Hutchinson- Michael Dean Wallace Sr., 75, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022, at his home in Hutchinson, Kansas. Michael was born on July 15, 1947, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Vance Darling and Mary Jean (Ribble) Wallace. Michael graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1965 and attended Bethel College and Hutchinson Community College where he received his Associates Degree. He also attended Wichita Area Technical School where he received his Nursing License. He loved farming and was a self-employed farmer for 15 years. Michael opened up and was the Manager of McDonalds on 30th St. in Hutchinson. He served in the United States Navy as a corpsman, where he received two purple hearts in the Vietnam War. He also served in the United States Marine Corps and The National Guard. He was honorably discharged from all three branches. On July 11, 1998, he married Becky Tucker in Hutchinson. Michael was a member of The Father’s House, the Military Order of Purple Hearts and the American Legion Post 68.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Doug Wallace.

Michael is survived by his wife, Becky Wallace; five children, Georgie (Al) Jacobs, Michael (Melissa) Wallace Jr., Michelle Wallace, Daniel (Lindsey) Wallace and Ryan Pinkston; 10 grandchildren, Jake, Zachary, Ashley, Rylee, Reis, Kaden, Olivia, Austin, Shawn and Cara; six great grandchildren, Kya, Hartley, Jackson, Mila, Stevie and Jovie; three sisters, Kathy (Jud) McClanahan, Debbie Gibson and Becky Wallace. Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at The Fathers House, 1505 E. 20th Ave, Hutchinson. Down two sets to 2 and down 13-12 in the decisive fifth set, the No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team rallied for a key Jayhawk West victory over the Colby Trojans on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Arena.

Led by pin hitters&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/golden_taniya_58dk">Taniya Golden</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/miller_baylee_hctl">Baylee Miller</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/briseno_aleandra_n0jz">Alejandra Briseno</a>, the Blue Dragons avoided a second-straight home conference loss, rallying to defeat Colby 20-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 17-15.

The Blue Dragons improve to 23-9 overall and 10-2 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons have a short turnaround with a Monday home match against Pratt at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons also complete a regular-season sweep of Colby, which fell to 13-11 overall and 4-9 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons are now 3-2 in five-set matches this season.

After the teams split the first two sets and Colby dominated the third set, Golden, Briseno and Miller combined for 11 kills to lead the Dragons to a four-set victory.

Then trailing 13-12 in the fifth set, the Blue Dragons took a timeout. Out of the timeout, Golden had a kill to tie the set at 13. Briseno then had kills at 13-all, 14-all and 15-all before a Miller service ace completed the comeback.

After hitting just .138 in the first four sets, the Blue Dragons had 13 kills and hit .357 in the fifth set.

Golden had 19 kills to lead the Blue Dragons on .212 hitting. Golden had her first career double-double with a career-high 16 digs. Golden added two blocks.

Miller finished with nine kills, 12 digs, two blocks and two service aces.

Briseno, who is battling back from injury, played only three sets and finished with eight kills and hit .312. All eight kills came in the fourth and fifth sets.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .194-.179, but out-dug the Trojans 79-59. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/harvey_morgan_2ssb">Morgan Harvey</a>&nbsp;had a team-high 19 digs. The Dragons had eight team blocks with freshman middle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/dean_anna_mwqh">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;getting two solo blocks and five total blocks.

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/serrano_andrea_m5cv">Andrea Serrano</a>&nbsp;had 30 assists, seven digs and two of Hutchinson's eight service aces.

Alessia Bergesio had 19 digs, IIlaia Chiericati had 16 kills and Maelie Chupin had 14 kills to lead Colby.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons shot out to a 7-2 lead after a Dean kill. Colby went on a 7-2 run to lead 10-9 after an Anna Gazzerro solo block. Dean and Golden teamed up for a block for a 15-12 Hutchinson lead. The Dragons led 19-15, but saw Colby go on a 10-1 run, including a run of nine-straight points to take the first set. The Dragons hit .069 in the set.

SET 2: The Dragons won the second set despite Colby hitting .333 in the set. The Dragons led 9-7 after a Colby service error. A Dragon attack error capped a 4-0 Trojan run and trailed 11-9. Colby stretched its lead to 19-15 after a Bergesio kill. A Connor kill started a 5-1 Dragon run and the Dragons tied the set at 20-20 on a Miller service ace. Trailing 23-22, Penaflor and Golden had a double block to tie the set, Golden's kill gave the Dragons a set point and a Serrano ace finished off the set and tied the match at 1-1.

