ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas&nbsp;— Super-fast fiber internet service will soon be available to hundreds of Arkansas City families and businesses, thanks to IdeaTek. 

The Buhler-based internet company will begin construction in August. By fall, IdeaTek will begin delivering unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second to the city’s first few neighborhoods. IdeaTek's 100-percent fiber investment of nearly $6 million will connect over 6,100 homes and businesses to fiber. 

Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth. While some providers use the term “Fiber-Powered” to hide the fact that they are using outdated technology, IdeaTek invests in true fiber connections to offer symmetrical upload and download speeds, enhanced reliability and scalable capacities for the Ark City area. IdeaTek also provides more affordable pricing compared to current, often less reliable, service providers in the city.

IdeaTek expands to Ark City

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 4th Avenue and North Pershing.

In 1885, S.M. Arter and L. Ardery started a drug company at 104 N. Main, calling it A&amp;A Drugs.

By 1893, they moved next door to a larger building at 106 N. Main.

This longtime business was eventually sold to Raymond Hammond in 1927. He expanded the company to four stores by 1930.

One of those stores was at 801 E. 4th, built in 1927. The first photo shows A&amp;A Drugs at 801 E. 4th at opening.

In 1947, Charles Dowse purchased it to become Dowse Drug Co.

Between 1949 and 1967, it was Woody's Drug Co. owned by W.A. Coffin.

Between 1968 and 1977, the property changed identity to become the Mary Carter Paint Store.

Between 1978 and 1984, it was Metzler's Paint &amp; Wallpaper.

In 1985, it was The Color Wheel - Paint &amp; Wallpaper.

In 1987, it was Paradise Sound - Video Recording - Equipment Sales &amp; Service.

In 2012, it became La Esquina Latina Mexican Goods. The second photo shows that enterprise then.

The third photo shows the property today, looking pretty vacant, with it being owned by Oscar Nufio and Geronima Rizo of Wichita.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson said the railroad tracks at Avenue D and Main Street are open with temporary lane restrictions in place due to ongoing water main repair work.

To facilitate necessary repairs, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction until the completion of the project. We anticipate full restoration of all lanes by Wednesday, July 24th.

Motorists are advised to plan for potential delays and consider alternative routes if possible.

The City appreciates the patience and understanding of residents and commuters as they work to ensure the reliability and safety of our infrastructure.&nbsp;

Lane restrictions at Ave. D and Main tracks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Block by Block Investment Program, an initiative funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and managed by the Housing Commission in partnership with Hutch Rec, is proud to announce the successful completion of its 2024 grant cycle. This innovative program, part of Hutch Rec’s Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, has seen remarkable engagement and investment from homeowners, significantly enhancing the curb appeal and fostering a strong sense of community across Hutchinson’s neighborhoods.​

Community and Homeowner Investment​

The Block by Block program has been a resounding success, supporting 14 home improvement projects with grants totaling over $19,000. These grants were used to reimburse homeowners for 50% of their project costs, up to $1,500 per household. The program, which encouraged clusters of neighbors in designated areas to collaborate on exterior home improvement projects, has demonstrated a tremendous impact. With this influx of funds, homeowners have invested more than $60,000 in their own projects, ranging from updating porches and replacing front doors to installing new exterior windows and adding flowerbeds.​

The financial investment by the homeowners showcases their commitment to not only improving their own properties but also to enhancing the overall appearance and value of their neighborhoods. This collaborative approach has resulted in visible transformations across the community, making Hutchinson's neighborhoods more attractive and vibrant.​

"Residents have been really excited about this program because we intentionally made it a low-barrier program," said Denice Gilliland, Neighborhood Development Manager at Hutch Rec. "The goal is to bring residents together to help them build connections with each other, but also to inspire pride in where they live."​

Building Neighborhood Connections​

Beyond physical improvements, the Block by Block program has been instrumental in bringing neighbors together. By requiring at least five connecting properties to participate jointly, the initiative has fostered teamwork and strengthened relationships within the community. This collective effort has not only beautified neighborhoods but also built a sense of camaraderie among residents.​

