HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;AJ Mustow drove in three runs and Tyson Vassart launched a two-run homer as the Hutchinson Monarchs rolled past the Newton Rebels 13-2 on Saturday night at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Monarchs (2-0) tallied 13 runs on 11 hits, taking control early and never letting up in their season opener.

Mustow led the offensive charge, going 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs. He opened his night with an RBI triple to center field in the first inning that gave Hutchinson a 2-1 lead. Later, he scored on a wild pitch in a five-run second inning.

Vassart capped that frame with a towering home run to right, plating two and extending the Monarchs’ lead to 5-1.

The scoring started when Bryce Bradford’s sacrifice fly allowed Jay Spafford to tag up and score, tying the game at 1 in the bottom of the first. From there, the Monarchs piled on with disciplined at-bats and timely hitting.

Newton (0-2) managed just two runs and couldn’t recover after falling behind early.

Monarch starting pitcher&nbsp;Carson Harrell (1-0) picked up the win for Hutchinson, pitching 2 1/3 innings while allowing two runs. He struck out three but walked four in the early-season outing. Brayden Rose (0-1) took the loss for Newton giving up 8 runs on 5 Monarch hits.

Next action for the Monarchs is Monday, June 2nd at 7pm vs the Derby Twins at Hobart-Detter Field.

WICHITA, Kan. — Area athletes from across south-central Kansas capped off standout seasons at the KSHSAA State Track &amp; Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium. Multiple local schools earned gold medals, shattered personal bests, and climbed the podium in a meet that featured nearly 3,000 competitors across all classes.

Hesston’s Ashley Lehman continued to dominate as one of the state’s premier sprinters and jumpers in Class 3A. Lehman captured state titles in the 100 meters (11.75), 200 meters (24.56), and 400 meters (55.58), and also added a championship in the pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet, 1 inch. The Hesston girls 4x800 relay also brought home third in 10:00.05.

In Class 2A, Inman’s girls capped a stellar postseason with a state title in the 4x100 relay (50.36) and a silver medal in the 4x400 relay (4:07.63). Brooklyn Black placed third in the 300 hurdles (47.52), and Faith Baxter placed fourth in the wheelchair 100-meter dash.

Sterling’s Julia Kilgore completed a sweep in Class 2A sprints, winning the 400 in 57.12 and placing fourth in the 200 (25.24). Moundridge continued its relay dominance with a 4x400 gold (4:05.61) and silver in the 4x100 (50.72). Cammi Unruh (4th, 12.79) and Avery Schrag (10th, 400) added more top-10s.

Central Christian’s Jessa Losew was runner-up in the Class 1A 400 (59.17) and third in the triple jump (36-10). Teammate Belle Barnett placed ninth in the 100. Little River's Havana Olander earned the 1A triple jump crown at 37-9 1/4.

Buhler medaled in the Class 4A girls 4x100 (3rd, 49.08), with standout performances from Jenna Lackey, who finished fourth in the 200 (26.03) and third in the pole vault (10-0). Isabella Friesen took sixth in the 3200 (11:46.50), and Laney Reiff placed fifth in the 800 (2:23.05).

McPherson’s Lexi Patterson clocked 11:43.48 for fourth in the 4A 3200, while Arihanna Koehn took fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.62) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.29).

Pretty Prairie’s Lauren Detter finished third in the 1A 800 (2:25.24).

McPherson’s Caleb Muehler had a dominant showing in Class 4A distance events, winning the 3200 meters with a state-best 9:24.70 and placing sixth in the 800 (1:59.69) and seventh in the 1600 (4:37.55). Teammate Ethan Elder was also top-10 in both races.

Buhler’s Gavin Lindahl placed second in the 1600 (4:28.60) and third in the 3200 (10:00.79), while Zach Friesen claimed silver in the 110 hurdles (14.89). Buhler's boys 4x100 relay finished fourth (43.32).

