The Hutchinson Sports Arena renovation repayment progress is moving along well, according to information given to the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday.

"Renovations were $29.4 million," said City Attorney Paul Brown. "Hutchinson Community College contributes $4.5 million toward that project. It's approximately $500,000 per year from them. We'll finish up, according to my calculations, in September of 2026. The amount unpaid on that bond issue for it is, after we pay in October, we pay $2.8 million and some change in October, the balance will be $13,664,000."

That puts the projected payoff date for the city's portion as mid-2024. 

The City Council took a close look at the lease contract, which was brought before them Tuesday, and they want some changes before they'll approve it.

"We pay all the utilities, they pay all, what they call the commodities," Brown said. "Then, we each reimburse each other for 50% of those costs, so we basically split the expenses of the Sports Arena."

The proposal as sent over from the college would have made their payment to the city a flat fee. The council wants to keep the arrangement basically as it was before, in an effort not to get eaten up by inflation. 

Brown will send over language to that effect for the college's consideration.

Ronald (Ron) A. Adelhardt, 87, of Partridge, died September 5, 2021, in Quinter. He was born March 15, 1934, in rural Cunningham to John and Emma (Simon) Adelhardt.

Ron married Patricia R. Landwehr on Aug. 20, 1960, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sharon, commencing nearly 57 more trips around the sun with her.

He was a graduate of St. Leo Catholic School, Cunningham High School (’54), Garden City Community College, and Idaho State University. At a time when high school was optional, he was encouraged by a friend to use his tall stature to help the local basketball team. Ron’s first walk through the gym doors would impact his career choice and many students and athletes in the Partridge and Haven school districts.

Ron attended college on basketball scholarships, helping both the GCCC Broncbusters and the ISU Bengals reach the NJCAA and NCAA tournaments, accomplishments that you only learned if you inquired.

In 1960, Ron and Pat moved to Partridge where he began coaching and teaching 7-8 math and science and 1-8 physical education at Partridge Grade School. He held high expectations for his students and players, though not higher than those he held for himself. In 1999, Ron retired from teaching for the Partridge Rural School District and USD 312 after 35 years, and in 2012 he retired from driving a school bus after 53 years.

While Ron highly valued his profession, it was surpassed by his love for Pat, his kids and grandkids, his large extended family, his farm upbringing on the Kansas prairie near St. Leo, and his Catholic faith. With a ready smile, Ron enjoyed conversing with people, always finding a way to turn the topic to them versus himself. A child of the Great Depression, he took care of what he had, repairing most things to last well beyond their projected years. Ron was a realist, but even during difficult times, he found the good in people and the world. To those who knew and loved him, he was a giant among men, both literally and figuratively.

Survivors include: daughters, Cindy Hertel (Joe) of Ellis and Ronna Schultz (Doug) of Grainfield; son, Danny Adelhardt (Debi) of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Jackie Adelhardt of Nickerson; grandchildren, Sara Britton (Kelly), Katie Closs (Evan), Abby Power (Keller), Larry (Jenifer), John, Joseph, and Laurissa Adelhardt; Seri (Olivia) and Drew (Megan) Hertel; Cas (Ashley), Ty, and Tyra Schultz; and Reed Adelhardt; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brother, John (Linda) of Nashville; sister, Rita of Cunningham; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Adelhardt; granddaughter, Rachel Adelhardt; grandson, Dal Schultz; sisters, Marcella Ford and Eleanor Zogelman; brothers, Alois, Eugene, Frederick, and Elmer; and seven grandchildren named by God.

Parish rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson. Prior to the rosary, the family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the church.&nbsp; A reception will follow the rosary in the parish hall. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, preceded by a family rosary at 9:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery, Partridge. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. Due to COVID, masks are highly encouraged.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly will speak on the campus of Hutchinson Community College on September 16.

According to an email provided to Hutch Post, Governor Kelly will speak between 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the BJ Warner Recital Hall in Stringer Fine Arts Center.

