TOPEKA, Kan. — The winners of last weekend’s Kansas KidWind State Finals are now gearing up for their next challenge – the World KidWind Challenge scheduled for May 5-8, 2024 in Minneapolis, MN.  To qualify for the world competition, teams first had to capture one of the top two spots in their age division during regional competitions, then win one of the top three spots in their age group at the State Finals.

The winning teams representing Kansas are:

1st&nbsp;place – Hutch STEM Blue - Allen STEM Magnet School - USD 308 Coaches: Keith Gable and Tara Urban Team Members: Samarah Bushue, Audden Guillen, Gatlin Loepp, and Dalton Urban

To prepare for competition in the KidWind Challenge, team members work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using the materials of their choice. At each level of competition (regional, state and national), turbines are put to the test in a 48" × 48" wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.5-5 m/s (meters per second). Scoring is based on turbine performance and efficiency, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge, and a presentation to judges where the team explains its design process.

KidWind is an Energy Education Event from the Kansas Corporation Commission and K-State Engineering Extension made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal is to help students learn key concepts around science, technology, engineering, and math in fun and engaging ways. The KidWind program actively engages students. It teaches not only STEM skills, but also promotes teamwork, problem solving and public speaking.

Hutch STEM Blue wins at state

MCPHERSON, Kan. — One-of-a-kind classic automobiles will be displayed during the 24th Annual C.A.R.S. Club Motoring Festival at McPherson College on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the hundreds of remarkable cars, "The Path to Pebble" documentary will be shown throughout the day.

This year, a few unique cars are expected on the field, including a 1912 Simplex and a 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C with a fascinating history. The car was owned by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, given to his mistress, and used in an attempted escape in 1945. Other cars include those from the General Motors collection —the 1968 Chevrolet Astro II, the 1972 Silver Arrow III, and the 2025 Cadillac Celestiq Concept.

Each year, the student-run car show attracts rare vehicles from across the country. This year, it expects 350 to 400 vehicles to be displayed throughout the campus grounds. Alongside the rare classic cars, automotive restoration students also present vehicles they are restoring.

"The car show serves as one of the biggest networking and alumni-gathering events for the college," said Joseph Cyr, car show chair. "Every year, hundreds of cars ranging from student projects and local show winners to Pebble Beach best-of-show contenders, converge on the college lawn for a unique day celebrating McPherson's heritage as a leader in the antique automobile industry."

The event will feature "The Path to Pebble," a film that chronicles the incredible story of McPherson College's decade-long journey to compete at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with a vehicle restored by students. The 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet secured a second-in-class win at the prestigious Concours in August 2023. The documentary has not been widely released yet, and this will be one of the few times to see it. It will be shown in Brown Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission to the car show and documentary is free.

In addition to the wide variety of classic automobiles, the event will feature entertainment provided by the McPherson College Jazz Band and the McPherson High School Jazz Band. The awards presentation will begin at approximately 2 p.m. Building tours of Templeton Hall, home of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration Program, will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary trolley service will be available between campus and Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Food trucks will also be available on campus to purchase food and beverages.

Car enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in a Cruise-in on Friday, May 3, on Main Street in McPherson beginning at 6 p.m. No registration or entry fee is required for this event, which serves as a sneak peek at what will be on the show field and an opportunity for any car or motorcycle owner to display their rides in an informal show.

Pre-registration for the May 4 event is available online at a discounted rate until April 20. 

Registration can also be made on the day of the show; however, only vehicles pre-registered are entered for judging. Student-run car show attracts unique vehicles

COTTONWOOD FALLS, Kan. — Symphony in the Flint Hills is excited to announce the grand opening reception of its annual Prairie Art Exhibit and Auction on Saturday, April 27, from 1-3 p.m. The event, held at the Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery located at 331 Broadway in Cottonwood Falls, KS, celebrates the beauty and spirit of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie while providing vital support for talented local artists.