In Class 3A, Hesston’s Casey Heinrichs ran 1:58.00 to place third in the 800, and Jamison Kohl earned seventh in the 300 hurdles. The Swathers’ pole vaulters and throwers also earned points.

Halstead’s Breeson Bigley was sixth in the 400 (50.34), and the Dragons 4x400 team earned a top-10 finish.

Little River’s Kal-El Robinson placed fifth in the 1A 100 (11.35), while Jay Smith swept the boys wheelchair 100 (20.07) and 400 (1:37.82). Christopher Norez added a sixth-place javelin finish (165-9).

Inman’s Riley Roots was runner-up in the 2A 3200 (10:09.64), and Tyler Martisko placed eighth in the 800 (2:05.41). The Teutons were sixth in the 4x800 and claimed fifth in javelin behind Malachi Brunk (171-1).

Trinity Catholic took gold in the 2A 4x800 relay (8:24.11), and Isaac Hammersmith placed third in the high jump (6-6) and long jump (22-0.5). Kaid McElgunn took bronze in the 100 (11.16).

&nbsp;A crowd of 2,700 racing fans packed the stands Friday night at SaltCity Racing for an action-packed evening of dirt track competition, highlighted by a thrilling win from Zach Blurton of Quinter, Kansas in the 360 Winged Sprint division.&nbsp;

Blurton outpaced a competitive field to take first place in the feature event, edging out Blake Hawn of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, who claimed second. Rounding out the top three was Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, Texas.&nbsp;

In IMCA Stock Car action, it was Mike Petersillie of Hoisington, Kansas who took the checkered flag, with Hutchinson locals Scott Miller and Tanner Thiel finishing second and third respectively.&nbsp;

In Super Stock action&nbsp; Wichita's J.D. Eveland takes top honors, followed closely by Chris Eveland of Hutchinson. Jerrod Reimer, also of Hutchinson, secured a strong third-place finish.&nbsp;

Friday’s races delivered high-octane entertainment from start to finish, and fans can already look forward to the next round of racing scheduled for Friday, June 20. That night’s lineup will feature IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock, IMCA Northern SportMod, and the return of the United Rebel Late Model Series.&nbsp;

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for prime seating.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs opened the 2025 season with a 4-3 victory over the Newton Rebels on Friday night at Hobart-Detter Field in front of 485 spectators.

Drew Bugner gave the Monarchs an early spark with a solo home run to right field in the first inning. Jackson Legg added an RBI single in the third to make it 2-0.

Newton pulled even in the top of the fourth, scoring on a double by Raisean Dorsey and a groundout by Kasey Lowe. But Hutchinson quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom half on a solo shot into the bullpen in left by Keegan Demmer.

Ethan Giesbrecht picked up the win for Hutchinson, allowing just one hit and two runs (one earned) over five innings while striking out eight and walking one. Mitchell Johnson earned the save, and Russell Copous added a scoreless inning of relief. The Monarchs pitching staff struck out 16 Rebels in the game.

Matt Newman started for Newton and went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five. Brody Farthing took the loss in relief, issuing three walks and giving up one run in one-third of an inning.

Legg led the Monarchs at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Dylan Bell drew two of the team’s eight walks. JJ Spafford stole a pair of bases for Hutchinson.

Dorsey and Tyler Akers each had a hit for the Rebels, while Akers and Lakin Franz combined for four of the team’s seven stolen bases.&nbsp;

SALINA, Kan. — The No. 1 McPherson High School softball team capped a perfect season, defeating No. 2 Eudora, 4-1, in the Class 4A state championship game on Friday evening at Salina South High School.

The Bullpups finish the season 31-0, while the Cardinals end their year with a 27-2 mark.&nbsp;

Addison Chapman pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.

The Bullpups took an early lead with a bases-loaded walk by Pera Bauer in the first inning. They added single runs in the second and third, the latter coming on a Rylie Whitfield RBI single to right, to build a 3-0 advantage.

Chapman also led McPherson at the plate, going 2-for-2 from the leadoff spot. Bauer and Whitfield each drove in a run, and McPherson played error-free defense, with Haely Hagemann recording a team-high seven chances.