Kelly was in Hutchinson last week to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the watertube boiler division of Superior Boiler. 

Also, Kelly was already slated to be in Hutchinson on the 16th as part of the Governor's Awards event at the Kansas State Fair.

Kelly to speak at HutchCC before awards ceremony at State Fair

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

The 1890s: Things progressed quickly as Hutchinson and Reno County entered their third decade of existence.&nbsp;

1890: A record 10 million bushels of grain were sold through grain elevators in the county. The town of Pretty Prairie relocated closer to the railroad. After approval, the Hutchinson City Council let the first contract for a new sanitary sewer. Nelly Bly made a stop in Hutchinson during her trip around the world. Buhler opened its first school house and the Hutchinson Central School was finished at 5th and Maple.

1891: A deadlocked city council could not agree on a new mayor. After six rounds of voting, the council was split 4-4 on Arthur Little. Mayor R.A. Campbell cast the deciding vote. The four council members who voted no refused to confirm Little as mayor. Campbell then resigned and W.L. Winslow was appointed mayor. The Hutchinson News was sold for $1,900. Haven became an incorporated city and the Supreme Court allowed Hutchinson to continue to dump sewage into Cow Creek.

1982: A fire in Nickerson destroyed four city blocks. The Hutchinson Commercial Club was formed. The organization becomes the driving force in bringing business growth to the city. It is now known as the Chamber of Commerce. Kansas Salt employees strike, demanding they get paid $1.50 for ten hours of work. They were working 12-hour shifts. The mayor of Hutchinson offers aid to the communities of Wellington, Argonia and Harper after a tornado causes significant damage to those communities. Eleven people died. The Dalton Gang tries to rob a bank in Coffeyville. Four members of the gang were shot and killed, including Dick Broadwell of Hutchinson.

1893: Women are now voting but the votes are tabulated separate from the men. More than 1,000 residents left the area during the Cherokee Strip land run. RSVP Table Salt takes first prize at the World's Fair in Chicago. The statewide reunion of the general Army of the Republic meets in Hutchinson. More than 1,000 tents were erected in the city to accommodate the 5,000 visitors.

1894: L.B. Young received a charter to open Kansas Grain Company. An indictment is returned by a federal grand jury against the officers of the defunct Hutchinson National Bank. The men were later acquitted. Salt plants that had been shut down start to reopen again. Hutchinson Salt opens, providing jobs for more than 100 workers. On July 19, a Santa Fe train derailed three miles east of Hutchinson. The Salvation Army was established in Hutchinson. The population of Nickerson falls dramatically after the Santa Fe Railroad moves its roundhouse to Newton because of striking Nickerson workers. Fire in Haven damages the post office and four other buildings.

1895: The State Reformatory opens with 20 inmates arriving from Lansing. One escapes from the prison in a week. A horse-drawn street car ride costs 5 cents. Reno County has the state's largest corn crop at 750,000 bushels. A Santa Fe train was robbed in Sylvia. The Hutchinson City Council approved purchasing privately-owned water works.&nbsp;

There are problems at the reformatory as the board brought charges against Superintendent H.F. Hatch, who was also suspended. Later, the state gives the board at the reformatory the option to resign or be terminated. Hutchinson establishes the first paid fire department. The city discusses whether the Missouri Pacific and Rock Island Railroads are to blame for the high water in the area because their bridges and culverts cannot handle the flow of water. Santa Fe Railroad declares that one of its bridges is not safe because of the high water and is forced to transfer passengers around the area.

1896: Ex-slaves form an organization with 55 members. Reno County hosts its first poultry show. Hutchinson hosts the first meeting of the Kansas Anti-Horse Thief Association.&nbsp;

1897: A familiar name becomes part of Hutchinson as local salt plants are purchased and reorganized into one. The purchase is made by Joy Morton. The plants become Morton Salt. Joy Morton is named president of the company. Hutchinson Public Library opens. Hutchinson Bicycle Club is formed. Races are held east of town. A teacher at the reformatory starts teaching socialism to inmates. The board files a complaint. The teacher is a friend of Gov. John Leedy, who says if the board doesn't like it, they can find a new board. Long-distance telephone is established between Hutchinson and Kansas City.