Every year, this juried exhibit brings together a stunning collection of artwork inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of the Flint Hills. With a mission to "heighten appreciation and knowledge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie," Symphony in the Flint Hills continues its dedication to preserving and celebrating this unique ecosystem.

Red Rock Road has reopened

McPherson County Community Foundation

INMAN, Kan. — The McPherson County Community Foundation this week recognized three Inman HS alumni as 2024 recipients of the Agatha Smyers Scholarship for the Service Professions: Peter Buller (Bethel College), Ashtyn Schroeder (Kansas State University), and Taylor Thiessen (Kansas State University). Each student will be receiving a $750 scholarship to continue their education next fall. 

Graduates of Inman High School who have completed 5 semesters in college and are working toward a degree in the service industry, which could include: educators, clergy, social services, registered nursing, physical therapists, physicians, or dentists are encouraged to apply for the Agatha Smyers Scholarship awarded in the spring of each year.

Peter Buller will be a senior at Bethel College in the fall, studying Bible &amp; Religion with minors in Music and Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies. He plans to complete his degree at Bethel, spend some time doing voluntary service, and then attend Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. His career plans are to work towards ordination as a pastor in the Mennonite church and work in church leadership.

Ashtyn Schroeder has recently been accepted into the Hutchinson Community College Associates of Nursing program. Until the start of the program, she is currently gaining patient experience while working at both the Hutchinson Clinic in OBGYN, as well as the Hutchinson Hospital as a Patient Care Tech. Her plan is to successfully complete the program and become an RN. The field she hopes to work in is Labor and Delivery. Following this, Ashtyn plans to further her education by completing a BSN program as well as a Nurse practitioner program!

Taylor Thiessen is currently a sophomore at Kansas State University majoring in Kinesiology. Taylor enjoys her classes at KSU while learning about the body and how she can help people become more physically active in the future. After completing her bachelor’s degree at K-State, Taylor plans on furthering her education in Physical Therapy where she will complete her doctorate. For Taylor’s future career, she plans on managing and owning her own outpatient clinic in a rural area.

 </figure>McPherson County Community FoundationINMAN, Kan. — The McPherson County Community Foundation this week recognized three Inman HS alumni as 2024 recipients of the Agatha Smyers Scholarship for the Service Professions: Peter Buller (Bethel College), Ashtyn Schroeder (Kansas State University), and Taylor Thiessen (Kansas State University). Each student will be receiving a $750 scholarship to continue their education next fall. Graduates of Inman High School who have completed 5 semesters in college and are working toward a degree in the service industry, which could include: educators, clergy, social services, registered nursing, physical therapists, physicians, or dentists are encouraged to apply for the Agatha Smyers Scholarship awarded in the spring of each year.<figure>

Her plan is to successfully complete the program and become an RN. The field she hopes to work in is Labor and Delivery. Following this, Ashtyn plans to further her education by completing a BSN program as well as a Nurse practitioner program!<figure>

Agatha Smyers Scholarship for the Service Professions recipients announced

LITTLE RIVER, Kan.  — The donkey ball fundraiser for the Little River Learning Center is back April 27.

There will be a baked potato bar from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Little River High School commons, with the donkey ball game at 7:00 p.m. in the gym.

Tickets are $8 in advance at the learning center, or People's Bank and Trust in Little River, or either the USD 444 office in Little River or the office at Windom school.

If you wait until that night to get tickets, they are $10 at the door.

Concessions will also be available. All proceeds will benefit the center.

Fundraiser for Little River Learning Center April 27

There was a line in one of those corny comedy/action-adventure movies that made me roll my eyes recently. A character asked, “What’s in Kansas?” in reference to them being unable to understand why a mutual friend moved to Kansas. That’s not the line that made me roll my eyes. I am a transplant myself and know from experience that Kansas doesn’t seem to be very exciting until you get to know what makes it such a wonderful place to live.

