HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man whose life has been defined by service, to his country, his community, and his fellow veterans, will lead this year’s Eagle Media Patriots Parade in downtown Hutchinson on Friday, July 4. 

Lowell Downey, a U.S. Air Force veteran and longtime advocate for the Kansas Honor Flight program, has been named Grand Marshal for the Independence Day celebration.

“I am looking forward to it,” Downey said. “Both my wife and I are excited about it.”

Downey has called Hutchinson home since 1987. Today, he resides at The Wesley retirement community, where he received the call with the invitation to serve as Grand Marshal.

“Our director of marketing at The Wesley gave me a call and asked if I would do it,” he said. “I’ve lived in Hutch a long time, I’m pretty much a permanent resident, so it means a lot to be part of something like this.”

Downey is best known for his work with the Kansas Honor Flight program, which has taken more than 4,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. He helped found the Hutchinson-based chapter in 2012 after discovering financial mismanagement at a previous organization. Since then, he’s become the central organizer of the local flight program, handling everything from veteran applications to trip logistics and fundraising.

To date, Kansas Honor Flight has completed 103 flights. Downey has personally attended 34 of them.

“It’s very rewarding,” Downey said. “When we started, we took World War II veterans, many of whom had never flown before. To watch them see the memorials for the first time was incredibly emotional.”

He recalled trips to the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where veterans stood in awe of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

“Some of the veterans would say, ‘That airplane probably saved my life,’ because they were scheduled to be part of the invasion of Japan,” he said.

Today, the Honor Flight focus has shifted to Vietnam veterans, many of whom were never properly welcomed home.

“Vietnam veterans were treated terribly when they returned,” Downey said. “They didn’t get closure. Taking them to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, letting them see the names on the wall, it brings that closure. You can see the emotion. It’s powerful.”

Downey served in the U.S. Air Force and later in the Air National Guard during the early 1960s, between the Korean and Vietnam wars. His service kept him stateside, where he worked as a machinist and aircraft maintenance specialist in Nebraska and Iowa.

“I met a lot of good people,” Downey said. “We just worked hard to keep airplanes flying.”

Downey’s leadership extends beyond military service. After spending 27 years in the fertilizer industry, he joined Collingwood Grain in Hutchinson in 1987. He was named president of the company following its acquisition by Archer Daniels Midland Corporation, serving in that role for 13 years until retiring at the end of 2002.

Following his official retirement, he continued working as a fertilizer broker and later consulted on a proposed fertilizer plant in Idaho.

Even in retirement, Downey remained devoted to service. He and his first wife were early volunteers for Kansas Honor Flight, serving as guardians on several of the organization’s earliest trips. After his wife passed away in 2017, Downey eventually moved into a duplex at The Wesley, where a new chapter of life quietly began.

“There was this charming lady who lived on the other side,” he said. “She brought me cookies from time to time. Long story short, we were married in 2019 and have been married six years. She’s been on one flight with me.”

Today, Downey helps coordinate four honor flights each year, now via chartered aircraft. Each flight includes around 100 veterans and a carefully planned support team, with stops at Arlington National Cemetery, the war memorials on the National Mall, and various museums.

“It takes a lot of planning, but it’s worth every second,” Downey said. “These trips change people’s lives.”

The Patriots Parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, in downtown Hutchinson. For Downey, leading the celebration is a reflection not only of his military and professional achievements, but of a lifetime spent giving back to the community he now calls home.

Downey brings lifetime of service to center stage as Patriots Parade Grand Marshal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Brayden McClure delivered a quality start on the mound and the Hutchinson Monarchs offense came alive early as Hutchinson earned a 10-5 win over the Kansas Cannons at Hobart-Detter Field on Sunday night.

McClure went seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two. The victory moved the Monarchs to 15-5 on the season.

Hutchinson scored in each of the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead. Jeter Worthley and Jake Gutierrez drew back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the first, and both would eventually come around to score. A sacrifice fly from Blake Bradford and an RBI double by Jake Knox helped pace the early offense.

