HAYS – Hutchinson Community College freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/thid_david_jvzs">David Thid</a>&nbsp;broke his own school record in the 400-meter hurdles on Wednesday at the FHSU Alex Francis Classic at Fort Hays State University.

Thid led a list of one school record, four event titles, three all-time Top 10 performances and two national qualifiers at the Alex Francis Classic, which was moved from Thursday to Wednesday because of impending severe weather forecast for Thursday.

Thid won the 400-meter hurdles with a Blue Dragon-record time of 51.14 seconds. That beat his own record he set at the KT Woodman Classic by 0.36 seconds.

Thid's 400-meter hurdle record marks the third Blue Dragon outdoor school record and fifth overall track and field record to be broken this season.

The Blue Dragons upped their total of 2024 national qualifiers to 17 on Wednesday.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/roland_ty-rique_n9sc">Ty'Rique Roland</a>&nbsp;qualified in the high jump after placing second with a PR height of 6 feet, 10 inches. That mark ties for the ninth-highest high jump in program history.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/brown_christopher_1wqz">Christopher Brown</a>&nbsp;placed second in the shot put with a national-qualifying mark of 51 feet, 6 inches (15.70 meters). Brown tied for 12th all time in Blue Dragon history. Brown also placed second in the discus with a throw of 170 feet, 0 inches (51.82m), which is the fifth-best mark in Blue Dragon history. Brown added a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw at 161 feet, 1 inches (49.11m).

The Blue Dragons added three more event victories – three individual events and one relay – on Wednesday.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/johnson_chris_pj8c">Chris Johnson</a>, the nation's No. 1 pole vaulter, won the Alex Francis pole vault clearing 16 feet, 4 1/4 inches (5.00m).

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/seamster_ezekiel_gysy">Ezekiel Seamster</a>&nbsp;won his third 100-meter title of the outdoor season with a time of 10.34 seconds, a PR time that is the ninth-fastest mark in Blue Dragon outdoor history.

Seamster rank the anchor leg of Hutchinson's winning 4x100-meter relay on Wednesday.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/warren_d-antonio_xcf2">D'Antonio Warren</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/smith_omari_gc69">Omari Smith</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2023-24/bios/bronaugh_trenton_omnd">Trenton Bronaugh</a>&nbsp;teamed up with Seamster to win the relay with a time of 41.12 seconds.

The Blue Dragons will now compete at the Region 6 Outdoor Championships next Thursday through Saturday at Pratt Community College.

HAYS – Hutchinson Community College sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2023-24/bios/limon_liberty_pn63">Liberty Limon</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2023-24/bios/burke_hayleigh_qa6g">Hayleigh Burke</a>&nbsp;both punched tickets to the 2024 NJCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships, qualifying on Wednesday at the FHSU Alex Francis Classic at Fort Hays State University.

Limon and Burke became the 12th and 13th national qualifiers for the Blue Dragons heading into next week's Region 6 Championships in Pratt.

Limon, after several weeks of being right on the cusp of qualifying, cleared 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches (1.63) meters to finally reach the 2024 qualifying standard in a second-place showing on Wednesday. Limon's PR performance tied for 10th on the Blue Dragon all-time outdoor women's high jump chart.

Burke placed 12th in the hammer throw, but did so with a qualifying throw of 143 feet, 10 inches (43.84 meters), which is 11th all time in Blue Dragon women's track and field history.

The Blue Dragons had four event winners on Wednesday at the Alex Francis Classic, a meet moved up one day because of potential severe weather on Thursday.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2023-24/bios/hawkins_brooke_1fkd">Brooke Hawkins</a>&nbsp;was a double-event winner for Hutchinson. Hawkins won the high jump at 5-4 1/4 (1.63 meters), which was Limon's highest clearance. But Hawkins won the event based on less misses than Limon. Hawkins also won the triple jump with a best jump of 39-1 (11.91m). Hawkins was seventh in the long jump at 16-6 3/4 (5.05m).

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2023-24/bios/kuepker_jenna_arvk">Jenna Kuepker</a>&nbsp;continued her strong season in the javelin with a winning throw of 145-5 (44.33m). Kuepker earlier this season broke the Blue Dragon outdoor javelin record.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2023-24/bios/james_kaylee_rvey">Kaylee James</a>&nbsp;won her fourth 100-meter hurdle title of the 2024 outdoor season. James won the event at 14.12 seconds. James added a third-place finish in the 400 meters with a PR time of 58.07 seconds, the third-fastest outdoor 400-meter time in Blue Dragon history.

