Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 1st and North Walnut.

The First Methodist Episcopalian Church was dedicated in 1875 at 101 E. First Ave. and cost $5,200. The Rev. Hiram Buck officiated for a membership of 125. The first photo shows that church building in about 1900.

A new impressive building at 101 E. 1st was dedicated in March of 1908. The second photo shows that building right after opening in 1909.

The membership had grown to 1,100. The third photo shows this building again in 1910.

Another larger church was constructed, only now formally called just First Methodist Church. The fourth photo shows that building sometime later along with the Soldier &amp; Sailor Monument.

The fifth photo shows the now-named First United Methodist Church today still at 101 E. First Ave., celebrating its 150-year-continued presence on the same 1st and Walnut corner with current pastor Mik King.

📷 Throwback Thursday: First United Methodist Church - Vol. 134

A former employee of the Nickerson School District has been arrested on child sex crime charges according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan Stoecklein, a former coach in the district, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He faces charges of sexual exploitation of a child under 18 and attempted unlawful sexual relations.

A criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Reno County District Court alleges that Stoecklein promoted a performance involving sexually explicit conduct of a minor. 

The complaint also accuses him of&nbsp; "Unlawfully and feloniously attempt(ing) to engage in consensual sexual intercourse and lewd fondling or touching with a person who was a student enrolled at the school where the offender was employed, to wit: Nickerson High School, who was 16 or more years of age, and who was not married to the offender, while the offender was a teacher or other person in a position of authority, by completing an overt act towards the perpetration of the crime, done by a person who intended to commit such crime but failed in the perpetration thereof or was prevented or intercepted in executing such crime."

The incidents allegedly occurred between Jan. 1 and March 24, 2025.

Stoecklein is being held on a $120,000 bond. His first appearance in court is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Former Nickerson coach arrested 

The Hutchinson City Council addressed a full agenda during its Tuesday evening meeting, taking action on unsafe properties, subdivision regulations, and long-term infrastructure planning.

Following public hearings on 10 properties deemed dangerous and unsafe, the council voted to condemn three structures located at 806 North Plum, 22 West 5th, and 411 South Main. A fourth property at 211 East Fourth was also condemned, but city staff noted the owner had already secured a demolition permit.

One property, 1321 East Fourth, remains on the city’s watch list. Although still considered hazardous, the city will monitor progress rather than immediately pursue condemnation.

The remaining five properties—401 and 405 South Main, 2100 North Jackson, 3001 East Fourth, and 1221 East Fourth—were tabled until the Oct. 7 council meeting.

In a separate matter, the council narrowly approved a replat of the Plum Creek subdivision, allowing sidewalks on only one side of the street. The 3-2 vote saw Councilmembers Jon Richardson, Steve Garza, and Scott Meggers in favor, while Mayor Stacy Goss and Councilmember Greg Fast opposed.&nbsp;

City regulations typically require sidewalks on both sides in new subdivisions, but the Planning Commission granted a variance for Plum Creek. The replat also revises pedestrian and utility easements near Plum Creek Elementary.

City Manager Enrico Villegas reminded the council that a 2024 development agreement with Strawn Homes had promised sidewalks on both sides. Developer Jim Strawn cited higher-than-expected infrastructure costs as the reason for the change, noting home prices could range from $225,000 to $400,000, with some assistance from Reno County incentives.

The council also discussed timing for a proposed 0.75% sales tax referendum, with Villegas recommending a spring ballot instead of November to allow for more thorough preparation.

In other business, the council repealed an ordinance restricting truck traffic on Apple Lane, following the completion of a new bridge capable of supporting heavy vehicles.

The council rejected both proposals submitted for Memorial Hall. One was deemed incomplete, while the other—a proposed $10 million “Unconvention Hall” backed by local business owners and Councilmember Richardson—was considered too expensive amid current budget constraints.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 19.

Council condemns three properties, rejects Memorial Hall RFPs

TOPEKA, Kan. — Hutchinson native and current Washburn University men's basketball coach, Brett Ballard, has been named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA) Four-Year Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

Ballard led the Ichabods to the NCAA Division II Final Four, before falling to eventual national champion, Nova Southeastern in the semifinals. The Ichabods finished the season with a 30-4 record, going 17-2 in the MIAA, and a perfect 16-0 inside of Lee Arena.