SET 3: Little went right for Hutchinson in the third set as Colby jumped out to leads of 7-3, 11-5 and 14-6. The Dragons closed within 16-11 after a Connor kill, but the Trojans scored four unanswered points to assume complete control again. Colby hit .276 in the set while the Blue Dragons hot .036.

SET 4: Briseno started to come to life in the fourth set for the Dragons. Her kill snapped a 4-0 Colby run and cut the Dragon deficit to 11-8. Still down 13-10, the Dragons reeled off five in a row to take a 15-13 lead. Leading 18-16, the Dragons went on a 5-1 run, taking a 23-17 lead. Colby then scored four-straight to pull within 23-21, but Briseno's fourth kill of the set snapped that run and the Dragons won the set on Colby's 10 attack error of the set.

The Blue Dragons finally claimed a tremendous scramble point with a Golden kill to knot the score at 13. A Briseno kill gave the Dragons a match point. Colby fought off two match points. Briseno had a kill off the block for a 16-15 lead and Miller closed out the match for a 17-15 victory.

In fact, four Blue Dragons placed third through sixth in the women's 5,000-meter race as the Blue Dragons finished second as a team, narrowly bumped off the top spot on the awards stand by one point, 37-38.

Coming off having 7 of 9 runners setting new career-bests at the Chili Pepper Festival in Arkansas two weeks ago, Larson led the Blue Dragons with a third-place individual finish with a time of 19:25.6. Larson broke the Blue Dragons' 5,000-meter record at the Chili Pepper.

Hoskinson finished shortly after in fourth, clocking in at 19:32.52.

The Blue Dragon parade kept coming as freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/lambert_gracie_ynnn">Gracie Lambert</a>&nbsp;crossed the finish line fifth with a time of 20:01.43. Cocking followed closely behind Lambert and finished in sixth at 20:04.43.

The next Blue Dragon to finish was freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/fulmer_adaline_lsph">Adaline Fulmer</a>, who came in 21st with a time of 21:26.17.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/baetz_courtney_njzm">Courtney Baetz</a>&nbsp;came in 23rd, finishing with a time of 21:38.47.

Also finishing in the Top 30 were freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/van_zelfden_ellie_fv2r">Ellie Van Zelfden</a>&nbsp;in 26th with a time of 21:49.25 and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/aden_lauren_pgea">Lauren Aden</a>, who came in 29th with a time of 22:02.50.

Cloud County's Lucy Ndungu was the race's individual winner with a time of 19:08.53. Her sophomore teammate Melody Ochana finished right behind her in second place with a time of 19:25.60.

The Blue Dragons will prepare for the Region VI Cross Country Championship, which will be Friday, Oct. 28 at Fun Valley in Hutchinson.

👟 HutchCC: Larson, Hoskinson lead dragons to narrow runner-up finish at the Ollie Isom

The Hutchinson Community College Men's Basketball team has been tapped as the preseason favorite to win the 2022-23 Jayhawk Conference championship this season.

The league's annual Preseason Coaches' Poll was released on Friday with the Blue Dragons at the top of the list. This is the first time the Dragons have been a preseason pick to win the league since the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season. Last season, the Blue Dragons were picked fifth in the preseason coaches' poll.

Hutchinson, Butler, Coffeyville, Garden City and Cowley are the top five teams in the preseason coaches' coach.

For the second-straight season, the Jayhawk Conference is a 13-team one-division league with the entire league playing a double round-robin schedule.

The Blue Dragons will open the season at home on Tuesday, November 1 against Fort Scott at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Dragons will then play Triton College and NEO in the BSN Tip-Off Classic on November 4-5 at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons will also play host to the Papa Jones Blue Dragon Preseason Jamboree on Sunday, November 23 at the Sports Arena.

Beginning his second season, Blue Dragon head coach Tommy DeSalme returns four players from a 26-9 team that was a Jayhawk Conference and Region VI runner-up and made it to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;saw the most action last season for the Dragons. Garrison averaged 3.9 points and shot 34.4 percent from 3-point range last season. He will be joined by guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>, who played only five games before being lost for the season with an injury. Franklin averaged 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Also back are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/mcclure_trey_gb8i">Trey McClure</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frederick_ra-sean_ozi1">Ra'Sean Frederick</a>, who was lost to a season-ending injury during the preseason last year.