1898: Rural Free Delivery (RFD) is established. South Hutchinson closes the post office in favor of the RFD. There was a bank robbery in Hutchinson in 1898 as the State Bank of Hutchinson was held up. The Nickerson Normal College opens. Ladies in the city of Hutchinson organize the Soldier Relief Society. The Elks Club is established. Joy Morton purchases a tract of land for a large salt plant that will produce 500 barrels per day. Emerson Carey and C.S. Winchester worked on building a packing house on South Main.

1899: Salt workers organize the largest union in the state of Kansas. The temperature drops to minus 32 degrees, the coldest day on record. New York Gov. Teddy Roosevelt visits Hutchinson. Remains of Hutchinson's first cemetery are moved to the Eastside Cemetery. Seven inmates of the Reno County Jail dig their way out.

The Decades: 1890s

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. -- Seven turnovers, two in back-to-back red zone possessions, doomed No. 1 Hutchinson Community College Saturday night in Coffeyville.

Hutchinson led the contest 7-0 just 52 seconds in after an Albert Nunes scoop-six.

Coffeyville quarterback Will Bohn failed in his attempt to throw the ball away as he scrambled out of the pocket. The ball slipped out of Bohn's hand and Nunes picked it up en route to a 24-yard score.

Coffeyville fumbled away the next possession and Hutchinson found itself with an opportunity to increase the lead.

Instead, the Dragons turned the ball over on downs. Hutchinson was 85% in the red zone last season and scored touchdowns nearly 74% of the time.

Saturday night, the Dragons were 1 of 4 in the red zone with back-to-back turnovers.

Just like the March contest between the two teams, Coffeyville had a chance to tie the game in the first quarter. That drive ended in a missed field goal.

Neither team would score again until Coffeyville added a 28-yard field goal from Forrest Taylor with 4:57 left before the half.

Coffeyville was poised to add another field goal just before the half when Taylor was roughed on the attempt. With 8 seconds left before the break, the Red Ravens took a shot at the end zone and came away with a 7-yard pass to the team's leading receiver Cortarious Wilson. He caught the pass from Jackson Thomson, who replaced Bohn after the early fumbles.

Thomson finished 11 of 24 for 135 yards with the one TD.

Instead of being down one, Coffeyville took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.

Hutchinson averaged 273 yards on the ground a game in the spring. The Dragons were held to 28 yards rushing at the half.

Hutchinson went down by 10 after Rian Green picked up a blocked Trevor Whiteman punt in the end zone.

Miscues on offense and special teams haunted the Blue Dragons.

The Dragons finished with seven turnovers from fumbles, muffed punts and interceptions -- all things head coach Drew Dallas knows his team must fix. "We've got to take ownership . . . and move on because those are things we can control," Dallas said.

Despite the seven turnovers, the Dragons were still in the game to the very last play. "In all honesty, we shouldn't have been in it with the way we played," Dallas said.

Hutchinson looked poised to answer the special teams score after a long Anwar Lewis kick return. Despite the 72-yard return, Hutchinson turned the ball over on downs.

The Blue Dragons pulled within a touchdown after a 21-yard C.J. Moya field goal. Hutchinson went 1 of 4 in the red zone.

After a Coffeyville punt, National Championship game MVP Tye Edwards broke free on a 60-yard scamper. Once in the red zone, an exchange between quarterback Dylan Laible and Edwards hit the turf and was picked up by Coffeyville.

Coffeyville would punt on the next possession and Hutchinson once again entered the red zone. A pass into double coverage was tipped in the air and picked off. Laible went 16 of 33 for 230 and two interceptions.

Despite back-to-back turnovers inside the 20, Hutchinson had a chance to win with 3:08 remaining. Coffeyville face a 3rd and 18 when Thomson found Wilson for a first down.

