HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School is on the home stretch of fundraising for its childcare facility expansion.

"The historic fire station that's on our campus, we purchased that in 2012, and it's served a variety of purposes over the last several years at the school," said Dr. John Walker with Central Christian School. "We've used it as a industrial arts facility. We've used it most recently as a weightlifting facility and maintenance shop, and by the Lord's kindness, we just completed a brand new 1,600 square foot weightlifting facility that we should be moving into this summer. And so our students will be moving into there. What will happen with that fire station is that we'll actually be remodeling it and adding six classrooms to the east of that fire station, right off of 30th Street. And so we will be doubling our capacity. Right now we can service about 50 children, by the time that we complete this project, we'll be right around 100 children served at our childcare facility."

The new facility will be for birth to school age.

"Children that are six weeks old all the way through school age," Walker said. "That could be five years old, six years old, depending on when their birthday falls and when they enroll in kindergarten. Right now we do toddler through school age, which is one year old or walking up through school age. And so we're actually looking forward to expanding that to take those families who need childcare from infant care, which would be six weeks old through school age.&nbsp;I believe that the requirements are that you can have one teacher per three pupils when it's that young. So essentially your capacity to operate infant care is more challenging because you can't watch as many children and rightfully so."

Most of the money has been raised for the expansion at this point.

"By God's grace, we are currently sitting at 75% given or committed to this project, which is such a blessing," Walker said. "That comes by way of lots of help with the accelerator grant that many other institutions received. We got a $336,000 grant for that. And additionally, we had several large commitments, several large gifts. So to date, total committed or given today is $1,595,000. Our total cost of the project is gonna be around $2.1 million. So our gap is just north of $500,000 that we have left to fundraise."

Childcare facility expansion money coming in at CCS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South‐Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) in Bel Aire, KS administers the federally and local funded Housing Resurgence Program in Reno County. Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services, Inc. (Interfaith) in Hutchinson, KS administers the local funded Reno County Housing Impact Plan (RCHIP). SCKEDD, in partnership with Interfaith, provides assistance with the Reno County Housing Impact Program.

A mandatory bidder’s tour will take place on July 16, 2024, beginning at 8:00 a.m. in Hutchinson.

SCKEDD seeking contractors for July 16 bid tour in Hutchinson

NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton's annual mill and overlay will begin this week with Medical Center Drive. 

The contractor, Pearson Construction, will begin milling off asphalt on Wednesday, July 10. City crews will do base pavement patching the following day, and then Pearson will begin the asphalt overlay. Pearson plans to work one lane at a time. They will use a flagging crew to stop traffic and flag drivers around the construction as needed. 

Medical Center Drive is expected to be completed in a week or less, weather permitting. 

The contractor will then begin mill and overlay on the following streets, in this order:• Quail Drive (Duncan to Meadowlark Lane)• Old Main (Southport Drive to Windward Drive)• Meadowbrook Drive (Anderson to Wheatridge)• SE 14th Street (Old Main to Pine)• SE 36th Street (Kansas to South Magnolia)

Pearson will deliver notices to adjacent property owners 48-72 hours in advance. Weather permitting, the work should be complete by the end of July.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TEFAP commodity distribution July 28

SALINE COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Kirsten D. A.&nbsp;Speilman, 24, Salina, was&nbsp;westbound on Water Well Road five miles Northeast of Gypsum.

The driver lost control of the pickup. It entered the south ditch, rolled and came to rest on the passenger side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Speilman to Salina Regional Health Center. A passenger in the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt and not injured, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after pickup rolls

STERLING, Kan. — The Sterling Community Theatre Troupe will take on the musical Gypsy for the second time. The group took Gypsy to the stage in 1997 with Betsy Dutton who played Gypsy Rose Lee.&nbsp;

"I wanted to take a crack at it again having had children and just also understanding life and pushy people like Rose a little more," Betsy said.&nbsp;

Her husband, Dennis Dutton is the director of Gypsy.&nbsp;

"It's loosely based on Gypsy Rose Lee," Dennis said. "Historically, she was one of America's foremost Burlesque performers and she was driven by her mother Rose and her sister June went on to become the movie star June Havoc and so she wrote her memoirs. Gypsy Rose Lee and those memoirs provide the basis for the show Gypsy."