After the Cannons closed the gap to 3-2 by the fourth, Hutchinson responded with a big sixth inning. The Monarchs plated five runs, highlighted by another sacrifice fly from AJ Mustow and RBI singles from Tyson Vassart and Omare Cross. The Monarchs tacked on a final run in the seventh on a Bradford RBI double to push the lead to 10-4.

The Cannons managed one more run in the eighth, but reliever Drew Vinduska closed the door with two scoreless innings to secure the win.

The Cannons were led by Hunter Alvord, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Starting pitcher Gavin Hoffman took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks across two innings.

The Monarchs have Monday off before hitting the road Tuesday for a rematch with the Cannons in Augusta. Hutchinson will return home later this week for more Sunflower Collegiate League action including a rescheduled game on Saturday night at home versus the Kingman Islanders and will resume the suspended game from last week versus the Wichita Wildcats that had to be rescheduled due to weather. That game will resume on Monday, July 7th.

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the vibrant life of Kathy Ann Collins, who passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, surrounded by family and sunshine—the way she would’ve wanted it. Kathy was born December 18, 1949, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the beloved daughter of Sammie and Patsy (Cornett) Collins of Burrton, KS.

&nbsp;A proud Kansan with a joyful spirit and a deep Christian faith, Kathy lived each day with kindness, laughter, and a contagious sense of fun. A true kid at heart, Kathy was known for her big hugs, bigger smile, and the jokes she always had ready—no matter the occasion. Whether sharing stories, flipping through true crime books, or soaking up the sun outdoors, she found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. She had an adventurous soul, never one to pass up a spontaneous trip, and always the first to say “yes” to new experiences.

Kathy wore many hats in her life—working the land as a farmer, and later as a dedicated administrative assistant in the aerospace and defense industry. But her favorite title by far was “Grandma.” Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was boundless, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Kathy is survived by her devoted partner of 25 years, Chaz Green of Mesa, AZ; her siblings Debbie Brauer of Wichita, KS, Sondra Collins of Las Vegas, NV, and Cindy (Hector Martinez) Collins of Tempe, AZ; her sons Chris (Nadine) Bontrager of Phoenix, AZ and Bo (Sarah) Bontrager of Parker, CO; six grandchildren—Caleb (Selena), Davin, Natalie, Hannah, Caiden, and Hayden; and two great-grandchildren—Aurora and Draiden. She leaves behind countless memories and a legacy of laughter, love, and light.

Kathy is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Sammie J. Collins.

A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at Valley Township Cemetery in Burrton, KS, at a later date.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs dropped their first home game of the summer Saturday night, falling 13-6 to the Derby Twins at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Twins erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning, breaking open what had been a close game and handing the Monarchs their first home loss of the 2025 season. Hutchinson now sits at 14-5 on the year and will look to rebound Sunday night against the Kansas Cannons. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Despite leading 4-2 after five innings, the Monarchs couldn’t hold off a relentless Derby offense that tallied 14 hits and capitalized on Hutchinson’s miscues, including two costly errors and a wild pitch in the seventh that helped spark the rally.

Griffin Cooley, Joel Lindahl, and Cade Sutherland led the charge for Derby. Sutherland crushed a two-run homer to center in the seventh and added a two-run triple in the ninth, finishing with four RBIs. Lindahl added a bases-clearing double to cap the seventh-inning outburst.

Monarchs starter Ethan Giesbrecht pitched effectively through five innings, striking out eight and allowing just three runs before the Twins’ bats came alive against the Hutchinson bullpen.

Jake Gutierrez paced the Monarchs at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI's in his debut as a Monarch. Gutierrez is from Lubbock, Texas and just joined the Monarchs. Jackson Legg added three hits and an RBI double, while Dylan Bell scored twice and drew two walks.

Hutchinson had a chance to respond late, scoring in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the deficit to 10-6, but the Twins tacked on three more in the ninth to seal the victory.

The loss ends a dominant home stretch for the Monarchs, who had previously gone 8-0 at Hobart-Detter to open the season.

⚾ Derby Twins hand Monarchs first home loss in 13-6 rout

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Friday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by Zachary Lynn&nbsp;Stinson, 43, Hutchinson, was southbound on Kansas 13 at Cedar Creek Road. The car entered into a curve, traveled left of center and encountered a northbound car. The driver corrected back into the southbound lane and lost control of the car. The car traveled onto the east shoulder, struck two guard rails and a tree.