Ballard finished up his eighth season in Topeka and guided the Ichabods to the MIAA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Central Region.

He is a 1998 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He then played one season at Cowley College and one at HutchCC, where he graduated in 2000. Ballard then played his final two seasons at Kansas under Roy Williams.

🏀 Ballard named KBCA Four-Year Coach of the Year

With a strong nucleus of returning talent and a culture built on consistency, Trinity Catholic enters the 2025 football season prepared to compete in a rugged Heart of America League and Class 1A District 7.

“We are extremely excited about the upcoming 2025 season,” said head coach Jordan Bell, who begins his 12th season at the helm of the Celtics. “As a coaching staff, we are looking forward to coaching a football team that is eager to learn and work extremely hard.”

Trinity is coming off a 4-6 season in 2024, which included the program’s eighth straight playoff appearance. The Celtics will bring back eight offensive starters and nine on defense, along with 13 total returning lettermen.

The projected 26-man roster is the program’s smallest in several years, due in part to a small sophomore class. But Bell is confident the team’s core leadership and work ethic will carry it forward.

“Leadership will need to continue to grow with the senior and junior classes,” Bell said. “Continued development of underclassmen will remain a priority to sustain the success of the football program in future years.”

Returning on offense are senior quarterback Drew Dechant, wide receivers Kaid McElgunn and Sam Vogel, tight end Bentyn Chastain, and linemen Eli Bigger, Isaac Hammersmith, Lucas Griffith, and Gage Schroeder. The Celtics will again operate from multiple formations with an emphasis on balance.

“The offense will continue to operate out of multiple formations with an emphasis on a 50/50 run/pass percentage,” Bell said.

Defensively, Trinity will field an experienced group expected to play with intensity and purpose. Nine starters return, including linebackers Chastain, Griffith, and Luke Kerns, and defensive backs Dechant, Roberto Guerrero, and McElgunn.

“The defensive unit will play fast, physical and with great effort,” Bell said.

Senior Drew Dechant is also expected to handle punting duties, while McElgunn returns as a primary return specialist. Placekicking duties are still to be determined.

The 2025 schedule will once again challenge the Celtics, with four opponents, Sedgwick, Conway Springs, Medicine Lodge, and Sterling, having all won at least one playoff game a year ago. Trinity opens the season Sept. 5 at home against Inman.

The program continues to benefit from its commitment to year-round strength development, including Zero Hour and summer contact camps.

“With nine full years of Zero Hour under our belt, the overall strength of the football program is getting where it needs to be,” Bell said.

Reno County is moving forward with plans to consolidate its eight rural fire districts into a single countywide fire district effective Jan. 1, 2026. The move is aimed at improving service equity, simplifying budgeting, and creating a more efficient emergency response network across the county.&nbsp;

“Every resident in Reno County currently falls under a fire district,” Emergency Manager Adam Weishaar said. “But the boundaries have been invisible barriers. With consolidation, we’ll be able to move equipment more easily and ensure equal service for everyone, regardless of where they live.”&nbsp;

All eight rural districts currently operate with volunteer firefighters and maintain their own mill levies, ranging from 7 to nearly 20 mills. Under the new plan, residents would be served by a unified “Consolidated Fire District 1” with a single, uniform tax rate.&nbsp;

County Administrator Randy Partington said the consolidation would also streamline the budgeting process, eliminating the need to manage eight separate budgets. “This allows us to look at the fire service as a whole and plan more strategically for equipment and personnel,” he said.&nbsp;

Residents will soon receive revenue neutral rate (RNR) notices in the mail, which will outline the proposed changes. Partington clarified that while the notices may show two mill levies—one for the old district and one for the new—residents will only be taxed under the new consolidated rate. The dual listing is required for legal and historical purposes.&nbsp;

There is still a small protest window for residents who may wish to opt out of the consolidated district. If a specific fire district formally withdraws, the county will maintain a separate 2026 budget for that area. However, officials believe full participation is likely.&nbsp;

