The Hutchinson Community College football team plays its 900th game in program history on Saturday for its 2023 home opener.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (1-0) play host to the Ellsworth Panthers (0-1) at 11 a.m. at Gowans Stadium for First Responders Day. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and over the air on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Countdown to Kickoff.

Starting the season ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA preseason rankings, Hutchinson returned to the top of the poll on Monday after a decisive 42-6 victory over No. 11 Navarro last Saturday in Corsicana, Texas. That outcome, combined with former No. 1 Iowa Western's 27-20 victory at unranked Dodge City swayed seven of the 10 voters to vote Blue Dragon at No. 1.

Freshman receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/richardson_tre_3jar">Tre Richardson</a>&nbsp;had one of the best debuts in Blue Dragons history, accounting for 268 all-purpose yards in the Blue Dragons' decisive wins at Navarro. Only Roger Frazier had more all-purpose yards in a Blue Dragon debut than Richardson. Frazier accounted for 330 yards against the Conquistadors in 2005.

The Blue Dragon defense was fierce, holding the high-powered Bulldogs to just two field goals and 236 yards. The Dragons forced one takeaway - a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/scruggs_jordan_m11u">Jordan Scruggs</a>.

Ellsworth plays a No. 1-ranked team for the second-straight week. The Panthers lost to NJCAA Division III College of DuPage last week 17-10. The game was tied 10-all after three quarters. Ellsworth quarterback Tristan McClary completed 13 of 36 passes for 103 yards. McClary was also the Panthers' leading rusher with 54 yards on 18 carries.

The Blue Dragons have won four games in a row in the series, including last season's 70-7 victory over the Panthers.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/roper_darby_ep43">Darby Roper</a>&nbsp;had a 32-yard punt return for a touchdown to start the scoring. With Hutchinson leading 14-7 after one quarter, the Blue Dragons scored 28 points in the second quarter and ultimately scored 56 unanswered points.

The Blue Dragons are 55-24-2 all-time in home openers, winning nine openers in a row.

The Blue Dragons scored 126 team points on Friday. Fort Hays State won the women's team championship for the third time with a team score of 31 points. Tabor College was second with 54 points. Butler finished third with 97 points.

Larson, a third-team NJCAA All-American in 2022 started this season off with a time of 18:53.44 on Friday over the three-mile course.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/avila_laura_lycl">Laura Avila</a>&nbsp;was the second Blue Dragon to cross the finish line. Avila placed 21st overall with a time of 19:42.63.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/hoskinson_taylor_dc3k">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;placed 33rd overall with a time of 20:26.70. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/picolet_jordyn_0jpp">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;placed 39th with a time of 20:51.85. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/grantham_abigail_8t47">Abigail Grantham</a>&nbsp;also figured in the scoring as Hutchinson's fifth runner to cross the line. Grantham was 48th with a time of 21:15.61

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/aden_lauren_1tw4">Lauren Aden</a>&nbsp;was 56th with a time of 22:18. 26. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/inskeep_chloe_mrty">Chloe Inskeep</a>&nbsp;was 62nd with a time of 23:01.69.

Fort Hays State's Regan Hodsden set a meet record with a winning time of 17:34.75. Teammate Jaycee Vath was second in 17:59.39.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2023-24/bios/darrah_christian_qkbf">Christian Darrah</a>&nbsp;had a strong summer of training and it paid off Friday night at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic, the season-opening meet for the Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team.

After an injury-plagued 2022 season, Darrah posted a time of 21:47.76 on Friday to lead the Blue Dragons. Darrah placed 21st in a strong 128-runner field. The Blue Dragon sophomore did not run in last year's Masterson Classic.

With only three runners competing on Friday, the Blue Dragons did not post a team score.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2023-24/bios/legrand_leo_7h89">Leo LeGrand</a>&nbsp;placed 31st with a time of 22:15.55 over the four-mile course. Freshman David Ultreras placed 44th with a time of 23:02.22.

Fort Hays State won the team title for the second time with a team score of 26 points. Northwest Tech was second with 64 points. Tabor College was third with 90 points.

Butler's Adam Bouldjadj won the individual championship with a time of 19:19.88, the second-fastest time ever recorded in the Masterson Twilight Classic.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 15 in Joplin, Missouri.

🏃‍♂️ MXC: Darrah starts season strong for Blue Dragons

Gordon Hobbs, 80, originally from Turon, died September 1, 2023, at Paramount Community Living and Rehab, Newton. He was born September 24, 1942, in Turon, to Francis L. and Mildred P. (Martin) Hobbs.

