Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1800 block of North Plum on the east side.

In 1952, a group of insightful Hutchinson business men and women applied for (and were given by the federal government) a license to start the first TV station in Kansas.

Led by John P. Harris, who owned the Hutchinson News, and Bess Rickard, who owned KWBW radio, they constructed the KTVH-TV studio at 1800 N. Plum. The first photo shows the original KTVH building (from Roger Cornish).

The station went on the air July 1, 1953. One of the first staff announcers was Dick Cornish, father of Channel 12 announcer Roger, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 66. The second photo shows the interior news desk and camera.

In those days, staff was small and one person did a lot. Like Russell "Ernie" Dade, who played many roles. The third photo shows a contact sheet with many of the roles and commercials he did.

His most famous role was "Sammy Scarecrow," a children's show that ran four years starting in 1954. The fourth photo shows "Sammy" in character.

The fifth photo shows the Sammy Scarecrow club membership card.

In 1983, the station was sold to Ross Beach and Bob Schmidt, who changed the call letters to KWCH-TV and the main broadcasting was done from Wichita. The sixth photo shows the 1800 N. Plum facility today, now owned by Hutchinson Community College and used for HutchCC media productions.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As respiratory season is upon us, we want to inform you of an increase in pertussis cases in the US this year so far. 

 Preliminary data from the CDC shows that there are five times as many cases this year (about 23,500) so far when compared to the same time in 2023. These numbers are higher than what was seen in 2019 before the pandemic and we have seen a few cases here in Reno County. 

 TDaP is a routine vaccine that includes Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis and is recommended to receive it every 10 years.  If you are not up to date, please contact your health care provider, pharmacy or the Reno County Health Department for a booster.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA has some great programs for you to get a jump on fitness as we head into the holiday season.

"We are waiving the joiner fee, which is for most memberships, generally $50 for adult and family, $25 for youth, and that will be waived through Nov. 26," said David Foster with the Hutchinson Y. "Just in time to eat a lot of turkey on Thanksgiving Day and then come to the Y and work it all off."

There's also a program for current members to work on, as well.

"We're just kind of getting everybody ready for the holidays," Foster said. "We've got a member challenge called healthy through the holidays. You can sign up anytime and it starts Nov. 28 and goes to Jan. 1. It's only $15 and you can choose two focus areas. One, you could maintain or lose. You'll weigh in with our fitness staff by Thanksgiving Day and then weigh in again on New Year's Day. If you've maintained or lost weight, you will get a t-shirt. The second challenge option is called get fit. All you need to do, I say all, it's a little challenging, is attend 12 group exercise classes, land or water between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. The instructor will sign off on your attendance and you'll earn a shirt for that, as well."

Memberships are still going strong at the YMCA in Hutchinson.

"We're still hovering right at 5,000 total members at our location here in Hutch," Foster said. "That grows a little bit month over month, and the same with our monthly and ongoing programs too. It's a lot of momentum right now at the Y and staff are doing a great job offering programs and services that are serving our community at a high level."

YMCA with ongoing programs to build members

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Democratic Rep. Jason Probst is asking for the public's assistance in knowing the best way forward after the November election, where not only did he lose his race in the 102nd District, but results in Kansas and nationally gave more political influence generally to Republicans.

"I feel like it's hard sometimes in state government and in political campaigns to get reliable or good information out to the public," Probst said. "I think we try it a lot of different ways, but I think people get it in so many different ways now that sometimes the information is fractured or segmented. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how people get that information, and the other thing I'm trying to do is figure out what information is valuable to them and what would help them be more engaged in local government."

Probst has written the questions for <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdo6fTLlzAik0VodGwZohfFITJ8bXelDBkHpltN-EeVXA9Zzg/viewform">a survey</a> that he hopes a lot of Kansans will respond to.

"It's probably going to be less than five minutes to fill out," Probst said.&nbsp; "I actually didn't count the questions either, but I think it's about 20 questions or so."

