The Hutchinson City Council will meet tonight with an agenda that includes proclamations, financial approvals, and several key business items.&nbsp;

The mayor and council members will begin by proclaiming Aug. 22, as Antique Tractor Preservation Day in the city.&nbsp;

On the consent agenda, council will consider approval of:&nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp; Minutes from the Aug. 5 council meeting.&nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp; An appropriation ordinance totaling $2,313,179.29.&nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp; The July city financial report.&nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp; The appointment of Joseph Kelber to the Airport Advisory Committee, filling a vacant seat through Dec. 31.&nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp; Resolutions authorizing special events in the designated entertainment district for the upcoming 2025 Brewfest and SW Bricktown Fiesta events.&nbsp;

Among the business items, the council will consider an ordinance authorizing the issuance of $1.7 million in general obligation bonds to fund repairs on the Woody Seat Avenue C Bridge. The project includes full-depth repairs to the center median and outside barriers, bridge deck patching, a concrete overlay, as well as improvements to lighting and pedestrian pathways. City staff is recommending approval of the bond issuance.&nbsp;

The council will also consider a resolution to schedule a public hearing for Oct. 7 regarding the creation of a Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District and adoption of a related development plan.&nbsp;

Under new business, the council will hear an update on the Woody Seat Project and review a request for a zoning change at the northwest corner of 23rd Avenue and Lorraine Street. The proposal seeks to rezone the property from R-5 High Density Residential District to C-1 Office Commercial District to allow for construction of a car wash. The Hutchinson Planning Commission unanimously voted to deny the request at its July 22 meeting.&nbsp;

The council will also consider a request for proposals for management services for Memorial Hall. &nbsp;

Hutchinson City Council to consider bridge bonds, zoning request

Hutch Post has learned that a subcontractor has been allowed to step away from the ongoing Woodie Seat Project.

Phase II of the project, which began earlier this spring, is expected to be completed by March 2026. The work will connect Hutchinson to South Hutchinson, continuing a major infrastructure improvement effort.

When contacted, the subcontractor confirmed to Hutch Post that they were given the option to either remain on the project or walk away. They elected to remove themselves.

Jessica Woodyard, Public Communications Director for the City of Hutchinson, said the city has been in communication with the general contractor overseeing the work. According to her, the contractor indicated that some decisions needed to be made regarding the project. Woodyard added that the contractor has already vetted a new subcontractor to step in and continue the work.

Woodyard noted that a presentation on the Woodie Seat project will be made at Tuesday evening's city council meeting.&nbsp; That meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp;

Subcontractor changed on Woodie Seat Phase II project 

YODER – Yoder Heritage Day is set to bring thousands of visitors to town this Saturday, Aug. 23, with a full schedule of family-friendly activities, live music, horse demonstrations, and a fireworks finale.

The celebration kicks off early with a pancake and sausage feed at 6 a.m. at the downtown Pavilion. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy food vendors, open shops and restaurants, and a variety of activities highlighting the Amish and rural traditions of the Yoder community.

A parade beginning mid-morning is one of the day’s main attractions. Unlike most parades, horses lead the procession, reflecting the agricultural and equestrian heritage of the community. The parade typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and features local businesses, floats, and plenty of excitement for children.

Music will fill the day with performances by several groups. The Color Green Band will play country gospel at 8:30 a.m., followed by Close to Land, a local up-and-coming band, at 11:45 a.m. The evening entertainment features the Country Road Ramblers, an eight-member group from southern Indiana specializing in bluegrass, country, and gospel, performing at dusk.

Heritage Day also showcases horse-related events throughout the day, including draft horse plowing demonstrations, a visiting horse drill team from Ohio featuring eight Friesian horses, a horse fun show, and pony rides for children.

For kids, the always-popular pedal pull begins at 1 p.m., with sign-ups starting at noon. Other attractions include pony rides, a kids’ play area, and historical exhibits hosted by the Yoder Historical Society, displaying old photos and drawings of the community.

The afternoon will feature horsepower of another kind with working tractor pulls, antique tractor displays, and truck pulls, drawing large crowds of spectators.

As the day winds down, families can enjoy food from a wide range of vendors—including barbecue, turkey legs, and Pronto Pups—before gathering for the evening concert and fireworks show that traditionally closes the festival.

