The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team closes a three-game homestand and opens the second trip to through the Jayhawk Conference on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The No. 19-ranked Blue Dragons (15-3, 10-2 Jayhawk) entertains the Dodge City Conquistadors (7-11, 5-7 Jayhawk) at 7:30 p.m. in the second meeting of the season.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s first trip through the Jayhawk saw it win 10 of 12 games. The Blue Dragons sit in third place in the KJCCC, just one game behind No. 3 Barton and No. 12 Cowley, the only two teams to defeat the Dragons in conference play this season.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons averaged 85.8 points offensively in the first half of league play and allowed a solid 74.0 points per game. &nbsp;

The Dragons had a tremendous response to last Wednesday’s 22-point loss to now-No. 3 Barton with a resounding 85-64 victory over Garden City on Saturday at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons shot 47.7 percent and hit nine 3-pointers, building a 47-30 lead at halftime. Kamryn Thomas popped four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points. Dallas Whitney, Kernan Bundy and Kobe Smith combined for 39 of Hutchinson’s 45 points off the bench. The Dragons limited a hot-shooting Garden City team to 35.6 percent overall, only 6 of 26 from 3-point range.&nbsp;

Dodge City has had a full week off since last playing. The Conquistadors dropped their third straight game after a 109-72 loss to Garden City last Wednesday.&nbsp;

Avnoor Bhullar had 15 points to lead five Conquistadors in double figures against Garden City. The Busters stung Dodge City hitting 16 of 27 from 3-point range.&nbsp;

Thomas nailed a career-high five 3-pointers in the Blue Dragons’ 89-73 victory over Dodge City on November 18 at the DC3 Student Event Center. Thomas has 23 points to lead four Blue Dragons in double figures. Valentino Simon had 18 points, J.P. Ricks had 16 points and Zoe Holman had 12 points. Chevalier Emery had 20 points to pace the Conquistadors.&nbsp;

Wednesday’s meeting will be the 193rd between Hutchinson and Dodge City in a series that has been continuous since 1935. The Blue Dragons own a 125-68 all-time series record over the Conquistadors, going 59-28 against Dodge City all-time in Hutchinson and 50-23 at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Hutchinson will have its second bye week of the KJCCC season on Saturday.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team opens the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition with a nationally ranked battle against the Dodge City Conquistadors.&nbsp;

The No. 4-ranked Blue Dragons (18-0, 12-0 KJCCC) will meet No. 12 Dodge City (16-2, 10-2) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:15 p.m.&nbsp;

This will be Hutchinson’s third matchup against a nationally ranked opponent this season. The Blue Dragons defeated No. 11 Dodge City 72-70 on November 18 in Dodge City and No. 3 Butler 83-54 on January 3 in El Dorado.&nbsp;

As the second half of the KJCCC season begins, the Blue Dragons lead second-place Dodge City by two games, Butler by three games and Barton by four games.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s 18-0 start was in serious jeopardy on November 18 at Dodge City. The Blue Dragons trailed by 10 points with 3:20 to play in the fourth quarter at the DC3 Student Events Center. Journey Armstead hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play to give the Dragons the lead and Hutchinson rallied to win 72-70.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday following an 85-64 victory over Garden City at the Sports Arena. Leading by one point at halftime, the Blue Dragons outscored the Busters 31-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Monae Duffy had 17 points and Kiki Smith had 16 to pace the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

Dodge City had a full week to rest in preparation for Wednesday. The Conquistadors defeated Garden City 85-77 last Wednesday. Six players scored in double figures led by Paris Santacatarina with 17 points. Shornia Preston had 16 points.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will have to defend the No. 1 3-point shooting team in the Jayhawk Conference in Dodge City. The Conquistadors shoot 38.5 percent from distance, which is No. 5 in the nation, averaging 11.1 made 3’s per game. Earlier this season against Coffeyville, Dodge City blistered the Red Ravens with 23 3-pointers in 35 attempts.&nbsp;

Wednesday’s game will be the 106th in series history between Hutchinson and Dodge City.&nbsp;

🏀 WBB: No. 4 HutchCC hosts No. 12 Dodge City in Sports Arena Wednesday

For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College softball team start a season as a nationally ranked team.&nbsp;