Eudora starter Sam Claire struck out 10 while giving up seven hits and four runs across six innings. Claire also drove in the Cardinals’ lone run and had one of their two hits, joined by Reese Pattison. Eudora also played clean defensively, with Pattison leading the team with 11 chances.

PRATT, Kan. — No. 2 Inman couldn’t overcome an early deficit and fell 8-1 to No. 5 Oskaloosa in the Class 2-1A state softball championship Friday at Green Sports Complex.

The Teutons end their historic season with a 24-2 record, while the Bears end their title season with a 25-5 record.

The Bears struck quickly, scoring twice in the top of the first on an RBI double by Keirstyn Mitchell and an RBI single from Harper Heston.

Inman starter Lyla Levin pitched all seven innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs, six earned, while striking out six and walking four.

Oskaloosa’s Lily Pullen was dominant in the circle, giving up just three hits and one run over seven innings. She struck out 13 and walked one.

Leadoff hitter Maddi Parsons paced Inman with two of the team’s three hits.

Mitchell led Oskaloosa at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Mayzie Peak and Parris Marsh also had multiple hits.&nbsp;

SALINA, Kan. — Strong pitching was on display Friday, but Rock Creek came through with timely hits late to defeat McPherson 3-1 in eight innings in the Class 4A state baseball semifinals.

The Bullpups fall to 26-4 and will face Paola in the third place game.

McPherson broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth when Brock Richardson delivered an RBI single to plate the game's first run.

Rock Creek answered in the top of the seventh, tying the game on a fielder’s choice by Noah Valburg. The Mustangs then took the lead for good in the top of the eighth, scoring twice on a Donavan Debita RBI single and a sacrifice bunt by Valburg.

Ryker Zoeller earned the win for Rock Creek, tossing a complete game. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run over eight innings, striking out six and walking three.

Logan Beede took the loss for McPherson in relief. Starter Carter Allen was strong on the mound, giving up one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Richardson went 2-for-3 to lead the Bullpups at the plate. Debita also had two hits for the Mustangs, while Valburg drove in two runs from the seven spot in the lineup.

The McPherson and Inman softball teams will each play for their first-ever state championships after winning semifinal matchups earlier Friday afternoon.

McPherson advanced to the Class 4A title game in Salina, while Inman secured a spot in the Class 2-1A final in Pratt. Both championship games are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The Bullpups are now 30-0 after the victory, while the Indians fall to 25-5.

Addie Herrera put the Bullpups on the board in the first inning with an RBI double. McPherson added another run in the second when Chapman helped her own cause with a run-scoring single down the left-field line.

Herrera finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead McPherson at the plate. Chapman, Kynedi Huggard and Haely Hagemann also collected two hits each.

Clearwater’s Trista Welty took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits over six innings. Makena Hampton went 2-for-3 to lead the Indians offensively.

The Bullpups will go for their first-ever state title in program history at 5 p.m. this evening when they play the winner of Eudora/Fort Scott.

This is the second extra inning walk-off victory for the Teutons in the last 24 hours.

The game was tied at 1 when a Bluestem error allowed the winning run to score, sending the Teutons to their first-ever state title game.

Both teams showcased dominant pitching. Inman’s Lyla Levin went the distance, striking out nine and walking none while allowing one run on eight hits across 10 innings. Bluestem’s Pilar Cox was equally impressive, fanning 16 over nine innings and surrendering just two runs, one earned, on seven hits and three walks.

Bluestem took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jewel Carlton delivered an RBI single. Inman answered in the fourth, as Levin singled up the middle to drive in the tying run.

Levin, Maddi Parsons and Taylor Froese each tallied two hits for Inman, with Levin also recording an RBI and a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Inman swiped four bases in the win.

Lilly Husman led Bluestem with a 3-for-5 performance from the leadoff spot, while Carlton went 2-for-4 with the team’s lone RBI.

