Georgia Kay Walden, 72, died May 22, 2025, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born September 21, 1952, in Hutchinson, to Oliver A. and Ocie Z. (Latham) Smith.

Georgia attended Hutchinson schools. She worked in the office and on the production floor at Phillips News Company for several years before going to work as a customer service representative at Banker’s Life Insurance Company for 20 years until she retired in 2022. Georgia loved playing the Hee Haw slot machines at various casinos and celebrating the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, and making them special for her kids and grandkids.

On January 28, 1972, she married Richard W. Walden, in Hutchinson. He died August 14, 2010.

Georgia is survived by: her son, John Walden of Hutchinson; daughter, Pamela Asche (Tad) of Winfield; grandchildren, Amy Walden (Cody Yingling) of Hutchinson, Shawn Walden of Hutchinson, Dominick Hutchinson (Courtney) of Kansas City, MO, Megan Hutchinson of Kansas City, MO, Zachary Hutchinson (Audrey Ullum) of Hutchinson, Landyn Walden of Hutchinson, Katelyn Mays (Logan) of Winfield, Zachary Klug of Winfield, Sage Piña of Phoenix, AZ, Tyler Walden (Shea) of Bennington, Bret Walden of Bennington; great-grandchildren, Acelyn McPhillips, Madison Yingling, Rhyder Yingling, Daxton Yingling, Collins Mays, Bowen Mays, Nash Walden, Parklynn Walden, Kolter Walden, Kyler Walden, Kaysen Walden, Peyton Moeller; brothers, Frank Smith (Brenda) of Tyler, TX, Karl Smith and Rick Smith (Arlene) of Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Karen Smith and Connie Smith of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Brenda Koehn of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery. &nbsp;

Russell B. (Brandon) Gagnebin, age 49, of Edwardsville, KS, passed away May 21, 2025. He was born June 1, 1975, to Russell and Shirley (Brown) Gagnebin, in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;

Brandon was a 1993 graduate of Fairfield High School and attended Fort Hays State University. He worked as an IT specialist for Collingwood Grain and Impact Design for many years. Some people know a lot about a few things while others know a little about a lot of things. Brandon truly knew a lot about a lot of things. He excelled at computers, could tackle almost any home remodel project, detailed cars, and most recently just painted his first car. He could make rag quilts and soap and was an excellent cook preparing many meals for his family. Brandon was very quick-witted. He loved his family immensely.&nbsp;

Brandon is survived by: his parents Russell and Shirley Gagnebin of Abbyville, KS; sisters Gina (Rob) Edmisson of St. Joseph, MO and Vicki (Theron) Barton of Shawnee, KS; nieces Cierra (Meshach) Kennedy of Kansas City, KS, Peyton (David) Titus of Shawnee, KS, Presley (Jeremiah) Ceasar of Gardner, KS, and Tavia Barton, Shawnee, KS; nephew Muunjiza (MJ) Barton of Shawnee, KS; great-nephew and great-nieces Kingston, Azlynn, and Mylah Kennedy and Synova Ceasar; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his beloved dog, Maggie.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — SaltCity Racing delivered high-speed thrills Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, highlighted by a full slate of IMCA feature races and a record turnout for the annual Kids Night.

Jacye Reimer of Hutchinson claimed the win in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, holding off fellow Hutchinson driver David Brown and Wichita’s Colten Kelly to take the checkered flag.

Randy Wilson of Wichita led the IMCA Modified feature, finishing ahead of Hutchinson’s Jake Nightingale and Casey Jo Gemmill of Goddard.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, Morgan Olmstead of Overton, Nebraska, took the top spot. Cody Williams of Minneapolis, Kansas, finished second, with Salina’s Garrit Caswell in third.

Salina’s Warren Huffman won the IMCA Northern Sport Mod A Feature, finishing ahead of Brian May of Spearville and Dodge City’s Joey Maupin.

Promoter Phil Nightengale said the event’s Kids Night drew a record 211 children, the highest attendance in the event’s history.

SaltCity Racing returns to the track Friday, May 31, with a special event featuring the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour and Super Stocks. Pits open at 3 p.m., gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., and racing starts at 7 p.m.