The line I am still thinking about was the response, “she married a rich rancher.” The insinuation that the only thing making Kansas attractive to a highly affluent, college educated woman is lots of money, makes me little concerned about how many people think all ranchers and farmers are rich.

Since Tax Day is this week, I thought it would be appropriate to dive into how much money farmers make and why people have so many misconceptions about the topic.

In my opinion, there are several culprits creating mystery around farm income levels. The first is non-farm people. I find it humorous to watch an outsider ask a farmer how many acres or cows they have. Some farmers see that as asking point-blank, “What’s your salary?” The poor outsider is probably just trying to show interest and wouldn’t have a clue if 500 or 5,000 acres was normal, let alone have any insight on the value of a cow.

Farmers also contribute to the problem. Growing up, my parents had off-farm jobs, so I never really thought about if our dairy made money. In college, I meet farm kids who somewhat proudly talked about getting Pell grants because their parents had a low income or at least had a low taxable income. I never liked that attitude and was glad to meet other farmers who were content to pay taxes because that meant their business was successful and they were being productive members of society.

Legislators and estate taxes are also part of the misunderstanding. Farming is incredibly capital intensive; high land and equipment prices make it really difficult to get started if you don’t inherit family assets. Politicians regularly point to a lower threshold for estate taxes as a way to tax the rich. The reality for farmers and many family businesses is that property and equipment quickly add up to large figures.

Those dollar signs aren’t the same as cash. They represent the tractor and field used to plant a crop. Most family farms would have to sell land and equipment to pay estate taxes if the threshold were lowered. Unless a farmer sells out, they will never see the kind of money in cash that makes people think they are rich.

Farmers deal with bigger numbers than other people. They may bring in $1 million in a great year and $100,000 the next – before expenses. After paying for seed, fertilizer, machinery, fuel, rent and other business costs, a farmer may make six figures or lose money for the year.

Farmers have tremendous amounts of money invested in equipment, inputs and land. Their risk level is high; they make many decisions without knowing if the weather or market at harvest will cover the costs they’ve already incurred.  All farmers experience bad years. Sometimes they event put a farmer out of business. The stress and uncertainty of trying to keep the farm alive for the next generation is often cause of mental health issues.

Judging a farmers’ income is complicated and difficult because there are too many factors; rich or poor, materialistic or humble, heavily leveraged or paid in cash. My experience is that farmers’ finances may look different than the average American, but we really aren’t that different at all.

NICKERSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The USD 309 Board of Education filled a vacant seat at their meeting on Monday night.&nbsp;Jeremy Schmidt, who has served on the South Hutchinson city council, was approved as the new BOE member.

Vice President of the board Jay Mitzner motioned to approve the appointment of Schmidt and board member Stacy Watson seconded the motion. The vote for approval was a unanimous decision.&nbsp;

There was a vacancy on the board because a member retired recently.&nbsp;

Also on the agenda at the meeting was a report from Nickerson High School's FBLA president Cody Spurlock and Haley McGill who is also a member of the team.&nbsp;

Spurlock and McGill qualified for the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida on June 28-July 2.

Spurlock said this is the first time since 2012, that Nickerson's FBLA team qualified for the national conference.&nbsp;

"In the past year&nbsp; we've seen a lot of accomplishments throughout the team beyond just qualifying for nationals," Spurlock said. "We had significantly more people place at districts than ever before. Beyond just competition, we've implemented some things to where to go out and compete, you need to reach those community service requirements which was something that me and some of my other officers implemented this year."&nbsp;

The Nickerson BOE also recognized the high school's FBLA team for having the third highest membership increase in the state of Kansas. McGill not only qualified for nationals but is also in her first year with the team.&nbsp;

"I have seen a significant change in the students from our school going from high schoolers you see walking about doing silly things in the hallway to genuine Future Business Leaders of America at these conferences," McGill said. "At state, at districts where we have to get all dressed up but its more than that. We become professional. We start to peek into our futures. We start to examine entrepreneurship, opening our own businesses, all of these new avenues that we didn't really know were available to us before."&nbsp;

Mitzner asked Spurlock how far away he and McGill are from reaching their fundraising goal to attend nationals and why he feels Nickerson's FBLA membership numbers have increased.&nbsp;

"It's an appetizing program to join. It's something to where you can join and be successful and have fun. We had a massive increase because getting people to join in FBLA is easy. You get them to go in and say, hey, come to this. We practice this many times a year and then at those practices we have fun and we practice and then we are competitive and win so its like, why wouldn't you want to join in type of thing."