Both Blue Dragons cleared 10-2.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — StartUp Hutch announces the addition of three new members to their board of directors: Shelly Bartel, Melissa Moodie, and Amy Brennan.&nbsp;

Shelly Bartel is a 5th generation business owner, managing three small businesses, including Bartel Kitchen and Bath, a 50-year-old family business. Bartel also serves as an independent stylist with Colorstreet and runs JBG, a rental company. Through StartUp Hutch's resources and classes, Bartel has learned to leverage both victories and challenges for the success of her ventures.&nbsp;

Melissa Moodie resides in Hutchinson with her family and is a practicing attorney with the Hinkle Law Firm. She is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and believes they are key drivers for economic growth and stability within the community. Moodie is motivated by new ideas and looks forward to aiding StartUp Hutch in providing valuable resources and programming for entrepreneurs.&nbsp;

Amy Brennan brings 27 years of experience in the financial services industry, with 25 years as a commercial lender assisting clients in Hutchinson and South-Central Kansas. Brennan collaborates closely with businesses to identify their needs and chart paths to success. She also serves as board president for Rise Up Reno Prevention Network.&nbsp;

This year’s combine features Mitchell Tinsley, an American football wide receiver for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League. Tinsley's football career began at Hutchinson Community College! Boys &amp; Girls Club is excited to bring Mitchell back to where it all began, Gowans Stadium.

Join us this Saturday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 at Gowans Stadium. Coach Drew Dallas, Mitchell Tinsley and current Hutchinson Community College football team members will host a mock combine for area youth to have fun and compete in various drills.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to watch from the stands. Drop off and pickup will be on the west side of Gowans by the Cosmosphere.

🏈 Hutch kids combine is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College football team will host its spring scrimmage this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.

The scrimmage is free and open to the public.

The scrimmage was originally scheduled for Thursday evening, but due to the possibility of severe storms, the event has been moved up a day.

The reigning Jayhawk Conference champion Blue Dragons began spring practice on April 1 and will conclude with the scrimmage.

geared towards high school students and young adults ages 14 and up.

HutchCC to host Summer Boot Camps

NEWTON – The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team made team history on Tuesday by winning a fifth-straight Jayhawk Conference team championship.

The No. 5-ranked Blue Dragons finished second in Tuesday’s weather-shortened Jayhawk Championship, the third of three league-designated tournaments. The season team and individual champions are decided by points accumulated by performances in those three tournaments.

With two first-place team titles and a second-place showing this week, the Blue Dragons accumulated 26.5 team points for the 2024 season championship, edging Dodge City, which scored 26 points after two second-place showing and Tuesday’s team title.

The Blue Dragons had two streaks of four-straight league titles – the current streak from 2019-2023 (the 2020 season was canceled because Coronavirus pandemic) and 2008 to 2011. The 2024 team added to the current streak to break that tie.

Hutchinson has now accumulated 12 KJCCC team championships, all under head coach Chris Young.

Four Blue Dragon players earned all-conference honors in 2024.

Freshmen Charlie Box and David Razinskas earned first-team honors. Box was second in the individual standings with 26.5 points after finishes of second, first and a tie for fifth in the league tournaments. Razinskas was fifth in the standings with 18.25 points, accumulating places of third, third and a tie for eighth.

Redshirt freshman Louis Ross earned second-team honors with a 10th-place season performance. Ross finished with 7.75 points. Marco Anderson was an honorable mention player after finishing 12th in the league standings with 4 points.

Playing in much friendlier weather conditions than Monday’s gusty 40 mph wins; the Blue Dragons posted a 3-under 285 on Tuesday. The Dragons entered the final round trailing Dodge City by five strokes after Monday’s weather-inflated 319.

Dodge City went low in Tuesday’s improved conditions, posting a 12-under 276 in the final 18 points to defeat the Blue Dragons 588-602. Garden City was third at 616 (322-294). The Blue Dragons counted scores of 70 from Box, 71 from Razinskas and Anderson and 73 from Ross.

The Blue Dragons had two players finish in the tournament’s Top 10.

Box tied for sixth in the Jayhawk Championship at 150 (80-70). Razinskas tied for eighth at 151 (80-71).