🏀 HutchCC: Blue Dragon men preseason pick to win KJCCC

For the first time since the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season, the Hutchinson Community College Women's Basketball team is the preseason choice to win the Jayhawk Conference, according to the league's annual Coaches' Poll released on Friday.

Head coach John Ontjes begins his 16th season with the Blue Dragons. Only once since 2010 have the Blue Dragons not been picked either first or second in the KJCCC preseason rankings. That was a third-place pick in 2013. The Blue Dragons have never been picked lower than fourth in a preseason poll under Ontjes.

The 2022-23 Blue Dragons will be going after a fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference championship. Last season, Hutchinson shared the title with Independence.

In addition to the conference championship, the Blue Dragons won the Region VI championship and advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament, finishing the season with a 29-6 record.

The Blue Dragons return two starters and six overall letter winners from last season.

First-Team All-American and KJCCC Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;is back this season.

Williams led the KJCCC in scoring last season, averaging 18.6 points per game. Williams shot 41.9 percent overall this past season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line. Williams' team-high 83 3-point goals were the fourth most by a freshman and ninth most in Blue Dragon history. Her 148 made free throws were second most in freshman history and fifth most in single-season history.

Williams became the Blue Dragons' all-time freshman leader and was No. 2 all-time in Blue Dragon scoring with 651 total points.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Jan. 6 committee voted unanimously Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump, demanding his personal testimony as it unveiled startling new video of close aides describing his multi-part plan to overturn his 2020 election loss that led to his supporters' fierce&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">assault on the U.S. Capitol.</a>

With alarming messages from the U.S. Secret Service warning of violence and vivid new video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-united-states-presidential-elections-nancy-pelosi-election-2020-3ca391a6ca811b40e490909cbf45c5c9">congressional leaders pleading for help</a>, the panel showed the raw desperation at the Capitol. Using language frequently seen in criminal indictments, the panel said that Trump had acted in a “premeditated” way ahead of Jan. 6, 2021, despite countless aides and officials telling him he had lost.

Trump is almost certain to fight the subpoena and decline to testify. On his social media outlet he blasted members for not asking him earlier — though he didn’t say he would have complied —and called the panel “a total BUST.”

“We must seek the testimony under oath of January 6's central player,” said Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the committee’s vice chair, ahead of the vote.

In the committee’s 10th public session, just weeks before the congressional midterm elections, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-elections-democracy-government-and-politics-6f302d624f539504339dc48d938eb6e0?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=RelatedStories&amp;utm_campaign=position_01">panel summed up</a>&nbsp;Trump’s “staggering betrayal” of his oath of office, as Chairman Bennie Thompson put it, describing the former president's unprecedented attempt to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

While the effort to subpoena Trump may languish, more a nod to history than an effective summons, the committee has made clear it is considering whether to send its findings in a criminal referral to the Justice Department.

In one of its most riveting exhibits, the panel showed previously unseen footage of congressional leaders phoning for help during the assault as Trump refused to call off the mob.

Speaker Pelosi can be seen on a call with the governor of neighboring Virginia, explaining as she shelters with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and others that the governor of Maryland has also been contacted. Later the video shows Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and other GOP leaders as the group asks the Department of Defense for help.

“They’re breaking the law in many different ways,” Pelosi says at one point. “And quite frankly, much of it at the instigation of the president of the United States.”

The footage also portrays Vice President Mike Pence -- not Trump -- stepping in to help calm the violence, telling Pelosi and the others he has spoken with Capitol Police, as Congress plans to resume its session that night to certify Biden’s election.

The video was from Pelosi’s daughter, a documentary filmmaker.

In never-before-seen Secret Service messages, the panel produced evidence that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-florida-virginia-conspiracy-government-and-politics-6ac80882e8cf61af36be6c46252ac24c">extremist groups</a>&nbsp;provided the muscle in the fight for Trump’s presidency, planning weeks before the attack to send a violent force to Washington.

The Secret Service warned in a Dec. 26, 2020, email of a tip that members of the right-wing Proud Boys planned to outnumber the police in a march in Washington on Jan. 6.