Gordon graduated from Turon High School in 1960, and attended Hutchinson Community College. On November 19, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Marsha Hobbs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gordon moved back to Turon in 1973 to take over the family farm. He retired and moved to Hutchinson after farming for 40 years. He enjoyed raising livestock and being outdoors, but driving the combine for wheat harvest was his favorite. Gordon loved dogs and always had at least one by his side or on his lap. Gordon was an athlete as a young man and known to be ornery, pestering his grandchildren even up until his last days. He had a passion for old cars and in later years he enjoyed entering his own antique cars in local car shows and parades. In retirement, Gordon and Marsha could be found dining out, visiting a casino, or playing games with cherished friends. Gordon was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Gordon is survived by: his daughters, Sheli (Jim) DeVolder, Spring, TX, Kim (Mike) Hall, Sioux Falls, SD, and Melissa (Stephen) Dick, Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Matthew DeVolder, Spring, TX, Jacob DeVolder, Nashville, TN, Nathaniel (Stephanie) Edwards, Albany, NY, Alex Dick, Omaha, NE, and Allyson Dick, Omaha, NE; sister, Donna (Bob) Keller, High Point, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marsha, and an infant son, Rick Alan.

A Celebration of Life Service for both Gordon and Marsha will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Turon Community Church. Friends are invited to join the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wichita Animal Action League, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

The program is one of only eight IB Programs in the state of Kansas and the only one west of Wichita.&nbsp; Since beginning the IBCP in 2015 and the IBDP in 2005, the program boasts a near 100% graduation rate.

Ten students--Abigail Bryan, Abigale Davenport, Clark Denison, Magnolia Foster, Tia Hines, Rebecca Lewton, Caroline Miller, Brady Ollenburger, Hannah West, and Madilyn Yantes--completed the requirements for the IBCP diploma, showcasing their commitment to academic excellence intertwined with a specialized career-related focus. The IBCP program, known for its integration of practical skills and rigorous academics, has equipped these students to tackle real-world challenges head-on as they venture into their chosen career paths.

Morgan Hixson, now in her freshman year at the University of Nebraska, completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in 2022-23. Required to tackle a challenging curriculum of six IB courses, Hixson's dedication shone through as she not only fulfilled the academic requirements but also achieved outstanding results. With four scores of 7, the highest attainable, and two scores of 6, she has demonstrated an exceptional level of mastery in her studies.&nbsp; The IBDP program is renowned for its academic rigor and emphasis on critical thinking, research, and a holistic education. Morgan's exceptional performance speaks volumes about her dedication, commitment to learning, and her ability to excel in a challenging academic environment.

"IB helped me grow academically and personally and allowed me to enter college with organizational, critical thinking, and study skills and with a head start on the material in classes. I'm so grateful for my experience with the IB program and the wonderful IB staff at HHS”, Hixson said.

Looking forward, this year’s current IB students mention the rigorous standards and challenging coursework. They are optimistic about the increased career, academic and scholarship opportunities through their participation in the IB programs. IB students are well-rounded both in academics and in activities. Many IB students also participate in athletics and extracurricular activities such as debate, forensics, choir and band.&nbsp;

As these graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them not only their hard-earned diplomas but also a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experiences that will undoubtedly propel them toward future success. Hutchinson High School IB Programme achieves perfect graduation rate for 22-23

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran was at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Thursday afternoon to announce federal funding for a partnership between the healthcare system and Hutchinson Community College.

"A couple of years ago, the Senate and the House changed the rules," Moran said. "There was a period of about 10 years in which, what we used to call earmarks were banned. We didn't reinstate earmarks, but we now have Congressionally Designated Spending. We are utilizing that opportunity, money that would be spent somewhere in the budget someplace in some state or congressional district elsewhere to try to make certain that those dollars find their way to Kansas."

A significant amount of those dollars are coming to Hutchinson.

"I am here to announce a Congressionally Designated Spending of $3 million to Hutchinson Community College for purposes of nursing education. President Carter File can describe better than I how the money will be spent, but it is mostly designed to increase the space available and increase the laboratory capabilities of the nursing program. My understanding is that this $3 million, when it's completed, will allow for 20 additional students to participate in nursing education at Hutchinson Community College."