The success stories from this cycle highlight how neighbors, who may have only been acquaintances before, have come together to plan and execute their projects. This interaction has laid the foundation for stronger, more supportive communities where residents feel more connected and invested in their surroundings.​

"To see programs come through that are backed by the city, backed by the county, it really is encouraging to see that they believe in not only the history that is in Hutchinson but also the families that are keepers of that history and the families who live in these homes," said Michelle Stewart, a Block by Block participant.​

Given the overwhelming success and positive feedback, the Block by Block Investment Program is set to open applications again in 2025. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is holding a City Community Meeting on July 30 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m at Stringer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College. 

This meeting is an important opportunity for the city to strengthen communication with the community and gather your feedback on key city topics.

Take a break from the Kansas heat and join Kansas Wheat at High Plains Journal’s Sorghum U/Wheat U event on Tuesday, August 13, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Wichita.&nbsp;

“Kansas Wheat looks forward to Sorghum U/Wheat U each year as an educational event designed to help producers make their operations more efficient, effective and profitable,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “Through breakout sessions and producer panels, the event addresses current challenges and trends in technology, management practices and marketing. All attendees will head home with information they can immediately put into practice.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The free, one-day event starts with breakfast sandwiches, coffee and a producer panel discussion featuring sorghum and wheat producers, including Kansas Association of Wheat Growers' Vice President, Chris Tanner, from Norton.&nbsp;

Breakout sessions throughout the day will provide additional opportunities for producers to hear the latest in wheat research, technology and management recommendations. Dalton Henry, vice president of trade policy with U.S. Wheat Associates, will discuss changes in wheat seed technology and policy implications for global trade. Romulo Lollato, K-State Research and Extension wheat and forage specialist will provide a rundown of this year’s wheat harvest and varietal and practice considerations as Kansas farmers prepare to plant wheat this fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelsey Andersen Onofre, assistant professor of plant pathology in K-State's College of Agriculture, will provide updates on the diseases that impacted the 2024 wheat crop. She will also discuss the need for disease management following spring and summer rains, especially the need to control volunteer wheat early and throughout the fall to prevent Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) infections in the following wheat crop.&nbsp;

Additional breakout sessions will cover topics specific to sorghum, including how to manage sorghum fertility to maximize profitability, the National Sorghum Producers climate-smart sustainability program and emerging markets.&nbsp;

During a complimentary lunch, keynote speaker Matt Hines, a licensed commodity broker and risk management consultant with Lowen &amp; Associates, will provide a market outlook for the wheat and sorghum markets. Kansas Wheat and Kansas Grain Sorghum will also provide updates on the top issues each commodity is working to address at the regional, state and national levels.&nbsp;

ARLINGTON, Tex. — The United Football League held its UFL College Draft on Wednesday and a familiar name was selected first.

Kansas quarterback Jason Bean was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Memphis Showboats.&nbsp;

Bean is currently signed with the Indianapolis Colts after joining the team as an undrafted free agent.

In his senior season, Bean helped lead the Jayhawks to a 9-4 record and to its first bowl victory since 2008. He threw for 2,130 yards and 18 touchdowns this past fall in Lawrence. He added nearly 300 yards rushing to go along with three touchdowns.

The UFL season takes place during the spring, just completed its first season after it had been formed by a merger of two previous professional leagues, the XFL and USFL. Its draft pool consists strictly of players who went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft in April.

🏈 Former Jayhawk selected No. 1 in UFL College Draft

TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly announced today that a combined $26 million is being awarded to 33 projects to improve intersections and roads in cities across the state that have been selected for funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP).

CCLIP funds improvements to state highways that extend through cities. The cities will receive a combined total of approximately $26 million, which includes $5.5 million in state fiscal year 2026 and $20.5 million in state fiscal year 2027.

“This popular program makes it possible to improve the safety and accessibility of our local highways that are local centers of community life,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Thanks to our increasingly solid financial footing at the state and federal levels, Kansas is finding ways to solve problems and bring resources to various regions of the state.”

