The Hutchinson Police Department has released the results of its recent participation in the statewide “You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.” enforcement campaign.

Over the course of 2.5 weeks, officers conducted overtime saturation patrols aimed at curbing impaired driving. According to HPD, the extra patrols resulted in 34 citations, 18 warnings, three warrants cleared, and contact with 51 individuals. Officers also made one DUI arrest during the campaign.

Police emphasized that impaired driving remains a personal choice — one that can carry serious consequences. “Impaired driving is a choice that YOU make. Make the right choice,” the department said in its release.

HPD also reminded motorists to always buckle up. “Your seat belt is your best defense against impaired drivers,” the release noted. “Every trip, every time.”

The campaign was part of a larger statewide effort to reduce impaired driving crashes and fatalities by increasing visibility and enforcement on Kansas roadways.

Nathaniel “Tater” Hulett was born in Beeville, Texas on March 27th, 1981, to (Father) Richard Dean Hulett and (Mother) Brenda Sue Lawrence (Caselton). He passed away peacefully at his home in Hutchinson, Kansas on August 29th, 2025.

Nathaniel lived his life simply and jokingly said “retired.” Though he struggled daily with mental health challenges, he spent his final years surrounded by hope, family, and the simple joy of living. He will be remembered for his love of music, fishing, his creativity, generosity, and above all, for his devotion to God. Nathaniel carried the Word of God with him wherever he went, eager to share it with anyone who would listen. He collected Bibles gave some away, clothed the needy, fed the hungry, and provided rest to weary souls.

Many will remember him for his big heart, his laughter, and the way he reached out to those in need. He was always the first to encourage someone, to offer kindness, or share a joke to lighten the pain. Nathaniel’s life was a daily battle, but he fought with courage and faith. In God’s mercy, when his struggle was over, Nathaniel was lovingly brought home.

He is survived by his mother, Brenda Sue Caselton; his sister, Heather Helene Hulett; his daughter, Gracie Sue Hulett, his life partner and soulmate Laura “Winky” Weidenbener, his brother Levi Hulett, stepmother Sally Hulett, and his beloved cat, Sadie Rocks. Niece and nephew; Alexzandrea D. Moore and Noah S Howerter. His paternal grandmother Jody Butler; Uncle and Aunt Curtis Peggy VonFeldt, Jacque Waters, Raquel Allan, and Great Uncle Rod Hulett, Great Uncle and Aunt Michael D and Cindy Withrow.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Dean Hulett; his stepfather, Charles D. Caselton; his maternal grandparents Roy and Deborah D Withrow/McIntire; his paternal grandfather Edward Hulett and his cat of 21 years, Large.

A celebration of Nathaniel’s life will be a come-as-you-are family gathering on September 20th, 2025, from 11:30 – 1:30 where family, friends and loved ones are invited to share memories, stories, and love. A memorial guestbook will be available to leave words of comfort and remembrance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nathaniel Hulett Trust.

Above all, Nathaniel’s family finds peace knowing that he is now in the presence of Jesus, healed, and eternally home.

The Cottonwood Building at the Kansas State Fair has been evacuated due to a gas leak.  KSFM staff responded to a report of a smell of gas in the building and detected a dangerous buildup of gas in the building, which contains a food court, on their gas monitor. 

 The Hutchinson Fire Department is at the scene and pushing fresh air into the building to dissipate the gas.  Once they determine it is safe to enter the building, they will find the source of the gas and control it so that the building can re-open.

ANDOVER, Kan. — Hutchinson High School opened its 2025 football season in dominant fashion Friday night, shutting out defending Class 4A champion Andover Central 34-0 on the road.

Both teams traded turnovers and failed fourth-down conversions in the first half before the Salthawks struck first. Quarterback Robert Hunter connected with Larry Jeramiah on a 41-yard touchdown pass with 8:55 left in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead, which held until halftime.