"It felt like the calm before the storm,” one Secret Service agent wrote in a group chat.

To describe the president’s mindset, the committee presented new and previously seen material, including interviews with Trump’s top aides and Cabinet officials — including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General William Barr and Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia — in which some described the president acknowledging that he had lost.

In one, according to ex-White House official Alyssa Farah Griffin, Trump looked up at a television and said, “Can you believe I lost to this (expletive) guy?”

Cabinet members also said in interviews shown at the hearing that they believed that once legal avenues had been exhausted, that should have been the end of Trump’s efforts to remain in power.

“In my view, that was the end of the matter,” Barr said of the Dec. 14 vote of the Electoral College.

But rather than the end of Trump’s efforts, it was only the beginning — as the president summoned the crowd to Washington on Jan. 6.

The panel showed clips of Trump at his rally near the White House that day saying the opposite of what he had been told. He then tells supporters he will march with them to the Capitol. That never happened.

“There is no defense that Donald Trump was duped or irrational," said Cheney. "No president can defy the rule of law and act this way in our constitutional republic, period.”

Thursday's hearing opened at a mostly empty Capitol complex, with most lawmakers at home campaigning. Several people who were among the thousands around the Capitol on Jan. 6 are now running for congressional office, some with Trump’s backing. Police officers who fought the mob filled the hearing room's front row.

The House panel warned that the insurrection at the Capitol was not an isolated incident but a warning of the fragility of the nation’s democracy in the post-Trump era.

“None of this is normal,” Cheney said.

Along with interviews, the committee is drawing on the trove of 1.5 million pages of documents it received from the Secret Service, including an email from Dec. 11, 2020, the day the Supreme Court rejected one of the main lawsuits Trump’s team had brought against the election results.

“Just fyi. POTUS is pissed,” the Secret Service message said.

White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, recalled Trump being “fired up” about the court’s ruling.

Trump told Meadows “something to the effect of: ‘I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing. Figure it out,’” Hutchinson told the panel in a recorded interview.

Thursday's session served as a closing argument for the panel’s two Republican lawmakers, Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who have essentially been shunned by Trump and their party and will not be returning in the new Congress. Cheney lost her primary election, and Kinzinger decided not to run.

The committee, having conducted more than 1,000 interviews and obtained countless documents, has produced a sweeping probe of Trump’s activities from his defeat in the November election to the Capitol attack.

🎥 Jan. 6 panel shows startling new video ahead of election

Jack Lloyd Mace, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born November 26, 1944, in Sterling, to Lloyd Valentine and Violet Sophia (Wibbeler) Mace.

Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962. He then attended Bethel College, and Mennonite Biblical Seminary earning his master’s degree. Jack worked as a draftsman, photographer, and several construction companies. However, his favorite job was being a substitute teacher for local school districts.

Jack was an artist, he enjoyed making paintings, drawings, and woodwork. His biggest passion was helping people, especially those facing adversity. Jack helped start Interfaith Housing and Community Services, in Hutchinson, and with special education classes at Hutchinson High School. Jack never knew a stranger and was quite the jokester, he enjoyed cracking jokes with the staff caring for him during his final days.

Jack was a loving husband, father and a very active member of First Mennonite Church, in Hutchinson.

On June 14, 1964, he married the love of his life, Deanna Klaassen at Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Jack is survived by: his wife, Deanna Mace of Hutchinson; sons, Brandon Mace of Wichita, and Brian Mace of Arlington, TX; brothers, Eugene (Sally) Mace of Peoria, IL, and Glenn (Marilee) Mace of Sterling; sister, Wanda Hart of Norman, OK; and a sister-in-law, Andrea Mace of Junction City.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Naomi Phinney; brothers, Alvin Mace and his wife Martha, and Ron Mace. &nbsp;

Jack Lloyd Mace, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born November 26, 1944, in Sterling, to Lloyd Valentine and Violet Sophia (Wibbeler) Mace.Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962. He then attended Bethel College, and Mennonite Biblical Seminary earning his master’s degree. Jack worked as a draftsman, photographer, and several construction companies. However, his favorite job was being a substitute teacher for local school districts.Jack was an artist, he enjoyed making paintings, drawings, and woodwork. His biggest passion was helping people, especially those facing adversity. Jack helped start Interfaith Housing and Community Services, in Hutchinson, and with special education classes at Hutchinson High School. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Jan. 6 committee voted unanimously Thursday to subpoena Donald Trump, demanding the former president's personal testimony as it unveiled startling new video from his closest aides describing his multi-part plan to overturn his 2020 election loss that resulted in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">the assault on the U.S. Capitol</a>.