Spurlock said the trip will cost around $10,000 for him, McGill and an advisor. He told the board that there is about $4,000 in the FBLA budget right now, meaning they need to raise $6,000 to attend the conference.&nbsp;

Nickerson BOE swears in new member, highlights FBLA students 

LANSING, Kan. — Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) resident Robert Edwin Blanchette, 44, died Monday, April 15, 2024. He was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff and Emergency Medical Service personnel administered life-saving measures but were unable to revive him. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Blanchette was serving a life sentence for convictions of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the commission of a crime in Reno County.

The Lansing Correctional Facility, formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary, opened in 1867. The facility only serves males and maintains maximum and medium units totaling 1,920 beds and a 512-bed minimum security unit.

Death at Lansing is man serving Reno County sentence

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Monday, the Hutchinson Fire Department commemorated the 111th anniversary of the department's first Line of Duty Death, the passing of James O'Loughlin on April 15, 1913.

According to the department, the fire apparatus was responding from Fire Station 2 at 12 West Sixth to a fire on East Avenue A.

Hutch Fire commemorates 1913 Line of Duty Death

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The County-owned Woodie Seat Bridge over the Arkansas River from 10th Avenue, South Hutchinson, north to Avenue F, Hutchinson, is closed beginning April 15, 2024 until further notice for bridge overlay. 

Work to the north of the bridge is also being completed by contractors working for the City of Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The 2024 National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 15-19.

"The reason we talk about Work Zone safety is because it's really, truly, for the safety of everybody," said Tim Potter with the Kansas Department of Transportation."About 90% of the time, or nine in ten times, the people who are injured in work zone crashes are motorists themselves."

There were more injuries in work zone crashes last year than the year before.

"Last year, in Kansas, we had nine people who died in work zone crashes," Potter said. "Five hundred and eight were injured. We'd like to get that number down. That's part of the reason we try to raise awareness to this."

Please be focused if you see a work zone ahead.

"The top contributing circumstance of work zone crashes is inattention," Potter said. "People are following the vehicle in front of them too closely. They are driving too fast for the conditions. We do typically have reduced speed signs in the work zones. It's double fines in all Kansas work zones, whether that's a major construction project or a short term maintenance project."

Orange is the primary color in work zones. Go Orange Day in Kansas is Wednesday, April 17. Everyone is encouraged to wear orange and show highway workers and everyone who works along the roadways how much their efforts are appreciated.&nbsp;

KDOT: Work Zone awareness important for drivers, too

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The official approval of the contract for new Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas is on the agenda for the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday.

According to the contract as printed in the meeting agenda documents, Villegas will start in Hutchinson on May 29, 2024 and receive a bi-weekly base salary of $6,250 or $162,500 annually and a one time payment of $15,000 for relocation, housing, down payment assistance and related incidentals.&nbsp;

He is required to move to Hutchinson within six months of his hire.

The City also is going to contribute $6000 a year to the City's 457 plan on Villegas' behalf as deferred compensation.

He will also receive a $500 a month vehicle allowance to use his own vehicle for city business and a $100 a month cell phone allowance.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Hutchinson Clinic plastic surgeon Nataliya Biskup, it is vital that she use her gifts to help people in her native Ukraine in the face of conflict that makes it hard to get the care that is her specialty.