SaltCity Racing has big turnout for Kids Night

SALINA, Kan. — Kansas Wesleyan University will honor a unique father-son legacy this fall as Dave Dallas and his son, Drew Dallas, are inducted into the Jerry Jones Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend.

The Hall of Fame breakfast and induction ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, inside Muir Gymnasium on the KWU campus.

Dave Dallas, who served as KWU’s head football coach from 1997 to 2013, helped rebuild the program and led the Coyotes to KCAC championships in 2001 and 2002. He ranks second in program history with 94 wins and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in 2001. Known for his leadership and commitment to student-athletes, he coached six NAIA All-Americans and more than 300 All-KCAC honorees.

His son, Drew Dallas, followed in his footsteps, first as a quarterback for the Coyotes from 2006 to 2007, then as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Drew will be inducted for his post-graduate accomplishments, having led Hutchinson Community College to a 49-5 record over five seasons as head coach. His Blue Dragon teams have claimed four Jayhawk Conference titles and two NJCAA National Championships, cementing his status as one of the premier coaches in junior college football.

Scott Long of Ocoee, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at Orlando Health Central. He was 62 years old.

Born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on October 8, 1962, Scott was the son of William and Joan (Jacobs) Long, Sr. He graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Kansas State University, where he developed a lifelong love for the Wildcats. A true sports enthusiast, Scott also enjoyed golfing and cheering on his favorite teams.

For many years, Scott worked in the family business in Hutchinson before relocating with his family to Ocoee, Florida. On April 8, 1985, Scott married his high school sweetheart, Tenley Wiard, at Hutchinson United Methodist Church. Together, they shared 40 wonderful years of marriage.

Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Tenley Long, and their son Kyle Long, daughter-in-law Ashley Long, and cherished granddaughter Kennedy Long, all of Beaver, West Virginia. He is also survived by his father, William Long Sr.; his brother, Jim Long; and his sister, Ann Farley, all of Hutchinson. Additionally, Scott leaves behind nieces Tessa Farley (Miles) of Hutchinson, Sara Long of Fort Worth, Texas, and Rachel Burke (Shawn) of Midlothian, Texas, and nephew Seth Farley of Hutchinson, along with many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Long, and his brother, Bill Long Jr.

Scott will be remembered for his humor, his warm heart, and his unwavering love for his family and alma mater. A celebration of his life will be held in Hutchinson at a later date. Hutchinson Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — SaltCity Racing is gearing up for it's third race of the 2025 season with the Murphy Tractor and Equipment IMCA Season Opener at the Kansas State Fairgrounds this evening.&nbsp;

"The IMCA is the largest sanctioned bodied through the country," Phil Nightingale with SaltCity Racing said. "They have over 10,000 racers registered to race throughout the country, that's one reason why I went with that sanctioning body at the Kansas State Fairgrounds for that sole reason."

The four different IMCA classes that will be racing include IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock and IMCA Northern SportMod.

"The one that will probably put on the best show is what we call the A mods, they're the fastest cars we have," Nightingale said. "That's a modified car with open front wheels and about a 400 horse motor. Then we have the B mods, which is kind of just like the A mods, but it's just a little less horsepower and a little less money to make that car go. Then we have the stock car class, which looks just like a stock car and those guys put on a great show. Then we have what we call the hobby stock class, which is almost like a stock car, just take the glass out of it, put role bars in it and you've got some different rules to follow. Those hobby stock guys put on a great show, we had them one time last year and so excited to have them back for 2025."

This evening also serves as Kids Night at SaltCity Racing.

"Every kid under 12 gets in free," Nightingale said. "The first 100 kids is going to get a ton of prizes, so you want to be first in line for the first 100. We've had some great sponsors that have stepped up and paid for those kids to get in free. There will be all kinds of prizes and giveaways, we're also going to have tons of neat vehicles for kids to play on and touch. We're going to have police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, the SWAT team is going to be there, the National Guard is going to be there."&nbsp;

Riders from across Kansas will hit the road this Saturday for the fourth annual “Cruise for the Cure” poker run, a motorcycle (and road-legal vehicle) event organized to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Reno County. Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the charity ride has grown into a community-fueled tradition drawing more than 100 participants in past years.