“We must seek the testimony under oath of January Sixth's central player,” said Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the committee’s vice chair.

Trump is almost certain to fight the subpoena and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-mar-a-lago-donald-trump-government-and-politics-ap-top-news-14a7106b99130bb6e3ffaafc845e268f">decline to testify</a>. Spokesman Taylor Budowich in tweets accused panel members of “partisan theatrics” and said, “Pres Trump will not be intimidate by their meritless rhetoric or un-American actions.”

In the committee's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-elections-democracy-government-and-politics-6f302d624f539504339dc48d938eb6e0">10th public session</a>, just weeks before the congressional midterm elections, the panel summed up Trump’s “staggering betrayal" of his oath of office. With vivid new details and evidence, including from the former president's Cabinet secretaries and U.S. Secret Service, the panel showed Trump was told repeatedly by those around him that the election was over, yet he still orchestrated the far-reaching effort to stop Biden from taking office. Several former aides testified that Trump had said privately that he knew he had lost to Biden.

In other striking new video, the panel showed previously unseen footage of congressional leaders phoning officials for help during Capitol siege.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer can be seen talking to governors in neighboring Virginia and Maryland. Later it shows Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and other GOP leaders as the group asks Trump's acting attorney general for help.

“They’re breaking the law in many different ways — quite frankly at the instigation of the president of the United States,” Pelosi is heard saying at one point. “Do you believe this?” she exclaims.

The video comes from a documentary being produced by Pelosi’s daughter, according to two people familiar with the matter and granted anonymity to discuss it.

Earlier, in never-before-seen Secret Service messages, the panel produced evidence that extremist groups provided the muscle in the fight for Trump’s presidency, planning weeks before the attack to send a violent force to Washington.

“None of this is normal or acceptable or lawful in a republic,” Cheney declared.

“There is no defense that Donald Trump was duped or irrational. No president can defy the rule of law and act this way in a constitutional republic, period.”

Statements from Thompson and Cheney were laden with language frequently seen in criminal indictments. Both lawmakers described Trump as “substantially” involved in the events of Jan. 6. Cheney said Trump had acted in a “premeditated” way.

To illustrate what it said were “purposeful lies,” the committee juxtaposed repeated instances in which top administration officials recounted telling Trump the actual facts with clips of him repeating the exact opposite at his pre-riot rally at the Ellipse on Jan. 6.

The committee may well make a decision on whether to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department.

Thursday's hearing opened at a mostly empty Capitol complex, with most lawmakers at home campaigning for reelection. Several people who were among the thousands around the Capitol on Jan. 6 are now running for congressional office, some with Trump’s backing. Police officers who fought the mob filled the hearing room's front row.

In one recorded interview, former White House official Alyssa Farah Griffin said that Trump looked up at a television and said, “Can you believe I lost to this (expletive) guy?"

The committee is also drawing on the trove of 1.5 million documents it received from the Secret Service, including an email from Dec. 11, 2020, the day the Supreme Court rejected one of the main lawsuits Trump’s team had brought against the election results.

“Just fyi. POTUS is pissed,” the Secret Service wrote, according to documents obtained by the committee.

White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, recalled Trump as being “livid” and “fired up” about the court's ruling.

Trump told Meadows “something to the effect of: ‘I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing. Figure it out,."

Cabinet members including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General William Barr and Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia also said in interviews shown at the hearing that they believed that once the legal avenues had been exhausted, that should have been the end of Trump's efforts to remain in power.

“In my view, that was the end of the matter," Barr said of the Dec. 14 Electoral College vote.

But rather than the end of Trump's efforts to stay in power, the committee signaled it was only the beginning — as the president summoned the crowd to Washington for a rally to fight the election on Jan. 6.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Operation: Blackbird, a celebration focusing on the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is this weekend. The planes flew three times the speed of sound at the edge of space. Flown from 1964-1990, they were used for reconnaissance and for engineering and flight tests. In 1995, Hutchinson residents watched as an entire addition to the Cosmosphere was constructed around a flown SR-71.