Ross placed 13th at 153 (80-73). Anderson and Keaton Thissen tied for 14th at 154. Anderson had rounds of 83 and 71, while Thissen had a pair of 77s.

Blue Dragon individual Brooks Sauder placed 37th overall with a 166, carding rounds of 90 and 76.

Dodge City’s Arthit Kruaprayong rallied to win the tournament title and take KJCCC Player of the Year honors. After a Monday round of 80, Kruaprayong blistered Sand Creek Station with a 64 on Tuesday to win the tournament by one stroke at 144.

The Blue Dragons will now travel to the Plains District/Region VI Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Missouri.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson announced Monday the appointment of Carissa Paxton as the new Housing Coordinator, effective April 22, 2024.

Paxton, a long-time resident of Hutchinson, brings extensive experience and a strong commitment to community development to her new role. With a background in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from Hutchinson Community College, and ongoing studies in Human Resources Management, Carissa is well-prepared to lead Hutchinson's housing initiatives.

Mary Grace Clements, Interim City Manager, expressed her enthusiasm for Carissa's appointment, stating, "We are excited to welcome Carissa Paxton as our new Housing Coordinator. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, Zion Burgess won the Kansas Youth of the Year title in March.

Burgess is a senior at Hutchinson High School. In mid-June he will travel to Dallas to compete for the regional title. Mr. Burgess will deliver his speech to the Board of Education at their meeting Monday night.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Each state-level Youth of the Year, including military, earns a $2,500 college scholarship. Each regional Youth of the Year, including regional military finalists, receives a $20,000 college scholarship. The National Youth of the Year receives a $50,000 scholarship.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members.

Kansas Youth of the Year Burgess to speak to USD 308 BOE

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former Hutchinson High School Salthawk and current Barton Community College Cougar Myles Thompson has been selected as a participant in the 2024 NJCAA Men's Basketball All-Star Game.

The game will be played on Saturday, May 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Orleans Arena at 4 p.m. MDT.

Mozae Downing-Rivers of Barton will join Thompson as the two lone representatives from the Jayhawk Conference.

The 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore from the Salt City averaged 14 points and seven rebounds in 37 appearances and 37 starts.&nbsp;

Thompson had a breakout national tournament appearance in the Sports Arena, averaging 20.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. He scored 20 or more points in three of the four games in the tournament, helping guide the Cougars to their first-ever national title.

He was selected as a first team all-conference selection, as well as on the all-tournament teams for the Region VI Tournament and the NJCAA National Tournament.

Participants are selected by the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association. There are 27 players on the roster for the game.

This year’s event had 13 Division I players, nine Division II players, five Division III players fill up the two rosters. Players will be selected by the coaches and separated into teams at a later date.&nbsp;

The coaches of this year’s teams will be all three NJCAA national championship coaches –&nbsp;Jeremy Coombs&nbsp;of Barton,&nbsp;Dillon Hargrove&nbsp;of National Park and&nbsp;Josh Mills&nbsp;of Dallas-North Lake.

This is the 14th&nbsp;NJCAA Men’s Basketball All-Star Game dating back to 2009.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 MBB: Former Salthawk Thompson selected for national all-star game

Terry D. Bryan, 53, of Wichita, died April 16, 2024 at his residence. He was born May 26, 1970, to Jerry Bryan and Nora (Ditto) Bryan.

Terry graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1988 and attended Independence Community College. He was a self-employed entrepreneur and investor. Terry love to golf and fish trout in Colorado and he kept himself busy with his work.

Terry is survived by: his sons, Matthew (Audrey) Bryan and Brandon (Brooke) Bryan of Hutchinson; fiancée, Sara Pennington of Wichita; grandchildren, Cannon and Letty Bryan of Hutchinson; and brother Michael Bryan.

Friends may sign the book Friday 9:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m. with the family present 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor Andy Addis officiating. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College’s Board of Trustees chair Terry Bisbee announced today the Board has selected Dr. Tricia Paramore as the college’s next president, pending approval of a contract at a special meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 1.

Paramore, the vice president of academic affairs at HutchCC since February 2023 and a 28-year veteran of the institution, would become president of the college July 1.

Bisbee said the board of trustees discussed the presidential choice for over an hour in executive session at a meeting held Monday night.

From a beginning pool of 46 applicants, five semifinalists emerged and were interviewed by the search committee. The field narrowed to three finalists, each participating in a daylong interview on campus.

