HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The public hearing on the closure of Hutchinson USD 308's Education Service Center building at 700 East 13th Avenue will be held on Monday evening at 5:45 p.m. immediately prior to the regular Board of Education meeting.&nbsp;

The purpose of closing that building is to allow it to be torn down and for the Hutchinson YMCA to build on that land in an effort to stay as close to their original location as possible.

This closure would result in a shuffling of resources within the district's buildings, but a lot of that may be happening anyway if the facilities changes being proposed to the community in public meetings in April go forward.

The regular Board of Education meeting will start at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be at the Administration Center, 1520 N. Plum.

Hearing on closure of USD 308 building set for Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dr. John Walker with Central Christian School in Hutchinson said that they are planning to expand their childcare offerings.

"We are looking to remodel some existing space and build an addition to double our capacity as a center," Walker said. "Right now, we can take one year old through school age. With our new center, we'll be able to take six weeks old through school age. Right now, we have slots for about 50 kids and with the remodel of the existing space and addition, we'll be able to take nearly 100 kids."

Quite a bit of the money for the expansion has come in already.

"We need to raise $2.1 million," Walker said. "To date, we have about $1.5 million given or committed. We've got a gap of about $600,000 that we are fundraising for at the current moment. Certainly, anybody that's interested in helping support this mission, support this goal to double our capacity and serve students from a Biblical worldview and teach them can certainly contact me directly. I would be happy to share more information with them."

The plan is to get started on construction soon.

"We plan to break ground late summer," Walker said. "We are moving forward with the project. The school purchased the old fire station that's on our property back in 2012, I believe. The current plan right now is to leverage that existing space that we have, that old fire station, that we've been using at the school for many years. We would be remodeling that fire station into an activity area, an office space, and then building six new classrooms to the east of that facility to facilitate the childcare needs."

Central Christian School looking for childcare expansion funds

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said that his manufacturing survey for March was just below growth neutral and that appears to be consistent with how he sees the economy generally.

"It's an economy that's limping along, I'll say, in the national economy, the regional economy and for that matter, most of the state economies," Goss said. "We have higher inflationary pressures. That came out in the national survey and in our survey. The Federal Reserve is just not going to be able to reduce interest rates like investors think. The stock market, at least the equity market, is sort of getting way ahead of the Federal Reserve and way ahead of the economy."

There are jobs out there, if people want them.

"When we talk about the openings, job openings to each unemployed worker, that's still remaining fairly good," Goss said. "Kansas, you've got two job openings for every unemployed worker. It's lower than it was a couple of years ago, but it's still not bad."

Nonetheless, respondents to the manufacturing survey are not optimistic about the rest of the year.

"Sixty-eight percent said we're either in a recession right now or going to be in a recession in 2024," Goss said. "Nationally, the labor department's reporting jobs, we get really excited about the number of jobs, but a lot of them are part-time jobs. A lot of them are dual job holders."

The US economy added 303,000 jobs last month, according to data released Friday by the Labor Department.&nbsp;

Goss: Economy 'limping along'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council and the Board of Reno County Commissioners will hold a joint meeting Wednesday at noon in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

Topics to be discussed include&nbsp;a housing assessment, neighborhood revitalization programs and economic development incentives and policy.

As this is a study session, no formal action will be taken at the meeting.

NEWTON, Kan. — A Newton man was arrested overnight after a vehicle pursuit through Newton and into Sedgwick County. 

Late Friday, Newton Police and Harvey County Sheriff’s Office were actively looking for a person wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Felony warrants were issued for the person through Harvey County District Court.

While watching a location the suspect was known to frequent, a Harvey County Sheriff’s Investigator saw a vehicle known to be driven by the suspect leave the location at a high speed. The vehicle was located a short time later, and the suspect refused to stop.

The pursuit traveled from west Newton to east Newton and southbound on I-135. The pursuit made its way to South Kansas Avenue and into Sedgwick County. In Park City, the pursuit went back to I-135 and northbound. Near the 101st Street exit, the suspect vehicle reportedly ran out of gas. The driver, the wanted person from the aggravated assault, was taken into custody. 

