
Several area golfers and two area teams earned state berths Monday during KSHSAA boys golf sub-state tournaments.
State qualifiers were determined by team and individual finishes. The top three teams at each boys sub-state qualified for state, while the top five lowest individual scores not on a qualifying team also advanced. Some sub-state sites will play Tuesday.
Class 5A
Hutchinson senior Alex Haas qualified for the Class 5A state tournament at the Smoky Hill Country Club sub-state in Hays.
Haas shot an 85, opening with a 37 on the front nine before closing with a 48. He tied for 15th overall and earned one of the individual qualifying spots for golfers who were not part of a qualifying team.
Hutchinson finished seventh with a 388. Hays won the team title with a 313, while Goddard Eisenhower and De Soto tied for second with 324s. All three teams qualified for state.
Hays’ Caleb Thompson won medalist honors with a 1-under-par 70. Maks Dreiling added a 97 for Hutchinson, followed by Teagan England with a 100, Landyn Powell with a 106, Kale Dreiling with a 111 and Kye Reneau with a 113.
Class 3A
Hesston ran away with the Class 3A sub-state championship at Salina Municipal Golf Course, shooting a 296 to earn a team berth at state.
Nemaha Central placed second with a 334, and Marysville finished third with a 336. All three teams qualified for state.
Among area teams, Kingman had the top finish, placing sixth with a 367. Halstead finished eighth with a 386, Lyons was 12th with a 435, and Haven was 13th with a 460.
Hesston’s Carter Frey won medalist honors with a 1-over-par 71. Kingman’s Chaz Snyder and Halstead’s Maxx Linton led area finishers, each shooting an 88 to tie for 17th. Lyons’ Noah Geeves shot a 90 and tied for 21st.
Kingman also got 92s from Jace Sasina and Grady McBeth, while Malachi Graber shot a 95. Halstead’s Lance Anderson and Aaron Learn each shot 98s. Lane Hoskinson led Haven with a 103.
Class 2A
Hutchinson Trinity Catholic won the Class 2A sub-state championship at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg, shooting a 334 to qualify for state.
St. Mary’s Colgan placed second with a 359, and Sterling finished third with a 387. All three teams qualified for state.
Humboldt’s Connor Newman won medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. Trinity’s Tyler Casebolt was second with a 75.
Trinity Catholic had five players finish in the top 10. Seamus Hogan tied for fifth with an 85, while Miles Blaylock and Ian Shaw each shot 87 and tied for seventh. Dean Nelson tied for 10th with an 88. Matt Armour added a 97.
Sterling was led by Wyatt Newberry, who tied for 10th with an 88. Lane Weigel shot a 94 and placed 14th, Ian Dillard added a 100, Cameron Morris shot a 105, Zac Wohler finished with a 117, and Billy Higgins had a 123.
Sedgwick finished eighth with a 462. Renley E. led the Cardinals with a 98, Brady Hansen shot a 106, Hayden Gaede added a 128, Ethan Merz shot a 130, Nate Hansen finished with a 136, and Greyson Howell had a 138.
At Marion Country Club, Inman competed with three golfers and did not record a team score.
Ellinwood won the sub-state title with a 343, followed by Thomas More Prep-Marian with a 350 and Republic County with a 361. All three teams qualified for state.
Ellinwood’s Luke Heinz won medalist honors with a 78. Creighton Friesen led Inman with a 96 and tied for 19th. Braeden Stutzman shot a 116, and Wyatt Jonas finished with a 128. No Inman golfer was marked as a state qualifier in the results.
Class 1A
Hutchinson Central Christian’s Cael Kooiman and Tyler Reed both qualified for the Class 1A state tournament at Stafford County Country Club.
Central Christian finished fifth in the team standings with a 378. South Gray won the sub-state title with a 331, followed by Kiowa County with a 336 and Hodgeman County with a 352. All three teams qualified for state.
Kooiman led the Cougars with an 80 and finished fourth overall. Reed shot an 83 and tied for sixth. Both were marked as individual state qualifiers.
Central Christian also got a 105 from Adam Eigsti, a 110 from Bruce Wilson, a 117 from Karson Sullivan and a 127 from Bo Hobbes.
Pretty Prairie did not record a team score. Dawson Dick led the Bulldogs with a 98, followed by Weston Lanning with a 105 and Eli Anderson with a 109.
South Gray’s Gavin Wahl won medalist honors with a 69.