Coming off a Jayhawk Conference championship and Region VI runner-up season that netted a school-record 44 wins, the 2024 Blue Dragons open the season ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings, which were released on Monday.&nbsp;

Hutchinson started last season off as the No. 17 team, which broke a 35-year drought of being ranked in the preseason poll. Hutchinson has now been ranked in 15 consecutive national polls dating back to April 18, 2022. That’s the longest consecutive run in the national rankings since being ranked in 14-straight polls in 2018.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons return 11 total players from last year’s KJCCC championship team that went 44-8. &nbsp;

Among the returnees are all-Jayhawk second-team performers Olivia Sandoval and Jaleigh Darnell and honorable mention selections Korri Lies and Alexis Mastin.&nbsp;

Only two Jayhawk Conference teams are represented in the preseason rankings. Defending Region VI Champion Butler is No. 14 to start the season.&nbsp;

Hutchinson’s season opener is scheduled for Saturday against the Ottawa University JV at Fun Valley. A decision will be made on the status of that game because of field conditions will be made later in the week.&nbsp;

 </figure>For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College softball team start a season as a nationally ranked team.&nbsp;Coming off a Jayhawk Conference championship and Region VI runner-up season that netted a school-record 44 wins, the 2024 Blue Dragons open the season ranked No. 17 in the preseason rankings, which were released on Monday.&nbsp;Hutchinson started last season off as the No. 17 team, which broke a 35-year drought of being ranked in the preseason poll. Hutchinson has now been ranked in 15 consecutive national polls dating back to April 18, 2022. That’s the longest consecutive run in the national rankings since being ranked in 14-straight polls in 2018.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons return 11 total players from last year’s KJCCC championship team that went 44-8. &nbsp;Among the returnees are all-Jayhawk second-team performers Olivia Sandoval and Jaleigh Darnell and honorable mention selections Korri Lies and Alexis Mastin.&nbsp;Only two Jayhawk Conference teams are represented in the preseason rankings. Defending Region VI Champion Butler is No. 14 to start the season.&nbsp;Hutchinson’s season opener is scheduled for Saturday against the Ottawa University JV at Fun Valley. 🥎 Blue Dragons ranked No. 17 in NJCAA preseason poll

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team’s 1-1 week last week saw it drop five spots in the latest NJCAA Division I National Rankings, which were released on Monday. &nbsp;

The Blue Dragons fell five spots to No. 19 after a 102-80 loss to now No. 3 Barton and an 85-64 victory over Garden City last week.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls dating back to the first regular-season poll in November. The Blue Dragons are 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.&nbsp;

Now 15-3 overall, the Blue Dragons are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Hutchinson has just one game this week and it will wrap up a three-game homestand as the Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Former No. 2 Daytona state and No. 3 Vincennes both suffered losses last week to reshape the Top 5. South Plains remained No. 1 with Mineral Area now at No. 2, Barton at No. 3, Chipola at No. 4 and Daytona State at No. 5.&nbsp;

Cowley remained No. 12 this week. Butler dropped two spots to No. 21.&nbsp;

 </figure>Courtesy of HutchCC AthleticsThe Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team’s 1-1 week last week saw it drop five spots in the latest NJCAA Division I National Rankings, which were released on Monday. &nbsp;The Blue Dragons fell five spots to No. 19 after a 102-80 loss to now No. 3 Barton and an 85-64 victory over Garden City last week.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls dating back to the first regular-season poll in November. The Blue Dragons are 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.&nbsp;Now 15-3 overall, the Blue Dragons are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Hutchinson has just one game this week and it will wrap up a three-game homestand as the Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;Former No. 2 Daytona state and No. 3 Vincennes both suffered losses last week to reshape the Top 5. South Plains remained No. 1 with Mineral Area now at No. 2, Barton at No. 3, Chipola at No. 4 and Daytona State at No. 5.&nbsp;Cowley remained No. 12 this week. 🏀 MBB: HutchCC drops to No. 19 in NJCAA rankings

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team climbed in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings for a third-straight week, moving up to No. 4 in the latest rankings released on Monday.&nbsp;

Now 18-0 after victories over Barton and Garden City last week, the Blue Dragons match their highest national ranking since Nov. 18, 2022.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons have just one game this week, but it will be a Top 15 matchup as No. 12 Dodge City comes to the Sports Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to open the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons moved up to No. 4 after previous-No. 2 Collin lost 71-69 in overtime to No. 4 McLennan on Saturday in Waco, Texas.&nbsp;