Hutchinson’s defense controlled the second half, forcing multiple three-and-outs and keeping the Jaguars’ offense bottled up. The Salthawks extended their lead in the third quarter when Karmelo Green scored on a 20-yard option run. The extra point failed, but Hutchinson led 13-0.

Later in the period, fullback Jeramyah Gatho-Karanu caught a pass in the left flat and rumbled 39 yards for another score. A successful two-point conversion pushed the lead to 21-0.

Hunter added another touchdown early in the fourth, scrambling before finding Lamar Govain wide open in the end zone to make it 27-0. Hunter completed his return to the Salthawks for his senior season with three touchdown passes on the night.

The defense sealed the win when Jackson Anderson returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown, capping the shutout at 34-0.

Day two of the Kansas State Fair promises something for everyone, blending the best of agriculture, arts, food, and entertainment into a full day of activity.

The day begins bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Plein Air Art Competition along Lake Talbott East, where artists capture the fairgrounds in fresh morning light. At 8 a.m., agriculture takes center stage with the 4-H and FFA beef, goat, lamb, and swine market shows, plus working equitation demonstrations. Barn tours kick off at Moo-U, offering families a hands-on learning experience.

Visitors can also stop by the Oz Gallery for demonstrations from Kansas woodcarvers and view the professional art exhibits set up around Lake Talbott.

By 10 a.m., families can catch Dr. Goddard’s Lab in the Education Center, cheer on Hedrick’s Pig Races, or head to the Expo Center for the majestic Draft Horse Show. Food competitions get underway with the King Arthur Donut Contest and the Youth Favorite Cookie Contest Judging.

At noon, the Hutchinson Zoo takes over the Education Center, while crowds gather for the Pies, Pies, and More Pies Contest in the Domestic Arts Building. Families can also enjoy Glenda &amp; Mike’s Magic and Ventriloquism Show lakeside.

Day two at the Kansas State Fair: From livestock to laughter

Everfull is pleased to announce the launch of new Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels for the community of Hutchinson.  

Effective September 8, 2025, Everfull will begin to offer a paid version of the Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs it formerly provided. This new service is independent of congregate and home-delivered services provided by the South Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging and Hutchinson Meals on Wheels housed at The Wesley. Neither of Everfull’s Friendship Meals nor Meals on Wheels Hutchinson programs will be reliant on local, state, and/or federal funds. 

Everfull formerly provided Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels in Hutchinson funded by county, state, and federal programs under the Older Americans Act Title III C1 and C2. Since services provided by Everfull ended on June 27, 2025, Everfull has been approached by community members, former staff, and participants to restart services. 

In response, on September 2, 2025, Everfull put forth a proposal to the City of Hutchinson for consideration to provide emergency funds to allow for a smooth transition from a state and federal funding model to a self-pay model. In that proposal, Everfull requested up to $40,000 to support the program during the initial months of establishing a self-pay model, allowing a per-meal fee of $7.50 to immediately restore services to their prior level. The City of Hutchinson City Council ultimately tabled the consideration of the proposal. 

After hearing of Everfull's presentation at the city council on September 2, 2025, donors have stepped forward and agreed to fill the funding gap to allow resumption of services. The donors have provided a guarantee of up to $40,000 to support Everfull during the start-up of this new program. 

On September 8, 2025, Everfull will relaunch its Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs. Services will initially be based out of Everfull’s Hutchinson location at 401 E 4th Avenue, Suite D in Hutchinson, Kansas 67501. 

Members of the community, regardless of age, who need a location to meet for nutritious meals and powerful connections may contact Everfull to join our Friendship Meals program. Members of the community who need healthy meals but are unable to leave their homes may join the Meals on Wheels program. Both services are available for $7.50. Unlike the former program, which was restricted to those 60 years of age and older, the only requirement for participation in the program is the advance payment of the $7.50 fee.

The donors are residents of the community who know the emergent nature of the problem and understand why Everfull's solution provides the logical next steps to support seniors who are in crisis due to the current situation.