Under the CCLIP, a city must contribute up to 25% of the project cost based on its population, though some cities contribute significantly more. Cities with a population under 2,500 aren’t required to provide a match. Projects in this program may fall into one of three categories: Surface Preservation (SP), Pavement Restoration (PR), or Geometric Improvement (GI).

The City of Hutchinson is receiving $400,000 for surface preservation in Fiscal Year 2026, as is the City of Lyons and the City of Pratt.

In Fiscal Year 2027, Moundridge is receiving $400,000 for surface preservation, with Newton&nbsp;receiving $1.2 million for pavement restoration.

SP projects involve maintenance work such as resurfacing and are funded up to $400,000 per project. PR projects typically involve full-depth pavement replacement without changes to the overall geometric characteristics and may also address drainage issues. GI projects address geometric issues such as adding turn lanes, improving intersections, or modifying the lane configuration to address capacity. The PR and GI categories are funded up to $1.5 million per project.&nbsp;

Area communities get CCLIP funding

Clarification: Robin Jackson with the Reno County GOP disputes Rep. Waggoner's assertion that the party had anything to do with the Monday night event hosted by. Sen. Steffen. In an email to Hutch Post, she wrote, "None of our officers were involved planning or questions asked or any organization nor of any procedures or conduct of the event." The quotation from Waggoner is word for word, as it pertains to his actual statements on the radio Wednesday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Rep. Paul Waggoner called in to the KWBW Phone Forum on Wednesday and gave contrast between the different opportunities for Republicans to speak that have happened in the past few days.

"I've been at both of the [Hutchinson] Chamber debates that they had here a week ago," Waggoner said. "The County Commission one was just last night. I thought they were very well run, a very fair debate."

Waggoner contrasted that with an event held for Republicans and unaffiliated voters on Monday by State Sen. Mark Steffen.

"I was very disappointed, actually, in what was put on by our current state senator and the Republican Party of Reno County," Waggoner said. "You know, as far as a forum, you actually ended up with one of the major House races, where there's two candidates, only one candidate was allowed to speak."

Waggoner is referring to the 102nd House District primary between Republicans Tyson Thrall and Kyler Sweely. Sweely was not allowed to speak at the Monday event.

"There were radio ads that were ran on your station announcing, it was called the 2024 Reno County Republican Party legislative forum, presented by me, this of course, Senator Steffen, in conjunction with the Reno County Republican Party," Waggoner said, referring to KWBW "It's a real kind of black eye to the party locally. The fact that they would be associated with something that was clearly partisan. On a primary election, you do want to hear all the candidates, all the Republican candidates speak. That didn't happen on Monday night. It's really disappointing."

Sen. Steffen called in later to the program to explain why he didn't feel it was appropriate for Sweely to speak.

"Mr. Sweely, I don't mean to discredit him in any way," Steffen said. "He's a pawn being played. You have the [Kansas] Chamber, AFP, the House leadership, came up with the idea of planting him in this district, take this seat, so they can have an extra chip to play with."

Steffen's point is simple. He would contend that Sweely's not from here. In fact, there was a <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/21/objections-board-rejects-residency-complaint-against-gop-candidate-for-kansas-house/">challenge to his candidacy in Topeka last month</a> based on his late move into the district that ultimately resulted in his remaining on the ballot.

"They dropped this guy in the Friday before the deadline of the election," Steffen said. "He has no history in this area, no job in this area, no earned income in this area. He has no tie to this area whatsoever. This is the crap that I am standing against. I don't care if he's a Democrat, a Republican, purple or a Martian. I'm going to call this out."

To mangle a phrase from Lesley Gore, it's Steffen's party and he'll deny if he wants to.

"There is no possibility that I, at my party, am going to provide a venue to promote a, a false candidate, a guy who has no business being on that ballot, other than, our Kansas statutes are an incredibly low crossbar."

The voters ultimately get to make the decision at the ballot box.&nbsp;

County museum "foam" fundraiser Saturday

LYONS, Kan. — The City of Lyons announced on Wednesday the retirement of Mr. Ed Truelove. 

