Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West Avenue B on the south side.

In 1913, John Dillon opened a Dillon Mercantile store at 318 N. Main, one of four already open in Sterling, Nickerson and Lyons.

In 1915, Dillon moved to Hutch and opened another store.

During World War I, his sons, Ray and Clyde, were serving in the military and John sold his interest to partners C.O. Mammel and Dave Theede.

By 1921, after the war, John, Ray and Clyde incorporated under the name of J.S. Dillon and Sons, and opened their first store at 13-15 W. Ave. B. The first photo shows that store right after opening.

The second photo shows the interior of store No. 1 about 1925 with all the staff.

In 1934, a new store No. 1 was built at 200 S. Main and this building was sold to Mammel's Grocery Co. The third photo shows the building when it was subdivided into Mammel's, auto parts and a feed store.

In 1955, Mammel's underwent an extensive remodel, turning it into a much larger supermarket. The fourth photo shows that market at opening.

After the Mammel's era, the stores were all sold off and this address became the Taylor Auction House. The fifth photo shows that era occupancy in 1975.

After that time frame, the building housed the NAPA Auto Parts store. The sixth photo shows that store in 2015.

The seventh photo shows the 13-15 W. Ave. B building today, now housing the Fair Price Clothing store with the property being owned by Wray Properties L.L.C.

Residents will have two opportunities to learn more and ask questions about the upcoming city sales tax ballot measure as the City of Hutchinson prepares for the March 3, 2026 election.

City officials are hosting public information meetings at Memorial Hall on:

Both sessions will feature the same presentation and will be held at the same location.

According to the city, staff will walk attendees through what will appear on the ballot, why a city sales tax is being considered, and how the proposal was developed. The goal is to provide residents with clear, factual information ahead of the vote.

Community members will also be able to submit questions during the meetings, with answers provided by city staff and elected officials.

The meetings are open to the public, and residents can attend either date to learn more before casting their ballots in March.

&nbsp; Last week I attended Kansas Farm Bureau’s Day at the Statehouse along with a couple hundred of my fellow Kansas Farm Bureau members. If you have never attended a Day at the Statehouse, I highly recommend doing so — it is truly an example of grassroots advocacy in action and proof of why Farm Bureau is so effective advocating for farmers and ranchers.

The program was exceptionally good and informative, laying out the issues of the current legislative session. Kansas Farm Bureau’s action plan for the session was also laid out for all the participants. It was the culmination of our policy development from the past year that came from those same members who showed up to lobby at the Capitol.

The work Kansas Farm Bureau members did over that 24-hour period should make all of us proud. We had members from every corner of the state representing all segments of agriculture.

One theme that was repeated several times was the value of each member interacting with their elected officials. Do not get me wrong, we have the best lobbying crew, and I would not trade them for any others, but the real power of Kansas Farm Bureau is its members, and our elected officials understand that.

I watched legislators seek out Farm Bureau members during an evening reception and the next day at the Capitol. They were doing this because of the value and the power of each of the 105 county Farm Bureaus in Kansas. No other organization has that kind of grassroots in each community in Kansas.

I eavesdropped on some conversations, and we truly had the ears and attention of those elected officials. Repeatedly, I heard something along the lines of, “what are Kansas Farm Bureau’s priorities this session?" Then I listened as members articulated our positions on issues important to agriculture.

Important conversations that would have been hard for our staff to have had. For one thing, it would have taken hours and days to meet with all those officials. The more important piece was the attention paid to the message. The farmers and ranchers involved in the discussion understand the policy they are lobbying because they helped develop it in response to their experiences navigating current laws and regulations every day.

We all know we cannot be at the Capitol each day the legislature is in session, and that is why our staff are so critical, but it is the personal relationship between voters and elected officials that makes a visit from a member so important. It is the informed, involved members that make Kansas Farm Bureau so effective, and this is why Day at the Statehouse is so important.