"There are going to be sixteen honored guests who were the pilots, reconnaissance officers, so they always flew as a team, the pilot and then the RSO, who was part navigator, mostly photographer and then, their maintenance crews and a historian from Skunk Works," said Mimi Meredith with Cosmosphere. "He is now at Virgin Galactic. It's just an amazing lineup."

Festivities begin with a meet and greet in Cosmosphere’s Grand Lobby under the SR-71 on Friday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. then there is a full slate of Saturday events.

"It all begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in our lobby," Meridith said. "Also, in the Fee Family classrooms. In the Fee Family classroom, there will be a panel discussion with a pilot and an RSO officer, some maintenance crew members and that will all be moderated. Steve Justice will also be a part of that panel. He's the Skunk Works historian."

The name "Skunk Works" and the skunk design are now registered trademarks of the Lockheed Martin Corporation, who were the innovators of the next generation of aircraft for decades, including the SR-71 Blackbird. The crew members will also be giving back to the next generation while they are in town.

"We do have another private event that I'm really excited about," Meridith said. "This is for area college students. We'll be having folks come from WSU Tech and students from KU school of engineering, our own Hutchinson Community College and possibly K-State Salina on Friday evening to have dinner under the Blackbird with this team."

Operation: Blackbird this weekend at Cosmosphere

Pamela Louise Shopteese, 66, passed away October 9, 2022, surrounded by the ones who loved her most, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, after an unexpected illness. As she had been there for them at their first breath, they were there for her at her last. She was born October 8, 1956, in Pratt, to Dean Austin and Linda Louise (Krob) Tregellas.

Pamela graduated from Pratt High School in 1974, and in 1999, she earned her nursing degree. In 1981, she earned her Travel and Transportation Certificate from Parks College in Denver. She worked as a travel agent for many years. Pamela was currently working as a nurse for the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. She loved sewing, quilting, and crafts of any kind; passions she shared with her mother. Pamela enjoyed gardening, even though she would laughingly admit that she did not have a green thumb. More than anything she loved her daughters and granddaughters. Pamela and her daughters loved to go on girls’ trips to the casino and to see concerts. She was so proud of her daughters and never shy in telling others about them. Pamela loved life and never let anything get her down.

She is survived by: daughters, Nicole Shopteese, Wichita, Jessica Chadwick (Travis), Derby; granddaughters, Emily Barlow, Grace Chadwick; sisters, Arlene Swingle, Janell Ryan (Randy); and nephews, Asa Swingle, Rey Lopez, and Kyle Lopez.

Pamela was preceded in death by: her parents; and nephew, Cody Swingle.

Funeral service will be 11 am Monday, October 17, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary. Family will greet friends from 10 to 11 am, prior to the service. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 1 pm to 8 pm on Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team had a rough night offensively and the Butler Grizzlies took advantage in a 3-0 Jayhawk West sweep of Blue Dragons on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons lost 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 to the Grizzlies in the first of two meetings.

Hutchinson had hits four-match winning streak snapped and falls to 22-9 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk West. Butler improves to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in the league.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons play host to Colby at 3 p.m. on Saturday for Parents Day.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .227-.099, hitting .000 in the first set. The Dragons out-blocked Butler 8-4.

Freshman Taniya Golden had a match-high 13 kills on .258 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. She also had two solo blocks and three total blocks.&nbsp;

Sophomore Sophie Connor, sophomore Baylee Miller and freshman Anna Dean had five kills each.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 18 assists with a service ace and three digs. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 11 assists.

The Dragons narrowed the gap to 15-11 on a Blondie Penaflor kill. Kelly and Carrie Roe combine for seven kills in the set and the Grizzlies won 25-17SET 2: The second set was back and forth with five lead changes and 11 ties. The Blue Dragons led 20-17 after a Miller kill and Butler attack error. The Grizzled then ran off eight unanswered points to stun the Dragons, which were out-hit .240-.161 in the second set.SET 3: Hutchinson trailed 17-13 after an Aven kill, but scored four straight to tie the set after a Golden kill make it 17-all. Another Golden kill tied the set at 19 and a Connor kill gave the Dragons a 21-20 lead. Butler got kills on two rallies to take the lead. Penaflor tied the set at 22-all with a kill. Trailing 24-22, the Dragons fought off one match point with a Dean kill, but Roe’s kill off the block closed out the match for the Grizzlies.