Weishaar&nbsp;also updated listeners on two ongoing fire station construction projects in Turon and Nickerson. The Turon station is nearing completion, with doors installed and interior work underway. The Nickerson station is just a few weeks behind. Both buildings are identical and are being built by the same construction crew.&nbsp;

In a notable shift, the&nbsp;Weishaar said the county is also proposing the addition of a capital line item in the fire district budget—something it has never done before.&nbsp;He said this would allow the county to begin gradually replacing aging fire apparatus, some of which date back to the 1970s. “The national standard recommends replacing fire trucks every 25 years. We’re hoping this capital plan helps us meet those standards by 2050.”&nbsp;

A public hearing on the budget and revenue neutral rate is scheduled for the Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on Sept. 10th. At that meeting, the commission must formally adopt the mill levy and finalize the 2026 budget. Once adopted, the budget will be submitted to the state.&nbsp;

The next meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is set for Aug. 13th.&nbsp;

Weishaar, Partington talk fire district consolidation, 2026 budget

As students gear up for a new academic year at Hutchinson Community College, President Dr. Tricia Paramore is reflecting on a successful first year at the helm — and setting the tone for continued growth and accessibility in the year ahead.&nbsp;

Paramore, a longtime faculty member and administrator who began her career at HutchCC in 1996 as a biology instructor, stepped into the presidency on July 1, 2024. Now entering her 30th year with the college, she said her first year in the role was steady, productive and fulfilling.&nbsp;

“It could have been really big ups and big downs, but it wasn’t,” Paramore said. “It was really great. I’ve got a great team and our staff is amazing. Our customer service philosophy is to bring your A-game every day, be responsive and help people feel at home.”&nbsp;

That team-focused approach seems to be paying off. HutchCC celebrated another record graduating class in 2024 with approximately 1,000 graduates. Of those, 475 students crossed the stage in May, a moment Paramore called a “great time of celebration.”&nbsp;

The college also awarded more than 1,700 degrees and certificates last year — accounting for 11% of all credentials earned at Kansas community colleges.&nbsp;

“That's saying something,” Paramore said. “It speaks to the strength and accessibility of our programs.”&nbsp;

Enrollment for the upcoming fall semester is currently trending about 6% higher than last year, although Paramore noted those numbers fluctuate daily leading up to the start of classes on Aug. 20. Some specialized programs, such as physical therapy assistant training, are already underway.&nbsp;

Expanding Technical and Workforce Pathways&nbsp;

In line with changing workforce needs, HutchCC continues to expand its technical and certificate programs. Among the newest is a John Deere program in partnership with PrairieLand Partners. The two-year program, based at South Campus and the PrairieLand facility on K-61, will offer students industry-specific training, tool allowances and job placement upon completion.&nbsp;

Paramore added, “These students are going to have jobs when they finish.”&nbsp;

The push to support technical training reflects a broader shift away from the traditional four-year college track.&nbsp;

“College looks different for everyone,” Paramore said. “When you and I were in school, the four-year degree was the norm. Now, some students want to go straight into the workforce with a certificate or associate degree — and that’s great, too.”&nbsp;

Strong Presence in Area High Schools&nbsp;

HutchCC also continues to play a major role in dual-credit education across the region. Last year, nearly 2,300 high school students in 33 schools across Reno, McPherson, Harvey, and part of Rice County earned college credits through HutchCC.&nbsp;

“These students can graduate from high school already two or three steps ahead,” Paramore said. Many of the courses are part of the state’s Systemwide Transfer program, allowing for seamless credit transfer to Kansas universities.&nbsp;

Technical classes like welding, machining, auto body, and electrician training are also offered in high schools, supported by Senate Bill 155, which covers tuition for qualifying technical courses.&nbsp;

A Network of Campuses and Partnerships&nbsp;

In addition to its main campus in Hutchinson, HutchCC maintains outreach centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as numerous program-specific sites within Hutchinson — including facilities for barbering, cosmetology, fire science and agriculture diesel mechanics.&nbsp;

Paramore emphasized that HutchCC’s broad reach and partnerships make education both affordable and accessible.&nbsp;