While Day at the Statehouse is important, it is equally important that members reach out to their elected representatives to let them know what issues are important to them. Kansas Farm Bureau is as strong as its members and, from what I witnessed last week, we are rooted in strength.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advanced American farmers and equipment owners’ lawful right to repair their farm and other nonroad diesel equipment. EPA’s guidance to manufacturers clarifies that the Clean Air Act (CAA) supports, rather than restricts, Americans’ ability to make repairs on their own, and makes clear manufacturers can no longer use the CAA to justify limiting access to repair tools or software. For America’s farmers, timely and affordable repairs are essential to planting, harvesting, and keeping operations running.

“EPA is proud to set the record straight and protect farmers. For far too long, manufacturers have wrongly used the Clean Air Act to monopolize the repair markets, hurting our&nbsp;farmers,” said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. “Common sense is following the law as it is written, and that is what the Trump EPA is committed to doing. By protecting every American’s right to repair, we’re not just fixing devices, we’re securing a stronger, more independent future for our country.”

“This is another win for American farmers and ranchers by the Trump Administration. By clarifying manufacturers can no longer use the Clean Air Act to justify limiting access to repair tools or software, we are reaffirming&nbsp;the lawful right of American farmers and equipment owners to repair their farm equipment,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins. “Thank you, Administrator Zeldin, for continuing to put farmers first. This is expected to save our farmers thousands in unnecessary repairs, saving much needed funds after Bidenflation drove up equipment costs on average 45%.”

“EPA’s guidance affirming the Right to Repair will save our agricultural communities thousands of dollars by eliminating corporate middlemen and empowering farmers to fix their own equipment,”&nbsp;said Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler.&nbsp;“The Clean Air Act has long crushed family farmers across America – but under the Trump Administration, they are finally getting the regulatory relief to break free from burdensome Green New Scam rules and focus on the vital job of feeding, clothing, and fueling America and the world.”

For years, prominent equipment manufacturers have interpreted the CAA’s emission control anti-tampering provisions as preventing them from making essential repair tools available to all Americans. This has forced farmers to take their equipment exclusively to manufacturer-authorized dealers to be fixed, even though the repair could have been made in the field or at a nearby independent repair shop. Not only has this made repairs more costly, but it has also caused many farmers to&nbsp;opt for&nbsp;older agricultural equipment that lack modern emission controls simply because they can fix that equipment themselves.

EPA’s guidance does not change the law, weaken emission standards, or reduce compliance obligations. Rather, it clarifies what the CAA already states, that temporary overrides of emission control systems are allowed when it is for the “purpose of repair” to that equipment to obtain proper functionality. This clarification applies to all nonroad diesel engines equipped with advanced emission control technologies including selective catalytic reduction and inducement systems as well as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system repairs. Importantly, farmers and equipment owners are not required to rely on authorized dealers exclusively to fix equipment. This makes clear that the law should not serve as a barrier to timely, affordable maintenance of agricultural equipment.

Monday's action will not only expand consumer choice and provide opportunities for farmers but also encourage the use of newer farm equipment. This underscores the agency’s commitment to both America’s farmers and EPA’s core mission of protecting human health and the environment.

EPA advances farmers’ right to repair

Parents of future preschool and kindergarten students in Buhler USD 313 are encouraged to mark their calendars for upcoming application clinics designed to help families prepare for the 2026–27 school year.

District officials say the clinics allow staff to accurately plan classroom space, staffing and resources while making the enrollment process easier for parents.

Families may attend any of the scheduled dates and locations, regardless of which school their child will attend. Teachers and office staff will ensure enrollment information is forwarded to the correct building.

District leaders noted that current Buhler preschool students who will turn 5 before Sept. 1 and are moving on to kindergarten do not need to attend. Enrollment paperwork will be sent home with those students.

A familiar face in the classroom and on the sidelines is being recognized for making an early impact at Trinity Catholic School.

Isaac Miller has received the St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Award for Outstanding New Teacher in the Diocese of Wichita, an honor presented during Catholic Schools Week to celebrate excellence among early-career educators.

