TOPEKA, Kan. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for Kansas Christy Davis announced Friday that USDA is funding three projects to increase the availability of domestic biofuels that will create new market opportunities and jobs for Kansas farmers.

Today’s announcement is part of a larger national announcement that includes 25 other states.

The Hutch Post area project is in Sedgwick. A $145,500 grant will help create infrastructure to expand the sales and use of renewable fuels through Basgall Investments LLC’s fueling stations. This project will install four E15 dispensers at a fueling station in Sedgwick. This project projects to increase the amount of ethanol sold by 374,400 gallons per year.

USDA to fund biofuels grant in Sedgwick

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the class of 2022, the four-year graduation rate for all Kansas public school districts reached 89.1 percent, the highest ever. Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards traveled across the state last school year trying to figure out what schools that increased their rate are doing right.&nbsp; 

"The common things that I tended to hear about, one is just what I said, a heavy stress on we monitor every child in high school for early warnings," Tallman said. "What many said is, we don't wait for the kid to be failing some classes or falling behind in credits. We're watching every week to see kind of how they're doing, so that's a big one. They say, we pay attention to a kid's status and when we see there's a problem of any kind, we talk with them immediately. We try to find out what's going on. We try to provide them other supports."

Helping kids see the relevance of school to the job market is another success point.&nbsp; 

"Many of these successful districts say a big part of it has been working harder to help kids see connections with what they want to do," Tallman said. "CTE programs, concurrent college courses. So you're getting a start on college or a technical college or a technical degree while you're in high school so you have a sense of where that is. Are kids connected in other ways? Do you have a lot of, do you have activities? Do you have sports? Do you have clubs? Do you have things that help students find a personal connection to someone, whether it's their peers, whether it's a teacher, whether it's a coach, something beyond just, again, kind of going through the classroom stuff so they feel a part of something."

That is one of the goals of a new graduation requirement for those entering as freshmen this year. It's a requirement for two 'post-secondary assets' to graduate high school.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"It's really saying we're going to show that you've done something beyond what's required in the classroom for credit," Tallman said. "I think the requirement is you're gonna have to have two of those. That might be earning a career tech credential of some kind or an industry certificate in an area that shows, you know, you've mastered a certain skill in a work, in an occupational area. It might be that you have demonstrated a high level of score on an ACT course or something like that. It might be that you're involved in a work learning program. State Board is still in the process of defining those."

The intent is to have students be connected to something outside of the traditional school day, and as Tallman's trips have shown, when that happens, kids are more likely to stay in school and eventually walk across the stage.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man pleaded guilty Thursday in Reno County District Court to charges including attempted first-degree murder.&nbsp;

Briantey L. Baskin was arrested on May 9 after <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/102ed0f9-85ab-4adf-bfdb-6dbd59bd4861">stabbing a man near 1st Avenue and Main Street</a>.

Baskin also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and criminal threat.&nbsp;

Baskin is due back in court for sentencing on Sept. 13.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you're sending your child off to college, there are so many things to remember, but Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas knows that there are some things you can be prepared for.

"A couple of things that people may not think about are insurance coverage, both homeowners, renters, and auto insurance," Steward said. "Also having a plan for vehicle maintenance or if something happens to the vehicle for a breakdown, for example. Those are two things that we urge college students and their parents to think about."

If you live on campus, your parents homeowners policy may help, but if you live off campus, you'll likely need renters insurance. Talk to your carrier about what is right for you. The best way to protect your valuables is, if you know you won't need them on campus, leave them at home.

"While some valuable items such as laptops are needed on campus, items such as expensive jewelry and things like that are best left at home," Steward said.&nbsp; "If you're not going to need them, it's going to be safer left at home rather than in a dorm or college apartment."

Whatever you have, you need to document that you have it and what condition it is in.