If you are engaged with state government, these questions will be simple to answer. If not, he wants to know why not.&nbsp;

"What I'm trying to do is get this out to a broad cross-section of people in a lot of different areas of life to make sure that we're getting a pretty good representative sample of what's out there and what people want and what to expect and what kind of value they place on that, too," Probst said.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Et Cetera Shop, 22 N. Main, recently made third quarter donations to the following nonprofits.

· Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)--$11,000—MCC will use this donation to help families in the country of Chad to fight hunger. Women and children in the southwestern part of Chad have suffered from hunger as a result of a decline in food production, lack of equipment and limited access to land. MCC and their partner have supported female farmers in finding new ways to farm.

· Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS)--$5,000—This donation assisted Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina.

· Christ Respite House--$2,000—The mission of the Christ Respite House, a project of Buhler Mennonite Church, is to provide a safe haven for families in need of housing during times of trouble and difficulties. They recently welcomed a mother and her five children from war torn Ukraine to the safety of central Kansas. Our donation will help this family get started on their journey into our community.

· Birthright of Hutchinson--$2,000—Birthright helps families in need of formula, diapers, clothes, blankets new cribs and car seats. Our donation will go towards providing these supplies.

· Omega Project--$2,000—The Omega Project is in the midst of a $50,000 matching gift campaign hoping to expand their reach into Kingman with a new women’s center. Our gift will help them reach their goal for this project.

The Et Cetera Shop, 22 N. Main in Hutchinson, and its sister shops, Builders Bargains and Medical Bargains, located at 329 W. 5th, continue to offer quality donated items to their customers. 

The Et Cetera Shop is open Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Builders Bargains and Medical Bargains are open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01)&nbsp;spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives&nbsp;for the first time since Americans delivered an Election Day mandate by electing President Donald J. Trump and Republican majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.&nbsp;

During the speech, Rep. Mann laid out his vision for the 119th Congress, including the need to reduce and reprioritize federal spending, secure the border, end the weaponization of the federal government, and spur America’s economic growth.

Below are Mann's remarks, as prepared for delivery.

"Mr. Speaker, when I last spoke on this floor, I laid out the choice the country had before us. On November 5th, 2024, America made its choice loud and clear. America gave Washington, D.C. a mandate, endorsing the greatest political comeback in American history with the election of President Donald J. Trump as the 47th&nbsp;President of the United States and of Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

"Kansans in the Big First District rejected four more years of the chaos we have experienced with President Biden and Vice President Harris. They voted for a government that works for the people and makes their lives easier, not one that handcuffs them and their families with overreaching regulations. They voted for a government that enforces the law and seeks commonsense solutions, not open-border policies&nbsp;that put our national security at risk. They voted to reduce federal spending, to end the weaponization of the federal government once and for all, and for our future.

"When I came to Congress almost four years ago, America was strong. Our streets were safe, and our border was secure. House Republicans and President Trump had passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,&nbsp;putting more money in the pockets of American families and spurring economic growth that led to the strongest U.S. economy in decades. The Trump Administration had spearheaded historic trade&nbsp;agreements and peace agreements across the globe that kept America competitive and secure.

"Rather than capitalizing on that momentum and strength, the Biden-Harris Administration wasted four years pushing through partisan, trillion-dollar spending packages and using the federal government&nbsp;to air its grievances with the previous Administration.&nbsp;And America said no more.

"Mr. Speaker, those days are long gone. This House Republican majority, alongside President Trump and the incoming Senate Republican majority, are ready to restore American greatness and the American&nbsp;dream. We are committed to securing a future American families can feel optimistic about.

"When I ran for Congress, I promised to fight for agriculture and our conservative Kansas values. That commitment stands, and while there is a lot of work to do to get the nation back on track, I humbly&nbsp;accept that challenge. I am committed to working with my colleagues to unleash American energy and finally rein in energy prices that have crippled American families for the past four years. I will fight to make&nbsp;the 2017 tax cuts permanent and once again empower working- and middle-class families who have been strangled by the record-level inflation caused by Washington Democrat spending. I will work for commonsense policies that don’t empower the Mexican cartels or incentivize illegal immigration. Americans deserve an immigration system that makes it easier for people to come here legally and more&nbsp;difficult for people to come here illegally. That should not be controversial.