Hundreds of people heard the three finalists and were asked to fill out evaluation forms. The forms were then distributed to all board members for their review and to assist them in the decision-making process.

“I appreciate the work of the search committee and the Board of Trustees,” said Bisbee. “Based on the feedback we received, we’re very confident in our selection and look forward to getting an agreement finalized with Dr. Paramore.”

Paramore named HutchCC President

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Soroptimists Women's Show and the Family Health Fair are together in the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Saturday.

"This is our 21st year hosting the Women's Fair in Hutchinson," said Jane Holzrichter with the&nbsp;Soroptimists. "We are really excited to go in one building this year and share the wealth."

The event is free to attend for the first time, but fundraising from booth sales at the fair helps the Soroptimists with scholarships for women.

"We are looking at approximately 160 booths,"&nbsp;Holzrichter said. "We offer scholarships each year for women that are going into college and they need to just have a little assistance. We do not put a disclaimer on how they can spend the money, as long as they are going after higher education."

The Family Health Fair, sponored by PrairieStar Health Center for the 15th year, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the women's show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We're bringing back the carotids," Holzrichter said. "That was something that was missed over the last couple of years. The hospital is bringing back some of those screenings that have been so popular. Glucose screenings and carotid doppler and things like that."

Women's Show and Health Fair free Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College men's basketball sophomore guard Kamryn Thomas signed his letter of intent to further his academic and athletic career at the University of Nebraska Omaha on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Thomas played one season at HutchCC and earned <a href="https://www.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2023-24/div1/all-americans/index">Third Team All-American honors</a> by the NJCAA. The 6-foot-8 guard from Chicago, Illinois played in 33 games, starting 31 of those. He averaged 16.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and shot 43.1 percent from behind the arc. Thomas finished fifth in single-season 3-point field goal makes in program history with 78.

Nebraska Omaha is a NCAA Division I school in Omaha and is a member of the Summit League. The Mavericks finished 15-18 this past season and are coached by Chris Crutchfield, who just completed his second season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Wesley Towers recognized its occupational therapists this week in honor of Occupational Therapy Month.

Megan has been an occupational therapist for 26 years. She has worked in hospitals, long-term care, inpatient/outpatient rehab, and home health services. She truly enjoys helping people gain their independence and get back to their lives and homes after a surgery or health issue. She has been married to her husband Jim for 30 years and has 1 son and 3 daughters.

Alta has lived in Hutchinson for 23 years. She has been involved in healthcare since 2007. She graduated from Brown Mackie College in Salina and has worked as a certified occupational therapist assistant for 10 years, mostly in skilled nursing settings. She enjoys helping residents and patients return to their daily lives and activities.

Sammy has been a licensed occupational therapist for 11 years. Four of those were spent in his home country of India. 

He has experience in multi-cultural health companies and has been flexible in learning new healing methods. He received his doctorate in occupational therapy in 2023. He currently resides in McPherson and enjoys walks alongside rivers and trails with his 6-year-old “fur baby”, a golden retriever named Millie.

Wesley Towers recognizes occupational therapists

Howard John Schmidt, age 83, died peacefully April 13, 2024 in Newton, KS, his hometown since the age of 6. He was born January 13th, 1941 to John F. and Selma Schmidt in Hutchinson, KS.

Growing up, he had many interesting experiences moving with his sisters and parents to various towns in Ohio, Colorado, and Kansas where his father was called to pastor a church, and later to be curator of the Kauffman Museum and Historical Library in North Newton. As a young child, Howard learned to have fun along with the virtue of hard work-delivering eggs to neighbors, raising rabbits, delivering papers, hanging out with campus kids with their maps and hideouts, working on a farm, and building model airplanes. He enjoyed baseball in elementary school, but in high school and college his passion was football, playing on both the Newton High School and the Bethel College football teams. In Newton High School he lettered in both football and track and was involved in student government (officer), Latin Club and academics (Scholarship pins). High school yearbook comments by classmates most often referred to his leadership, academic and athletic skills and personality. Involvement in student government continued in college.

Two summers during college he worked on harvest crews in Montana. He had many good memories of Bethel, playing football, student council participation, convocation, classes, and working on the Bethel grounds. He majored in Natural Sciences, graduating in 1963.