The Red Ravens ran another minute off the clock before failing to convert on 3rd and 14. Hutchinson was ready to get the ball back with no timeouts when the final miscue reared its ugly head.

A muffed punt gave the ball back to Coffeyville with a chance to run out the clock.

But the Red Ravens were not content with the 17-10 advantage. After three straight runs, Coffeyville took a timeout on 4th down with 19 seconds left. The kicker trotted onto the field for a short field goal. That kick was missed.

Hutchinson had one final chance. Hutchinson made it to the Coffeyville 23-yard line after a completion from Laible to Malik Benson. Benson was tackled inbounds and time expired. Benson finished with 113 receiving yards.

FINAL: Coffeyville 17 Hutchinson 10

Hutchinson's defense kept the Blue Dragons in the game. Coffeyville was held to 4 of 18 on 4th down. The Red Ravens fumbled the ball three times and lost two. Davion Westmoreland led the way with nine tackles.

The Red Ravens held the Blue Dragon offense to 3 points. Reise Collier had 12 tackles and Jhalyn Shuler had 11.

Hutchinson (0-1) will face Butler (0-1) in Gowans Stadium next Saturday.

Turnovers doom No. 1 Dragons

Jaymie Lynn O’Dell, 69, of McPherson, KS, unexpectedly passed away to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at McPherson Hospital. She was a dōTERRA Wellness Consultant and owned Lavish Essential Oils, LLC. She was also an interior designer.

Jaymie was born on December 19, 1951, in Pueblo, CO, the daughter of Chester Arthur and Rose Amelia (Moore) Schmidt. She graduated from Aldine High School in Houston, TX and later from McPherson College in 1999 with an Interior Design degree. On December 19, 1970, she was united in marriage to David A. O’Dell at the Church of God in McPherson. This union was blessed with two daughters, Crystal and Rozalynn.

She was a member of Countryside Covenant Church where she was active in Bible study and small groups. She was a volunteer for Oak Harbor Cottages and a member of McPherson Master Gardeners Club and former member of Sweet Adelines. She was also involved with the Apples of Gold Ministry and was a Kansas City BBQ Master Judge.

Survivors include: her loving husband of 50 years, David of the home; two daughters, Crystal Clobes of Hutchinson, KS and Rozalynn Frey (Ken) of Hesston, KS; six grandchildren, Acacia Clobes, Adelaide Clobes, Lilly Smith, Cooper Frey, Carter Frey, and Caris Frey; four siblings, Amelia Patrie (Chuck) of West Lafayette, IN, Richard Schmidt (Denise) of Spring Branch, TX, Calvin Schmidt of Hockley, TX, and Drew Schmidt (Glenda) of Montgomery, TX; a brother-in-law, Danny O’Dell of McPherson, KS; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, September 10, 2021, at Countryside Covenant Church. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 AM, Saturday, September 11, at McPherson Cemetery with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 10:30 AM at Countryside Covenant Church with Rev. Jon Black officiating.

R. Faye Steffen, 79, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away September 2, 2021 at Legend of Hutchinson, Kansas. 

She was born June 28, 1942 at home in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, the daughter of Willard A. Wilson and Ruby E. Blau. Faye was a 1960 graduate of Pawnee Rock High School. She graduated from Fort Hays State College with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics in 1964 and a Master’s in Mathematics in 1965. Faye taught at Pawnee Rock High School and later was a teller at Farmer State Bank, Sterling. On August 16, 1964, she married Thomas M. Steffen in Great Bend, Kansas. The couple have two daughters, Lynette (Brian Day), and grandchildren, Sydney and Carson all of Shawnee, KS; and daughter, Tonya (Tim Benning), and grandchildren, Lucas, Craig, Evan, Lauren, Logan, and Drue all of Wichita, KS; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sharol Livengood; and brother, Lynn Wilson. 

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M., Monday, September 6, 2021, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.

Hutchinson Community College freshman Collin Oswalt jumped right into the jungle known as Jayhawk Conference cross country on Friday and didn’t back down.