"It's good to create a detailed inventory of all the items in your dorm room or apartment in the event you need to file an insurance claim," Steward said. "Just make sure that you have everything updated in terms of what your possessions are in that room or apartment. And then it's also good to inventory the condition of your apartment or dorm room, because as we know, when you move out of those, sometimes you're charged for damage, and if it's not your fault, if it was already there, that's another thing to think about."

AAA: College preparation should include insurance issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Michaela Schommer with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter said the need for adoptions of both dogs and cats never stops, and EAGLE Media is helping again by hosting an Adopt-A-Pet event Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at 825 North Main.

"The shelter is never empty, unfortunately," Schommer said. "For every outgoing animal there's probably two or three coming in."

The plan is to have as many pets out at the event as they can, but that's dependent on how many people volunteer to help.

"We always aim to bring about 10 to 12," Schommer said. "It is dependent upon how many volunteers are out here just to help manage all those animals and right now I need about eight more volunteers so if you're already registered and have assisted at an adoption event or at the shelter before please respond to my email."

There also will be a special deal that day for adoptions.

"For Saturday's event, we are doing a slightly reduced rate," Schommer said. "All dogs will just be $100 and all cats at the shelter are $25 for the day."&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of Blanchard Avenue and Main Street in South Hutchinson.

In 1949, Joe Davenport purchased a 40-acre tract of land on this southwest corner. Later, he sold part of the land to construct the South Hutch Drive-In Theatre and another part was donated for the Lionette Softball Fields.

A large round-top was constructed and Ferguson Tractors started business there at 27 S. Main in 1950. The first photo shows that venture at opening.

However, Ferguson didn't last long at that location. In 1953, the round-top was converted to the Davenport Consignment Barn with Joe and his father, Charles, being the auctioneers. The second photo shows one of the first auction days in 1953.

This enterprise went on for decades, even after being sold to family members, Leon and Annie Moeder, in 1988. The auction barn ended in 1998 and the round-top was sold to Larry Doskocil. The third photo shows the round-top today, but it has been readdressed as 20 W. Ave. A, South Hutchinson, and is now owned by Troy Jacques.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NJCAA announced Wednesday that the season opening football game between Hutchinson and New Mexico Military Institute will be streamed on ESPN+.&nbsp;

The game will be played on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Gowans Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Blue Dragons and the Broncos are meeting for the fourth time on the gridiron, the Blue Dragons have won the previous three times.

HutchCC was picked to win the Jayhawk Conference at its Media Day in July, while NMMI was picked to finish fifth in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday approved a residential development policy, so that they could allocate a grant for residential development that allows for a range of uses that will allow a city to be prepared to work with private developers on building new residential facilities.

"The city's proposal is not to conflict with private enterprise," said Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas. "It's the opposite. We are trying to attract private enterprise here. Because something's wrong, I think we can all look at that, or at a minimum, we're stuck. If we can say, we'll just do this one time and perhaps the market fixes itself, that's a win. If we need to do this maybe two or three times and then eventually we've jump-started the economy enough that builders and developers just kind of run from there, that's great. The tax base grows, it's kind of a mutual win for all of us."

The money will come from already set aside&nbsp;economic development funds. The first grant will be for $35,000 to start the process at the land the city bought near 11th and Hendricks, with another $250,000 encumbered to be spent once the city has engaged a developer and more details on the specifics of the land use can be known.

The intent of the commission is that other cities in the county will follow Hutchinson's lead.

"This is for the entire county to benefit and participate from," Villegas said. "If they want to see how we're doing this, the RFP process that we structured and put together and any agreements used, I would be an open book. Here's exactly how we did it, if you want to copy it, or make it your own and kind of right size it, but it's kind of to everyone's benefit, whether they are going to build in Yoder or wherever."

The vote on both motions was 3-2 with commissioners Hirst, Friesen and Parks voting in favor and commissioners Whitesel and Bogner voting against the policy generally and Hutchinson's initial proposal specifically.