The win comes a day after the Swathers picked up their first-ever state tournament victory. They improve to 18-6 on the season, while the Bluejays fall to 17-13 and will play for 3rd Place this afternoon.

Andrew Huxman delivered the game-winning hit with a single down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring the decisive run after Hesston rallied from a 6-0 hole.

Sabetha jumped in front early, scoring one run on an error in the first and five more in the second on a string of hits, including a double by Jayton Meyer and a single by Reid Mitchell.

Hesston chipped away at the lead before completing the comeback in the seventh. Tanner McAllister tied the game and Huxman followed with the walk-off hit to send the Swathers to the championship.

Tim Rhodes earned the win in relief, tossing three hitless innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Huxman started the game on the mound, allowing three hits and six runs, four earned, over two innings.

McAllister led the way for the Hesston offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Keagan Shelite added two hits, and Jacob Burkholder stole a pair of bases.

Authorities are continuing to investigate an undisclosed matter involving students and/or staff of Nickerson USD 309, with a charging decision expected in the coming days.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office confirmed on May 13, 2025, that it launched an investigation at the request of the Reno County Sheriff’s Office. Though specific details remain sealed, officials stated that the matter remains active and no arrests have been made.

"Once the investigation is complete, all findings will be presented to the appropriate charging authority for formal review and consideration of any potential charges," the statement read. Law enforcement also cited the need to protect the integrity of the case and the rights of those involved as reasons for withholding further information.

On May 23, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office announced it had been asked by its Reno County counterpart to review the findings of the investigation. That review began after documents were submitted on May 21.

On May 29, paperwork was being filed in Reno County District Court to officially appoint the Sedgwick County DA’s Office as the "Specially Appointed Prosecutor" in the case. Once the appointment is finalized, charging documents are expected to follow.

A formal announcement outlining the charging decision will be released early next week, according to officials.

The nature of the investigation and the identities of those involved have not been disclosed.

Sedgwick County DA releases information regarding investigation in Nickerson

Both the McPherson Bullpups and Hesston Swathers advanced to their respective state semifinals with quarterfinal victories Thursday.

SALINA, Kan. — Ian Razak tossed a complete game and helped his own cause at the plate as No. 1 McPherson edged No. 8 Tonganoxie 3-1 in Thursday’s Class 4A state quarterfinal at Dean Evans Stadium.

The win moved the Bullpups into Friday's semifinal with a 26-3 record, while the Chieftains end their season with a 16-12 mark.

Razak allowed just five hits and an unearned run over seven innings, striking out seven and walking two. He also drove in the Bullpups’ first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Tonganoxie tied the game in the third, capitalizing on a McPherson error to score its lone run.

The Bullpups reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Brody Seidl delivered an RBI single, and Carter Allen followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring home another run, giving McPherson a 3-1 advantage it would not relinquish.

Seidl, Razak, Cade Strathman and Cowen Huggard each recorded a hit. Seidl, Razak and Allen each had an RBI, and Seidl added two stolen bases.

Tonganoxie’s Everett Holland led all hitters, going 2-for-3.

Merek Davenport was charged with the loss for Tonganoxie. He went six innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out four and walking three.

The Bullpups will face No. 5 St. George-Rock Creek on Friday at 1:15 p.m. in the semifinals.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Blayne Wilson went 4-for-5 at the plate, helping lead No. 5 Hesston to its first-ever win at the state tournament with an 11-6 victory over No. 4 Silver Lake in the Class 3A quarterfinals Thursday at Tointon Family Stadium.

Hesston improves their record to 17-6 on the season, while Silver Lake ends their season 21-8.

Wilson singled in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to pace the Swathers’ 14-hit attack.

Hesston broke through in the top of the third with three consecutive singles, including a two-run base hit from Keagan Shelite to open the scoring.

Silver Lake responded with a six-run fifth inning on just three hits. Trent Harris and Dysen Schooler each drove in two runs on groundouts, while Landon Miller and Drew Womack added RBI singles.