EMS transported&nbsp;Stinson to Stormont Vail. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after car strikes guard rails, tree

For a quarter-century, Hutchinson has welcomed teenagers from Northern Ireland each summer through the Ulster Project — a faith-based peace and leadership program that continues to change lives on both sides of the Atlantic.

This summer, nine Northern Irish teens, both Catholic and Protestant, will arrive in Hutchinson on Tuesday evening after a grueling 24-hour journey. The goal: reconciliation and leadership development in a country still dealing with deep-rooted sectarian divides.

“The whole idea is to let young people see that they can have a voice and make a difference,” said Keith Neill, one of the project’s local organizers. “Over the years, we've seen that happen. Some of the teens who came to Hutchinson are now in government in Ireland, making the world a better place.”

Founded 50 years ago in the U.S. and Northern Ireland, the Ulster Project seeks to bring together young leaders who might never otherwise meet due to the historical tension between Catholic and Protestant communities. Hutchinson has been a proud host city since 2000, with only brief pauses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The visiting teens are matched with local host families, each with a teen of similar age. The experience is immersive: the Northern Irish youth live, work, and play side-by-side with their Kansas counterparts for 24 days, participating in a tightly scheduled mix of service projects, cultural outings, and community events.

Activities this summer include pool parties, rope courses in Newton, visits to Wichita’s Cowtown, paintball, and even a stop at Chicken N Pickle. Kansas State Fair Launches “Golden Ticket Giveaway” for Ultimate Fair Experience

Jeffrey D. Loane, 86, husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Campbell Loane, died June 23, 2025, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Born August 17,1938 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late J. Bruce and Orphea Lucille Loane. &nbsp;

He was the former Co-Owner and manager of a Fishing Resort and was employed by various Corrections and Social Service Agencies in Kentucky and Kansas. He received his BA from Centre College, and MSW from Washington University of St. Louis. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include: two sons, Jeff Loane, Jr., and Martin Loane both of Burgin; and one daughter, Cynthia Sheldon of Hutchinson, Kansas. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; daughter, Christi Elizabeth Phillips; and brother, Alan Loane.

Private Services will be held at the Burgin Memorial Gardens, Burgin Kentucky.

A wide range of health services and family-friendly activities will be available at a free Community Health Fair open to the public, thanks to a partnership of local and state organizations focused on wellness and veterans' support.

The health fair is Friday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the National Guard Armory at 1111 North Severance here in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The event is sponsored by the VFW, KS4Vets, the Kansas Army National Guard, the Kansas Office of Veterans Services, the Reno County Community Wellness Coalition, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Sunflower Health Plan, KanCare, and Healthy Blue.

Attendees will have access to a variety of basic health services, including a mobile mammogram unit, mental health resources, and general wellness screenings. Special services for veterans will also be available, offering information on benefits and support programs.

In addition to health resources, the fair will feature free haircuts and barbering, as well as a “Touch-a-Truck” activity that lets children and families get up close with emergency and service vehicles.

Organizers say the event is designed to serve everyone in the community while raising awareness about the many resources available in the region.

Hutch Post has learned of an ongoing investigation by the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) into suspected drone smuggling activity at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

Sources confirm that drones are being used to drop illegal drugs into the prison yard, where inmates retrieve the contraband. This smuggling method is believed to have contributed to a deadly drug-related incident inside the facility.

Officials have confirmed at least one inmate overdose death tied to the drug issue. The fatality occurred on March 15 of this year.

State Senator Michael Murphy responded to Hutch Post via email, stating, “I have heard there has been a serious issue with drugs getting in to the inmates.” His comments echo growing concerns about prison security and contraband prevention in Kansas correctional institutions.

Hutch Post has reached out to State Representative Bob Lewis of Garden City, who chairs the House Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee, as well as the Kansas Department of Corrections, for further comment. At this time, no official responses have been provided.