His first year of teaching High School Math and Physics was in Henderson, Nebraska. It was said he burned up the road to Bethel every weekend to see his fiancée, Marilyn Foth. He returned to Newton, teaching 6 years at Newton High School. He earned a Masters in Education degree from Emporia State University. After working summers in the yard at Prestressed Concrete, Inc., he took a full-time position with Prestressed, building bridges and buildings. After 41 fulfilling years, he retired in 2010 as Vice President of Production.

Being an avid supporter of Bethel and enjoying football, led to Howard promoting athletics at Bethel as Booster Club President. He oversaw the developing of benches to lockers in Goering Hall and lockers and weight rooms for various sports. One of his proudest accomplishments was seeing the Bethel College stadium complex develop during his tenure at Prestressed Concrete, so he could oversee the construction and erection of the stadium seating risers.

On June 5, 1965, Howard married his college sweetheart, Marilyn Foth from Cordell, Oklahoma. They enjoyed years of skiing in Colorado with friends, traveling in Europe with a group of teachers, a trip to China with Jim and Shirley Goering and the Holy Land trip with Patty Shelly, as well as traveling in the US and Mexico. The Kasper Broadway trips to New York were a highlight for over 30 years. A major car accident in 1992 did not keep them from continuing to travel. They always enjoyed many family Thanksgiving visits to Beaver Lake in Arkansas and trips to Ponca City and Tulsa, OK to spend holidays with family. A couple's book club with WSU professors and Wichita teachers offered them a challenge and opportunity to expand their friendships. Attending Bethel games and events, plays, movies, playing games with friends, eating out and delivering books to Kidron Bethel from Newton Public Library kept them active. Howard always commented how much he enjoyed going out with friends.

Howard's involvement with Lion's Club projects gave him satisfaction. He was a capable man who loved working outdoors, especially on the lawn.

His childhood interest in models expanded in adulthood to cars and radio control cars, airplanes, and boats. He was featured in the Prestressed Concrete newsletter once for hitting the ground as a model plane reversed course and dive bombed him.

Accomplishments aside, Howard was a quiet, intelligent person who cared about people and didn't make a show of it. His kindness and gentleness were defining characteristics observed by others as well as his hearty laugh and great sense of humor. Young children gave him much joy. His witty remarks were a joy. His resilience and toughness in response to physical setbacks were admirable.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Selma Schmidt and his sister Angela Boho. Survivors include his wife Marilyn Schmidt; sisters: Dee Schmidt of Wichita, KS, Lynette June and husband Howard House of Vineland, Ontario, Canada: sister and brother-in-law: Lois and Robert Corbin of Ponca City, OK, brother-in-law Robert Boho; nephews: Brett House of New York City and Toronto, Canada; niece Krista Lynn House and husband Ern Bieman (children Ollie and Ben Bieman) of Ottawa, Ontario Canada; Jason and wife Carey Corbin (sons Caleb and Parker) of Tulsa, Ryan and wife Laura Corbin (children Christian and Caroline) of Tulsa.

WICHITA – Trailing by six strokes entering Tuesday’s final round of Jayhawk No. 2, the fifth-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team rallied to earn its second KJCCC league win of the season at Crestview Country Club’s North Course.

With four scores of 73 or lower, the Blue Dragons surged past Dodge City and defeated the Conquistadors by eight strokes after shooting a 54-hole total of 2-over 866.

The Blue Dragons now lead Dodge City by two points in the Jayhawk Conference season standings (18-16) with the Jayhawk Conference championship next Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Freshman Charlie Box was the tournament’s individual champion on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 72 to close out a two-stroke victory with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210. Box takes over first place in the KJCCC individual season standings with 19 points.

The Blue Dragons had four golfers finish in the Top 10 Tuesday in high wind conditions.

The Blue Dragons shot a 290 in the final round on Tuesday with 72s from Box and Keaton Thissen and 73s from David Razinskas and Marco Anderson.

Dodge City, after shooting 6-under in the first two rounds, carded a 16-over 304 on Tuesday to finish at 874. Garden City was third at 904.

Box was one only two golfers in the field to shoot even par or lower in each of the three rounds. He had back-to-back rounds of 69 on Monday to lead the event at 6-under par and took a two-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round. Box and Dodge City’s Arthit Kruaprayong both had 72s on Tuesday as Box earned his first individual collegiate victory.

Razinskas placed third individually for the second-straight conference-designated tournament at 1-under 215. Razinskas had rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday. Razinskas is second in the league season standings with 16 points.