Organizers expect as many as 10,000 visitors to attend this year’s event, boosted by cooler weather with temperatures forecast around 85 degrees. Admission is free, thanks to the support of more than 80 local sponsors.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas is making history today, honoring the voices, vision, and impact of women in sports media with the first-ever observance of Women in Sports Broadcasting Day.&nbsp;

The day was proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly at the urging of KSN-TV sports anchor and reporter Asia Cymone Smith, whose advocacy turned a personal mission into a statewide recognition. For Smith, the proclamation is more than a ceremonial gesture, it’s a statement of value in an industry where women still make up just 38% of sports broadcasting roles in Kansas, according to a review of recent staff directories from stations in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City.&nbsp;

“It’s something that felt surreal, something that I’d been thinking about for a long time,” Smith said. “I wanted to make sure that women, us hard-working women who are also putting in work here, are recognized. This is a testament to the recognition and the work we’ve put in. And it highlights contributions of the former women in sports broadcasting and the ones to come.”&nbsp;

Smith, who also serves as Miss Kansas USA, has made women in sports broadcasting a central part of her public platform. She operates a mentorship initiative called Girls Talk Game, aimed at uplifting young girls who aspire to careers in the field through school visits, group sessions and one-on-one coaching. “I want to be the help that I always wish I had when I first got started,” she said. “I want to be that person that teaches them the ropes so they don’t have to struggle and so they have the same opportunities to learn and get the knowledge they need to succeed.”&nbsp;

That desire was shaped by her own experiences. Early in her career, she was once told, “We’re not here to hold your hand or teach you the ropes.” 

It was a moment that stayed with her, and one she vowed not to repeat with the next generation. 

“For every little girl who really is watching the TV news and sees us, I want them to know that it’s possible, no matter what other people tell you, when they tell you, you don’t belong in the industry,” Smith said. “Those are comments we get all the time. And I want them to know those people can’t define your success.”&nbsp;

The proclamation also honors the women who have inspired others on the national stage. It names Kansas-connected journalists such as Becky Dixon, the first woman to co-host ABC’s Wide World of Sports; Aminia Smith, a former sports journalist in Lawrence now hosting ESPN’s SportsCenter; and Kendra Douglas, a former Wichita sports anchor now working as an NBA sideline reporter. Smith said seeing them succeed at such high levels serves as proof of what’s possible. “They’re inspirations to us who are sitting here today,” she said.&nbsp;

Joining Smith in celebrating the day are KAKE-TV sports director Micaela Dea and KWCH-TV multimedia journalist Rachel Hallam. Though they work at competing stations, the three regularly cross paths on the sidelines, at press conferences and in locker rooms, and have forged a bond over shared experiences. 

“We see each other all the time,” Dea said. “I knew from the onset of joining this career I wanted to be one of those women that helped other women. If I could have my small part in making that easier for the next woman, that’s amazing. And of course, I want to pay tribute to all the other women before us that have literally trailblazed the way.”&nbsp;

Dea, who became KAKE’s first female sports director last year, said she is encouraged by how far the industry has come. “I can’t imagine where it will be in the next twenty years or the next couple of decades,” she said. “But I definitely am proud to be one of those women in sports that loves to empower other women.”&nbsp;

Hallam said the observance is a meaningful acknowledgment of both the progress made and the challenges that remain. “It means everything,” Hallam said. “It’s hard to be in this industry in the first place, and then how hard it is to be a woman in this industry. Just for everybody to finally recognize that, not just ourselves and not just the other women that are in this industry, but to know that it is still a growing industry and we still have opportunities laid out in front of us.”&nbsp;

Smith said she hopes today’s recognition sparks more opportunities for women in leadership roles, production and high-profile analyst positions in men’s sports. “There’s a lot of leadership positions I think can still be filled,” she said. “Women have completely trailblazed and transformed the sideline reporter role. But why not have those same broadcasters be analysts for the NBA and for the NFL? Our perspective is important and should be shown, too.” She pointed to growing momentum in women’s sports coverage, from WNBA expansion to record-breaking college softball and volleyball crowds, as proof that the appetite is there for more women’s voices. “I think it’s continuing to grow, and that’s great to see,” she said.&nbsp;

While Women in Sports Broadcasting Day is new, those celebrating it hope it becomes an annual touchpoint for progress. “I hope every girl watching sees this and thinks, ‘That can be me,’” Smith said. “Because it absolutely can.”&nbsp;

The proclamation urges Kansans to join in recognizing the achievements of women in sports media and to support ongoing efforts toward equality in the profession. For Smith, Dea and Hallam, that means continuing to show up for each other, and for the young women they hope will follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;

“We’re supposed to be competitors,” Hallam said, “but we’re constantly having each other’s backs. That’s what makes this day so important, it’s a reminder that we’re here, we can do our job, and we’re not going anywhere.”&nbsp;

Firefighters rescued three pets from a burning home Saturday afternoon after a blaze broke out on Halsey Drive.