File clarified that it is an additional 20 slots per year in the nursing program at HutchCC.&nbsp;

"There is not a community in Kansas, there's not a hospital in Kansas, there's not a health care provider in Kansas who doesn't wish we had more nurses," Moran said. "This is an opportunity for us to combine a very important institution, Hutchinson Community College, to this community, with another very important institution to this community, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center."

Moran said the money will be available to the college in September to work on the expansion of space at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for students to use for lab work with simulators that can give them the feel of live patients without risk to patients while they are learning.

Moran announces $3 million for HutchCC nursing program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — BrightHouse provides confidential support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Reno, Rice, Kingman and Harper counties. Last year, Bright House served 740 people.&nbsp;

Since 2018, the non-profit organization has given an annual presentation called "Consent" to Hutchinson Community College athletes by a trained advocate. 

"All of the incoming athletes we go and speak to them and one of the big things we talk about is consent," said Executive Director Sue Wray. "Also Kansas laws, because a lot of them aren't from here."

BrightHouse advocate Vince, began teaching the Consent presentation t0 HCC athletes this year.

Vince said as a former HCC student, one might speculate that sexual abuse occurs often on college campuses. Underage drinking and stalking among young adults are a few behaviors that could be connected to abuse.&nbsp;

"A lot of what I've seen both professionally and personally, a lot of people that age that are younger, who think they are invincible, they tend to do more things than they should," Vince said.

The presentation includes how to get and give consent, red flags to look for in a partner and how to access Bright House's resources.

BrightHouse has served young adults but Wray said as far as college students go, there is no specific way to tell whether or not they would commit an offense or be a victim.&nbsp;

"Our goal is to hopefully give them some wisdom or some training so hopefully they don't end up needing our services later," Wray said.

Wray said BrightHouse hopes to establish office hours on the HutchCC campus so students have more direct access and privacy.&nbsp;

"Even if it's just once a week, I feel like it would be good to have a consistent presence, Wray said. "We just haven't been able to make that quite happen yet."&nbsp;

BrightHouse employees are not court-mandated reporters but can recommend and provide support for court appointments, protection orders and other services.&nbsp;

The freshman from Topeka was named the NJCAA Special Teams National Player of the Week for his performance against No. 11 Navarro in now-No. 1 Hutchinson's 42-6 road victory on Saturday in Corsicana, Texas.

Richardson had one of best debuts in Blue Dragon history on Saturday after accounting for 268 all-purpose yards against the Bulldogs and scored three touchdowns – a 32-yard run, 57-yard reception and a 92-yard kickoff return.

Richardson had 32 rush yards, 93 receiving yards, 113 kickoff return yards and 30 punt return yards The 268 all-purpose yards by Richardson is second in a Blue Dragon debut only to Roger Frazier's 330 all-purpose yards against Dodge City in 2005.

Richardson's third-quarter 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the key play of the game. With Hutchinson leading 14-6 after Navarro took more than 7 minutes off the clock to kick a field goal, Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and a 21-6 lead just 12 seconds later.

🏈 NJCAA names Blue Dragon Tre Richardson national special teams player of the week

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The&nbsp;Denver Broncos&nbsp;signed former HutchCC cornerback Art Green to the 16-man practice squad.&nbsp;He was waived on Tuesday&nbsp;as the team worked their roster down to the 53-man limit.

Green, an undrafted free agent, impressed the Broncos during training camp, but did not make the final 53-man roster. However, the team is still high on his potential and hopes to develop him further on the practice squad. This move gives Green the opportunity to continue honing his skills and potentially earn a spot on the active roster in the future.

Green was a priority undrafted free agent signing by the Broncos after the 2023&nbsp;NFL Draft&nbsp;and was given the&nbsp;most guaranteed deal of all their UDFA signings at $170,000. While he didn’t make the final cut, the Broncos are still interested in developing the young cornerback.

Green, from Chesterfield, Missouri, signed with Hutchinson Community College in 2018, intercepting six passes in eight games as a true freshman. Green was a top junior college recruit after his second year with the Blue Dragons, signing with Houston before the 2020 season. He played in eight games off the bench that year (10 tackles, two pass breakups). He played in all 14 games as a reserve in 2021 (19 tackles, one interception, two pass breakups) and then became a starter in 2022, posting 49 tackles, three for loss, with two interceptions and eight pass breakups to garner second-team All-American Athletic Conference accolades. Green was the Independence Bowl Defensive MVP (nine tackles, one pass breakup).