The event begins Saturday morning, May 24, at Salty Cycles, located at 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with engines revving for the start at 10:30 a.m. Riders will embark on an 87-mile route that stretches into neighboring Harvey County, stopping at four checkpoints: Buhler Gas Company in Buhler, Lighthouse Coffee in Inman, Dan’s Cycle in Hesston, and the The Barn in Burrton, before returning to Bretz Injury Law for lunch, raffles and awards.

Entry fees are $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three. The poker element of the ride includes drawing cards at each stop, with a final skill game determining the last card. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, second-best hand, and even the worst hand—a playful tradition that adds fun to the serious cause.

“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz, an organizer with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost every family, and the Cancer Council of Reno County does a tremendous job helping those who fall through the cracks of insurance and other support systems.”

Half of the entry fees go directly to the Cancer Council, which provides assistance with transportation, food and other expenses for local patients. Additional fundraising will include raffles with prizes donated by area businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. A free lunch catered by Cancun Mexican Grill will be served to participants upon return.

And the event isn’t just for bikers. “If you’ve got a road-legal vehicle—even a Toyota Camry—you’re welcome to join us,” Ensz said. “It’s about raising money and awareness. The more, the merrier.”

The event marks the first poker run of the season for Bretz Injury Law, which organizes four charity rides annually, benefiting various causes including Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Pamela Gayle “Pam” Popp, 77, of Hutchinson, died May 21, 2025, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born March 21, 1948, in Hutchinson, to Ralph and Eula Belle (Alumbaugh) Williams.

Pam graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1966. She worked as an optical technician at Singleton-Joyce Optical for many years and then at Southwind Eyecare for over 20 years until she retired. Pam was an avid reader, enjoyed flower gardening, and making breads and candies for the holidays.

On November 12, 1976, she married Danny E. Popp, in Hutchinson. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughters, Sharon Swarts (Casey) and Tonya Wolfe; grandchildren, Elizabeth Swarts and Justin Swarts, all of Hutchinson; sister, Cara Jean Williams of Carolina Shores, NC; niece, Cindy Summers of Loveland, CO; nephew, Robert Simpson, of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Darlene Miller and Shirley Wise.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave., Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Community College baseball sophomore first baseball&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;was named to the 2025 All-KJCCC Gold Glove team on Thursday.
Named All-Jayhawk West honorable mention last week, the sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colorado, is just the sixth Blue Dragon player in program history to post a 1.000 fielding percentage with more than 150 defensive chances.
Maher started 60 games at first base this season and did not commit an error in 418 total defensive chances. Maher's 418 defensive chances ranks seventh in Blue Dragon single-season history. His 412 putouts are four-most in Blue Dragon history, third most by a Hutchinson first baseman.
Maher helped the 2025 Blue Dragons lead the Jayhawk West in defense this season with a .972 team fielding percentage.
Over his two years with the Blue Dragons, Maher committed only three errors in 467 total defensive chances.
Maher's .994 career fielding percentage breaks the old career record of .993 set by Scott Wolverton in 2017 and 2018. Maher is only the sixth Blue Dragon with a career fielding percentage of .990 with 150 defensive chances or more.
Since the KJCCC started awarding Gold Glove awards to positions instead of one overall winner before the 2021 season, Maher is the second Blue Dragon to be named to the conference Gold Glove team. Ben Men McLaughlin (2022) is the other Blue Dragon to earn conference defensive honors.
The Blue Dragons finished 40-21 this season, placing third in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons swept the Allen Red Devils in two games in the Plains District opening-round series at Hobart-Detter Field. The Blue Dragons went 1-2 in the Plains District Tournament in Salina.
Offensively, Maher hit .299 for the season (58 for 194) with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 41 RBIs and 59 runs scored.