Now in his second year at Trinity Catholic, Miller teaches English at both the junior high and high school levels. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he also serves as a coach for football, track, and forensics, giving students opportunities to grow both academically and through extracurricular activities.

School leaders say Miller’s commitment to students inside and outside the classroom has quickly made him a valued member of the Trinity Catholic community. His involvement across multiple programs reflects the school’s emphasis on mentorship, leadership, and well-rounded student development.

The St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Award recognizes new teachers across the Diocese who demonstrate dedication, faith-centered service, and a strong impact on their school communities.

United Way Reaches Campaign Goal to Support Reno County Programs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — United Way of Reno County is proud to announce it has met its 2025-26 campaign goal of raising $1.35 million, ensuring continued support for 37 local nonprofit programs serving Reno County residents in the year ahead.

Reaching this milestone was truly a community effort, made possible by donations of every size fromlong-time supporters to first-time givers. Contributions came in many forms—from direct checks and cash gifts to employee payroll deductions and business support—reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening Reno County.

“This achievement belongs to our entire community,” said UWRC CEO, Lacey Mills. “Because people chose to give in ways that were meaningful to them, and because they trust UWRC to invest their gift back into this community, we can continue supporting local programs which serve residents at every stage of life and meet a variety of needs.”

Meeting the campaign goal means local organizations can continue providing vital services to local residents, addressing needs across the entire lifespan—from newborns receiving free therapy services in their homes to end-of-life care being available on a sliding scale. Through these 37 funded programs, United Way of Reno County and its donors will help touch the lives of approximately 19,000 people, representing 1-in-4 Reno County neighbors.

“This goal was reached because our community said yes—to giving, to connection, and to taking action,” said Campaign Co-Chairs, Rion and Darcy Rhoades. “We’re proud to have helped champion this work, which will create real, long-lasting impact across Reno County.”

United Way of Reno County reaches campaign goal

One of Cancer Council of Reno County’s biggest traditions is also its biggest lifeline.

The Reno Roundup fundraiser returns Feb. 21 to the Reno County Fairgrounds, marking the event’s 30th anniversary and bringing with it a sold-out crowd, a throwback casino theme and a renewed focus on helping neighbors facing cancer.

“We’re really excited,” said Katie Brown the Director of Development for the Cancer Council of Reno County “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, but it’s more than just raising money. It’s about creating a sense of community and connecting our neighbors, patients and families.”

Nearly 860 attendees are expected for the evening event, which has grown from humble beginnings into one of the largest annual fundraisers in Reno County.

From kitchen table to countywide impact

Cancer Council leaders say the Roundup actually predates the organization itself. The event began in the late 1990s benefiting the American Cancer Society’s local chapter before community leaders formed the Cancer Council to keep more of the money raised local.

“Cancer Council started around a kitchen table in 1998,” Brown said. “The goal was to make sure funds raised here stayed here.”

Today, every dollar raised supports local patients directly through financial and emotional assistance.

Ashley Thompson, patient care director, works one-on-one with more than 360 patients and families across the county.

“We try to fill the gaps that insurance doesn’t cover — those unexpected out-of-pocket costs,” Thompson said. “From medication co-pays and prosthetics to rent and utility bills, we pivot with each patient because every cancer journey is different.”

Support doesn’t stop when treatment ends. Patients remain eligible for help for up to five years after diagnosis, including during remission and follow-up care.

“We recognize that even when there’s no evidence of disease, it’s not over,” Thompson said. “It’s still life-changing.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with food and drinks, followed by a program and live auction. This year’s “casino night” theme brings gaming tables where guests can win chips and trade them for chances at jackpot prizes.

A silent auction and raffle items will also be available, with online bidding opening the Monday before the event so even those not attending can participate.

Tickets and tables are sold out, but organizers say a wait list is available and raffle entries can be purchased online.

The event’s presenting sponsor, Midway Motors, is returning for its 11th year.

“We’re so thankful for their dedication,” Brown said. “Their support helps make all of this possible.”

In addition to financial assistance, the Cancer Council offers emotional support through monthly groups, including a women’s Hope Group and Cancer Connections for patients, caregivers and family members.