"The task before us is a big one, but I have never been more confident in our ability to deliver for America."

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks will face a ranked opponent for a fourth-straight game this Saturday when they welcome the 16th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for a Senior Day matchup on FOX with Jason Benetti, Brock Huard and Allison Williams on the call. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT.

The Jayhawks topped No. 7 BYU on Saturday night in Provo to notch their second win over a ranked opponent in as many weeks for the first time in program history. The week prior, Kansas beat No. 17 Iowa State 45-36. Kansas now sits at 4-6 on the season and 3-4 in Big 12 Conference play after the two wins.

Coach Lance Leipold and Kansas will look to make it three wins over ranked opponents in three straight weeks when they face the Buffaloes on Saturday. Colorado comes to Kansas City at 8-2 on the year and 6-1 in the conference. The Buffaloes, under second-year coach Deion Sanders, have won four-straight games all by double digits and have climbed up the national rankings to No. 16 with their recent stretch.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders has thrown for 3,222 yards and 27 touchdowns so far this season. He's second in the country with his 27 touchdown passes and is sixth nationally with his 3,222 yards. The 2023 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year has also rushed for four touchdowns and leads an offense that is third in the Big 12, averaging 34.1 points per game.

The Buffaloes also boast two-way standout and Heisman Trophy candidate Travis Hunter. Hunter, who plays wide receiver and cornerback, has 74 catches for 911 yards and nine touchdowns on offense. The nine touchdowns lead the Big 12 and the 7.4 receptions are second. Defensively, he's added 24 tackles, eight pass breakups, three interceptions and one tackle-for-loss.

The Jayhawk defense will look to be up to the task after a dominating performance against BYU last week. Kansas allowed 13 points in the 17-13 win, marking the team's fewest points allowed to a ranked opponent since surrendering 11 points to No. 2 Oklahoma in 1984. Senior cornerback Mello Dotson notched his fifth interception of the season in the win, which leads the Big 12 Conference and Kansas totaled five tackles-for-loss and a pair of sacks.

Dotson will be one of 30-plus seniors honored before the game for their contributions to the program. The senior class has led Kanas to back-to-back bowl games and wins over ranked opponents for three straight seasons. The headliner of the group may be running back Devin Neal. In his most recent home game against Iowa State, Neal became the school's all-time leading rusher and has since topped the 4,000-yard mark for his career. The Lawrence native is 74 yards away from his third-straight 1,000-yard season and has totaled 28 rushing touchdowns over the last two seasons.

Saturday's game will mark KU's final game this season at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas has won two straight at the venue, beating Houston before the win over Iowa State. The Jayhawks played their six home games in Kansas City this year, both at Arrowhead and Children's Mercy Park, while David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium undergoes major upgrades.

🏈 KU hosts No. 16 Colorado on Saturday in KC

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State High Activities Association Executive Board held its November meetings on Wednesday and Thursday in Topeka.

One of the topics on the agenda was behavior, as the KSHSAA says there have been 301 reported ejections from Kansas interscholastic activities during the fall sports seasons. There were 333 ejections around the same time last year.

Football had 162 total ejections to lead the way among the fall sports. There were 136 player ejections for unsporting conduct, six player ejections for targeting, 13 coach ejections for unsporting conduct towards officials and seven fan ejections.

Soccer had the second-most with 138 total ejections. There were 123 player ejections, 79 red cards that were direct red cards, 22 denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity, four taunting, 23 for using insulting, offensive or abusive language or gesture, two for spitting on an opponent and 15 for committing serious foul play. There were also eight coach ejections and seven fan ejections.