Dixie Lee Easdon, 86, met her Savior face to face on August 29, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family and friends. &nbsp;She was born April 20, 1937, in Waterloo, IA, to Robert William and Laura Marguerite (Nichols) McCarthy.

Dixie graduated from St. Patrick’s High School, Fremont, NE, in 1956. She obtained her Associates Degree in 1987 from Hutchinson Community College and worked as a librarian for the college while attending.

Dixie enjoyed many hobbies including scrapbooking, stamping, crocheting, cooking, and reading. Her favorite was sewing and had a room full of sewing and other craft supplies. Volunteering was another passion. Dixie volunteered at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Hospice and Home Care of Reno County, Open Door Health Services, formerly known as Open Door Pregnancy Care Center for 20 plus years, and for Bethany Church of the Nazarene for 25 plus years, where she was a devoted member.

On November 3, 1956, she married Charles Franklin Easdon in Council Bluffs, IA. He survives.

Also surviving are: &nbsp;children, Jerry (Judi) Easdon of Hollister, MO, Paula Sue (Terry) Endicott of Broken Arrow, OK, Jess (Kim) Easdon of Hutchinson; son-in-law, Steve (Vickie) Douglas of Broken Arrow, OK; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren plus scores of bonus children.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Pamela Douglas; siblings, Barbara Grasseschi and Bill McCarthy; and granddaughter, Hannah Easdon.

Celebration of Life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Bethany Church of the Nazarene, 408 N Kent Rd. Hutchinson, KS 67501, with Pastor Jason Avery officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson. Friends may sign her memorial book from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Bethany Church of the Nazarene or Open Door Health Services, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

LANDOVER, Md. —&nbsp;The&nbsp;Washington Commanders&nbsp;are keeping undrafted rookie receiver Mitchell Tinsley on the 53-man roster after a strong performance in Saturday's preseason finale,&nbsp;per the Washington Post.

Tinsley attended&nbsp;Hutchinson Community College&nbsp;in for two years, recording 57 receptions for 656 yards and four touchdowns for the&nbsp;Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

In 2020, Tinsley transferred to&nbsp;Western Kentucky University&nbsp;to play for the&nbsp;Hill toppers. In his first year there, he had 43 receptions for 377 yards and four touchdowns. As a 14-game starter in 2021, Tinsley had 87 receptions for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In 2022, Tinsley transferred to&nbsp;Penn State&nbsp;to play for the&nbsp;Nittany Lions.In his first game at Penn State, he had seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. In 13 starts, Tinsley recorded 51 receptions for 577 yards and 5 touchdowns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tinsley is from Lee Summit, Missouri.&nbsp; He attended&nbsp;Lee's Summit High School, where he only played one year of football, recording 19 receptions for 350 yards and six&nbsp;touchdowns&nbsp;as a senior.

Tinsley signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in May of this year.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Tinsley capitalized on his four targets by making three catches producing 89 yards of offense and nearly scoring two touchdowns for&nbsp;Washington in the process.

“I think it went pretty well,” Tinsley said when asked after the game about his preseason and training camp overall. “I took advantage of my opportunities when I got them and I think I capitalized on them.”

One touchdown was confirmed, but the other was overturned on review and fellow rookie Brycen Tremayne got the honors of scoring from one-yard out on the next play.&nbsp;

It was a great game for Tinsley, and it was one he needed after dropping two golden opportunities to shine in the second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.&nbsp;

Tinsley signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State, the same school that starting receiver Jahan Dotson played for.

Now, Tinsley will have to report back to Ashburn, Virginia for work on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Clarification: David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA noted that the formal fundraising for the YMCA related to the new building will begin following the United Way's blackout period when agencies that receive United Way funding are asked to allow their annual campaign to be the sole fundraising appeal.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said the expansion plans for the Hutch Y are going forward.

"Just knowing our current location and the proximity to the high school, to the college, to the Cosmosphere, to the Sports Arena, there's probably not a Y in the country that wouldn't want to be in a location like that," Foster said. "Kind of that central hub of activity. That's something that we're really excited about. As we look to move forward and build a new Y here in Hutch, we would love to stay in the location that we're in right now. That obviously would involve a little bit more space and land. That's what we're kind of exploring, that partnership with USD 308, to see what that might look like."

The cost for a new Y is going to be substantial.

"Just seven years ago, our Newton YMCA was built new," Foster said. "That was about a $20 million project. With the costs of things the way they are now, we're probably thinking around $30 million or something like that. We don't know that for a fact yet, but to plan accordingly. We're going to try to get to $20 million of that and then we'll be able to start moving forward with the new facility and everything."