Charles Johnston, Executive Director of Everfull, added, "Since the discontinuation of our services, we have heard daily from members of our community whose basic needs are not met. This generous commitment to support Everfull as we launch a paid model of the Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels program is a testament to the hard work Everfull is doing every day in our communities. We are excited to return our services to Hutchinson to not only meet this urgent need but to expand our services to those in Hutchinson who desperately need these services but were previously not eligible.

Since services provided by Everfull ended on June 27, 2025, Everfull has been approached by community members, former staff, and participants to restart services. In response, on September 2, 2025, Everfull put forth a proposal to the City of Hutchinson for consideration to provide emergency funds to allow for a smooth transition from a state and federal funding model to a self-pay model. In that proposal, Everfull requested up to $40,000 to support the program during the initial months of establishing a self-pay model, allowing a per-meal fee of $7.50 to immediately restore services to their prior level. The City of Hutchinson City Council ultimately tabled the consideration of the proposal. After hearing of Everfull's presentation at the city council on September 2, 2025, donors have stepped forward and agreed to fill the funding gap to allow resumption of services. The donors have provided a guarantee of up to $40,000 to support Everfull during the start-up of this new program. The Program On September 8, 2025, Everfull will relaunch its Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs. Services will initially be based out of Everfull’s Hutchinson location at 401 E 4th Avenue, Suite D in Hutchinson, Kansas 67501. Members of the community, regardless of age, who need a location to meet for nutritious meals and powerful connections may contact Everfull to join our Friendship Meals program. Members of the community who need healthy meals but are unable to leave their homes may join the Meals on Wheels program. Both services are available for $7.50. Unlike the former program, which was restricted to those 60 years of age and older, the only requirement for participation in the program is the advance payment of the $7.50 fee. Lucy Heller, President of the Board of Directors of Everfull, made the following statement: "Everfull is grateful to our donors who wish to remain anonymous for their support of our program. The donors are residents of the community who know the emergent nature of the problem and understand why Everfull's solution provides the logical next steps to support seniors who are in crisis due to the current situation. This generous commitment to support Everfull as we launch a paid model of the Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels program is a testament to the hard work Everfull is doing every day in our communities. We are excited to return our services to Hutchinson to not only meet this urgent need but to expand our services to those in Hutchinson who desperately need these services but were previously not eligible. Rae Patricia (Heath) Hederstedt, 83, died on September 1, 2025. She was born on August 21, 1942, in Salina, Kansas, to Roy Hinkle Heath and Rachel Esther (Tonkin) Heath.

Rae Pat graduated from Salina High School in 1960. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and master’s degree in education from Wichita State University. She married David Ross Hederstedt in 1963. They were married many years and were later good friends and co-parents. Rae Pat taught elementary school in Eudora, Overbrook, and Osage City, Kansas. In Hutchinson, she first taught Head Start, and later, taught third, fourth, and fifth grades at Avenue A Elementary School, retiring in 2003. She was a member of the KU Alumni Association, Pi Beta Phi, and Grace Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry and had many friends. She was a fierce and loving advocate for Sam - her son with disabilities.

Rae Pat was a caregiver and lover of learning. She prioritized building strong friendships and remembered that all the best relationships are sprinkled with quick, intelligent wit. Sharing these qualities and values made her an amazing mom and grandma.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Roy Samuel Heath, her sister, Alison Mary (Heath) Carter, and Dave Hederstedt.

Rae Pat is survived by her daughters, Sarah (Chuck) Blake and Laura A. Hederstedt; son, Sam Wilson Hederstedt; five grandchildren, T.J. (Tucker) Blake-Briggs, Rachel Kephart, Annie Blake, Charlie Kephart, and Joe Blake; brother-in-law, George Carter; niece Elizabeth Carter, and many wonderful cousins and dear friends.