County commission passes residential policy, Hutch grant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An open house is coming up next week at the Hutchinson YMCA.

&nbsp;"It's our second one in a row, our open house at the YMCA," said David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA. "It's a great opportunity for members and non-members alike to come and find out all the great things that are happening at the YMCA and how they and their families can get involved as members and as program participants."

There's also a break if you join at that time.

"We've got some pop-up classes planned and the event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. next Tuesday, August 20th, and we'll have some pop-up classes, martial arts, gymnastics, cycling, lift class, so some group ex classes and some programs, especially building on the Olympic theme with our gymnastics and swim lessons and swim team program," Foster said. "Any new member that joins the Y that day, specifically during that event, we will waive the joiner fee. So that is a $50 savings right off the bat and then we'll also have some raffles and different things going on at the event that people will want to make sure that they are there for and can get involved in."

YMCA open house coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain said Wednesday in an email to Hutch Post that the investigation is not done into last week's fire at 2404 East 4th.

"The cause of the fire remains undetermined, which is to say information is still being gathered and looked at," Cain said. 

A man identified on Facebook as Floyd Scott is offering a reward for information connected with the cause, which he believes to be intentional.&nbsp;

"I know I take phone calls from Floyd, the owner, multiple times a day," Cain said. "One of the phone calls was about a reward. He has been convinced it is 'arson' from the moment he got the call. I told him he can certainly offer anything he would like in order to get information, and maybe in his friends circle it will be effective."

Cain said they have not released information to the owner on any potential cause.

Cause of East 4th fire still undetermined, despite reward offered

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas says don't drive distracted, especially while kids are figuring out their new school routine.

"You need to have your your total focus on the road, obviously, with kids walking to school, biking to school, buses out and about," Steward said. "It's essential for drivers to stay focused on the road and be extra cautious. So put your phone down. Don't be looking at your phone while you're heading to take your kids to school or headed into the school zone."

On the way home is when kids really aren't paying attention.

"Nearly one fifth of traffic fatalities of children below the age of 15 or school age pedestrians are killed between the hours of three and four p.m. than any other time of day," Steward said. "So that just reiterates the importance of staying focused, not only that after school period, but also before school."

In addition, slow down in school zones, so that if something does happen, everyone is safer.

"Triple A Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted some research and found that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling twenty five miles per hour is nearly two thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle going thirty five miles an hour," Steward said. "That 10 mile an hour reduction can can play a huge difference for somebody who happens to be struck by a vehicle."

Give yourself extra time to get where you are going for the first couple of weeks, so that new drivers and parents new to the school buildings can find their way.

Focus key while driving in school zones

INMAN, Kan. — Sunday, Aug. 25 at the field next to Zoar Mennonite Brethren Church, there will be a community wide corn hole tournament and tailgate hosted by the Inman FFA.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Festival of Remembrance to benefit Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County is Friday night at Prairie Dunes. 

"Our community is very blessed to have Hospice House, which is a home for end of life services," said Darla Wilson with Hospice. "It is very uncommon in the state or the nation to have one of those, especially in a community our size. Most people that are not in their own homes or in a nursing home, they don't have that opportunity. They are served in a hospital. If you have ever been in the Hospice House, it is very different than the care that you get in a hospital at end of life. That warmth and the feeling of being home and the family being comfortable. It's just something that this community is very blessed to have."

There were still a few single tickets available for the event.&nbsp;

"The one thing that you lose when you are faced with a terminal illness is control," Wilson said. "We want to give that family and that patient as much control as they can have. So what do they want? Where do they want to live their final days and hours? Some people will come to hospice house back and forth as they need to for respite or whatnot, but some people definitely want to be at home and they have the support to do that with us coming in and having that added layer. It works for them. So wherever they want to be, we want them to make those choices."

"A lot of the options after the governing body hears all of the facts presented to them from city staff, in addition to any plans or facts that are provided from the property owner, after all that being said, the major option would be to demo the facility," said Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas. "That would be the recommendation of staff at this point."