His last working day with the City of Lyons will be September 1, 2024. 

Mr. Truelove has been an asset to the City of Lyons with more than 4 decades in public service, which began with 21 years in the United States Marine Corps, from which he retired in 1997. In 1999, he became a police officer in Wichita, then moved to Sterling, where he served as Chief of Police. 

He entered City Administration in 2012 when he accepted the Administrator position in Greensburg Kansas. He then served 8 1/2 years as City Administrator in Neodesha Kansas prior to coming to Lyons, where he began in September of 2023.

As a tribute, the City of Lyons is organizing a retirement reception that will be open to the public to honor Mr. Ed Trulove as an amazing City Administrator, Boss, Father, Grandfather and Friend. 

The reception date and time will be announced at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mr. Truelove has been an asset to the City of Lyons with more than 4 decades in public service, which began with 21 years in the United States Marine Corps, from which he retired in 1997. In 1999, he became a police officer in Wichita, then moved to Sterling, where he served as Chief of Police. He entered City Administration in 2012 when he accepted the Administrator position in Greensburg Kansas. He then served 8 1/2 years as City Administrator in Neodesha Kansas prior to coming to Lyons, where he began in September of 2023.As a tribute, the City of Lyons is organizing a retirement reception that will be open to the public to honor Mr. Ed Trulove as an amazing City Administrator, Boss, Father, Grandfather and Friend. Lyons City Administrator retiring

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Kansas Largest Night Rodeo is back again this weekend in Pretty Prairie.&nbsp;

"Each night, Wednesday through Saturday night, we'll be rodeoing in Pretty Prairie," said Booster Club Vice President Dusty Tacha. "The rodeo starts at 8 p.m. and the rodeo performance is about two hours long each night, so approximately 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. Gates open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online. You can go to pprodeo.com and there'll be a button there that will take you to etix.com. Etix is our ticket provider, so if you are buying tickets online, be sure you are getting them from etix.com and not some other website, okay? You can also get them from our Pretty Prairie Rodeo office."

The Pretty Prairie Rodeo has been going on since 1936. It's almost a guaranteed sellout every year. In fact, Friday night and Saturday night's rodeo performances are already sold out.

"Don't let that deter you from coming down to Pretty Prairie," Tacha said. "If you did not get a rodeo seat for Friday and Saturday, we do have dance-only tickets. There is a live band, Prairie Smoke, each night, Friday and Saturday night. We do have a live band for Wednesday and Thursday as well. Your rodeo ticket will get you into the rodeo dance. However, if you don't have a rodeo ticket for Friday and Saturday, we will sell you a dance-only ticket the night of, starting at 9.30 p.m. only in person from the Pretty Prairie ticket office."

The money raised at the rodeo stays in Pretty Prairie to provide scholarships to high school seniors, help groups such as the Prairie Sunset Home, the local food bank, scout troops, golf course, EMS, and the 4-H club.

Pretty Prairie Rodeo Wednesday through Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Family Community Theatre is presenting Little Shop of Horrors July 18-21 at the Flag Theatre in Hutchinson.

"This takes place in around circa 1960 in New York, Skid Row," said Cliff Riggs, who is the voice of the puppets and helped design sets for the production. "It's down and out section, downtown-ish area in Mushnick's Flower Shop. It's a failing flower shop as bums, winos, just vagrants all over the place. You have Seymour, an orphan he took in off the street, and love interest Audrey that also works in the flower shop, and then it comes into the picture this pod, this plant, this unknowing species.Turns out it's a plant from outer space that has a liking to blood, but not just any blood, but to human blood, so the story just evolves from there."

You can still get tickets in advance at Absolutely Home at 15 East 14th and at the Bookends bookstore, or you can get them online at <a href="http://FamilyCommunityTheatre.org">FamilyCommunityTheatre.org</a>. The puppetry for the plants in the shop is very demanding.

"Pod 1 is the smallest of it," Riggs said. "Pod 2 is actually manipulated by Seymour, the actor who plays Seymour live on stage. Pods 3 and 4, the larger two, we have two puppeteers, one that handles Pod 1 and another one that handles Pod 3 and 4. Pod 3 and 4 is very, very physically taxing, so if you come see the show, you'll sit out there and just be blown away as I am every night from backstage watching these individuals manipulate these massive, massive puppets."