Ana Isabel Vonachen Dominguez, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep August 28, 2025 in Lawrence, Kansas. Born January 13, 1936, Ana lived in the Hutchinson, Kansas area most of her life, working as a translator at Heston Corporation, and in retail sales at Pegues, Wiley’s and Dillard’s department stores. She also taught Spanish at Trinity Junior/High School.

She graduated from high school at the Instituto de Media de Melilla (Spain) in 1954 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Liberal Arts from the Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain) in 1960. She met her future husband Cecil Rex Vonachen in 1957 while he was stationed at the United States Air Force Base in Zaragoza, Spain. They were married there on December 26, 1960, and moved to Pratt, Kansas in 1961. Returning to Spain with her husband and children for one year in 1972, Ana also received her Masters degree in Philosophy and Liberal Arts from the Universidad de Zaragoza.

In her spare time while raising her three children, Ana enjoyed playing tennis, Bridge and Ma Jong with many dear friends, as well as knitting and crocheting. She was a devote Catholic and volunteered for many years in various church activities at St. Teresa’s and Holy Cross Catholic Churches in Hutchinson.

Ana is survived by her children Kathleen Ann VonAchen of Lawrence, Kansas, Steven Eric Vonachen (Stephanie) of Wichita, Kansas, John Terry Vonachen of Lawrence, Kansas, and grandson Samuel Vonachen of Lansing, Kansas. She is also survived by her brother Juan Dominguez Lasierra of Zaragoza, Spain, sister-in-law Arlene Vonachen of Pratt, Kansas, and sister-in-law Connie Vonachen of Racine, Wisconsin.

Preceded in death include her loving spouse of 61 years Cecil Rex Vonachen, her parents Juan Dominguez Dominguez and Victoriana Dominguez Lasierra, father-in-law and mother-in-law Rex and Mrytle Vonachen, brother-in-law Wayne Vonachen, daughter-in-law Karla Vonachen, granddaughter Audrey Vonachen, and many cousins in Spain.

A special mass is being held to celebrate her memory and life at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, Kansas 67502 on Saturday, September 13th at 10:30 am. Her family will be present to welcome friends and loved ones.

The Kansas State Fair is just around the corner, and with thousands of visitors expected to travel into Hutchinson, several temporary traffic changes will soon take effect around the fairgrounds.

Road Closures &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp;State Fair Road (Main to Plum): Closed September 3–15. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • Plum Street: Closed Sept. 3–14. On weekdays (Monday–Thursday), the closure runs from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; on weekends, the road will be fully closed.

Temporary Traffic Lights &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • Signals are at 20th and Main and 23rd and Main&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;•&nbsp; Lights will be active through Sept. 18.&nbsp;

One-Way Traffic &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp;Poplar Street from Crescent Blvd. to 20th will run northbound only through Sept. 15

During the Fair, State Fair Road falls under the Kansas State Fair’s responsibility for traffic and safety management. Officials are reminding visitors and residents to plan ahead, drive cautiously through surrounding neighborhoods, and remain alert for the increased pedestrian traffic the event brings.

The Kansas State Fair opens Friday, September 6, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 15.

The 2025 Kansas State Fair kicks off today with a special celebration honoring seniors during "Young at Heart Day". Guests 55 and older will enjoy discounted $2 gate admission as the Fair officially opens its 10-day run at the Hutchinson fairgrounds.

The day begins early with the Working Equitation Show at 8 a.m. in Expo II, followed by popular family attractions such as Moo-U Guided Barn Tours at the Birthing Center and Dr. Goddard’s Lab demonstrations at the Education Center. Throughout the morning, visitors can also catch Hedrick’s Pig Races, the Chainsaw Woodcarvers, and a variety of art demonstrations in the Oz Gallery.

At 11 a.m., the official Opening Ceremony takes place at the Peoples Bank and Trust Arena, followed by a ribbon-cutting at 11:15 a.m. The afternoon schedule is packed with livestock competitions including goat, swine, sheep, and beef showmanship events, along with the Draft Horse Show in Expo Center. Visitors can also enjoy special contests such as homemade ice cream judging and the “It’s All About the Bread” competition.