Drones being used to smuggle drugs into Hutchinson Correctional Facility 

Heartland Credit Union has announced the hiring of two seasoned professionals to its executive leadership team, bringing on Kevin Hess as Chief Financial Officer and Trace Hughes as Vice President of Brand and Marketing. Hess, a longtime financial executive with more than 25 years of experience, joins Heartland Credit Union as CFO, where he will be responsible for managing all aspects of the organization’s financial operations. His oversight includes general accounting, budgeting, forecasting, investment strategy, financial reporting, and asset-liability management.

Hess is also tasked with reviewing and enhancing internal documentation and operational procedures to support efficiency and scalability as Heartland continues to expand.

In his new position, Hughes will guide Heartland’s brand identity and marketing efforts across digital and traditional platforms. His responsibilities will include member onboarding and retention campaigns, brand standards, public relations, community engagement, and leading the credit union’s internal marketing team.

TOPEKA — A hiring freeze, deferred wage raises and delayed hospital maintenance are all on the table at the Hutchinson Regional Health Center as chief executive officer Benjamin Anderson and his team weigh the potential impacts of a federal budget bill that would axe Medicaid, forcing rural hospitals in Kansas to shutter.

Federal lawmakers are scrambling to approve the massive bill, which is replete with major tax cuts and public program reductions, before the Fourth of July. Since the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1" target="_blank">One Big, Beautiful Bill Act</a>&nbsp;was first proposed, Medicaid has been slated for billions in cuts, which has caused advocates and health providers to warn communities and elected officials of dire consequences.

Across the country, rural hospitals will face $70 billion in cuts over the next decade under the current version of the bill.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ruralhealth.us/blogs/2025/06/federal-medicaid-cuts-imperil-rural-hospitals-and-residents-new-report-finds" target="_blank">report</a>&nbsp;from the National Rural Health Association and Manatt Health, released Tuesday, found that rural hospitals will lose 21 cents out of every dollar they receive for funding Medicaid, the joint state and federal public health insurance program that serves more than 360,000 Kansans.

Kansas is now set to lose more than $4 billion in Medicaid funding if the bill passes in its current form, according to updated estimates from the Hutchinson-based United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. The total losses increased by nearly $280 million after changes to the bill in the U.S. Senate.

Cuts to Medicaid are “best done with a scalpel and not with a machete,” Anderson said during a Tuesday press briefing hosted by the rural health association.

Anderson said he is interested in stewardship of federal funds, but cuts to Medicaid aren’t the right way to do it. Those cuts don’t just threaten the accessibility of the health care system for those on Medicaid but for the entire system, he said.

“Cutting Medicaid actually doesn’t save money because it sends people into the emergency department, where they get the most expensive and inefficient and inappropriate care for their ailment,” he said.

Difficulty accessing quality care, inadequate insurance and existing financial distress are already playing out in the Hutchinson Regional Health Care System, Anderson said. The hospital in Hutchinson, which serves around 100,000 people in central Kansas, must prepare for federal cuts while cutting its own budget by $7.5 million, along with shouldering costs for people without insurance.

“The story of Hutchinson, Kansas, is the story of middle America,” Anderson said.

More than half of rural hospitals in Kansas are at risk of closing, and the report found that Kansas would experience a 15% reduction in total rural Medicaid hospital reimbursement under the proposed bill. Plus, 5,000 rural Kansans enrolled in Medicaid are expected to lose coverage, according to the report.

The proposed bill passed the U.S. House by a one-vote margin May 22. The U.S. Senate is expected to conduct negotiations this week.

Cindy Mann with Manatt Health, an arm of a national law and consulting firm, said during the press briefing that the cuts to public programs, including Medicaid, within the proposal are designed to reduce spending to partially offset the costs of lost revenue from tax cuts.

“In some states, the cuts are really big, and in other states, they’re bigger,” she said.

Half of all children and one in five adults in rural communities across America rely on Medicaid. Half of all births in rural communities are paid for by Medicaid, according to the report.

All the while, rural health providers are struggling to keep their doors open, Mann said.