Virginia I. Waggoner, 81, of South Hutchinson, died May 16, 2025. She was born December 7, 1943, in Syracuse, Kansas, to John and Myrtle (Parks) Bee.&nbsp;

Virginia loved crossword puzzles, playing cards, and gameshows. She was very determined to keep her independence. Her hobbies kept her mind sharp. Virginia loved her trusty canine companion, Jojo, who was always by her side and even followed her into the afterlife. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Virginia is survived by: children, Coletta Herbold of Yucca Valley, CA and Stacey Skains of Ventura, CA.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband, Blaine Waggoner.&nbsp;

Willard K. “Bill” Boldenow, 96, of Hutchinson, died May 19, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1929, in Hoisington, to William J. and Helen C. (Lettau) Boldenow.

Bill graduated from Hoisington High School, Kansas State University, and received a master’s degree in education from Fort Hays State University. He served with the 40th Infantry Division in the United States Army from 1951-1953 and was stationed in Korea. Bill began his career as a high school sports coach and then went to work as an underwriter for Travelers Insurance and lived in Kansas City, Minneapolis, MN, and Cleveland, OH, before returning to Kansas and working as an agent for State Farm Insurance. He retired as a sales rep for Roberts Hutch-Line. Bill was an avid golfer and fan of K-State Wildcat football and basketball. He was a member of the Lions club as well as other clubs and organizations. Bill went on Kansas Honor Flight #15 to Washington, DC, in 2014. He was a life member of K-State Alumni Association and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hutchinson.

On February 5, 1956, Bill married Marilyn F. Miller in Burdett. She survives.

Also surviving are: nieces, Debbie Adams of Hutchinson, Sheila Knoll (Gary) of Topeka, Tanya Behnke (Wayne) of Bushton, Kathy Cmelik of Yukon, OK, Lori Kade (Tony) of Granbury, TX; nephews, Craig Black (Joni) of Emporia, Jon Devine (Jriz) of Fort Worth, TX; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Bonnie Black and her husband, George.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

(Lettau) Boldenow.Bill graduated from Hoisington High School, Kansas State University, and received a master’s degree in education from Fort Hays State University. He served with the 40th Infantry Division in the United States Army from 1951-1953 and was stationed in Korea. Bill began his career as a high school sports coach and then went to work as an underwriter for Travelers Insurance and lived in Kansas City, Minneapolis, MN, and Cleveland, OH, before returning to Kansas and working as an agent for State Farm Insurance. He retired as a sales rep for Roberts Hutch-Line. Bill was an avid golfer and fan of K-State Wildcat football and basketball. He was a member of the Lions club as well as other clubs and organizations. Bill went on Kansas Honor Flight #15 to Washington, DC, in 2014. Temperatures varied widely across the High Plains this week, with parts of the region experiencing conditions up to 8 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Cooler-than-normal temperatures were observed in the western and northern portions.

Heavy rainfall blanketed much of the region, particularly from North Dakota to northern Nebraska, where weekly precipitation totals ranged from 400 to 600 percent above normal. These significant rains—between 2 to 8 inches above normal—prompted widespread improvements in drought conditions, including moderate to extreme drought in the Dakotas and Nebraska.

Rainfall also brought relief to parts of northern Wyoming and eastern Kansas. In those areas, precipitation totals were up to 3 inches above normal, leading to improvements in moderate to severe drought and areas of abnormal dryness.

Despite the beneficial moisture, some areas remained dry. Southwest Nebraska and western Wyoming saw expansions of extreme drought (D3), while southern Wyoming and Colorado experienced worsening severe and moderate drought. Abnormal dryness also spread across eastern Colorado.

The shifting conditions highlight the variability of the High Plains climate and the challenges of managing drought across such a large and diverse region.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East Avenue F and South Elm.

Hadley Methodist Church was started as a mission in 1889 by the Rev. C.R. Thoburn. This mission was frequently called the Boot &amp; Shoe Sunday School. The first photo shows the chapel, completed in 1890, at 401 E. Ave. F.

The second photo shows the same structure in 1906.

This building was remodeled into the Hadley M.E. Church about 1910. The third photo shows the church in 1911.

The church was very active. It even had a church baseball team. The fourth photo shows that team in 1915.

The last church pastor was Marien Holbert in 1975 when it disbanded.

The building was later reborn as the Hadley Daycare Center, with Judith Teafol becoming its director.

In 1979, the daycare was moved to 330 Charles St. The building had one last revival in 1992 as the Hutchinson Community Ministries clothing center and social services.