The Top 5 now has Northwest Florida State, Gulf Coast State, McLennan, Hutchinson and Collin.&nbsp;

Dodge City (16-2, 10-2) has won five games in a row entering Wednesday’s game at the Sports Arena and moved up one spot. Butler went 1-1 last week, getting upset by Cowley in Arkansas City on Sunday, dropped to No. 18. Barton continues to receive votes.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked in eight consecutive polls after not being ranked in the 2023-24 preseason poll.&nbsp;

 </figure>Courtesy of HutchCC AthleticsThe Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team climbed in the NJCAA Division I National Rankings for a third-straight week, moving up to No. 4 in the latest rankings released on Monday.&nbsp;Now 18-0 after victories over Barton and Garden City last week, the Blue Dragons match their highest national ranking since Nov. 18, 2022.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons have just one game this week, but it will be a Top 15 matchup as No. 12 Dodge City comes to the Sports Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to open the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition.&nbsp;The Blue Dragons moved up to No. 4 after previous-No. 2 Collin lost 71-69 in overtime to No. 4 McLennan on Saturday in Waco, Texas.&nbsp;The Top 5 now has Northwest Florida State, Gulf Coast State, McLennan, Hutchinson and Collin.&nbsp;Dodge City (16-2, 10-2) has won five games in a row entering Wednesday’s game at the Sports Arena and moved up one spot. Butler went 1-1 last week, getting upset by Cowley in Arkansas City on Sunday, dropped to No. 18. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State has its best ranking in 21 years after the Wildcats moved up to fourth in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">The Associated Press women’s basketball poll</a>&nbsp;on Monday.

The Wildcats, who climbed three spots, were last ranked this high in 2003. They have a key Big 12 Conference showdown Monday night at No. 13 Baylor. Kansas State is missing star center Ayoka Lee, who is out for a few weeks with an ankle injury.

South Carolina remained the unanimous choice at No. 1 in the poll, receiving all 35 votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks cruised to easy wins over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-carolina-kentucky-score-watkins-795dfd2dabdf66bf9183b855ed1bc229">Kentucky</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-carolina-texas-am-score-d4b8611bf7a1a1358613ec975408dc99">Texas A&amp;M</a>. Coach Dawn Staley’s team has a showdown at No. 9 LSU on Thursday night.

There was some shifting in the top 10 this week, with UCLA moving back up to No. 2 after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ucla-colorado-score-c1ee6a585ccbb12b91356de491d782d3">beating Colorado on the road</a>. The Bruins play at No. 16 Utah on Monday night.

The Buffaloes remained in the third spot, thanks to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/colorado-southern-california-score-27899c19eea7a1e820f34a606a36b11a">win over then-No. 6 USC</a>, which fell to 11th after also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/usc-utah-basketball-score-pili-a69061a7c818118d36f32e8f6f938313">losing to Utah</a>.

Iowa dropped to fifth after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-ohio-state-score-caitlin-clark-e55c97b63422a43308d3ec7a992de207">falling in overtime to Ohio State</a>. Hawkeyes star guard Caitlin Clark had a scary moment after the game when she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-caitlin-clark-ohio-state-f853020115abea2a6cc39803022f086b">accidently was run into by a fan</a>&nbsp;who was storming the court to celebrate. Clark said she was OK.

No. 6 Stanford, North Carolina State and UConn followed the Hawkeyes.

Syracuse (22), West Virginia (24) and Oregon State (25) entered the rankings this week while Iowa State, Marquette and UNLV dropped out.

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer became the all-time winningest coach in major college basketball, moving past former Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski on Sunday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vanderveer-record-stanford-oregon-state-score-2f42bcb6be37f805f341bbc61622c43b">when the Cardinal beat Oregon State</a>.

Six teams are within a loss of each other at the top of the ACC standings, with Syracuse and North Carolina at 6-1. Louisville is 5-1. Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and N.C. State all have two losses.

Florida State, which dropped eight spots to No. 23 in the poll, had one loss coming into last week before losing to Syracuse and Virginia.

The same two teams remained at the top amid the poll turmoil.