The Kansas Republican Congressional delegation has been publicly supportive of the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act. Other Republicans, including U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, have said they won’t vote for a bill that cuts Medicaid benefits and targets rural hospitals, according to reporting from&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/06/06/repub/u-s-senate-gop-will-try-to-drag-trumps-mega-bill-across-the-finish-line/">Stateline</a>. The U.S. Senate could create a rural hospital stabilization fund to mitigate Medicaid cuts, but specifics on negotiations have yet to be released.

One of Craig Thompson’s greatest fears is what federal cuts might do to maternity care access. Mothers on Medicaid are nearly three times more likely to experience a bad health outcome than a mother on commercial insurance, said Thompson, CEO of Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare in Clinton, Missouri.

Twelve rural hospitals have already closed in Missouri in recent years.

“But that doesn’t really tell the full story,” he said.

At existing care facilities in the state, shifts in the type of care offered have created a lack of health services in rural communities, especially when it comes to maternity care.&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/06/13/kansas-advocate-warns-federal-cuts-to-medicaid-will-accelerate-maternal-deaths/">A similar story</a>&nbsp;has played out in Kansas, where maternity care deserts are commonplace in rural areas.

As CEO of the HCC Network, a collection of six community health centers serving rural areas in Missouri, Toniann Richard often uses the term “whack-a-mole” to describe the necessary approach to the everyday challenges of being a health care leader.

She also used the term to characterize the feeling patients experience when they lose their coverage, which is expected to become more common under the federal proposal. They don’t know what to do, Richard said.

Based on Richard’s unit cost of health care analysis, the fewer people who are insured, the higher the cost of health care will be.

Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association, said the federal proposal threatens the viability of rural facilities by eliminating Medicaid coverage and reducing access to care for rural patients.

“It’s very clear that Medicaid cuts will result in rural hospital closures, resulting in loss of access to care for those living in rural America,” he said in a press release.

An updated&nbsp;<a href="https://healthfund.org/a/wp-content/uploads/Medicaid-Cut-Impacts-to-KS-Senate-bill-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">analysis</a>&nbsp;commissioned by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and REACH Healthcare Foundation and conducted by Manatt Health predicts Kansas will lose a combined $826 million in federal and state Medicaid funds in the first year of cuts and $4.05 billion over 10 years. Of that total, Kansas&nbsp; hospitals are expected to lose $664 million in state and federal Medicaid funding in the first year and $2.8 billion over 10 years.&nbsp;

Based on updated modeling, about 13,000 fewer Kansans, both urban and rural, would be able to enroll in Medicaid, which could lead to increased uninsured rates, according to the analysis.

David Jordan, president and CEO of the health fund, encouraged lawmakers to strengthen rural health systems instead of weakening them through the proposal.

“Our hope was for the Senate to protect rural hospitals and minimize coverage loss,” he said in a news release. “However, the plan the Senate is rushing through the process will cut $4 billion from our Medicaid program and make it harder to sustain health care in rural Kansas communities.”

Brenda Sharpe, president and CEO at REACH Healthcare Foundation, said rural hospitals will be uniquely challenged if Medicaid cuts pass. They are often sole sources of preventative care, prenatal visits and mental health support. The cuts put entire communities at risk, she said.

Sixty-three rural hospitals in Kansas are facing closure, and 87% of hospitals in Kansas are operating in the red, according to the fund. Twenty-six are at immediate risk of closure.

“Without them,” Sharpe said, “families may be forced to go without care altogether.”

Kansans join House Democrats’ Fight Back Tour in Hutchinson

RENO COUNTY—An inmate died Tuesday at the Reno County Correctional Facility.

Just after 1:30 a.m., the inmate identified as 41-year-old&nbsp; Joshua Caleb Ledbetter of Hutchinson, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to a statement from the Reno County Sheriff's office.

Jail personnel and emergency responders were immediately notified. Despite efforts by on-site staff he was pronounced deceased.

There is no indication of foul play. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will provide an independent investigation. The Reno County Coroner determine the cause of death.

Reno Co. inmate accused of child sex crimes found dead in his cell

Patrick David McLain passed away on May 26th, 2025, in Shoreline, WA due to complications of Huntington’s Disease. Born on January 17th, 1950, in Hutchinson, KS, he was the youngest of four children of James T. McLain and Juanita (Kennedy) F. McLain.