“Eighty-six percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance,” she said. “And students who take courses in high school at the reduced tuition rate can even get reimbursed if they attend HutchCC full time after graduation. It’s almost like getting two classes for the price of one.”&nbsp;

With momentum building, Paramore is focused on continuing to meet community needs through high-quality education, responsive workforce training and strong student support.&nbsp;

“As a president, it’s not about me — it’s about how we serve our students, our community and the state,” she said. “And that’s what we’re committed to doing, every day.”&nbsp;

Paramore reflects on first year, talks HutchCC success

Following a 5-5 season that fell short of the Bullpups' high standards, McPherson enters the 2025 campaign with a refined identity, explosive skill talent, and a challenge to its younger players: grow up fast.

“We have the smallest senior class this season that we have ever had,” said head coach Jace Pavlovich, who enters his 11th year leading the Bullpups. “But what we have are quality players. We have a chance to be really good but will need help from some sophomores. They will need to mature quickly.”

Pavlovich has built McPherson into one of the most consistent programs in Class 4A, posting an 84-27 record as head coach and contributing to 156 career wins on staff. From 2017 to 2022, the Bullpups averaged over 10 wins per season. But after two straight seasons outside the state quarterfinals, the 2025 team is focused on regaining its postseason edge.

McPherson returns six starters on both sides of the ball and 19 total lettermen. The Spread-I offense is led by senior playmaker Ashton Malm, one of the top receivers in the state, and a supporting cast of experienced skill players including Izyck Puhalla (WR), Bo Barkley (TE), and Dane Becker (TB).

“We are returning one of the best receivers in the state in Ashton Malm and will rely on him heavily,” Pavlovich said. “However, we have a ton of offensive skill players that have the ability to have a breakout year.”

The offensive line will rely on senior Krayton Byrd and Charlie Barrow, but younger players will need to rise into starting roles. A three-way quarterback competition is underway, with upperclassmen vying for the starting spot.

“We have confidence in all of them,” Pavlovich said.

On defense, McPherson is transitioning into a simplified 4-2-5 scheme to emphasize speed and confidence. Returning starters include Jayren Stutzman (DE), Takoda Linn (DB), Nolan Pearcy (LB), Carter Bengston (DB), Dane Becker (DB), and Keaton Crane (C), who also anchors the offensive line.

“Defensively, we will need to cause confusion and use our tremendous team speed,” Pavlovich said. “We need to improve on our team tackling this season as we missed far too many tackles last year.”

Despite roster turnover, McPherson’s expectations remain the same: push deep into November and challenge for a 4A title.

“It has always been about reaching our potential as a team,” Pavlovich said.

A celebration of Kansas’ rural roots and mechanical heritage is rolling back into downtown Hutchinson as Antique Tractor Preservation Day returns for its second year on Friday, August 22. The event, spearheaded by Michael Hinton, founder of TalkingTractors.com, aims to honor agricultural history and engage the broader community with vintage tractor culture.

What began as a passion project for Hinton—who describes himself as “married into tractors”—has grown into a full-fledged statewide observance. “Last year was our inaugural event, and the support has just been phenomenal—from the city, the state, and even internationally,” Hinton said.

The highlight of the day will be a large display of restored antique tractors encircling the U.S. Post Office at 128 E. First Ave. This year’s lineup will include a wider range of makes, models, and colors than last year’s farmall-centric showing. The Great Plains Antique Tractor Club, of which Hinton is a member, plays a major role in coordinating local exhibits and tractor pulls throughout Reno County and beyond.

"It's like a car show—but for tractors,” Hinton explained. “They’re shined up, restored, and ready to show off. And for many families, each one has a story.”

That storytelling element is central to TalkingTractors.com, the website Hinton launched in early 2023 as a revival of a project he started over a decade ago. The platform features stories, photos, and updates about antique tractors, with the goal of preserving Kansas’ rural history.

One unique feature of the event is the special Antique Tractor Preservation Day postmark available at the Hutchinson Post Office. Created in cooperation with USPS, the pictorial cancellation stamp features bold lettering for “Kansas” and “USA,” and has attracted national and international interest. Last year, postmark requests came from all 50 states, China, and Germany.