Reigning national champion Connecticut stayed No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday, receiving 44 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel. No. 2 Purdue got 17 first-place votes.

A loss by Kansas jumbled the rest of the top five.

No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Tennessee all moved up a spot by sweeping two games each last week.

The Jayhawks dropped four spots to No. 7 following a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-west-virginia-basketball-score-9befae4876ac1fa99f6b4a06d5a30a2f" target="_blank">91-85 loss to West Virginia</a>&nbsp;that ended their six-game winning streak in the series.

UConn moved to the top of the poll last week for the first time in 15 years.

The Huskies opened the week with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/uconn-creighton-no-1-score-3b75f323b1e85ffde4fffcb2573d85c5" target="_blank">lopsided win over No. 17 Creighton</a>&nbsp;in David Clingan’s return from a right foot injury. UConn then&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/villanova-uconn-score-9f7ed81be617159864cb34616e8c8ed6" target="_blank">edged Villanova 66-65</a>&nbsp;in a physical game that had coach Dan Hurley talking about jujitsu, Muay Thai and UFC fighting.

“When you get ranked No. 1 — coach talked about it the entire week — it’s like a temporary belt,” UConn’s Alex Karaban said. “You’ve got to continue to protect the belt, protect the heavyweight championship.”

The Boilermakers opened their week with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/purdue-indiana-basketball-score-edey-94f6eff2cc3e7670c22cb74497e1ba40" target="_blank">an 87-66 rout</a>&nbsp;of rival Indiana and followed with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-hawkeyes-purdue-boilermakers-score-edey-a0d1d65650ddeb249f2f1471108487d4" target="_blank">a 14-point win</a>&nbsp;over Iowa. Purdue big man Zach Edey had another dominating week, finishing with 33 points and 14 rebounds against Indiana, and 30 points and 18 rebounds against Iowa.

“It’s just different with him,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “When he gets deep position, it’s hard (to defend him).”

The Big 12 still leads the nation with seven ranked teams despite Kansas State dropping out. The Big East, Southeastern, Big Ten and Mountain West conferences all had three ranked teams.

The Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences had two ranked teams, and one each for the Pac-12 and Atlantic-10.

Coming off a tough home loss on Wednesday, the No. 14-ranked Hutchinson College men's basketball team looks for a return to the win column on Saturday against the Garden City Broncbusters.

The Blue Dragons (14-3, 9-2 Jayhawk Conference) and Broncbusters (11-6, 7-4) are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons enter Saturday's game after a 102-80 loss to No. 6 Barton on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson couldn't recover from a 23-point first-half hole dug by a 6-minute, 26-second scoreless spell.

J.P. Ricks scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Blue Dragons against the Cougars.

Garden City has won 5 of its last 6 games, which includes a 109-72 victory over Dodge City on Wednesday. The Broncbusters shot a Jayhawk Conference-season high 57.7 percent and had three players score at least 20 points - Brody Robinson hit six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points with 11 assists, Braxton Jones had 23 points and Jordan Frazier had 21 points.

Garden City has gone five-straight games with 10 or more 3-pointers, including a season-high 16 on Wednesday against Dodge City. The Busters are shooting 50 percent (64 of 128) from 3-point range over those five games and lead the Jayhawk with 9.9 made 3-pointers per game and are second in the KJCCC in 3-point efficiency at 35.0 percent.

The Busters rank third in the KJCCC in scoring at 82.8 points per game.

Saturday's meeting will be the 193rd all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Garden City in a series that started in 1929. The Blue Dragons lead the overall series 141-51. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The woman. The pony-tailed assassin. The legend, Jackie Stiles.

Small-town Kansas girl Jackie Stiles appreciates any opportunity to make her way closer to home and tell her story. After a stellar collegiate basketball career at Southwestern Missouri State, leading the Lady Bears to the Final Four, and a professional career cut short by injuries, Stiles knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity on and off the court. This message of perseverance and determination was delivered to Hutchinson Public Schools 7th graders on Thursday, January 18th.&nbsp;

Ellen Corey began her Project-Based Learning class passion project about women’s basketball and the WNBA by writing about something she was passionate about and interested in learning more about. “I picked it because it was something I am really passionate about. So many people just talk about men’s basketball. It was important to me to research women who have made an impact on the game of basketball.” said Corey.