The nonprofit has also begun expanding into early detection efforts. Last year, it hosted a prostate cancer screening that drew more than 40 participants, with several requiring follow-up care. This year’s awareness focus will be colorectal cancer.

Organizers say the mission remains simple: take care of local people when they need it most.

“Everything we raise stays right here,” Brown said. “It’s your friends, your family, your neighbors. We’re completely funded by this community, and we’re just so grateful.”

Reno Roundup celebrates 30 years of supporting local cancer patients in Reno County

KANSAS CITY —A woman was rescued from a storm drain Wednesday near the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City.

Just before 7:30p.m., Kansas City Fire Department crews&nbsp;responded to a reported confined space rescue at 3250 N. Ameristar Drive, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

 On arrival crews reported a woman, in her forties, was stuck in a storm drain. She was trapped several hundred feet in the pipe. 

KCFD's rescue division secured the scene and sent a team into the pipe to free and retrieve the victim. 

After 90 minutes, at 9:30p.m. fire department crews were able to finally rescue the victim. The woman had been stuck for several hours and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. She was listed in stable condition, according to Hopkins. No other injuries were reported.

Woman trapped tor hours inside storm drain in Kansas City

MARION COUNTY—A third Kansas school district in less than a month is canceling classes and other activities due to illness.

On Wednesday, Centre School District USD 397 announced they will not have class the rest of the week due to illness, according to the school district social media page.&nbsp;The district includes students in pre-k through 12th grade.&nbsp;

On Monday, USD 511 Attica reported there would be no school or other activities due to sickness. The district expects to hold classes and participate other activities starting Thursday, according to the district's social media page.

On January 14, Fairfield USD 310 canceled classes and participation in activities due to illness.

Another Kan. school district cancels classes due to illness

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie sent a public message to her 84-year-old mother’s kidnapper on Wednesday saying that her family is ready to talk but wants proof that she is alive.

Guthrie said in a recorded video posted on social media that her family has heard media reports about a ransom letter for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mother-missing-arizona-tucson-0d6b55fd24f54b2526fd5f8894a52ff2">Nancy Guthrie</a>, who authorities believe was taken from her home in Arizona against her will.

“We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated,” Savannah Guthrie said while reading from a prepared statement. “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”

She was last seen around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, when she was dropped off at home by family after having dinner with them, the sheriff’s department said. She was reported missing midday Sunday after she didn’t appear at a church.

The family posted the message after police conducted a search in and around Nancy Guthrie’s home for several hours Wednesday.

Kevin Adger, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said investigators had been at the home earlier in the week for a couple of days and then turned it back over to the family with the understanding they could go back if they needed to.

“This is a follow up investigation,” he said in reference to officials returning Wednesday.

Adger said the sheriff’s department was not commenting on the video released by the family.

Multiple media organizations reported receiving purported ransom notes Tuesday that they handed over to investigators. The sheriff’s department had said it was taking the notes and other tips seriously but declined to comment further.

Savannah Guthrie was at times emotional during the recording, with her voice cracking. She smiled and looked into the camera when addressing her mother directly, saying that the family was praying for her and that people were looking for her.

“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God’s precious daughter,” she said.

Savannah Guthrie described her mother as a “kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light” and said she was funny, spunky and clever.

“Talk to her and you’ll see,” she said.

Guthrie was flanked by her sister Annie and her brother Camron who both also spoke. Annie called their mother their beacon and said they need her.

“Mamma, If you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you,” Annie Guthrie said.

Authorities on Wednesday offered no detailed update on their search. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos' office said detectives still were speaking with anyone who had contact with Nancy Guthrie last weekend but that no suspect or person of interest had been identified.

Nanos suggested there was video from some cameras, though he didn’t elaborate, adding: “That’s all been submitted and we’re doing our best with the companies that own those cameras or built those cameras.”