It will take some time to raise those funds.&nbsp;

"Realistically, probably within the next year," Foster said. "Once you break ground and stuff like that, you're maybe talking another year. Obviously, if we could get the money part raised a little bit faster, that could speed up that time frame a little bit. As a general rule, that's probably a couple years, then hopefully be able to beat that a little bit, but you just never know with construction."

The hope would be to keep the current facility open as much as possible while working on the new building and they still need to find out from an architect if they will be able to keep any of the old building in the long run or not and they won't really get to that point in the process until they have raised around half of the cost.

The current Y is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 716 East 13th.

Hutchinson Y beginning fundraising for new building

Midfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored a season-high five points in a shutout victory over Seward County and the Hutchinson Community College freshman was named the Jayhawk Conference's Division I Women's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The freshman from Wichita, had two goals and one assist in the now-No. 16 Blue Dragons' 5-0 KJCCC victory over Seward County on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. She earned her first career game-winning goal. It was her second multi-goal game of the season.

The Blue Dragons went 1-0-1 last week with a scoreless draw at Garden City and the five-goal win over the Saints.

Scruggs jumped a route for an interceptions and traveled 52 yards untouched for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Scruggs had two total tackles.

Starting the season 2-0-1, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team moved up two spots in the first NJCAA Division I regular-season rankings released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons are No. 16 this week after decisive victories over Northeastern Junior College and Seward County and a scoreless tie against Garden City.

Hutchinson plays three road games in this week's rankings period. The Blue Dragons travel to Dodge City on Wednesday and play a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday in Enid, Oklahoma against Crowder College and NOC-Enid.

Dating back to last season, the Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls. That's the longest consecutive run as a ranked team since the 2016 season.

The Blue Dragons are one of 1 of 5 teams ranked in the Top 20 this week.

Barton is the highest-ranked KJCCC team at No. 10. Butler is at No. 11 with Hutchinson at No. 15, Cowley at No. 18 and Coffeyville at No. 19.

Iowa Western received all seven first place votes and maintained the No. 1 spot in the national rankings. Salt Lake is No. 2, Tyler is No. 3, Eastern Florida State is No. 4 and Monroe is No. 5.

The Blue Dragons (1-0) traveled to No. 11 Navarro last Saturday and defeated the Bulldogs 42-6. Previous No. 1 Iowa Western had a much-closer game on Saturday at Dodge City, defeating the Conquistadors 27-20.

This is the fifth time in program history that the Blue Dragons are the No. 1 team in the NJCAA Rankings.

The first time at No. 1 was a five-week run in 2019. The 2020/21 Blue Dragons started the season No. 1 in the preseason rankings and went wire-to-wire to win a national championship. The 2021 Blue Dragons were preseason No. 1, but lost the season opener, ultimately finishing at No. 3. Last season, the Blue Dragons spent six weeks at No. 1 before falling in the NJCAA Championship Game.

The Dragons received seven first-place votes to IWCC's three and narrowly moved past the Reivers. Hutchinson had 147 poll points to Iowa Western's 143. Yet to open its season, Northwest Mississippi stayed at No. 3. Kilgore moved up to No. 4 and Garden City had the biggest jump of the week, climbing five spots to No. 5.

Butler slipped one spot to No. 13 after a five-point loss to Garden City. Highland and Coffeyville are both receiving votes this week. Coffeyville fell from No. 6 after the Scotties upset the Red Ravens on Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its first Top 15 poll of the regular season on Monday afternoon, and the HutchCC Blue Dragons are ranked No. 1.

The Blue Dragons were No. 2 in the preseason Top 15 poll, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/42c02c55-844a-4212-a3c3-51842071fb90">but after dismantling then-No. 11 Navarro in the season opener, 42-6</a>, HutchCC found itself No. 1.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is one of three Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) teams in the poll. Garden City is No. 5 and Butler is No. 13. Coffeyville and Highland are both receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons will host Ellsworth (Iowa) on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the home opener at Gowans Stadium. The game had originally been scheduled for 2 p.m., but was moved up in the day to avoid the high temperatures. This will be the annual First Responders Day.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcasted on&nbsp;<a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9-FM</a>, the radio home for Blue Dragon athletics. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. with Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 10:30 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏈 Week 1 NJCAA and KCAC results

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jason Probst with Circles of Reno County is clear that the Circle Leaders who are getting ready to start their journey out of poverty on Aug. 31 need to learn how to navigate long-term planning as they get out of a get through the day mindset.