Betsy said Rose tends to be an attractive character for actresses. Rose has been portrayed by Ethel Merman among other famous names.&nbsp;

“It's just a juicy role and that's what you have,” Betsy said. “Recently, Audrey McDonald is going to do it this fall and so actresses are attracted to the role because not only is she comedic and gets to sing, it's also a dramatic role too."&nbsp;

The cast features all ages including six grade school kids, a few high school students and Sterling College students.&nbsp;

“We love to choose shows that we think our audience will enjoy and that we've got the people in our small community and the people in Hutchinson and such who can maybe do the roles well and so we've been fortunate in doing some really fun shows,” Dennis said. “Some that have been very classic and familiar like Gypsy but also some new ones like Disaster. Like Curtains. Like Drowsy Chaperone and so we've had a great time doing those community endeavors around the 4th of July."&nbsp; Showtimes for Gypsy are July 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. and July 7 at 2 p.m. at the Betsy Dutton Theater in Sterling High School.&nbsp;

Gypsy takes stage in Sterling this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss is still concerned about the manufacturing sector across the Midwest.

"It's more moving sideways in terms of manufacturing, so I'm not real optimistic," Goss said as his latest survey was released this week. "There were, I guess, some things that were a little bit better. Exports were a little stronger than what we've seen, so I guess we could attribute some of the not-such-bad or not-weak numbers because of exports."

Companies are trying to shorten their supply chains and they are starting to see some success in that regard.

"We talked about reshoring," Goss said.&nbsp; "Of course, this is a big issue for the Biden administration. They've incentivized bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. internationally. About 50 percent of the companies, 48 percent actually, indicated they're doing more of their purchasing domestically. Of course, that's good news for the domestic economy. Now, only 60 percent said they brought all their purchasing or reshored 100 percent back to the U.S., so that was some good news."

However, those workers need places to live, and that seems to be where the rub is right now, at least nationally.

"We're seeing some numbers in real estate that are not very comforting," Goss said. "That's not so much for this part of the country, but inventories of houses on the market are rising dramatically, particularly in Florida, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, some real big issues there. So, the real estate sector, residential, has been moving solidly. Now, it's not so much. Commercial has been in trouble for some time now, and so real estate is going to be one of the cracks we're seeing in the economy ahead."

Goss says the real estate market cannot continue to price first time homebuyers out and continue to grow.

Goss still concerned about manufacturing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Raj Bhala, Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at KU Law says it is likely that elections all around the globe will have an impact on trade.

"We may see differences in trade law and trade policy depending on who wins the presidential election," Bhala said. " This year, in 2024, there are elections in about 90 countries, encompassing about 2 billion people. India just had its election. And there are elections in Canada, France, the UK, we've just seen them in Mexico, Bangladesh, Brazil."

As the world seems to take a rightward, populist turn generally, elections may have a greater impact than is typical.

"Different parties, we've seen this, for example, in France, have very different outlooks on openness to imports, on supporting through subsidies exports, on encouraging, inviting foreign direct investment, and certainly on immigration, which is a topic related to trade," Bhala said.

The other point is that how politicians run for office and how they run a parliament, or in America's case, an executive branch can vary widely.

"It's hard to predict concrete policy based on campaign rhetoric," Bhala said. "Here are a couple of possibilities. I think that whoever wins the election, I would expect that we will see a second CHIPS Act that may even be bigger than the first CHIPS Act, and the reason I say that is the strategic importance of artificial intelligence and the role that advanced CHIPS play in AI is ever more clear to all Americans, and certainly ones who are charged with dealing with AI issues in the government. It's vital that AI, chip technology related to AI, that the U.S. stays in the forefront of that. And that's probably going to mean another CHIPS Act. Now, it won't be labeled industrial policy, but that's pretty much what it is, American style."

The elections, as they unfold, will definitely be something that those who help goods and money move around the world will need to continue to watch. As an example, the far-right appears to have the upper hand in France with a second round of legislative elections due July 7.