There were signs of forced entry at the home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood. Guthrie has limited mobility, and officials do not believe she left on her own. A sheriff's dispatcher talking to deputies during a search Sunday indicated that she has high blood pressure, a pacemaker and heart issues, according to audio from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.broadcastify.com/">broadcastify.com</a>.

Jim Mason, longtime commander of a search-and-rescue posse in Maricopa County, isn't involved in the search for Guthrie but said desert terrain can make looking for missing people difficult. He said it can be hard to peer into areas that are dense with mesquite trees, cholla cactus and other desert brush.

"Some of it is so thick you can’t drive through it,” Mason said.

A couple hundred people attended an evening vigil for Nancy Guthrie at a Tucson church where they heard prayers and placed lit candles on an altar. A priest prayed for God to comfort Guthrie and to bring her home to those she loves.

Afterward, Jeremy Thacker had tears in his eyes as he described the heartbreak and helplessness he was experiencing over Guthrie's disappearance. He worked with Savannah Guthrie at a local news station and they shared losing their fathers at a young age. His own sister was kidnapped when he was young.

Thacker said he knew Nancy Guthrie to be sharp, grounded and earnest.

“We’re all holding our breath,” Thacker said.

On the other side of the country, Victory Church in Albany, New York, said it’s offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to finding Nancy Guthrie.

“Me and my wife, we watch Savannah every single morning. We’ve heard of her faith. We’ve heard of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/savannah-guthrie-mother-missing-nancy-042abd04a6d87e14eecb22f0bc2893d1">her mom’s faith</a>. And she’s got such a sweet spirit,” Pastor Charlie Muller said.

The White House said President Donald Trump called and spoke with Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday.

“I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely.”

For a third day, “Today” opened with Guthrie’s disappearance, but Savannah Guthrie was not at the anchor’s desk. NBC Sports said Tuesday that she will not be covering the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics “as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time.”

The “Today” host grew up in Tucson, graduated from the University of Arizona and previously worked as a reporter and anchor at Tucson television station KVOA. Her parents settled in Tucson in the 1970s when she was a young child. The youngest of three siblings, she credits her mom with holding their family together after her father died of a heart attack at 49, when Savannah was just 16.

🎥'Today' show host asks kidnapper to provide proof mother is alive

Port-au-Prince —At the direction of the Secretary of War, three U.S. warships including the USS Stockdale, USCGC Stone and USCGC Diligence have arrived in the Bay of Port-au-Prince as part of Operation Southern Spear, according to a statement from the U.S. Embassy Haiti.

"Their presence reflects the United States’ unwavering commitment to the security, stability, and a brighter future for the Republic of Haiti. The U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard reaffirm their partnership and support to ensure a safer and more prosperous Haiti."

US Warships arrive off Haiti in campaign against drug traffickers

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a shooting in Wichita have a suspect in custody.

Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a reported shooting in the 900 block of S. Rutan, according to a media release.

Officers arrived and found a 40-year-old man who received multiple gunshot wounds. EMS transported him to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect, identified from Sedgwick County booking records as 55-year-old Gary M. Scott, ran from the area after the shooting but was apprehended by Officers. Scott was later booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of of aggravated burglary and aggravated battery.&nbsp; He is being held on bonds totaling over $575,000, according to online jail records.

Kansas shooting suspect jailed after he ran from crime scene

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after an encounter with a sheriff's deputy on a northeast Kansas highway.

Just after 4 p.m. Jan. 31, that Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a person was slumped over the wheel in a Ford Edge in the intersection of 118th&nbsp;and U.S. Highway, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The reporting party attempted to wake the person up by using his horn in his vehicle. Deputies arrived on the scene to find the driver and passenger both asleep in the vehicle.&nbsp; One of the deputies reported what allegedly appeared to be a methamphetamine pipe in the hand of the driver.&nbsp; The driver and passenger were arrested.