Entertainment highlights include the Cowboy Circus, Ron Diamond the Hypnotist, and “It’s Showtime Circus” at Gottschalk Park. Musical performances will feature Sweet Rhubarb on the Lowen Corporation Stage, Jay Jackson with Nashville’s Finest at the Peoples Bank and Trust Arena, and Wyatt Henson performing at Lake Talbott.

The day wraps up with a big night at the Nex-Tech Grandstand, where rising country artists Sam Barber and Avery Anna take the stage.

With events ranging from animal shows and art exhibits to live music and senior-focused fun, Young at Heart Day sets the tone for a Fair filled with Kansas traditions, family activities, and community celebration.

Kansas State Fair opens with ‘Young at Heart Day’

United Way of Reno County is launching its 2025-2026 community-wide campaign today and leading the charge this year are co-chairs Rion and Darcy Rhoades. With a goal of raising $1.35M, the funds donated this season will support over 18,000 Reno County residents through 38 vital programs that touch the lives of locals from birth to end of life. 

“United Way is the heart of our community—it lifts people up in times of need and helps create opportunities for a better life for all,” said co-chair Rion Rhoades, former Hutchinson Community College football coach turned financial coach with Edward Jones. “We’re honored to help lead this effort to invest in the future of Reno County.” 

Rion is joined by his wife and co-chair, Darcy Rhoades, a long-time local childcare provider who has cared for and nurtured generations of Reno County children over the past 25+ years. “This year’s campaign theme, “United is the Way” reflects a belief we hold closely: everyone has something to give,” said Darcy. “Together, we can lift up Reno County—one gift, one program, one life at a time.” 

As campaign launches, CEO Lacey Mills, reminds residents that there are many ways to engage with UWRC and help raise funds towards the campaign goal. “We will be mailing letters to supporters, our volunteers will knocking on the doors of local businesses and we’re hosting events—all of which will help us towards our goal,” she noted.   

The ever-popular Shop.Local/Give.Local event will return to Memorial Hall on Nov. 13—featuring popup boutiques from local vendors and a live fashion show. 

UWRC will also hold a new event this season to raise both funds and awareness of non-profit work happening locally, called Spark Tank Live! That event will be held on Sept. 25 at the 1861 Club on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Surrounded by family and love, we announce the passing of Donald Haynes, who died on August 31, 2025, at the age of 78 in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kansas, after a short illness. Born on November 1, 1946, to Charles and Christine Haynes, Don lived a full and vibrant life.

A graduate of Buhler High School, Don built his life in Hutchinson, where he dedicated 42 years to Cessna/Eaton before retiring. His career was marked by hard work, reliability, and pride in a job well done — qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of everyone who knew him.

Don is survived by: his daughter, Kim Evans (Kurt Schlegel) of Colorado; his son, Mike Haynes (Darnell) of Kansas; and his grandchildren, Amanda Boydstun (Davin) of Colorado, Alan-Michael Evans of Colorado, Ethan Haynes (Diana) of Kansas, Tyler Haynes (Cassie) of Kansas; and Laura King of Kansas, a beloved part of his family. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a wide circle of friends who will miss him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, sister, and two brothers.

Don will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his deep well of knowledge, his kind heart, and his sense of humor. He had a gift for making everyone feel like family. He never met a stranger — he could strike up a conversation with anyone, always ready with a story, a joke, or a laugh. He especially loved being around children, and his face lit up in their presence.

Outside of work, Don’s greatest passion was the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and especially competitive bench rest shooting. As a lifetime member of the Rivercreek Gun Club, he proudly held multiple shooting records and spent countless hours competing and connecting with friends who shared his love for the sport.

Don also had an incredible depth of knowledge when it came to guns and ammunition. Conversations with him often included what he was building, modifying, or dreaming up next. He was always eager to share advice, stories, and, of course, a good laugh.