In recognition of the event’s cultural value, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a formal proclamation for the second year in a row, and the Kansas House of Representatives passed Resolution HR 6011, designating Antique Tractor Preservation Day as an official state observance. The City of Hutchinson is expected to issue a local proclamation as well.

Antique Tractor Preservation Day set for Aug. 22

City staff is recommending rejection of redevelopment proposals for Memorial Hall, following a months-long process involving community input and evaluation by a team of city officials.

The future of Memorial Hall was first discussed at the Feb. 18, 2025, Hutchinson City Council meeting, when staff proposed demolishing the aging building to create a public plaza connecting Avenue A Park to George Pyle Park. In response, councilmembers requested that staff develop a Request for Proposals (RFP) for potential private redevelopment instead.

The RFP, developed in collaboration with the Hutchinson Recreation Commission and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, was designed to ensure alignment with community goals and maximize the feasibility of implementation. Proposals were due July 7, following a pre-submittal meeting on May 2.

Evaluation criteria included qualifications of the development team, financial capacity, timeline, viability, return to the city, and consistency with adopted city plans.

Two proposals were submitted: one from Dennis Edelman and Dr. Gordon Schultz, and another titled Unconvention Hall led by local entrepreneur Uriah Bueller.

City staff determined that the untitled proposal from Schultz and Edelman lacked a concrete plan, relying instead on examples of unrelated projects from other communities. The submission failed to address the required evaluation criteria, leading staff to recommend no further consideration.

The Unconvention Hall proposal envisioned a public-private partnership to support small businesses through various flexible spaces, including 60 to 80 “tiny studios.” While some aspects aligned with the city’s Downtown Master Plan and Memorial Hall Reuse Plan, staff cited significant concerns regarding its feasibility, financial projections, and the team’s lack of experience with similar developments.

The proposal projected over $10 million in capital improvements, funded through a mix of STAR Bonds, State Historic Tax Credits, city-issued bonds, and private investment. It also included a proposed $400,000 annual subsidy and projected studio rents of $1,000 per month—figures city staff found questionable and risky.

“Overall staff appreciated the creativity of the proposal,” the report states, “but has major concerns about the financial viability of the proposal and the risk associated with the initial investment and the long-term subsidy.”

As a result, staff is recommending that the City Council reject both proposals.

The item will be presented for formal council consideration at Tuesday evening's city council meeting, with a motion recommended to reject all submissions received in response to the RFP for the revitalization of Memorial Hall.

After a 4-6 campaign in 2024, the Halstead Dragons are counting on a mix of returning experience, young talent, and positional flexibility to take a step forward in the 2025 season.

“We are very excited to get this group to work this summer,” said head coach Derek Racette, who enters his third season at the helm. “It will be an exciting year and we cannot wait to get started!”

Halstead, a member of the Central Kansas League, returns six starters on offense and six on defense, led by junior fullback Reece Carmichael, who rushed for 520 yards and five touchdowns on 95 carries last season. Senior Noah Diehl also returns as a dual-threat on both sides of the ball. Diehl caught six passes for 131 yards, intercepted four passes as a free safety, and earned All-League honors as a defensive back and return specialist.

“Our ability to be multiple on offense and defense will be a major key this year,” Racette said. “As well as our ability to play multiple kids at each position.”

Carmichael (5-7, 180), Diehl (5-8, 165), senior running back/outside linebacker Brock Odendahl (5-8, 190), and sophomore running back Edric Zorn (6-0, 200) return to anchor the backfield in the Dragons’ Flexbone offense. On the line, senior Logan Overton (6-1, 195) and junior kicker Carlos Martinez (5-11, 160), a first-team All-League selection, also return.

Defensively, Halstead will line up in a 4-2-5 scheme. Carmichael, Diehl, Odendahl, Zorn, Swift, and Overton lead the charge. Carmichael notched a team-high 97 total tackles, including 68 assists and 29 solo stops last season. Overton contributed seven tackles for loss, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.

“We will be younger this year,” Racette said, “Our players got a lot of experience last year due to injuries.”