It eventually became the private residence of William Brower. The fifth photo shows the structure in 2017 right before it was condemned and razed.

The sixth photo shows the vacant property today at 401 E. Ave. F, now owned by the Hutchinson Land Bank.

Donna Lou Strube, 81, formerly of Claflin, died May 16, 2025, at her home at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. She was born May 4, 1944, in Great Bend, KS, to Albert H. and Viola L. (Knop) Soeken.

Donna graduated from Claflin High School in 1962. She attended Kansas State University, and received her cosmetology license in Manhattan, KS. Donna was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Claflin, as well as serving as organist for many years. &nbsp;She was also active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Donna enjoyed camping, travelling, gardening and tending to her flowers. Her most cherished memories were time spent with family and friends.&nbsp;

On November 29, 1964, she married her lifelong love, Arthur P. “Art” Strube, in Claflin. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Thanksgiving of 2024.

Donna is survived by: &nbsp;daughters, Tonia Navarro of Hutchinson, Terese (Wade) Beal of Harper, Tiffany (Brent) Steinle of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren, Joshua Navarro, Haley Navarro, Taylor Claflin, Kendra Claflin and Kellen Claflin, Sydney Steinle and Austin Steinle; siblings, Merle (Ileen) Soeken, Marilyn Buczinski, Nancy Soeken; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Art Strube (he died on December 11, 2024); and brother-in-law, Larry Buczinski.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, 121 5th St., Claflin, officiated by Pastor Daniel Harders. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Claflin. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 5-8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

Steven D. “Steve” Langvardt, 71 of Hutchinson died May 14, 2025 at Select Specialty Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Steve was born August 25, 1953 in Junction City to Frank Eldon and Sarah Maye (Diehl) Langvardt.

Steve attended high school in Junction City, Kansas; Mesa, Arizona; and graduated from Clay Center, Kansas. He attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, his freshman year and then transferred to Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska. Steve graduated from Hastings in 1976 with the Bachelors of Science degree in Business. After graduating from college, Steve moved to North Platte, Nebraska and worked for the Firestone Tire Company and Union Pacific Railroad as a Switchman/Brakeman. His son Jess was born in 1982. Wanting to be closer to his family, they moved to Clay Center, Kansas. He worked for his dad at the Palmer Grain Elevator and attended Kansas State to further his education in accounting. His son Adam was born in 1985. In 1987, the family moved to Hutchinson and Steve worked as an accountant until his retirement.

Steve was a member of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church and was on the session governing board at the time of his death. His strong faith in Christ provided him a firm foundation through life. His family, church congregation, and lifelong friends would be a constant pillar of strength, encouragement, and love.&nbsp;

Steve lived a life marked by unwavering integrity and deep faith. Family and friends were very important to him. Steve enjoyed spending his free time with his sons, practicing skills for the sport of the season, as well as time spent with the family pets. Watching Nebraska and K State sports was also a favorite pastime. Steve had a love for weightlifting and shared that love with his sons which sparked the trajectory of their careers. The camaraderie he had with fellow lifters resulted in lifelong friendships. Steve also spent many hours on the road and on the bleachers watching his sons compete in football, baseball, soccer, basketball, and wrestling. He was very proud of their accomplishments on and off the field.&nbsp;

On August 4, 1979, he married Jane Ellen Robertson, in Tekamah, Nebraska. They shared over 45 years of marriage.

Steve is survived by: his wife, Jane Langvardt; sons, Jess (Jessica) Langvardt, and Adam Langvardt; brothers, Joel Langvardt, and David Langvardt; grandchildren, Ryker, Bria, and Tyce Langvardt; and numerous extended family members.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2025, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 700 E. 25th Hutchinson, with Pastor Craig Waetke officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Steven 'Steve' Dale Langvardt |1953-2025|

With just 109 days until the gates open for the 2025 Kansas State Fair, the countdown is officially on — and today’s big announcement has music fans buzzing. Brian Schultz, General Manager of the Kansas State Fair, joined KW to reveal the latest headlining act: chart-topping alternative rock band The Fray will take the stage at the Nex-Tech Grandstand on Saturday, September 13, with special guests Plain White T’s opening the show.