Volleyball had the least ejections of the three sports listed, with just one fan ejection.

The KSHSAA agenda says the staff will facilitate a discussion with the Board regarding behavior and appropriate next steps and tools to develop.

KSHSAA says ejections down from last year for fall sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the rare NFL teams that is getting healthier, and perhaps deeper, as the season progresses.

The biggest boost yet for the two-time defending Super Bowl champs could come Sunday, when the Chiefs hope to have running back Isiah Pacheco and pass rusher Charles Omenihu available against Carolina. Both spent last week working on the scout team and had no problems as they come back from injuries, and that makes it more likely that they are active this week.

“We’ll see on both of those two,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said before heading out to practice Wednesday. “Go through practice and see where they’re at this week and go from there. We’ll just have to see.”

Pacheco has been out since Week 2, when he sustained an injury to his ankle requiring surgery. The Chiefs signed Kareem Hunt almost immediately afterward, and he has done a nice job filling in while Pacheco went through his rehab.

But now, the Chiefs could have both of them available, creating a two-headed attack of somewhat different skill sets.

Hunt is the quintessential between-the-tackle bruiser. He’s had at least 14 carries in each of his seven games with Kansas City, twice surpassing 100 yards rushing.

Pacheco tends to run hard, too, but with more speed and explosiveness. That lends itself to bigger chunk plays, something that the Kansas City offense has been sorely missing. And his infectious energy and enthusiasm is also a contrast to the more quiet, reserved Hunt, and the Chiefs are eager to have that back on the sideline, too.

“I mean, listen, he’s a sparkplug emotionally. He’s something that way,” Reid acknowledged, “and he’s worked his tail off to get to this point right now. We’ve got to keep an eye on him that way. He would have played three weeks ago if it was his choice.”

Indeed, the Chiefs — now 9-1 after a 31-20 loss in Buffalo — seem to be focused on protecting Pacheco from himself.

“It’s going to be us trying to hold him back,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “He wants to be out there as much as possible. But at the same time, he wants to win. He knows the long-term goals we have.”

Meanwhile, the Chiefs hope to have Marquise Brown back on the practice field sometime in December. The wide receiver had surgery on his shoulder after sustaining an injury in a preseason game, and for a while it appeared to be a season-ender. But he has hammered his rehab, and it’s possible that Brown could help the Chiefs at some point in the postseason.

“Making very good progress,” Reid said. “I can’t tell you a time he’ll be back, but he’s another one that’s excited to get out here and get going. I appreciate the way he’s approached this whole thing.”

The Chiefs have tried to upgrade their wide receiver group after losing Brown and Rashee Rice to injuries. The big splash was landing three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins in a trade with Tennessee, but Chiefs general manager Brett Veach also has been scouring the waiver wire and even opposing practice squads for players that could provide additional depth.

The latest addition is wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who joined the practice squad after he was waived by the Patriots on Saturday.

Thornton was a second-round pick of New England in the 2022 draft, when many teams were tantalized by the 4.28-second 40-yard dash time he registered at the NFL scouting combine. But he struggled to live up to expectations, appearing in 28 games with just 13 starts and totaling 39 catches for 385 yards and two touchdowns for the Patriots.

The Chiefs hope they can unlock his natural ability while supplying Mahomes with another player who can stretch the field.

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;On November 20, the Kansas Board of Regents approved a request from Wichita State to enhance the name of the on-campus baseball stadium to Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field at Gene Stephenson Park.The stadium name was enhanced to honor Hall of Fame coach Gene Stephenson who was the head coach at Wichita State from 1978-2013.

"We are grateful to the Kansas Board of Regents for their support of this important honor," said Wichita State Director of Athletics Kevin Saal. "Gene Stephenson developed Wichita State into a national baseball power, advanced one of the top facilities in the country and even today, continues his loyal support of this beloved program.&nbsp; We are proud to enhance the naming of this incredible facility in Coach Stephenson's honor." &nbsp;

When he came to WSU in 1977 from the University of Oklahoma, the Shocker baseball program was just being started again. He was instrumental in building the program and the stadium from the ground up.