According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 4:40 p.m. to find heavy fire on the back side of a single-story house. Firefighters quickly launched an exterior attack to contain the flames before moving inside to search the residence.

During their search, crews located three pets trapped inside. One dog had to be given oxygen after being pulled from the home, but all three animals survived. No residents were home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes. Crews then remained on scene to check for hotspots and assist with the investigation. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Three Pets Rescued in Hutchinson House Fire

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall is on the road this month as part of his 100-stop tour across Kansas, meeting with residents, farmers, and business leaders to discuss key issues facing the state.

Marshall said one of the highlights of the tour so far has been visiting with agricultural producers, including a stop at the Reno County Farm Bureau. He noted that while many grain farmers are struggling with low commodity prices and high interest rates, there are bright spots in the beef and dairy industries.

“We finished up last night in Reno County with a big, optimistic crowd,” Marshall said. “Farmers are under pressure with rising loan costs and poor wheat and corn prices, but there’s hope with new trade deals and support programs like updated Title I reference prices.”

A key theme of Marshall’s stops is mental health, particularly in rural areas. He cited alarming statistics, including that more farmers today die by suicide than from farm accidents.

“Mental illness and addiction are in the same bucket of issues,” Marshall said. “We’re seeing an epidemic of mental health challenges in youth, in mothers after childbirth, and in farming families. Community health centers, like Prairie View, are doing a great job responding to people in crisis.”

Marshall also highlighted Kansas’ manufacturing strength, pointing to demand for American-made products and challenges finding enough workers to meet it. He said provisions in what he calls the “big, beautiful bill” – such as removing taxes on overtime pay – are helping ease the strain.

The senator spent part of Friday visiting Hutchinson Community College, where he touted new flexibility in federal Pell Grants that allow short-term training programs to qualify for assistance.

“Not everyone wants a four-year degree,” Marshall said. “Kansas community and technical colleges are training welders, electricians, and health care workers who can start jobs earning $60,000 to $80,000 a year with little to no debt.”

Marshall said the tour will continue through Labor Day weekend before he returns to Washington, where Congress faces a September 30 deadline to fund the federal government.

HUTCHINSON — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/7aeaf800-fb59-44d2-8983-9179d6701101">After months of being out-of-network</a>, Hutchinson Clinic and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas have reached a new agreement that will bring the clinic back into the BCBSKS network starting Sept. 1.

In a joint statement, the two organizations said:

“We are pleased to announce Hutchinson Clinic will return to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas network on September 1st, 2025. We understand how important it is for our patients to have access to local providers and services they know and trust."

Hutchinson Clinic, a physician-owned practice serving Reno County and surrounding areas, had previously been an in-network provider for BCBS members for many years. That changed on Jan. 1, 2025, when contract negotiations broke down over reimbursement rates, and the clinic left the BCBS Marketplace network.
The move prompted concern from patients, many of whom faced higher out-of-pocket costs to continue seeing their longtime providers.

Clinic leaders at the time cited unsustainable payment rates as the reason for the departure, while reaffirming their commitment to keeping care local. The clinic’s Patient Advocacy Center worked with BCBSKS members to help them understand their costs and options.

Starting September 1, BCBSKS members will again be able to receive in-network benefits at Hutchinson Clinic locations. The change applies to both existing patients and new BCBSKS members seeking care from the clinic’s physicians and specialists.

A season removed from just the second playoff appearance in school history, the Fairfield Falcons are embracing expectations and leaning on a core group of upperclassmen to chase something even rarer, a district championship.

“We return a lot of experience on both sides of the ball and are looking to build on an incredibly successful 2024 season,” said head coach Kyle Finder, who enters his third season leading Fairfield and 11th overall as a head coach.&nbsp;

The Falcons bring back eight starters from last fall and will again be powered by a strong running game, returning six of eight offensive starters. Key returners include Chase Combs, Gavin Foster, Steven Nisly, Brodie Snodgrass, Lukas Schwab, Lane Schwab, Gage Brown, William McIver, and Braeden Witt.

“We hope to continue our strong running game and improve our ability to throw the ball,” Finder said.

On defense, six starters also return with an emphasis on improving fundamentals, especially tackling and reads. Fairfield will also get help from promising newcomers like Jalen Busick and Dominic Sader.

But perhaps no one embodies the Falcons’ toughness and resolve more than senior Chase Combs, who lost his home in the Plevna tornado earlier this year.

“He hasn’t let it slow his work ethic this summer,” Finder said. “He has had near perfect attendance at all summer workouts and practices.”

With district title aspirations in their sights, something Fairfield hasn’t accomplished since 1995, the 2025 squad enters the fall with both talent and motivation.