FCT actually rented the puppets from Southwestern College, as the school rents their Little Shop puppets out regularly.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's time for the party to celebrate the diamond anniversary of the Hutchinson Art Association. It's Friday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Art Center at 405 North Washington.

"The party is free," said Barbara Withrow with the Art Association. "It's going to be this Friday night and boy, we've been planning this. It seems like forever. It has been months and months. And I want to acknowledge the two co-chairs on this because it was a huge undertaking and that's Anne Richardson and Pam Gertken. They have put in so many hours on this and you're going to be able to enjoy it when you come in Friday night from five to eight."

There will be food fads from the last 75 years and&nbsp;Drawings on Demand from Jennifer Weigel.

"She will be there and you can give her a topic. She's going to be like a virtual AI artist," said John Eberly with the Art Association. "She will draw it and you can color it or take it home with you or whatever you want to do with it."&nbsp;

"Emily Kohls is an employee," Withrow said. "She's in the office there and she is going to be the DJ. She does everything. She wears so many hats. She's very creative. She took the top three songs every year for 75 years. That'll be playing on a loop. And so whether you like the Beatles or funk, hip hop or classical music, it'll all be there. That's kind of fun. I've been working on the vintage clothing display and we're going to have mannequins set up dressed in vintage clothing from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s."

The event is a come and go time from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department is offering three Back To School Vaccine Clinics. Call 620-694-2900 to schedule an appointment to make sure your children are ready for school starting next month.&nbsp;

Vaccines are needed for children entering kindergarten, 7th grade and 11th grade.

Vaccine clinics coming up at Reno Co. Health Dept.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kansas Children’s Cabinet &amp; Trust Fund has granted Reno County, through the United Way of Reno County, $922,906 for the fiscal year 2025 beginning July 1, 2024.

The United Way manages this grant through 8 partner agencies that serve over 600 children in the County.

The comprehensive approach involves providing 11 programs to Reno County children, parents, and teachers. These programs are designed to meet the diverse needs of our children, offering engaging and well-prepared activities in their classrooms or daycare. Also, the grant prioritizes social-emotional support, recognizing its crucial role in preventing delays in children’s success. They also work closely with families to foster healthy home environments conducive to their children’s growth and development. They also support teachers by providing them with encouraging, positive training, ensuring they can create excellent classroom settings that cater to the needs of all their students.

The goal for Reno County is to develop the healthiest, well-equipped children to enter Kindergarten in Kansas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce held a candidate forum on Tuesday night, July 16 at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the HutchCC campus.

The overarching theme of the night in all races was limiting the size of county government and reducing property taxes when possible, but not everyone saw that as an equal possibility.

Reno County Commission District 2 candidates Melony Ball, Ron Hirst and Kenneth Nisly focused on serving that district, with Ball and Nisly both agreeing that services that are available in Hutchinson, should, to the degree it makes fiscal sense, be available in the western portion of the county, as well. Hirst did not disagree, but he wants to know more specifically what those constituents want and to have civil discourse about the issues facing the county and to make sure the options are studied as they prioritize spending.

Reno County Commission District 3 candidates Timothy Davies and Ron Vincent are lifelong acquaintances with different approaches to limiting government. Davies is a numbers guy as a former controller and budget expert for the county, Vincent leans on his business experience and what he calls common sense as the themes to his decision making.

Reno County Commission District 4 incumbent John Whitesel sees there being a clear distinction between him and his opponent, Richard Winger. 

Whitesel notes that he sometimes seems not very agreeable, as he sees his role as an advocate for the taxpayers to fight for what is right and to fight to have more transparency in what the county does at all levels, including with lower level boards and study sessions.

Winger is someone who wants to listen is willing to serve and be a part in this community. He didn't take particularly strong policy positions in his answers on Tuesday, appearing to want more information than was in the questions provided before deciding specifics.