Mayor Greg Fast is on board with that idea.

"I'm not going to speak for the other four, but I will speak for myself," Fast said. "Yes, we are tired of looking at that place. Quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing from people about it because they have legitimate concerns and we need to take care of it."

It's possible the city could give the property owner some short period to demo the facility himself and if it is not done by then, then the city would finish up condemnation procedures to do it anyway.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announced Monday that it is moving forward with the initial stages of a STAR Bond project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the community's development and economic growth. The project will be broken into three parts.

"The three parts would be out where the new hotel is being built, along with the new Popeyes, the new Old Chicago, and the convention center," Mayor Greg Fast said.&nbsp; "The second part would be downtown, and then the third area will be around the Cosmosphere. So those three areas will benefit greatly from the Star Bond, and it will be funded through sales tax that the state gives us back."

The rate will not increase beyond what it already will be in those areas.

"We've had success in the past with the STRATACA elevator shaft," Fast said. "It was a several million dollar project that I believe was, those bonds were paid off early and it was a Star Bond project too that has helped our community, and to this day, STRATACA draws in people from all over the world to go to that salt museum."

They don't have a final number on the STAR bond amount yet, as that is still going through underwriting.&nbsp;

"The plan is to do some upgrades to Memorial Hall, commercial downstairs property with the Landmark, and then also additional STEM education space for the Cosmosphere," Fast said.&nbsp;

The City plans to hold a public hearing in September, during which the City Council will consider the approval of the district. This step is crucial, but it is just the beginning of a longer process to bring these projects to fruition.

Hutch to get STAR Bond project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital notes that getting your pet properly vaccinated is important, but there is an additional safeguard if you get the shots at your veterinarian.

"I do have people that'll come in and say, Hey, you know, I'm just going to get my vaccine from Tractor Supply and do it myself or, you know, whatever that may be," Miller said. "You know, if that's what you want to do, that's okay, but we were talking about most vaccine companies. If you are giving your pets vaccines through your veterinarian, so your pet's coming in for a checkup, we're saying, Hey, they're healthy, we're vaccinating them appropriately per the vaccine schedule, if something were to happen in your pet, the example is Parvo. We have had in our practice where we had a non-responder. For some reason, sometimes pets immune systems just don't respond to the vaccines the way they should, so they don't get that protection. If they're vaccinated appropriately by your veterinarian at the right time schedule, and then they still contract, you know, say Parvo, the one in house that we had, I said, Hey, you know, we vaccinated per the schedule. I did it myself, and that pet still came down with Parvo, which is rare. The vaccine company, you know, they stand behind their vaccineand they say, well, you know, we're going to pay for treatment. We want this pet to get better."

That's true of any properly administered medication, not just vaccine, but it does require the documentation a vet is able to provide.

"When you're buying like heartworm medicine, flea and tick from those big box stores, so say Chewy or Amazon or wherever it may be," Miller said. One, we as your veterinarian can't document that you've been giving that medicine appropriately, that it came from somewhere that is a safe place. Like vaccines that you could get over the counter somewhere, you know, we don't always know that they're stored appropriately. So straight into the refrigerator, you know, they haven't been sitting out on a truck. At the veterinarian's office, right, our shipments come regularly. They go straight into the refrigerator, but we don't always know that with different stores that things are stored properly or get into the fridge at the right time or they're handled right. Flea and tick and heartworm medicine, if you're getting it from your veterinarian's office and your pet say gets heartworm, but we can show, Hey, they've been getting the heartworm medicine. They've been giving it appropriately. Your, your pet is that, you know, like 0.1% that maybe gets heartworm, even though they're on heartworm medicine, the company will pay for treatment."