Among the underclassmen to watch are sophomore quarterback/defensive back Daminen Whitlock, sophomore lineman/linebacker Cruise Davison, junior linemen Hudson Harrington and Noah Brantley, and junior wideouts Kingston Heck and Jackson Wendling. Several freshmen, including Hudson Hawkins and Dacen Dedman, are also expected to contribute early.

“We have five seniors this year and their leadership and guidance will be critical,” Racette said. “As well as leadership from some of our younger players.”

The 2025 season will be a test of growth and grit for the Pratt Greenbacks, who are replacing a highly successful senior class but return a fast and determined core under seventh-year head coach Brent Hoelting.

“How we progress up front will be a key indicator for how our season goes,” said Hoelting, who holds a 28-27 record at Pratt and is 65-42 overall in his head coaching career. “Our attention to detail and work ethic will have to be very good for us to be successful.”

The Greenbacks return three offensive starters and five on defense from last year’s squad, and while they’ll be smaller than in recent years, Hoelting believes the team’s speed and skill position talent will keep them competitive.

Junior quarterback Cresten Pore headlines the returners on offense, along with tight end Arley Morrell, a recent Colorado State commit, and offensive lineman Josiah Schmidt. Morrell brings athleticism and leadership to both sides of the ball as a hybrid playmaker at TE/DE.

“We will have more speed on the offensive side of the ball than we have had since I have been here,” Hoelting said. “But we will be by far smaller than we have ever been.”

Defensively, the Greenbacks will rely on their aggression and pursuit. Linebackers Luke Gatlin, Kyler Barker, and Gavin Rupe, along with strong safety Caleb Strong, give Pratt an experienced core that will fly to the football. Hoelting acknowledged the team will be undersized up front but hopes to overcome it with “aggression and speed.”

New contributors expected to make an impact include Cade Liggett (RB/LB), Hudson Titus (WR/DB), and Landon Demuth (WR/DE), all showing signs of being Friday-night ready.

“We have a bunch of young kids working very hard for a chance to play on Friday nights,” Hoelting said. “We play in a really tough league and district, and we look forward to getting a chance to compete in the fall.”

The Greenbacks also bring in a new voice on defense with Kendall Miller taking over as defensive coordinator. He joins a veteran staff including Parker Titus (DBs), Jake Eisenhauer (WRs), Jason Gallagher (DL), and Tyler Strong (OL).

Reins of Hope, a nonprofit therapeutic riding center, has been improving the lives of individuals with disabilities since its founding in 1994. Located on the east side of Hutchinson, the program is dedicated to enhancing the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of riders through horseback therapy.

“We are a therapeutic riding program, and we belong to the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, or PATH,” said Jane Harder, the organization’s director. “We work with individuals with all types of disabilities, from physical to mental and emotional challenges, to help improve their quality of life.”

 </figure>“We’ve seen a lot of success with our clients who struggle with mental health issues,” Harder said. “Therapeutic riding helps with anxiety, depression, and socialization, and it gives them a sense of calm.”The center's approach goes beyond just riding; it integrates a team effort with parents, teachers, and other health professionals to tailor lessons to each rider's needs. Harder pointed out that the horses themselves play a crucial role in the therapy, acting as gentle partners in the process.“Horses simulate the human gait, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with physical disabilities, like cerebral palsy,” she said. “The rhythm of the horse’s movements helps the rider’s muscles relax and develop a more natural stride.”<figure>

 </figure>The therapeutic horseback riding lessons are structured to offer more than just physical benefits. They also provide emotional healing, often without the rider even realizing it.“It’s not just about riding the horse,” Harder explained. “The goal is to have fun while getting therapy at the same time. The horses do much of the work, and it’s a great bonding experience for the riders.”The program also works closely with local school districts, foster care programs, and adult care centers to provide services. Students and individuals from these organizations are encouraged to participate in therapeutic riding sessions, which are designed to meet the unique needs of each participant.While the center has received significant community support, financial assistance and volunteers remain crucial to its continued success. Reins of Hope charges a minimal fee for its services and never turns away a rider due to financial constraints. Instead, the nonprofit relies on grants, donations, and volunteers to sustain its operations.<figure>

 </figure>The center’s horse care costs are another significant expense, with veterinary care, feed, and routine health maintenance totaling approximately $2,000 per horse annually.