Don’s parting words, delivered with his signature humor and warmth, were simple: “Don’t sit around thinking about your bucket list — start checking things off!” He reminded us all to stop procrastinating, embrace adventure, and make every single day count.

In accordance with his wishes, memorial donations may be made to the Rivercreek Gun Club, a place that held a special place in his heart. Cremation has taken place.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of East Sherman on the south side.

In June of 1873, Hutchinson citizens voted for bonds of $15,000 to build the first public school house. E.L. Meyers sold the bonds in St. Louis.

Built in the fall of 1873, the first Sherman School opened April 14, 1874, at 227 E. Sherman. The first photo shows that school and children in 1876. It faced Maple Street with all ages studying together.

In 1884, it was expanded to add for a high school. The second photo shows that expansion in 1894, still facing Maple Street.

The third photo shows that same building after another expansion in 1907.

In 1915, the original Sherman building was razed and replaced with a much larger structure, now addressed as 221 E. Sherman. This building cost $70,000 to construct. The fourth photo shows this Sherman School about 1920 when it became a junior high school and before another annex was added in 1925.

This building was razed in 1981 to be replaced with a third school structure on this site, this time facing Avenue A.

In 1983, the newest Sherman Middle School opened, now addressed as 210 E. Avenue A. The fifth photo shows the current Hutchinson Middle School 7, still at 210 E. Avenue A today.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sherman - Vol. 138

Kpreps.com has released its high school football preseason rankings with several Reno County-area programs and nearby schools earning recognition ahead of the 2025 season.

Buhler, which reached the Class 4A semifinals last fall, begins the year ranked No. 4. The Crusaders return standout running back Ben Clouse, who missed the end of last season due to injury, and a veteran offensive line that helped power last year’s nine-win campaign. Bishop Miege is ranked No. 1 in 4A, followed by Kapaun Mt. Carmel and defending champion Andover Central, with Wamego just behind Buhler at No. 5.

In Eight-Man Division I, Little River opens at No. 5 after finishing 8-3 a year ago. The Redskins return junior playmaker Jaren Garrison, who rushed for 889 yards and 12 touchdowns, and four of their top five tacklers. Wichita County tops the 8M-I poll, with South Central, Central Plains and Ell-Saline also ranked.

Several other local teams are expected to be contenders even if they didn’t crack the preseason top five. McPherson, which returns a strong nucleus under coach Jace Pavlovich, opens the year just outside the Class 5A poll and faces third-ranked Great Bend in its opener. Inman, a state semifinalist in 2023, received votes in Class 1A. Hutchinson, Sterling and Pretty Prairie were also among area programs recognized in preseason discussions.

Elsewhere, Derby holds the top ranking in Class 6A, while two-time defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas is No. 1 in 5A. 🏈 Kpreps releases preseason rankings; Buhler, Little River among top five

Feedback from Reno County residents is needed as the second Love Where You Live Resident Perception Survey kicks off.

The survey is the first phase of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Love Where You Live Community Empowerment Initiative, a three-year effort now entering its second year designed to strengthen Reno County communities by amplifying residents’ voices, encouraging community engagement, and promoting collaborative action. The benchmarking data provided through this process will help inform how residents can make lasting positive change and build stronger community pride. The results will also inform future initiatives and investments of foundation grants and outside resources and to catalyze action.

The foundation continues to contract with Innovation Economy Partners to administer the project. The Ohio-based firm, which also works with McPherson County Community Foundation and Western Kansas Community Foundation on similar initiatives, designed the survey and will collect the data and analyze the results. Data from year one of the initiative can be found online at RenoSurvey.com.

Year one of the initiative sparked signs of progress across the county on residents’ identified priorities, from measures to increase blight removal and tackle housing challenges to civic improvements in rural Reno County. Projects to expand Sylvia’s community garden, improve the Arlington Community Building and launch Haven’s own Love Where You Live Initiative all received Fund for Reno County Impact Cycle 1 grant awards earlier this year.