Oswalt, a Hutchinson Central Christian product, had a tremendous Blue Dragon debut with a fourth-place finish at the season-opening Terry Masterson Twilight Classic at Fun Valley.

Oswalt dueled with Cloud County’s Awet Beraki and Fort Scott’s Gudisa Andow, two of the top KJCCC runners from last season, and Garden City freshman Dennis Mutai.

Oswalt stayed with that lead pack most of the first three laps of the four-lap, 4-mile men’s race. That group started to separate during the final mile. The Blue Dragon freshman finished fourth overall with a time of 20:38.2. That time was the 15th best time in Masterson Twilight history.

Garden City’s Mutai won the race in 19:47.7, which was 17.8 seconds ahead of Beraki (20:06.5). Adnow was third in 20:26.7.

The Blue Dragons weren’t able to post a team score on Friday with only four runners able to compete.

Sophomore Andrew Holt the second Blue Dragon to finish. He placed 34th with a time of 22:37.5. Holt cut 9 full seconds off his freshman Masterson Twilight time.

Freshman Carsyn Turpin placed 39th in his Blue Dragon debut with a time of 22:55.4.

Sophomore Aaron Geissinger was 47th overall in a time of 23:08.1. Geissinger improved 29 full seconds from his freshman Masterson Twilight time.

Cloud County repeated as Masterson Twilight team champion with 65 points and three runners finishing in the Top 10. Cowley College was second with 102 points and Washburn was third with 118 points.

The race time was moved up 3 hours became of the potential of heavy rain on Friday night.

The Blue Dragons will run their first 8,000-meter race of the season on September 18 at the Bethel Rogers-Muthama Classic in North Newton, KS.

Oswalt makes strong Dragon debut

All-American Louise Cocking earned her fifth Top-5 finish to lead the Hutchinson Community College Women’s Cross Country Team at the season-opening Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday at Fun Valley.

The 2021 opener was a tough one for the Blue Dragons as a team. The Blue Dragons finished eighth of the 13 teams that posted a team score on Friday.

Cocking was the only Hutchinson runner in the Top 25. The rest of the team finished between 55th and 70th overall.

The 2021 edition of the Masterson Twilight wasn’t exactly run under the lights. The start of the race was moved up three hours to avoid potential heavy rains for later in the evening. While the race temperature was in the mid-80s and under cloud cover, the runners battled extremely high humidity.

Cocking was the race leader well into the second of three 1-mile laps around Fun Valley. She was in a lead pack of four runners throughout the race.

During the final lap, Washburn’s Patricia Koma took charge and won the race with the 12th-fastest time in Masterson Twilight history of 18:54.4. Kansas Wesleyan’s Stephanie Martinez was second in 19:05.4.

Cowley’s Karissa Glover edged Cocking for third by 0.7 seconds. Cocking ran a time of 19:07.7, a second slower than her freshman time last season.

Sophomore Noelle Hidalgo was the next Blue Dragon to finish. She was 55th in a time of 21:50.7.

Freshman Anastasia Meyer placed 62nd with a time of 22:20.8.

Freshman Michele Gage 22:32.1 to place 66th. Freshman Sydney Grauer was 69th in a time of 22:44.3. Freshman Aidyn White placed 70th in a time of 22:46.4.

Cocking fourth to lead Hutchinson women at Masterson Twilight

McCOOK, Nebraska – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned a pair of victory over two Region IX teams on Friday in to open the McCook Community College Tournament at the Graff Events Center.

The Blue Dragons rolled by Otero Junior College in a sweep, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 in the first match on Friday. The Blue Dragons rallied after dropping the first set against North Platte and had to defeat the Knights in five sets, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 13-25, 15-10.

Hutchinson improves to 4-0 overall. The Blue Dragons will play tournament host McCook at 9 a.m. on Saturday and NJCAA No. 1-ranked Iowa Western at 1 p.m.