Bryan Edward Smith, 34, of Newton, was arrested on the warrant for aggravated assault, felony flee &amp; elude, and a multitude of other traffic and drug offenses. His bond was set at $71,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Smith has over a dozen previous convictions that include theft, aggravated assault, burglary, aggravated robbery, arson, flee or attempt to elude, criminal threat and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections

Under the terms of the grants, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must be:

4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and

5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

United Way of Reno County offering food and shelter grants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The&nbsp; Board of County Commissioners will be asked on Wednesday to approve a change to the fire response in the county, putting the land that was annexed into the City of Hutchinson identified as the K-96 Kimball Industrial Park formally into the city's fire jurisdiction and out of Rural Fire District 8.

The land is adjacent to K-96 across the highway from Crupper's Corner. The purpose of the annexation this past December was to be able to offer this property as a potential place for industry along K-96.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are reporting a new Fentanyl trend in Kansas.

According to a social media report from the Harvey County Sheriff, "we most typically find Fentanyl in Dirty 30s in our area - usually round, pale blue counterfeit Oxycodone pills that contain Fentanyl. More recently, we've had two cases where we've discovered pink-tinted Fentanyl powder."

"Often, Fentanyl is consumed by someone using foil to smoke the pill or powder. When it is smoked, there's a black, burnt residue left on the foil. If someone is having a medical emergency, or to report a crime, call 911.

"If you have information that could assist in an investigation and would like to talk with us, please call us at the Sheriff's Office at 316-284-6960 and ask to speak to a drug investigator.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The New Beginnings Bisonte Food Service Communal Meal Program attracted the attention of Kansas U.S. Senator, Dr. Roger Marshall. Marshall visited the kitchen where the program is held on Tuesday afternoon.&nbsp;

"I’m excited about the food is health program," Marshall said. "That's really one of my big priorities. People say how are you going to save Medicare? How are you going to save Medicaid? Well it all starts with food is health. Food is medicine. So I really wanted to learn about the nutrition component of this. That really perked my interest so I think part of my job is learning what's working and try to accentuate the positive."

The communal meal program at New Beginnings provides balanced meals and nutrition education to those who are in recovery for substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions. According to Reno County Communications Specialist Sandra Milburn,&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4109c0f7-a950-4291-9e3d-fa6323e12d39">It is made up of and managed by people who have substance abuse disorders or are in recovery and are either graduates of New Beginnings Transitional Jobs Program or are members of Oxford House Chapter 13.</a>

Marshall listened to Isaac Dimitt, executive chef and kitchen supervisor, present the program's main focus and the types of foods that are incorporated for nutrition recovery. Dimitt said the brighter a plate of food is, the better.&nbsp;

&nbsp; "All of this is to help bring those nutritions back into the body," Dimitt said. "For every deficiency that they have, that's what I'm trying to rebuild and show these guys you can eat healthy and this is part of the recovery that you have."&nbsp; &nbsp;

Marshall said as a physician, he knows firsthand how lack of nutrition can affect the body's organs. He said someone who is struggling with substance abuse usually has poor liver function which hinders one's ability to digest fatty foods.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"When people came in and were detoxing in ER, when their weren't places like this, we would hang an IV and then we would put vitamin B6 in it," Marshall said. "It's the first thing that we would do, so hopefully we are not always having to do that with an IV and you know there are good ways to do it. I think a lot of it is, you know, teaching people good healthy eating habits."

Dimitt said the program has a personal connection to him. Dimitt has been sober for 14 years and wants to give back to those in recovery.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"As you listen to that story, the community is solving the problem itself," Marshall said. "Yes, they are accessing some federal grants but its just amazing all the different pieces of the community are solving the problem. When I talk about my Kansas values, I talk about faith and family and education but community is one of my values. That communities can solve problems better than the federal government can. Yes, there is a farm bill and 85% of the farm bill is for nutritious programs, and I want to keep supporting them, but mostly I want to help programs like this succeed and then get out of the way."&nbsp;

Also, according to Milburn, the Bisonte food service program provides dietary meals for the detox and residential treatment unit of Substance Abuse Center of Kansas and Horizons Mental Health Center's Crisis Unit.&nbsp;

Marshall visits Bisonte Food Program

RENO COUNTY — According to Reno County Public Works, Broadacres Road from West Blanchard Avenue north 400 feet to West Blanchard Road will be closed starting Monday, April 8 at 8 a.m. for railroad crossing repairs.

The hope is to reopen the road at some point on April 10.

