meetings with the individual market teams in Kansas over the next few weeks.

Attendees are in for a day of insightful discussions and impactful presentations on combating human trafficking. Scheduled speakers are experts in the field and will provide valuable insights on how professionals can create a paradigm shift in addressing this critical issue.

Heidi Olson, RN, MSN, CPN, SANE-P is a Certified Pediatric Nurse and Certified Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Heidi has a wide range of experience in pediatric and forensic nursing and has taught as an adjunct clinical instructor for the University of Missouri at Kansas City and the University of St. Mary’s.

Heidi previously managed the SANE Program at a children’s hospital where she performed/reviewed over 1,500 pediatric forensic exams, many of them trafficking cases, communicated with law enforcement, child protective services, and a large multidisciplinary team, as well as educated hundreds of staff members on relevant topics regarding sexual violence. Heidi also serves as an expert witness for the prosecution during trials for victims of sexual assault.

In 2019, Heidi implemented an evidence-based screening process in the Emergency Department, which has resulted in hundreds of vulnerable children being identified as victims of exploitation. Heidi started and led the human trafficking work group at a children’s hospital, presents with the Anti Internet Child Exploitation Team (a Canadian non-profit), and organized Empower KC, a community event to raise awareness about sexual exploitation in Kansas City. Heidi has testified in favor of bills that have been passed into law on the state level and most recently, Heidi testified at a briefing on Capitol Hill about protecting children online.

Continuing ed for nurses in McPherson next month

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas Farm Bureau is continuing in 2025 its recognition for “Sesquicentennial Farms” in conjunction with its annual “Century Farm” program. 

The Century Farm program honors Farm Bureau members who own farms of at least 80 acres within the same family for 100 years or more. The Sesquicentennial Farm recognition goes to farms in the same family for at least 150 years.

“Kansas farmers and ranchers have a lot to be proud of,” Joe Newland, Kansas Farm Bureau president, says. “One thing we take pride in is our value in the traditions and strong family ties through generations of rural living. Kansas Farm Bureau is honored to celebrate those through the Century Farm and Sesquicentennial Farms programs.”

The deadline for consideration to be part of the 2025 programs is May 15. 

Kansas Farm Bureau has recognized 3,210 Century Farms and 132 Sesquicentennial Farms since their inception.

KFB looking for Sesquicentennial Farms

HARVEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. on Saturday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Jeep Wrangler driven by Aden&nbsp;Forkner,&nbsp; 20, Burleson, Texas, was northbound on Interstate 135 near Kansas 196.

The Jeep slid off the icy road. The vehicle struck a&nbsp;&nbsp;guardrail and then overturned in the southbound lanes of the Interstate.

EMS transported Forkner to Wesley Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after Jeep slides on the ice, overturns

RENO COUNTY —Four people were injured in an accident just after 9 a.m. Saturday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by Todd M&nbsp;Musselman, 53, Plano, Texas was southbound on Kansas 14 just south of Wilson Road.

The driver lost control due to slick road conditions. The pickup crossed the centerline, traveled off the road to the left , struck a guardrail and rolled onto its top.&nbsp;

EMS transported Musselman and three adult passengers from Texas to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

  Total snow accumulations are expected between 2 and 6 inches for areas south of US-50, and between 6 and 14 inches for areas along and north of  US-50, with winds gusting as high as 50 mph.

Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice.

  Travel could be nearly impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree  branches.