Melina Christadoulou recorded a season high for kills, Kristina Head had a season-high for total blocks and McKinley Johnson served a season high number of aces in a sweep of Otero in the opening match of the tournament.

Christadoulou hammered home 13 kills to lead the Blue Dragons. Head had nine total blocks. Johnson decimated the Otero serve receive with nine aces.

The Blue Dragons racked up 40 total kills and had 14 total blocks and 10 total service aces.

Head and Blondie Penaflor had nine kills each. Penaflor and Morgan Harvey had four blocks each.

Libero Shelby Reeder led the Blue Dragon back line with 12 digs. Harvey had eight digs and Zoe Schmidt had seven digs.

The Blue Dragons moved to 2-0 in five-set matches winning their second five-setter in three days. They did so after dropping the first set of a match for the first time in 2021.

After dropping the first set, the Blue Dragons won the next two sets only to be dominated by the Knights in the fourth set.

Head led the Blue Dragons with 12 kills and five total blocks. Freshman Aubreigh Haxton was a spark with 11 kills and two blocks. Freshman Baylee Miller also saw her first extended action of the season with seven kills and two service aces.

The Blue Dragons utilized a 6-2 offense against North Platte. Amanda Velez had 18 assists and Johnson finished with 16 assists. Reeder had 21 digs to pace the Dragons defensively. Tauja Durham chipped in four total blocks, including one solo stuff.

Norton resident Wilmer E. Severns passed away Tuesday, August 31, 
2021, at the Hutchinson Health and Rehab in Hutchinson, KS at the age of 
96.

Wilmer was born November 15, 1924, on a farm in Norton County, Kansas 
the son of Ross E. and Irma H. (Colip) Severns.&nbsp; He served in the United
 States Army during WWII.&nbsp; Upon returning he received his bachelor’s 
degree from the Manhattan Christian College and began his Christian 
Ministry, preaching until the age of 93.

He was united in marriage to Eileen Juan Fisher on May 30, 1948, in Norton, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on January 15, 2015.

Survivors include his daughter Wava Goetz of Great Falls, Montana; 
two sons Wayne Severns of Auburndale, Florida and Jerry Severns of 
Hutchinson, Kansas; a brother Virgil Severns of Fairbanks, Alaska; a 
sister Margaret Leonard of Topeka, Kansas; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Norton Christian Church in 
Norton, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021 with Pastor 
Nate Hagen officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors will follow in the 
Norton Cemetery, Norton.

Over the last several seasons, the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team has received most of the preseason chatter heading into a new season.

As the 2021 season begins on Friday with the annual Terry Masterson Twilight Classic at Fun Valley, the Blue Dragon women have high hopes for a strong season.

“We are a really close team,” returning first-team All-American Louise Cocking said. “We set team goals and we want a regional title and a Top 3 at nationals. I think we can do it.”

“The sophomores will be steady for us,” added seventh-year head coach Justin Riggs. “We will look to see what freshmen will come out of the woodwork and step up for us.”

Cocking, along with fellow sophomores Noelle Hidalgo, Izzy Wheeler and Jurney Yung return from last year’s team that finished seventh in the NJCAA National Championships last November. Riggs adds four in-state freshmen to create depth the Blue Dragon women’s team hasn’t had recently.

Cocking (Derbyshire, UK) finished fifth in the 2020 NJCAA Championships to become the Blue Dragons first first-team NJCAA All-American since Elissa Peterman in 1999. She ran a career-best 5K time of 19:05.94 at nationals, which is the third-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragon women are as healthy as they have been since early last season. Cocking battled through injuries all throughout the spring track season. Injuries slowed down Wheeler after a strong start.

Hidalgo (Hooker, OK) showed steady improvement throughout her freshman season. She ran a season’s best 5K cross country time of 21:04.11 in a 45th-place finish at nationals. Hidalgo knocked about a minute off that 5K time in the spring track season.

Wheeler (Belleville, KS) ran a best 5K time of 20:22.8 at the Rogers/Muthama Classic last season in Hutch’s first 5K race. Yung (Andale) also rank her season-low time of 21:51.4 at nationals.