“It’s a fun bunch of guys to coach,” Finder said. “They work hard, and many of them have meaningful varsity experience.”

The sessions are part of a monthly initiative supported by StartUp Hutch to connect local entrepreneurs with expert resources. Attendance is free, but spots are limited.

Small Business development consulting event set for Friday 

With a new head coach, a battle-tested senior class, and a hunger to rewrite expectations, the Nickerson Panthers are entering the 2025 football season with energy and purpose.

“We are very excited about this upcoming season,” said first-year head coach Parker Bruce, who also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator. “Our boys are rebranding what it means to be a Nickerson Panther, and our staff is extremely proud of them for that.”

Bruce inherits a veteran group, including nine returning offensive starters and multiple three-year varsity players, led by senior quarterback Kristopher Monroe. A multi-sport athlete and state-qualifying wrestler, Monroe enters his third year as the Panthers’ starter and is stepping into a major leadership role.

“Kristopher is a key factor to our season,” Bruce said. “He’s looking towards a much larger leadership role than he’s used to, but he has done a great job so far.”

The Panthers will feature a physical, simplified offensive scheme designed to play fast and adapt to tough Kansas weather. Monroe will be supported by Rylan Morrell, a powerful junior running back; Austin Peterson, a 6-foot-3 senior receiver with elite speed; and a veteran offensive line led by Zein Rector, Atton Nelson, and Gabe Taylor.

“Our offense is a hard-nose scheme that fits Kansas football,” Bruce said. “Our boys have bought into the ideology.”

Senior tight end/linebacker Riley Brawner returns as a cornerstone on both sides of the ball. A three-year starter and three-sport athlete, Brawner is being recruited at the collegiate level and anchors the defense from his middle linebacker position.

“He is a legit collegiate prospect at 6'2”, 210-215,” Bruce said.

On defense, Bruce said the team is focused on fast, disciplined play. With multiple players entering their third or fourth year in the system, the Panthers are confident in their execution. Depth up front will be critical, especially with several linemen playing both ways.

“We still need to find some depth up front to give our big boys a break,” Bruce said.

Several new faces are expected to contribute, including Dalton Wakefield-Baker, a returning senior who has impressed at running back, fullback, and linebacker after taking a year off. Tyler Morrell, Riley Spurlock, and underclassmen like Connor Bower, Kagyn Rice, Connor White, and Elijah Trass could all play valuable roles this fall.

But for Bruce, the most exciting part of year one is the team’s chemistry.

“The bond between the players from top down has been impressive,” he said. “Our older guys are taking the younger ones in, and showing them what ‘team’ means.”

The Panthers are eager to shed their old image and establish a new standard under Bruce and his staff, which includes offensive coordinator Michael Hill, quarterbacks coach Kyle Vedder, and others. Nickerson has went 1-8 each of the last four seasons, going 4-40 over the last five years. The last winning season for the Panthers came in 2017, a 7-3 mark under current Hutchinson High School coach, Mike Vernon.

“Come Week 1, we will not look like the stereotypical Nickerson Panther team,” Bruce said. “It gives our players a chance to showcase multiple different skill sets that can help better their opportunities for college.”

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 1st on the north side.

The 1929 flood completely destroyed the Home Theatre at Avenue B and Main. Hutchinson then needed to re-establish a theatrical arts center.

In 1931, the Fox Theatre was born. The first photo shows the Fox Theatre at 18 E. 1st on opening day June 8, 1931.

Ed Haas was the first manager. Needing more space, mainly for access from the Wiley Building, a third story was added to the structure. The second photo shows this addition being built in 1946 by Foy Construction.

The third photo shows all this being completed in 1954, also showing Wiley's, Rhodes Drugs and Leonida's Hollywood Grill.

The fourth photo, also from 1954, shows the marquee during a big promotion, giving away a 1954 Ford Tudor during the showing of the movie "Top Banana" with Phil Silvers.

The fifth photo shows the Fox along with the Karmelkorn Shoppe and the Hi-Note Record Shop in 1962.

The sixth photo shows another special promotion featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales and beer rig in 1964.

The seventh photo shows the Fox in a color slide in 1975.

A community effort to remodel it started in 1993, resulting in a $4.5 million restoration. The eighth photo shows the interior remodeling, complete with scaffolding.

It reopened in 1999. The ninth photo shows the Fox Theatre today, still at 18 E. 1st, just about to celebrate its 95th year with Josh Davies, the current manager.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Fox Theatre - Vol. 135

In the wake of the passing of Captain Jim Lovell, the Cosmosphere is uniquely positioned to honor the memory of the legendary astronaut by sharing with guests some of the most significant artifacts from his storied career. 