Pat pursued his education with dedication, attending Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Junior College, the University of Kansas, and last at the University of Washington, where he earned his master's in electrical engineering in 1977. His career at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration began soon thereafter, where he participated in oceanic research, designing and building circuit boards for studies in the Pacific Ocean. He worked with an amazing, tight, productive group at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Pat often traveled aboard NOAA ships, deploying, and maintaining research instruments throughout the region. He received an award in Washington DC for his work. His work brought him great fulfillment, and he retired after an accomplished 38-year career.

In 1973, Pat married Karen Wilson, and a few years later settled in the Seattle area. Two children were adopted, Kelly and Jae, completing the family. A devoted family, Pat cherished his time traveling with the family, particularly to Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, and to Kansas to visit family and friends. He loved being a dad and participated in their lives fully.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jae, in 2021, and his brother Mike, in 2023. In addition to his wife Karen and daughter Kelly, of Shoreline, WA, Pat is survived by his brother, Larry (Pat) McLain, and his sister, Merilyn Harris, of Hutchinson, and his beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews of the McLain and Wilson families.

Pat lived his life to the fullest and had wide-ranging passions, including hanging with his kids, reading (voraciously), skiing, gardening, boating at Lake Winnipesaukee, watching the Seahawks and KU basketball. He enjoyed jazz music and Tai Chi and most of all spending time with his family. He was a fun and loving husband and father. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, intellect, devotion, his warm smile, and beautiful blue eyes.

Pat was an exceptional man, and he handled his Huntington’s Disease with grace, never complaining.

A celebration of his life is planned for August 10, 2025, at St Theresa’s Catholic Church at noon.

Gene Austin Elliott, 87, of Hutchinson, KS, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2025. He was born on September 27, 1937, in Eureka, KS, to Archie and Treva (Rayburn) Elliott.

Gene graduated from McPherson High School in 1955 and earned a degree in Business from McPherson College in 1959. On March 30, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Rossow. They shared 54 beautiful years of marriage before her passing in 2012.

In 1967, Gene and Rhonda moved to Hutchinson, where they purchased an insurance agency that would later become Elliott Insurance Management Inc. Gene owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2006. He loved his work and took pride in servicing his clients and community. Gene served as president of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents and was the State National Director for Kansas, representing the industry at the national level. His daughter, Jodee, joined the agency in 1987, and the two worked side by side for nearly two decades.

Gene embodied the American Dream-through hard work, perseverance and faith, he built a business and provided for his family.

Gene proudly served his country in the Reserve Unit of the National Guard and was a lifelong patriot. He was also a member of Inspire Church, where he served on the board and loved his faith community.

As a longtime Scoutmaster of Troop One, Gene guided many young men to achieve their Eagle Scout rank - including his two sons, Tim and Kip.

A lifelong athlete, Gene excelled in football, basketball, American Legion baseball, and pole vaulting during his school years at McPherson High and McPherson College. His love for sports continued throughout his life. Gene rarely missed a Hutchinson High or Hutchinson Community College game. After college, he played slow-pitch softball until he was 82 years of age proudly sponsoring the Elliott Insurance team for many years. Gene also played competitively in Kansas City and after retirement, in Arizona. He loved coaching his children and cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines.

For over 40 years, Gene could be found at the Village Inn most mornings around 8 a.m., sharing coffee, laughter and “Monday morning quarterbacking” with his longtime buddies. He cherished these times and these men.

Gene was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Rhonda; son, Tim; parents; and brother, Carl.

He is survived by: his loving companion, Margie Lundmark; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Elliott of Overland Park; son, Kip Elliott of Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Jodee and Kevin Bowen of Hutchinson. Gene leaves behind 8 grandchildren: Alicia Billings (Toby), Jordan Billings (Heather), Megan Machen (Ben), Michael Elliott, Elli Houston (Ryan), Trace Bowen (Cori), Luke Elliott (Gaby) and Will Elliott (Ella). He was also blessed with 4 great-grandchildren: Elliott, Audrey, Olive, and Hudson.

Monroe, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Kansas Army National Guard.