McPherson holding Instagram/Threads event July 9

Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin joined the Wheat’s on Your Mind podcast this week to share his perspectives on the 2024 harvest, the new wheat export marketing year, Kansans serving as industry leaders and more.&nbsp;

No conversation with Gilpin can start in early July without commentary on harvest results. Talking with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations and host of the Wheat’s on Your Mind podcast, he commented that the phrase “better than expected” is the year’s common theme, but one that needs to be put into context.&nbsp;

“The fact that we are having a better crop in a lot of areas than we’ve had in the last couple of years, it is good to see,” Gilpin said.&nbsp;

He echoed farmer hopes from last winter of good prospects for harvest, having seen good stand establishment in the fall. But as the rains did not come for many, the crops started deteriorating through March, April and early May. As the combines started to roll, variability became the name of the game.&nbsp;

“Even within the same county and within miles of each other, you’re seeing pretty wide ranges in yields and overall performance from the wheat as it’s coming in,” Gilpin said. “That has to do with variety, whether somebody caught a rain, whether you were hit by a freeze or whether you’re seeing disease. This is one of those crops that have it all over.”&nbsp;

Gilpin and Harries both tipped their hats to wheat breeders and scientists for the genetics in today’s wheat varieties that allowed the crop to maximize the moisture it did receive - allowing farmers across the state to harvest fields they thought would not make it through the dry spell.&nbsp;

“We know that the genetics are better now than they were 10 years ago,” Gilpin said. “We know that farmers are implementing management practices that give the wheat crop a chance to have higher yield potential than we did a year ago. We just needed Mother Nature to cooperate.”&nbsp;

“We’re seeing that not just within the public varieties that are out there, but certainly the private varieties that are out there as well. It’s a real testament to the breeders, but then also the farmers that have worked to make that investment into those breeding programs.”

As Gilpin talks with Kansas producers, he’s listening for which of those public and private wheat varieties are performing well in test plots and farmers’ fields. One variety he’s on the lookout for is KS Bill Snyder - a new variety that will have limited seed available this fall for planting.&nbsp;

“With its disease package and yield potential, and with that name recognition, hopefully, it’ll be as worthwhile as that variety’s namesake,” Gilpin said, referring to K-State’s legendary football coach for which the new variety is named.&nbsp;

Gilpin and Harries also discussed the need for markets to cooperate to help farmers get the return on acre they need to maintain their operations - especially after emerging from a multi-year drought. The futures market has been rough on wheat, taking nearly a $1.50 break from the start of harvest, driven by harvest pressure, investment funds and global wheat market announcements.

“At the end of the day, you need that return per acre to ultimately define how good that wheat crop is for each of our producers,” Gilpin said. “Hopefully, if we do what we can, working with our breeding and research community to put those genetics in place, the capability of good yields can help out on that return per acre.”&nbsp;

Talking with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations and host of the Wheat’s on Your Mind podcast, he commented that the phrase “better than expected” is the year’s common theme, but one that needs to be put into context.&nbsp;“The fact that we are having a better crop in a lot of areas than we’ve had in the last couple of years, it is good to see,” Gilpin said.&nbsp;He echoed farmer hopes from last winter of good prospects for harvest, having seen good stand establishment in the fall. But as the rains did not come for many, the crops started deteriorating through March, April and early May. As the combines started to roll, variability became the name of the game.&nbsp;“Even within the same county and within miles of each other, you’re seeing pretty wide ranges in yields and overall performance from the wheat as it’s coming in,” Gilpin said. “That has to do with variety, whether somebody caught a rain, whether you were hit by a freeze or whether you’re seeing disease. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the corner of North Lorraine and East 1st.

In 1904, Nelson P. Stevens lived at 1501 E. 1st Ave. and was enough of a gardener to run a small nursery.

In 1906, he came up with a great idea: Since he had quite a bit of land available, he built a very large community swimming pool with amusements. The first photo shows the Stevens Swimming Ponds,  entertainment venue.

In 1908, he added a second smaller pool with a Toboggan Slide and called it "The Chute." The second photo shows the view from atop The Chute.

This feature would probably not pass insurance requirements in today's world. The third photo shows the height of The Chute.

This venture continued successfully until 1947.

In 1950, Don Baumhart, an ex-employee and the city electrical inspector, purchased the facility and renamed it Baumhart's and added two more pools. Baumhart's lasted until 1958, when the Moose Lodge bought the property.

For many years, the Moose Lodge ran an in-ground pool facility here. The fourth photo shows the 1401 E. 1st Ave. property today, still the Hutchinson Lodge #982 Loyal Order of Moose Inc. but with no pool attached any more.