The driver, Lloyd Allan Wabaunsee, 36, of Mayetta and the passenger, Raven Marie Barber, 44, of Mayetta were transported to the Jackson County Jail. TYLER, Texas (AP) — The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been arrested in Texas after authorities said he violated his probation from a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/patrick-mahomes-father-guilty-dwi-447e2f0c6a93b308b0bbd3871ed8d1a1">conviction for driving while intoxicated.</a>

Patrick “Pat” Mahomes Sr., 55, was arrested Tuesday during a meeting with his probation officer after a warrant was obtained for a probation violation, authorities said. He remained in Smith County jail in Tyler on Wednesday. His attorney did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

The elder Mahomes was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty in August 2024 to a DWI charge. On Jan. 1, he had a high alcohol reading on his ankle monitor, according to a probation violation report.

Mahomes Sr.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/cfcca2814d423c6411948c30e38d98cf">had been arrested</a>&nbsp;on the DWI charge in February 2024, a little more than a week before his son led the Chiefs to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/366151ee795360fbc8d3e4d029a394a6">second straight Super Bowl</a>&nbsp;championship with a win over San Francisco.

Mahomes Sr. is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for six teams during an 11-year major league career that ended in 2003, according to Baseball Reference.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A man convicted of trying&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-routh-guilty-c56e9dbdc640cfc377aa2267107697df">to assassinate President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on a Florida golf course in 2024 was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-classified-documents-smith-c66d5ffb7ba86c1b991f95e89bdeba0c">U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon</a>&nbsp;pronounced Ryan Routh’s fate in the same Fort Pierce courtroom that erupted into chaos in September when he tried to stab himself shortly after jurors&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-attempt-d49985a690e678a9ccbf3610c102704d">found him guilty</a>&nbsp;on all counts.

Prosecutors had asked for life without parole, saying Routh is unrepentant and has never apologized. A defense attorney brought in for his sentencing asked for 27 years, noting that Routh is already turning 60.

Routh also received a consecutive seven-year sentence for one of his gun convictions.

Routh's sentencing had initially been scheduled for December, but Cannon agreed to move the date back after Routh decided to use an attorney during the sentencing phase instead of representing himself as he did for most of the trial.

Prosecutors said in a sentencing memorandum that Routh has yet to accept any responsibility and should spend the rest of his life in prison, in accordance with federal sentencing guidelines. He was convicted of trying to assassinate a major presidential candidate, using a firearm in furtherance of a crime, assaulting a federal officer, possessing a firearm as a felon and using a gun with a defaced serial number.

“Routh remains unrepentant for his crimes, never apologized for the lives he put at risk, and his life demonstrates near-total disregard for law,” the memo said.

Routh's new defense attorney, Martin L. Roth, asked for a variance from sentencing guidelines: 20 years in prison on top of a seven-year, mandatory sentence for one of the gun convictions.

“The defendant is two weeks short of being sixty years old,” Roth wrote in a filing. “A just punishment would provide a sentence long enough to impose sufficient but not excessive punishment, and to allow defendant to experience freedom again as opposed to dying in prison.”

Prosecutors said Routh spent weeks plotting to kill Trump before aiming a rifle through shrubbery as the Republican presidential candidate played golf on Sept. 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club.

At Routh’s trial, a Secret Service agent helping protect Trump on the golf course testified that he spotted Routh before Trump came into view. Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and run away without firing a shot.

In the motion requesting an attorney, Routh offered to trade his life in a prisoner swap with people unjustly held in other countries, and said an offer still stood for Trump to “take out his frustrations on my face.”

“Just a quarter of an inch further back and we all would not have to deal with all of this mess forwards, but I always fail at everything (par for the course),” Routh wrote.

In her decision granting Routh an attorney, Cannon chastised the “disrespectful charade” of Routh's motion, saying it made a mockery of the proceedings. But the judge, nominated by Trump in 2020, said she wanted to err on the side of legal representation.

Cannon signed off last summer on Routh’s request to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-attempt-florida-644c71bc607e4ebad5115f2a490b314c">represent himself</a>&nbsp;at trial. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that criminal defendants have the right to represent themselves in court proceedings, as long as they can show a judge they are competent to waive their right to be defended by an attorney.

Routh’s former federal public defenders served as standby counsel and were present during the trial.