Stephenson was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, the Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 and is a three-time NCAA Coach of the Year and 11-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. In 1989, he led the Shockers to the College World Series championship.

He led WSU to seven College World Series appearances, 27 NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Super Regional appearances, 20 Valley regular-season titles, and 17 Valley tournament championships. He directed Wichita State to more wins than any NCAA Division I program in the country eight times and coached 33 players at Wichita State who played in the Major Leagues.

He coached three players named NCAA Player of the Year and one named NCAA Pitcher of the Year. He also coached two players named NCAA Academic Player of the Year and 20 players who earned Academic All-America honors a total of 27 times.

He coached 54 All-Americans, 33 Freshman All-Americans, 15 conference Players of the Year, 12 conference Pitchers of the Year and 13 MLB first-round draft picks. He is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team and won 60 or more games five times and 50 or more games 19 times.

His number 10 is the only Shocker baseball number to be retired.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gallaudet women's volleyball team is signing, quietly winning and rolling into the NCAA Tournament

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sometimes opponents think players on Gallaudet's women's volleyball team are trying to distract them by using their hands and arms to talk in American Sign Language. They're happy to let them think that because the team made up almost entirely of deaf and hard of hearing athletes is 30-4 this season. Gallaudet is back in the NCAA Division III Tournament, succeeding in silence in a sport usually predicated on verbal communication. A victory would be the program's first in the tournament since 2006.

College football picks: Never mind Hoosiers, Ohio State has lots riding on showdown at the Horseshoe

Much has been made about the stakes for unbeaten Indiana in Saturday's top-five showdown with Ohio State. Don't forget what this game means for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hasn't won a Big Ten championship since 2020. That also was the last time the Buckeyes made the College Football Playoff. Ohio State has had its last three seasons ruined by Michigan in the final regular-season game. Imagine the noise in Columbus if Indiana is the spoiler this year. GREAT BEND, Kan. — Hutchinson (4-3, 0-1) scored its least amount of points in the first half of play this season and gave up the most en route to a 10-point halftime deficit to No. 1 Barton (6-0, 1-0).

Hutchinson made just 1-of-7 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes, while Barton shot 45.7% from the floor and made five more buckets.

The Dragons only hit 11-of-16 free throws (68.8%) in the first half, while the Cougars hit 10-of-11 (90.9%).

Hutchinson responded in the second half by knocking down 6-of-7 triples and 8-of-8 free throws to force overtime.

A 9-0 Dragon run with 3:39 left in regulation was capped by a Bobby Cannon triple that put Hutchinson up 75-74.

Aris Rodriguez quickly answered on the other end with a basket of his own to take back the Barton lead.

The teams traded scores over the final two minutes when Barton took the final shot of regulation.

Keandre Kindell had his buzzer-three rattle out with the game deadlocked at 82.

Bo Aldridge scored 16 of his team-high 21 in the second half and overtime, including a triple that knotted things up in the extra frame with 2:24 to play.

DJ Dudley hit one-of-two free-throw attempts with 1:19 left in overtime to tie things up at 89.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (7-0, 1-0) returned to Great Bend for the third time in five days, this time to open conference play against Barton (4-3, 0-1).

In just her third start of the season, Regina Donanu led the Cougars with a career-high 15 points at halftime.

Hutchinson hit just 1-of-8 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes and trailed Barton by seven at the break.

Kahlen Norris scored all 12 of her points in the second half and Brynne Katcher added another 10 to her total 12 as the Dragons outscored the Cougars 35-12 in the final 20 minutes.

Barton went scoreless for 13 minutes and 27 seconds in the second half as Hutchinson surged to a 21-point lead with 3:34 to play.

Hailey Jackson scored 11 of her team-high 13 in the first half and added seven rebounds.

The Dragons held Donanu to two points in the second half and 1-of-5 shooting.