“The Cosmosphere was saddened to learn of Captain Lovell’s passing. He was an icon and true American hero. The Cosmosphere is proud to carry on his legacy through the display of several artifacts associated with the missions including the Apollo 13 Command Module, Odyssey,” said Jim Remar, President and CEO at the Cosmosphere.

 Along with the Apollo 13 Command Module, Odyssey, is Captain Lovell’s spacesuit, both central pieces in telling the story of his courage and leadership during one of NASA’s most challenging missions.

 In addition to these historic artifacts, a memorial book has been placed in the museum by the display for guests to share personal reflections, memories, and messages of respect for Captain Lovell’s enduring legacy.

 The Cosmosphere invites all visitors to experience this tribute, reflect on Captain Lovell’s extraordinary contributions to space exploration, and be inspired by the perseverance, teamwork, and ingenuity that defined his career.

Cosmosphere honors Capt. Jim Lovell's legacy 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City Manager Enrico Villegas has been recognized nationally as one of the “Top 10 City Managers for 2025” by Government Business Review.

The honor follows nominations from readers and a detailed evaluation by the magazine’s editorial team, which sought out leaders making significant contributions to government leadership, public administration, and community development.

While the award highlights Villegas’ leadership, he emphasized that the recognition reflects the work of the entire City of Hutchinson team.

“This is a shared achievement,” Villegas said. “I appreciate the council’s tireless support for me and our shared vision for Hutchinson. Their trust and commitment make it possible for us to move forward together as one team.”

City officials noted that the team’s commitment to delivering exceptional public services and engaging with the community every day is the foundation for the city’s continued progress.

Congratulations were extended to Villegas and all city employees for their dedication and passion in serving Hutchinson.

With back-to-back district titles, a strong senior class, and a near-perfect 2024 regular season behind them, the Moundridge Wildcats enter the 2025 football campaign determined to continue their climb in Class 1A.

“We will look to continue to develop as a team in our new classification,” said head coach Tyler O’Connor, who is 16-2 entering his third season at the helm. “We will have a large group of seniors in which we will rely heavily on.”

Moundridge finished 7-1 last fall, falling in the first round of the playoffs to Trinity Catholic. But with numerous returning starters and one of the most dynamic athletes in the classification, expectations remain high.

The 6-foot, 170-pound senior racked up 47 receptions for 718 yards and 11 touchdowns, while adding three interceptions on defense and two punt return scores. He earned first-team All-League honors at wide receiver, defensive back, and returner, and was also named 1st Team All-1A WR by the Wichita Eagle and 1st Team All-1A Athlete by Sports in Kansas.The Wildcats will operate their option offense behind a large, physical line led by returning starters Layton Schmidt (LT), Logan Wulf (NG/OG), and Thomas Jenkins (LG/DE), who tallied 33 tackles and three tackles for loss last season. Cyrus Blough, one of the top specialists in 1A, also returns after earning All-League and All-State honors as both a kicker and punter.Senior Paul Grill, who rushed for 328 yards and five touchdowns and added 52 tackles at linebacker, gives Moundridge a hard-nosed, two-way playmaker in the backfield. Other key returning contributors include Logan Greenwalt (RB/FS), Brayden Elmore (CB), and Fynn Burge (WR/CB), who missed time last season due to injury but is expected to be a difference-maker.“We will need a strong group of leaders to lead us to improve week in and week out,” O’Connor said. “New leaders will need to emerge in key roles and some players will be asked to play new positions.”Among the new names expected to contribute are Owen Colwell (QB/LB), Josh Koehn (LB/ATH), Tione Wilson (LB/RB), and Mav Logue (TE/LB).Defensively, Moundridge will again run its aggressive 3-4 scheme, anchored by a linebacker group that will be a blend of veteran presence and new energy.The Wildcats’ 2025 schedule again features key district showdowns with Remington, Marion, Sedgwick, and Inman, as well as HOA matchups with Bennington and Sterling.“Our strength lies in our senior class and the experience we return,” O’Connor said. “But we’ll need new leaders and strong execution from those stepping into bigger roles.”With skill, speed, and a proven winning culture, Moundridge enters the season as a legitimate threat in Class 1A, and determined to make a deeper playoff push.<h2>2025 Schedule</h2>Sept. 5 vs. Bennington Sept. 12 vs. Sterling Sept. 19 at Medicine Lodge Sept. 26 at Herington Oct. 3 at Remington Oct. 10 vs. Marion Oct. 17 at Sedgwick Oct. 24 vs. Inman