Brody Curran earned the win for the Swathers, allowing three hits and six runs over five innings with five strikeouts and five walks. Tanner McAllister and Andrew Huxman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to close it out.

Shelite finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Landen Meyer and McAllister added multiple hits.&nbsp;

Silver Lake was limited to four hits, one each by Miller, Cathcart, Johnson and Womack. The Eagles showed discipline at the plate with six walks, including two from Cathcart.

The Swathers will face No. 8 Sabetha on Friday at 11 a.m. The Bluejays defeated top-seed Jefferson West, 2-0 on Thursday.&nbsp;

⚾ McPherson, Hesston each advance to state semifinals

Both the McPherson Bullpups and Inman Teutons advanced to their respective state semifinals with quarterfinal victories Thursday.

SALINA, Kan. — A six-run sixth inning powered the No. 1 McPherson Bullpups to a 10-1 victory over No. 8 Circle in Thursday’s Class 4A softball state semifinal at Salina South High School.

The win improved the Bullpups to 29-0 on the season, while Circle ends their season at 20-9.

After leading 4-1 in the sixth inning, Carmin Pavlovich’s two-run single sparked the outburst, followed by a three-run home run from Addison Chapman and an RBI double by Haely Hagemann that helped put the game out of reach with a six-run frame.

McPherson took an early lead in the first inning when Addie Herrera grounded into a double play that still allowed a run to score. Circle tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a Logan James RBI double to center.

The Bullpups regained control with a two-run fourth, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single down the left field line by Ava Romero to make it 3-1.

Chapman went the distance in the circle, earning the win, allowing just four hits and one run. She improved her record to 14-0 on the season. She struck out four and walked one. Circle starter Whitney Wilbur took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.

McPherson tallied 10 hits in the win. Chapman drove in three runs, while Pera Bauer went 2-for-3 to lead the team in hits. Pavlovich and Bauer each swiped multiple bases, as the Bullpups racked up eight stolen bags.

Harlee Fowler, Ava Tunnell, James, and Harley McLaughlin each had one hit for Circle. James drove in the Thunderbirds’ lone run.

The Bullpups will play on Friday at 11 a.m. against No. 4 Clearwater.

Class 2-1A — Inman 7, St. Mary's Colgan 6

PRATT, Kan. — No. 2 Inman is headed back to the Class 2-1A state softball semifinals after a dramatic 7-6, walk-off win in eight innings over No. 7 St. Mary’s-Colgan on Thursday at the Green Sports Complex.

The win improved the Teutons to 23-1 on the season, while the Panthers end their season with a 16-12 mark.

Making their second straight state appearance and fifth overall, the&nbsp; Teutons built an early 5-0 lead through two innings before St. Mary’s-Colgan rallied. 

The Panthers, down to their final two strikes in the top of the seventh, surged ahead 6-5 on a go-ahead two-run home run to straightaway center by Bella Ascanio, the same player Inman’s Lyla Levin was dueling in the circle.

But Levin, who gave up the homer, immediately answered. She led off the bottom of the seventh with a double off Ascanio, then came around to score the tying run on a clutch RBI single through the left side by Taylor Froese.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, Levin stepped to the plate once more with the winning run at third and delivered, her fifth hit of the game, a single to right that sent Inman into the semifinals.

Levin was outstanding on both sides of the ball, going 5-for-5 at the plate and earning her 16th win of the season in the circle. She scattered 11 hits and allowed three earned runs across eight innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Froese went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including the game-tying hit in the seventh. Maddi Parsons added two hits, and the Lady Teutons also turned a key double play defensively.

Colgan's Ascanio gave up 13 hits and seven runs, six earned, with six strikeouts and three walks over 7 2/3 innings.

St. Mary’s-Colgan got multiple-hit efforts from Katie Duncan, Kara Osborn and Brooklyn Barrows, while Ascanio and Kylee Kretchmar each drove in two runs.

Inman will play in the semifinal on Friday at 11 a.m. against No. 3 Leon-Bluestem.