Along the way, her research turned toward Jackie Stiles’ renowned basketball career. “I researched statistics of female basketball players, and Jackie Stiles’ numbers caught my eye.” Shandi Webster, a Hutchinson Middle School 7 teacher, encouraged Corey to contact Stiles on her website, which led Stiles on the road to Hutchinson Middle School 7.

Stiles delivers positive message&nbsp;

Addressing the packed auditorium of HMS-7 students and staff, Stiles focused on a positive message about following your dreams and accepting the reality that hard work is required to achieve anything great. Stiles recounted her early basketball days when she had to bribe her siblings to rebound balls to her current business ventures. She relayed stories of four-hour practice sessions to cutting down nets after big wins. “There is not a better feeling in the whole world than when you accomplish a dream,” said Stiles. “Follow your heart and trust your gut.”

She described overcoming adversity as a young athlete from a small town. Claflin, KS, didn’t have opportunities like basketball camps or even a local restaurant. There were times when Stiles’ mother worked multiple jobs to afford camps for her children. Stiles recounted a series of weekends that her father drove her to Kansas City for camps. While being recruited by colleges as a senior in Claflin, neighbors would deliver casseroles as the family hosted home visits by 18 colleges within a span of 19 days.&nbsp;

In 2018 Stiles was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer, ocular melanoma. After treatment, she decided to turn her energy toward actions that aligned with her core values. She pivoted her career away from collegiate coaching and into personal fitness, as she now owns a NexGen Fitness and works as a private personal trainer. Stiles still travels and hosts basketball camps. She boasted a jam-packed camp schedule slated for this summer.&nbsp;

Her message resonated with the crowd, prompting many students to raise their hands eagerly during the allotted time for questions. When asked about her favorite memory from her basketball career, Stiles told stories about bonding with her teammates and taking a limousine to Wendy’s when trying to find a budget-friendly meal while staying at a Ritz-Carlton. Drawing from her varied experience playing and coaching, she encouraged teamwork and selfless actions on and off the court. “You can accomplish so much more when everyone has bought in.”

After the speech, the excitement moved to the gymnasium, where Stiles signed autographs and posed for pictures with the students. Boys and girls alike waited in line for their chance to have “Jackie Stiles #10” sharpied on anything from a warm-up jacket to a basketball.&nbsp;

Corey’s main takeaway from her project is that “women can do anything men can do, if not better. I learned that if you’re truly passionate about something, you have to pursue it relentlessly.”

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team was picked to finish third in the 2024 Jayhawk West championship chase.

The Jayhawk Conference released its annual preseason coaches' poll on Thursday. The Blue Dragons were picked behind Barton and Cloud County.

Blue Dragon baseball will be under new guidance this season as Brock Nehls takes over as Hutchinson's head coach.

Nehls has seven pitches and 12 position players returning from a 30-28 Blue Dragon team in 2023 that was eliminated in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons finished fifth in the Jayhawk West last season.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons return both starting catchers from last season in&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/gunderson_cody_npi8">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;and Collin Cymbalista and starting outfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/bradford_blake_6h1a">Blake Bradford</a>.

Johnson County was picked to win the 2024 Jayhawk East title, while Cowley is picked second and Kansas City is picked third. The rest of the Jayhawk East preseason poll has Fort Scott, Coffeyville, Neosho County, Allen, Highland and Labette.

The Blue Dragons are scheduled to open the season at Hobart-Detter Field on Tuesday, February 6 with a single nine-inning game against the Central Christian JV and a doubleheader against Southeast Community College on Thursday, February 8.

The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk West play on Thursday, March 7 against Garden City at Hobart-Detter Field.

⚾ HutchCC picked 3rd in KJCCC West coaches' poll

The Hutchinson Community College softball team was finished to finish second in the 2024 Jayhawk Conference Division I preseason coaches' poll on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons come off their best season in program history after a 44-8 campaign – the 44 wins are a single-season program record – in 2023 that saw Hutchinson win its first conference title since 1992. The Blue Dragons advanced to the Region VI Tournament championship game.

Blue Dragon head coach Jaime Rose starts her 20th season at Hutchinson this season. She has a record of 571-348 with the Blue Dragons and 609-402 in 21 total seasons coaching.

The Blue Dragons return 11 total players from last season's Jayhawk championship team.