“We don’t have that 1-2 this year after we lost Sheila (Too),” Riggs said. “We do have a lot better depth and I’m excited about that.”

Riggs has been very happy with freshmen Anastasia Meyer (Andale), Aidyn White (Buhler), Sydney Grauer (Marysville) and Michele Gage (Andale) through the preseason workouts.

“The freshmen have all ran pretty close to each other so far,” Riggs said. “Anastasia’s been strong as far and Aidyn was our No. 2 finisher at our time trial. I’m excited about the freshmen. They are getting adjusted to the training. It will be interesting to see how they develop.”

The 2021 Blue Dragon men will have a much different look with only five runners on the roster this season.

Sophomores Andrew Holt (Lago Vista, Texas) and Aaron Geissinger (Abilene) are the only returning runners from last season’s fifth-place NJCAA Championship team.

Riggs adds freshmen Camilo Leos-Tarun (Winfield), Collin Oswalt (Hutchinson Central Christian) and Carsyn Turpin (Shawnee/Mill Valley).

“This is going to be a turnover year,” Riggs said. “We are small on numbers, but I know I can count on all five of those runners. As long as we stay healthy and stay committed to what we are going, we will have a respectable season.”

Holt finished 37th at the 2020 NJCAA Championships with a time of 27:14.08. His best 8K time was 27:05.44 in a ninth-place showing at the Red Devil Relays.

Geissinger was 80th at nationals last season in a time of 28:34.40. His low 8K time was 28:25.70 at the Region VI Championship.

The 2021 Terry Masterson Twilight Classic will have the largest field in the six-year history of the event with 22 men’s teams and 21 women’s teams in the field.

The field includes 11 Jayhawk Conference teams, 12 overall junior college teams, eight NAIA teams and NCAA Division II teams Washburn University and Newman University.

The women’s race will begin at 5:45 p.m. and the men’s race is scheduled for 6:20 p.m. Because of the rain, the video stream is canceled.

Hutchinson’s Andrew Kibet is the Masterson Twilight men’s course record holder. Kibet won the 2018 Masterson with a time of 19:32.70. Barton’s Mirena Goncalves set the women’s record in 2017 of 18:07.31.

Cloud County is the defending women’s champion. Allen’s men won the 2020 Masterson title, but the Red Devils are not in the 2021 field.

Dragons open season Friday with Terry Masterson Twilight Classic

Seemingly in control through the first two sets, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team had a hard time finishing off the Cloud County Thunderbirds in the 2021 Jayhawk West opener on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Cloud County dominated the third and fourth sets to even the match. Tied an 8-all in the fifth, the Blue Dragons scored on 7 of the final 10 rallies to defeat the Thunderbirds 25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 15-25, 15-11.

The Blue Dragons improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. Cloud County is now 6-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. Hutchinson will play four matches this weekend in the McCook Tournament in McCook, Nebraska.

Sophomore middle Kristina Head had a career-high 17 kills on .238 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons, who hit .253 in the three sets they won and .106 in the two sets they lost. Head had four kills in the decisive fifth set.

Freshman Blondie Penaflor was the only other Blue Dragon in double figure kills with 13 on .250 hitting. Freshman Chloe Conway had eight kills.

The Blue Dragons served tough with 13 services aces and only seven service errors. Head just missed her career high for aces with five in the match. Sophomore libero Shelby Reeder had three aces. Five different Hutchinson players recorded aces.

Freshman setter McKinley Johnson, running a 5-1 system with the injury to fellow freshman starter Andrea Serrano, posted a season-high 49 assists with seven digs and two kills.

Reeder finished with a team-high 15 digs to lead the Blue Dragons. Zoe Schmidt had 11 digs and Morgan Harvey had 10, including a key diving dig late in the fifth set.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Cloud County .155-.153, but were out-blocked 7.0-5.5. Cloud County had a 68-67 dig advantage, but the Dragons had 13 aces to Cloud County’s eight.