Broadacres Road to be closed starting Monday

RENO COUNTY — Here is the latest update for new or ongoing ramp closures at the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction in Reno County:

The ramp connecting southbound K-14 to westbound U.S. 50 remains on schedule to open about 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6. However, the ramp is expected to be closed again Monday, April 8, and to reopen about 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 9.

The ramp connecting eastbound U.S. 50 to northbound K-14 is expected to close Monday, April 8, and to reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday, April 11.

During the closures, motorists should seek other routes.

The ramp closures are part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

During the work, ramp closures will occur at times. K-14 traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers or a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

Iowa Civil Contracting Inc., of Victor, Iowa, is the primary contractor for the $3,559,085 project.

Ramp closure schedule for K-14 and U.S. 50 updated

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of Trustees of Hutchinson Community College has named three finalists for the College president’s position as they search for a replacement for retiring President Carter File.

The finalists are Dr. Joel Michaelis, Mr. Greg Nichols and Dr. Tricia Paramore. The finalists were selected from a pool of more than 40 applicants that was narrowed to a semi-finalist group by the Board’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee.

“Selecting the next president is one of the Board's most important responsibilities, and reaching this significant step was only possible thanks to the commitment and hard work of members of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee who have shared their perspectives so far”, said Board Chair Terry Bisbee.

Starting Friday, April 5, finalists will visit the Hutchinson campus to meet with students, faculty, staff and the public in a series of open forums. Visit details are available on the Presidential Search website.

“Now is the time for the community to meet these finalists and provide feedback to the Board of Trustees,” Bisbee continued. “We hope students, faculty, staff and community members take the opportunity to engage with the finalists at these upcoming forums.”

Dr. Paramore was born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, and graduated from Hutchinson High School. She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Cellular Biology and Genetics and a Master’s degree in Molecular Genetics from the University of Kansas, and completed the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Educational Studies, with specialization in Educational Leadership and Higher Education.

Paramore started her career as a biology instructor at community colleges in Kansas and Texas. For the last 28 years, she has served Hutchinson Community College as professor, department chair, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Her experience extends to faculty development, higher education accreditation, and leadership of strategic planning processes. Dr. Paramore is married to Lonnie, her husband of 27 years, and they have two adult children, Payton and Faith.

Greg Nichols is President and CEO of Salina Area Technical College. As a lifelong learner, he earned a BBA from the University of Oklahoma, MS from Emporia State University, completed coursework for a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership and is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration. He holds a post-graduate certificate in District Level Leadership and Superintendent License.

Nichols began his career as a math teacher in Ness City then moved to El Dorado to continue his teaching career. He began teaching in higher education at Butler Community College as an adjunct instructor, then he accepted a position at Cowley College as a math instructor earning the 2010 Outstanding Teacher Award and later promoted to Associate Dean of Instruction. Prior to coming to Salina, he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Colby Community College. While there, he helped to move Colby Community College from probation status to fully accredited with the Higher Learning Commission - HLC. He also helped Colby CC grow their online college 400 percent in three years.

Joel Michaelis, Ed.D., serves as the Vice President of Instruction at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Previously, Dr. Michaelis also served in the Chief Academic Officer role at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Middlesboro, Kentucky and also at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. Dr. Michaelis earned a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from Baylor University, a Master of Education in Higher Education administration from The University of Texas, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Texas A&amp;M University.

Dr. Michaelis has worked in education for over 30 years, starting as a 6th grade mathematics instructor and has served in various administrative roles in student services, workforce development and academics in community colleges in Texas, Kentucky, and Nebraska. He is also a graduate of Paris High School and attended Paris Junior College for a year prior to transferring to Texas A&amp;M.

She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Cellular Biology and Genetics and a Master’s degree in Molecular Genetics from the University of Kansas, and completed the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Educational Studies, with specialization in Educational Leadership and Higher Education.Paramore started her career as a biology instructor at community colleges in Kansas and Texas. For the last 28 years, she has served Hutchinson Community College as professor, department chair, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Youth Leadership Program Coordinator Carissa Paxton is leaving Rise Up Reno, but they intend to fill her position. 

According to a Wednesday social media post, they are looking for&nbsp;a candidate with a Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Rise Up Reno Youth Program Coordinator will work directly with teens to prepare them for a drug-free life. The teens will work with younger students to mentor positive behavior, stress management and leadership. The work also includes strategic planning, data collection and reporting.