"I was born in Lviv, Ukraine, which is very western Ukraine," Biskup said. "It's about 40 miles away from the Polish border. I emigrated to the United States with my parents when I was eight years old. I specialize in reconstruction of head and neck, of all sorts of wounds in the body, as well as cosmetic and aesthetic surgery. When this war kicked off, for me, it was a very painful experience, because I still have family in Ukraine. It really affected me, very personally. I saw an opportunity to be able to contribute in some way, to help ease the suffering."

Her first trip was spent in October with a Canadian group called Face the Future fixing the faces of people scarred by the war. This last trip in February focused on younger patients.

"This particular trip was actually to my hometown of Lviv, working with children that have cleft and craniofacial anomalies and helping those children, helping in the reconstruction of more complex cases that doctors there are not routinely used to dealing with," Biskup said. "They are also, at this point, with so much effort dedicated to the war and the treatment of war-related injuries, a lot of the children in Ukraine are having difficulty with accessing care."

Biskup said being relatively far from the front lines allowed her to do much of her work as she normally would.

"There are missiles and drones and things that have been fired into that area," Biskup said. "Certainly, during operations, there have been air raid sirens that go off during the operation, but when a patient is there on the table and you're helping them, that's the main focus, so you just continue on."

Typically, in the United States, a child with a cleft lip and palate would get their lip repaired at about three months and their palate repaired at nine months, but she was dealing with kids that are three and four years old to do those treatments on the February trip.

"It definitely gets a little bit more complicated as the child does get older," Biskup said. "One additional issue is just the level of complexity of cases that the Ukrainian surgeons can do is a little bit less. They are really trying to learn on these trips. A big part of these trips is operating, but also educating the local surgeons."

The hope for Biskup is that the next time she goes back to Ukraine, she will be able to go in peace and begin to see in the lives of people the type of reconstruction that is her specialty with faces and bodies. In addition to her work in Hutchinson, Biskup also works at Wesley in Wichita.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Hutchinson Clinic plastic surgeon Nataliya Biskup, it is vital that she use her gifts to help people in her native Ukraine in the face of conflict that makes it hard to get the care that is her specialty."I was born in Lviv, Ukraine, which is very western Ukraine," Biskup said. "It's about 40 miles away from the Polish border. I emigrated to the United States with my parents when I was eight years old. I specialize in reconstruction of head and neck, of all sorts of wounds in the body, as well as cosmetic and aesthetic surgery. When this war kicked off, for me, it was a very painful experience, because I still have family in Ukraine. It really affected me, very personally. I saw an opportunity to be able to contribute in some way, to help ease the suffering."Her first trip was spent in October with a Canadian group called Face the Future fixing the faces of people scarred by the war. This last trip in February focused on younger patients."This particular trip was actually to my hometown of Lviv, working with children that have cleft and craniofacial anomalies and helping those children, helping in the reconstruction of more complex cases that doctors there are not routinely used to dealing with," Biskup said. "They are also, at this point, with so much effort dedicated to the war and the treatment of war-related injuries, a lot of the children in Ukraine are having difficulty with accessing care."Biskup said being relatively far from the front lines allowed her to do much of her work as she normally would."There are missiles and drones and things that have been fired into that area," Biskup said. Reconstruction: Hutch Clinic surgeon returns to native Ukraine

The Nickerson-South Hutchison USD 309 FBLA team attended the State Leadership Conference April 4 and 5, where there were 1,600+ students from 99 different schools, all competing in business events. 

This is the largest group Nickerson High School has ever taken to state, with many competing for the first time. There are 78 events that students can choose from to compete in, for the chance to place in the top four of that event to make it to the&nbsp;National Leadership Conference which will take place this summer in late June through early July.&nbsp;

Cody Spurlock placed 1st in Sports &amp; Entertainment&nbsp;Management, 1st in Impromptu Speaking, and 3rd in Public Speaking. Since he qualified in all of these events, he had to choose one to compete in at Nationals. His choice is to compete in Impromptu Speaking.&nbsp;Haley McGill placed 2nd in Help Desk and 6th in Impromptu Speaking.