Holly Stewart had 13 kills and Natasha Dooley had 10 kills to lead Cloud County.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons had five service aces and out-hit Cloud County .184-.111 in the opening set. Still the Thunderbirds led 6-3 before the Dragons finally shook off the rust of a nine-day hiatus since their last match. Back-to-back Head services aces gave the Dragons a 10-9 lead. A Conway kill upped the lead to 14-10. Leading 17-13, the Blue Dragons reeled off six-straight points. Kills from Penaflor, Head and Tauja Durham, a Harvey ace and two Cloud attack errors boosted the Dragon lead to 23-13. Cloud scored four of the next five points, but Head closed out the set with a kill. Head had five kills in the opening set.

 SET 2: The second set had long scoring runs by each team. The Dragons opened the set with a 7-1 run, only to see the Thunderbirds counter with a 5-1 run to pull within 8-6. Hutchinson answered back with five straight, getting a Penaflor kill for a 13-6 lead. A Penaflor kill, Harvey ace and T-Bird attack error pushed the Dragon cushion to 10 at 18-8. Cloud had two three-point runs after that, but the Dragons ended a decisive second set with a Sophie Connor kill. The Dragons hit .219 and held Cloud County to .000 hitting on 32 attacks.

Cloud scored two straight to pull within 12-11, but the Dragons finished off the match with kills from Conway and Penaflor and Cloud was called for a ball-handling error on match point. The Blue Dragons out-hit Cloud County .400-.174 in the final set.

Dragons survive in 5 against Cloud

GREAT BEND – The Barton Cougars converted a direct free kick from about 30 yards out with a little less than 20 minutes remaining in the second half and spoiled the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team’s Jayhawk West debut on Wednesday.

Barton defeated the Blue Dragons 2-1 on a hot, blustery day at the Cougar Soccer Complex. This was Hutchinson’s first action in 12 days and Barton’s first game in 11 days.

The Blue Dragons fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk West. Barton improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. Hutchinson will play host to Johnson County at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the 2021 home opener at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons had a hard time getting its offense going against the Cougars. At one point in the first half, the Dragons were being out-shot 7-0.  Barton ultimately out-shot the Blue Dragons 16-5 and Hutchinson produced only one corner kick.

Freshman forward Hadlie Lowe scored the Blue Dragons’ only goal on a great individual effort late in the first half.

Defender Dayza Hollimon played a long pass down the middle that was initially too long for Lowe on the Barton Complex artificial turf. Lowe continued to sprint downfield and stole the ball away from a Barton defender. Lowe then battled with Barton keeper Nia Baker for possession. After deflecting the ball away from Baker, Lowe made a 360-degree spin to the ball and rolled a shot into the unprotected net to tie the game at 1-1 with 7:23 remaining in the first half.

The goal was Lowe’s second of the season.

Going against a strong south wind in the second half, the Blue Dragons good possession in the early minutes the produced their only corner kick of the game. Lexi Jack’s long direct free kick from about 35 yards out with 20:12 to play in the second half was Hutchinson’s only shot attempt of the second half.

Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona had six saves in the game, but yielded her first two goals of the season. Felix-Cardona made four spectacular saves on point-blank Barton shots.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead with 16:31 to play in the first half on an unassisted goal by Annika Gerdau, her sixth goal of the season.

Barton scored the eventual game winner with 28:50 remaining in the second half. After a Blue Dragon foul in their defensive end gave the Cougars a direct free kick straight out from 30 yards, Cougar Seulgi Lee drilled a line drive just under the cross bar for the go-ahead goal.

Baker was credited with one save for the Cougars.

The NJCAA named Felix-Cardona its National Goalkeeper of the Week on Wednesday. The NJCAA combines Weeks 1 and 2 before naming its first national weekly honorees each season.

Felix-Cardona shut out Western Wyoming in a 1-0 season-opening win for the Blue Dragons on August 20 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. The freshman from Wichita posted six saves in that victory.