Louis Ross finished seventh overall at 6-over 222. Ross had Monday rounds of 72 and 74 and closed Tuesday with a 76.

Anderson tied for eighth at 7-over 223. Anderson started slow on Monday with an opening-round 78, but shot even-par 72 in the second round.

Thissen’s 72 in the final round was a season-low round for the Blue Dragon freshman. He finished tied for 14th on Tuesday with rounds of79, 75 and 72.

Blue Dragon individual player Brooks Sauder tied for 25th&nbsp; at 232 after rounds of 77, 77 and 78.

 </figure>Courtesy HutchCC Sports InformationWICHITA – Trailing by six strokes entering Tuesday’s final round of Jayhawk No. 2, the fifth-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team rallied to earn its second KJCCC league win of the season at Crestview Country Club’s North Course.With four scores of 73 or lower, the Blue Dragons surged past Dodge City and defeated the Conquistadors by eight strokes after shooting a 54-hole total of 2-over 866.The Blue Dragons now lead Dodge City by two points in the Jayhawk Conference season standings (18-16) with the Jayhawk Conference championship next Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton.Freshman Charlie Box was the tournament’s individual champion on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 72 to close out a two-stroke victory with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210. Box takes over first place in the KJCCC individual season standings with 19 points.The Blue Dragons had four golfers finish in the Top 10 Tuesday in high wind conditions.The Blue Dragons shot a 290 in the final round on Tuesday with 72s from Box and Keaton Thissen and 73s from David Razinskas and Marco Anderson.Dodge City, after shooting 6-under in the first two rounds, carded a 16-over 304 on Tuesday to finish at 874. Garden City was third at 904.Box was one only two golfers in the field to shoot even par or lower in each of the three rounds. He had back-to-back rounds of 69 on Monday to lead the event at 6-under par and took a two-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round. Box and Dodge City’s Arthit Kruaprayong both had 72s on Tuesday as Box earned his first individual collegiate victory.Razinskas placed third individually for the second-straight conference-designated tournament at 1-under 215. Razinskas had rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday. Razinskas is second in the league season standings with 16 points.Louis Ross finished seventh overall at 6-over 222. Ross had Monday rounds of 72 and 74 and closed Tuesday with a 76.Anderson tied for eighth at 7-over 223. Anderson started slow on Monday with an opening-round 78, but shot even-par 72 in the second round.Thissen’s 72 in the final round was a season-low round for the Blue Dragon freshman. He finished tied for 14th on Tuesday with rounds of79, 75 and 72.Blue Dragon individual player Brooks Sauder tied for 25th&nbsp; at 232 after rounds of 77, 77 and 78.

Roger Proffitt, 69, of Haven, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024, surrounded by his family at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born October 4, 1954, in Wichita, to Ralph and Rocena (Barb) Proffitt.

Roger graduated from Lennox High School in Inglewood, CA, and attended San Jose State University. He moved to Kansas in 1981, worked in retail sales, and retired as a night manager from Walmart.

Roger had a passion for sports that developed at an early age. He excelled playing football as a quarterback in high school, college as a Spartan, and during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. Everyone wanted to watch him throw the football, but no one wanted to catch it. Roger’s love for the game continued throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed music, gardening, and spending time with his family and loved ones.

Roger is survived by: his close friend, Cheryl Proffitt; nephews, Jeremy (Nicole) Moorman of Granville, IL, and Joshua (Lisa) Proffitt of Haven; nieces, Stephanie (Joel) Turner and ReAnna (Ben) Wolf, both of Wichita; great-nephews/nieces, Jared (Blair) Moorman, Kaegan Moorman, Victoria Moorman, Cole Proffitt, Connor Proffitt, Ethan Wolf, and Mattelyn Turner.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Greg Proffitt; and great-nephew, Dane Moorman.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. Cremation has taken place.

The service will be livestreamed and the link to view it will be active at 1:40 p.m. the day of the service.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The postseason accolades continue to come for the HutchCC women's basketball national championship team, as Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast proclaimed Tuesday, April 16 as "Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon Women's Basketball Team Day."

Members of the Blue Dragon team, as well as the coaching staff were present to be recognized by the Hutchinson City Council.

HutchCC head coach John Ontjes was awarded the "key to the city" by Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements during the presentation, as well.

The Blue Dragons finished the 2023-24 season with a 37-0 record and defeated NW Florida State in the national championship game on Monday, April 1.