Schultz also discussed a recent ruling from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), known as the “No Junk Fee” rule, which went into effect on May 12. This rule requires all ticketing platforms to disclose full pricing — including service fees and taxes — upfront, instead of surprising customers at checkout.

“We’ve already updated our systems,” said Schultz. “Now you’ll see exactly what you’re paying before you click ‘Buy.’”

While most of the grandstand schedule is set, a few slots — including the Tuesday night of fair week — remain open. Schultz hinted that those announcements may depend on tour routing changes for available acts.

“We don’t want to just fill the night for the sake of it,” he said. “We’re working to bring something exciting — but it has to make sense for us and the fans.”

The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education is meeting this evening at the District Administration Building at 4:15 p.m.&nbsp;

On the agenda for the meeting is the approval of the March 2025 treasurer's report and then the board will go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel matters pursuant to non-elected personnel exception under the Kansas Open Meetings Act.&nbsp;

The board will then consider approving the personnel report.&nbsp;

USD 308 Board of Education to hold special meeting 

For children coping with the death of a loved one, navigating grief can be a lonely, confusing journey. But a special one-day camp hosted by Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in partnership with the Cosmosphere, aims to offer young hearts a space to heal — and a chance to connect with others on similar paths.

“A Space to Grieve” is a free day camp for children who have experienced the loss of a family member or close friend, regardless of whether hospice care was involved. The camp is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to just after 2:30 p.m. at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.

“It's not just about sadness — it's about hope, healing, and connection,” said Cindy Dubovich,&nbsp; from Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County. “Kids are surrounded by others who truly understand what they’re feeling. That shared experience is powerful.”

The camp, which has been held for several years, combines therapeutic activities with fun space-themed programming provided by Cosmosphere staff. Children participate in group sessions focused on grief, creative art expression, and play — tools to help process loss in a healthy, age-appropriate way.

Jennifer Sharp, also with Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, emphasized the importance of peer support.

“They may not talk every day after camp, but there’s something reassuring about knowing someone else your age gets it,” Sharp said. “Some of the kids will run into each other at school or local events and continue that sense of connection.”

Though the camp only lasts a single day, its impact often lingers. Sharp noted that her own child participated in the program and found lasting benefit from interacting with others in similar situations.

This year’s camp includes collaboration with local Hutchinson artists to help children explore their emotions through art. Parents will also receive resources to better support their children at home.

“There’s no manual for grieving, especially for kids,” Sharp said. “We encourage journaling or activities that honor their loved one — whatever helps them express what they’re feeling.”

The deadline to register is May 26. The camp is limited to 50 participants, and early registration is encouraged.

Thanks to community partnerships and local support, the camp is free to attend. Lunch will be provided, and children from all over Kansas are welcome.

“This camp isn’t about saying goodbye,” Dubovich said. “It’s about helping kids find a way forward, together.”

 Ellie Foos, a senior at Hutchinson High School, who graduated on Sunday, was the school’s only student completing the full International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program — a milestone capping off 13 years in the USD 308 school district.

Foos, who has attended Hutchinson public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, is recognized not only for her academic achievements but also for her strong commitment to community service and leadership.

A standout on the tennis court, Foos qualified for the state tournament in both her junior and senior years. Off the court, she has been deeply involved in local and state youth initiatives. She volunteers through Rise Up Reno and serves on the Youth Philanthropy Council, helping to direct charitable efforts in the community.

She also holds positions on the Youth Advisory Board at the Hutchinson Public Library and formerly served on the Youth City Council. Her civic engagement extends statewide through her role with the Kansas Youth Prevention Action Council (KYPAC), where she advocates on behalf of Kansas youth at both the state and national levels.

This fall, Foos will attend the University of Kansas, where she has been accepted into the Honors Program and the prestigious LEAD (Legal Education Accelerated Degree) program. The LEAD track enables students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in just six years. Foos plans to pursue a career in law, aiming to combine her passion for advocacy with a legal education.

“I’m excited to continue using my voice to support and uplift others,” Foos said. “The IB program has prepared me for the challenges ahead, and I look forward to building on what I’ve learned here in Hutchinson.”