"We're not trying to solve an immediate problem, we're not trying to solve a crisis," Probst said. "What we are trying to do is to help people learn some of these hidden rules about navigating middle class life. One of the things we know from our work in Circles and from research that's been done around the country, is that there are different rules for different socioeconomic levels. People in poverty have a group of rules that they follow to navigate that life. As we move from poverty to middle class, there's an entirely different set of rules that sometimes seems very foreign and very unfamiliar to people who haven't experienced that before. We try to connect people and build a community around people who are ready to make the journey from poverty to middle class in stability."

Navigating things like education after high school is also a challenge.

"I came from a family where neither of my parents graduated from high school," Probst said. "College was not even a thought. To sit down with them and have them help me go through a financial aid form for college, was beyond the realm of possibility. That's a reality for a lot of people."

These Circle Leaders need allies who can help them without telling them what they should or should not do, but letting them know what all the options in front of them are.

"I heard a really good analogy the other day about people who have to survive in life," Probst said. "It's kind of like, if you have eyeglasses that you can look through, most people don't have cracks in their glasses. They can see clearly through that way. People who have to survive all the time, or don't have some of those middle class experiences, such as parents who can sit down and help them with college, they have to see the world through these sort of cracked lenses."

It will take time and resources to create transformational change in the community, but as each Circle Leader gets stable, they are able to change the trajectory of their family for generations to come.&nbsp;

Circles ready to start new group on growth journey

CORSICANA, Texas — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College opened the 2023 season with a bunch of new faces. Thirty-four players from last year's national championship runner-up team moved on to four-year schools.

Despite returning zero offensive starters, the Blue Dragons picked up where last year's team left off.

In 2022, then-No. 3 Hutchinson thumped then-No. 13 Navarro 42-0. It was the first time in 257 games that the Bulldogs went scoreless.

With new faces like quarterback Samari Collier and wide receiver Tre Richardson, the Dragons once again put up 42 points — after an inauspicious start.

The first two Dragon possessions went three-and-out before the third possession was squandered by penalties.

 </figure>No. 11 Navarro got on the board first with an Eric Acosta 31-yard field goal. The seven-play, 41-yard drive was capped just six seconds into the second quarter.Hutchinson answered with 14-straight points.The Dragons capped a 14-play, 74-yard drive with a Brandon Epton Jr. five-yard rush.With 1:36 left in the half, Tre Richardson hauled in a 57-yard bomb from Collier to put the Dragons up 14-3.The deep ball was part of a 99-yard drive that took 4:12 off the clock.Bulldog punter James Ingham had pinned Hutchinson at its own one-yard line, before the Dragons connected in the passing game.Collier finished 12 of 16 for 160 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Tristan Smith on what was nearly a 14-yard touchdown. Smith battled to the goal line and lost the ball as he stretched for the score.Fortunately, ManMan Singleton fell on the ball in the end zone to preserve the score. That touchdown was part of Hutchinson's 28 unanswered points to close the game.<figure>

 </figure>After Navarro hit another 31-yard field goal in the third quarter to pull within 14-6, Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the house.After the Singleton end-zone recovery, the Blue Dragons got a 32-yard scamper from Richardson, his third score of the night.Richardson scored on a 57-yard reception, a 92-yard kickoff return and a 32-yard rush.Jordy Scruggs finished the scoring with a 52-yard pick-six.Hutchinson held Navarro to negative-six-yards rushing in the first half. Quarterback Dane Jentsch found some running room late against the third-stringers to finish with a team-leading 66 rushing yards.Jentsch was just 15 of 36 for 146 yards and an interception. He was sacked four times.The Dragons held the Bulldogs to 90 rushing yards and 236 total yards for the night."Our defensive effort was great all night long," Dallas said. "Even when (Navarro) had big plays, we were able to bounce back and hold them to field goals."Meanwhile, the Dragon offense racked up 398 yards on 61 plays (6.5 yards per play).The Bulldogs were held to 3.5 yards per play on 67 tries.FINAL: Hutchinson 42 Navarro 6Richardson finished with 93 receiving yards, 32 rushing yards (on one carry), 113 kick return yards and 30 punt return yards. He scored thrice.Malik McConico led the defense with 5.5 tackles.The Dragons (1-0) play at home on Sept. 2 against the Ellsworth Panthers (0-1).