If your pet is not responding to any medication, contact your veterinarian right away, so they can check to see if they need to intervene further.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — This past week was&nbsp;<a href="https://ncsrsafety.org/stop-on-red-week-2024" target="_blank">National Stop on Red Week</a>. Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas says the statistics on the danger of red-light running are surprising.

"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that a little bit more than 1,100 people were killed and more than 107,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running in 2022," Steward said. "The number of fatalities represents a nearly 4% increase over the prior year and a nearly 22% jump compared to 2017 numbers."

The Kansas statistics are smaller, but still larger than hoped.

"According to the most recent crash data from KDOT, running a red light or disregarding signs and signals were noted as a contributing crash circumstance more than 3500 times on crashes on Kansas roads," Steward said.&nbsp;

Among drivers involved in fatal, red-light-running, multiple-vehicle crashes in 2022, the red-light runners were more likely than other drivers to be male, to be younger and to have prior crashes or alcohol-impaired driving convictions, according to IIHS.

"It's happening everywhere," Steward said. "Whether people are just not paying attention to the road, or thinking they can race through a red light and not have to stop, it can be very dangerous, if you're hitting a vehicle coming across the intersection."

IIHS research has shown that red-light cameras reduce the fatal red-light running crash rate of large cities by 21% and the rate of all types of fatal crashes at signalized intersections by 14%. Well-publicized camera programs can discourage would-be violators who may be less willing to risk a citation than they were to risk a life.

AAA: Red light running can be fatal

"What they've found out is there's a drug, Ozempic, is often used for diabetes and it also can help with heart disease, the risk of heart disease, but they're finding it can also protect the brain," Vann said. "That's super exciting because in this world, I mean, a lot of people do take that med, so how great would that be?"

The specific finding is that GLP-1 drug liraglutide may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s: Phase 2b results suggest the drug may slow cognitive decline by as much as 18% in one year, prompting the lead researcher to note that it could protect the brain, much like statins protect the heart. In addition, testing for Alzheimer's is also advancing.&nbsp;

"They're talking about blood tests that are 90 percent accurate, which is going to cut down on the time that people have to wait for, you know, getting their self in with a neurologist or trying to do those tests," Vann said. "It's going to cut that down and it's 90 percent accurate in identifying patients with cognitive symptoms at a primary care and specialized memory care clinic. "

Once they are confirmed, blood tests could improve the accuracy of, and access to, diagnosis in primary care and specialist centers and enhance recruitment for Alzheimer’s clinical trials and also slash wait times for Alzheimer’s disease assessment and treatment.&nbsp; Further, there are diet changes that can reduce dementia risk, too.

"Replacing one serving of processed red meat every day with one serving of nuts can lower the risk of dementia by 20%," Vann said. "Examples of processed red meat include bacon, hot dogs, and sausage. So rather, rather than eating that kind of stuff, maybe chicken, rather than cooking with vegetable oil, we cook with olive oil. There are simple ways that we can adjust our diet to kind of make it a heart healthy, you know, cause we do say what's good for your heart is always good for your brain."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Melissa Gutierrez and Ashley Murphy with Redemption Animal Rescue said their mission right now is to help out the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

"A lot of people probably know shelters and rescues for that matter are overflowing," Murphy said. "Unfortunately, oftentimes that means tough decisions have to be made by the shelters by no fault of their own, and so we want to try to help them with reducing the number of animals in their care, helping to get them out of there into a more comfortable environment that will really help them shine and find a good home."

The way they are helping is through fostering pets.

"Fostering a pet means that we are not housing them in a facility," Gutierrez said. "They actually go into a foster's personal home and they are cared for and loved and just basically shown how to be a pet in a home. During that time, we start advertising them and look for their forever home."

Foster relationships really depend on the needs of the pet.

"Sometimes we can have them in there for a few days, Murphy and Gutierrez said," Sometimes it's a few weeks. Sometimes it's a few months. I've heard of fosters being in other rescues care for years. It just depends on the dog. Right now, adoptions are pretty low, I think, all across the country."