The Community Foundation hopes to continue that momentum with even more survey participation from all corners of the county, demographics and walks of life.

“We were so pleased with the response to the first year of this effort,” said Director of Strategy Kari Mailloux. “We had 1,022 people who gave their input on the survey, and the turnout at the community workshops that followed was enthusiastic. But this year, we want to reach even more people, especially young adults, renters, communities of color, and rural residents—to get even better data. Broad input makes the priorities and collective perceptions more credible and actionable. Every voice we hear is one more perspective shaping our shared future.”

The collected data will inform this year’s community-level reports that will be available in the winter for Buhler, the Fairfield school area (including Arlington, Turon, Langdon, Partridge, Abbyville, Sylvia and Plevna), the Haven and Yoder area, Hutchinson (including Castleton, The Highlands and Willowbrook), Nickerson, the Pretty Prairie area, South Hutchinson, and Reno County as a whole.

Residents as young as 16 are urged to take the approximately 10-minute survey online at RenoSurvey.com or download a paper copy to complete and return to Hutchinson Community Foundation by Oct. 17, when the survey closes. Those copies should be returned to the foundation office, 1 N. Main St., Ste. 501, Hutchinson, KS 67501. Surveys are available in English and Spanish.

This year as a bonus, for every 50 surveys completed in a Reno County community, Hutch CF will make a $50 donation to the local food pantry.

The second phase of the initiative will begin in early 2026 with community workshops to discuss the survey results, prioritize needs and brainstorm project ideas.

Organizations and groups may then submit grant proposals for Fund for Reno County funding through February 2026.

The process will conclude for a final cycle in 2027.

Residents, clubs, groups, employers and organizations are encouraged to help administer the survey to their constituents. Hutchinson Community Foundation staff are also available for short presentations to standing meetings.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONFeedback from Reno County residents is needed as the second Love Where You Live Resident Perception Survey kicks off.The survey is the first phase of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Love Where You Live Community Empowerment Initiative, a three-year effort now entering its second year designed to strengthen Reno County communities by amplifying residents’ voices, encouraging community engagement, and promoting collaborative action. The benchmarking data provided through this process will help inform how residents can make lasting positive change and build stronger community pride. The results will also inform future initiatives and investments of foundation grants and outside resources and to catalyze action.The foundation continues to contract with Innovation Economy Partners to administer the project. The Ohio-based firm, which also works with McPherson County Community Foundation and Western Kansas Community Foundation on similar initiatives, designed the survey and will collect the data and analyze the results.  </figure>Year one of the initiative sparked signs of progress across the county on residents’ identified priorities, from measures to increase blight removal and tackle housing challenges to civic improvements in rural Reno County. Projects to expand Sylvia’s community garden, improve the Arlington Community Building and launch Haven’s own Love Where You Live Initiative all received Fund for Reno County Impact Cycle 1 grant awards earlier this year.The Community Foundation hopes to continue that momentum with even more survey participation from all corners of the county, demographics and walks of life.“We were so pleased with the response to the first year of this effort,” said Director of Strategy Kari Mailloux. “We had 1,022 people who gave their input on the survey, and the turnout at the community workshops that followed was enthusiastic. But this year, we want to reach even more people, especially young adults, renters, communities of color, and rural residents—to get even better data. Broad input makes the priorities and collective perceptions more credible and actionable. Every voice we hear is one more perspective shaping our shared future.”The collected data will inform this year’s community-level reports that will be available in the winter for Buhler, the Fairfield school area (including Arlington, Turon, Langdon, Partridge, Abbyville, Sylvia and Plevna), the Haven and Yoder area, Hutchinson (including Castleton, The Highlands and Willowbrook), Nickerson, the Pretty Prairie area, South Hutchinson, and Reno County as a whole.Residents as young as 16 are urged to take the approximately 10-minute survey online at RenoSurvey.com or download a paper copy to complete and return to Hutchinson Community Foundation by Oct. 17, when the survey closes. Surveys are available in English and Spanish.This year as a bonus, for every 50 surveys completed in a Reno County community, Hutch CF will make a $50 donation to the local food pantry.The second phase of the initiative will begin in early 2026 with community workshops to discuss the survey results, prioritize needs and brainstorm project ideas.Organizations and groups may then submit grant proposals for Fund for Reno County funding through February 2026.The process will conclude for a final cycle in 2027.Residents, clubs, groups, employers and organizations are encouraged to help administer the survey to their constituents. Reno Co. residents invited to shape year two of Love Where You Live data