Third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/sball/2023-24/bios/sandoval_olivia_ydnf">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;is the only returning starting infielder. Butler was the preseason pick to win the KJCCC in 2024, then came Hutchinson and Colby. Barton is fourth, followed by Seward County, Dodge City, Garden City, Pratt and Northwest Tech.

The Blue Dragons are scheduled to open 2024 on Saturday, January 27 against the Ottawa University junior varsity at Fun Valley. The Dragons then play eight straight on the road before opening conference play on Thursday, February 22 against the Colby Trojans at Fun Valley.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team meets one of its biggest rivals in a Top 15 national matchup on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Now up to No. 14 in the NJCAA Division I national rankings, the Blue Dragons (14-2, 9-1 Jayhawk Conference) play host to the No. 6-ranked Barton Cougars (15-1, 9-1) at 7:30 p.m.

The last time the Blue Dragons and Cougars met with both teams inside the Top 15 of the NJCAA national rankings was February 14, 2018 when Hutchinson was No. 14 and Barton No. 10. The teams met as ranked teams in the first meeting last season - Hutchinson was No. 9 and Barton was No. 21.

The Blue Dragons open a rare conference three-game homestand on Wednesday. After the battle with the Cougars, Hutchinson takes on high-scoring Garden City on Saturday and then will open the second half of the Jayhawk Conference season with Dodge City on Wednesday, January 24. The Blue Dragons are 9-1 at the Sports Arena this season.

Hutchinson improved to 5-0 in true road games this season after last Saturday's 92-78 victory at Coffeyville.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;keyed a 26-6 first-half run that broke the game open. The Blue Dragons led 53-30 at halftime. Thomas finished with five 3-pointers and a career-high 25 points, while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. J.P. Ricks broke out of a brief scoring slump with 21 points and six assists. The Blue Dragons shot 56.3 percent against the Red Ravens, marking the third-straight game they have shot 50 percent or better.

Since returning from the holiday break, the Blue Dragons have been strong defensively allowing only 59.0 points and 40.3 percent shooting over the last four games.

Barton has reeled off six consecutive victories and are 9-1 in its last 10 games.

Myles Thompson has 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting to lead Barton to a 95-75 KJCCC victory over Dodge City on Saturday at Great Bend. The Cougars shot 54.1 percent for the game and had 46 points in the paint to Dodge City's 22.

Wednesday's matchup will be the 124th in series history that started in 1970. The Blue Dragons own a 91-32 series advantage. Barton has won the last three games in the series.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team opens a stretch of three-straight home games as the defending Region VI champion Barton Cougars starts off the homestand on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

Women’s tipoff at the Sports Arena will be at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Now tied for the sixth-best start in program history at 16-0 (10-0 in the Jayhawk Conference) the Blue Dragons moved into the NJCAA Top 5 for the first time since November 14, 2022 when the Blue Dragons were No. 4.&nbsp;

Hutchinson jumped up one spot in the poll to No. 5 this week after defeating Seward County (69-53) and Coffeyville (58-39) last week.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragon defense, which has allowed only two teams to score 50 or more points in its last nine games, held Coffeyville to an all-time series-low 39 points and 26.5 percent shooting. &nbsp;

Journey Armstead had a season-high 17 points and Akaysha Muggeridge had a career-high 16 points to pace the Blue Dragons offensively against the Red Ravens.&nbsp;

The Cougars have been ranked as high as No. 19 this season, but are currently receiving votes in the NJCAA national rankings at 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the KJCCC.&nbsp;

Hutchinson will be Barton’s second-straight nationally ranked opponent. The Cougars had a second-half lead against No. 14 Dodge City, but the Conquistadors rallied to win 67-60 in Great Bend last Saturday.&nbsp;

Barton’s loss to Dodge City snapped a five-game winning streak. &nbsp;

The Blue Dragons will be playing a second-straight Top 5 Jayhawk Conference defense on Wednesday. Barton is fourth in the KJCCC in points allowed at 56.3 points per game. The Cougars are third in field-goal defense at 32.1 percent allowed.&nbsp;

Following Wednesday’s battle with Barton, the Blue Dragons will play host to Garden City at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and then take on No. 13 Dodge City on Wednesday, January 24 at the Sports Arena in the start of the second half of Jayhawk Conference competition.&nbsp;