The Hutchinson City Council unanimously approved its 2026 budget during the Sept. 2 meeting, adopting a plan that includes a 1.7 mill increase in property taxes.&nbsp;

A handful of attendees voiced frustration with the increased tax rate. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Council members acknowledged those concerns but emphasized the difficulty of balancing competing community priorities.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Homelessness Discussion Dominates Meeting&nbsp;

A good portion of Tuesday evening’s meetings was spent on how to address homelessness in Avenue A Park and the surrounding downtown area. The discussion grew out of a proposal to consider an anti-camping ordinance.&nbsp;

Mayor Stacy Goss pointed out that many activities such an ordinance would restrict are already illegal. Councilman Greg Fast suggested posting a police officer in the park full-time, an idea Police Chief Brice Burlie dismissed as impractical, noting it would require hiring four additional officers.&nbsp;

The conversation broadened into the root causes of homelessness.&nbsp; “The number of homeless people, or aimless people, is a bellwether to your community,” said Shara Gonzales, president and CEO of New Beginnings. She cited rising living costs as a key factor.&nbsp; “The cost of living has gone up, and as that does, more and more people do fall out, with no way to get back in place,” Gonzales said. “Once you don’t have anything, it’s very hard to acquire things.”&nbsp;

No action was taken on the ordinance, as it was a discussion item only.&nbsp;

Rezoning and Demolition Decisions&nbsp;

Council also revisited a rezoning request for the northwest corner of East 23rd Avenue and North Lorraine Street. Developers who had planned to build a car wash there have withdrawn, but property owner Keith Frederick still seeks to change the zoning from high-density residential (R-5) to commercial (C-1). Council voted unanimously to send the matter back to the planning commission for a second time and requested additional feedback from neighboring property owners.&nbsp;

In another unanimous decision, the council overturned the denial of a demolition permit for the Bernard’s Restaurant and Catering building. Owner Susan Gress and her contractor were granted permission to proceed, though they indicated they hope to preserve structurally sound sections of the building.&nbsp;

The nonprofit Everfull, which provides meals to seniors and underserved residents, requested up to $40,000 in city funding after losing a contract with the South Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging. Council members tabled the request after a lengthy discussion.&nbsp;

City council approves 2026 budget

Lori Ann Danner, 50, passed away on August 31, 2025, at her home in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born on February 21, 1975, in Hutchinson, KS to Morris and Patricia (O’Neal) Goss.

In 1993, Lori graduated from Hutchinson High School. She was an assistant manager in the food service industry. On September 17, 2004, Lori married Michael Danner in Hutchinson, KS.

Lori had a lifelong love for music. She and Mike have been to 100’s of music concerts over the years. She was a huge history buff and was continually wanting to learn more. She was a very big advocate for people being themselves and was a very outside of the box girl. She was compassionate towards everyone she met, including animals. Lori will be dearly missed by family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Sherri Goss and Janet Hendry.

Lori is survived by her husband, Mike; and a sister, Amy Corsetti.

Per Lori’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. A visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the funeral chapel. Inurnment will take place at Memorial Park&nbsp; Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hereditary Neurological Disease Centre- Wichita KS and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.&nbsp;
