Mary S. Rintoul, 67, of Hutchinson, died April 14, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born March 15, 1955, in Garden City, to David and Mildred (Heinemann) Rintoul.
Mary graduated from Garden City High School in 1973, and from journalism school at Kansas University in 1977. Following her graduation from KU, she was the sports reporter for the Ellsworth Reporter and began working for the Hutchinson News in 1985, retiring as Managing Editor after 30 years. Mary loved to play bridge and Scrabble. She also interviewed the residents and compiled a newsletter for her senior community at Legend of Hutchinson.
Mary was known for her quick wit and her insightful, sometimes acerbic, writings about human beings and the institutions that they have created. She was serious, thorough, and lived up to the highest standards of journalism in her work at both the Ellsworth Reporter and the Hutchinson News.
Mary is survived by her son, Max Rintoul, Dallas, TX; sisters, Helen Wells (Al), Hutchinson, Anne Rintoul, Hutchinson, Janet Young (John), Grand Junction, CO; brothers, David Rintoul (Elizabeth Dodd), Manhattan, John Rintoul (Betty), Carrboro, North Carolina; and many beloved nieces and nephews, all of whom invite Mary’s friends, relatives and former co-workers to join them in a Celebration of her Life to be held at the Hutchinson Cosmosphere, 1100 N. Plum, Hutchinson, on Saturday, August 13, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. In honor of Mary’s Jayhawk status, KU attire is encouraged!
A Memory Book will be available for attendees to record memories of their time with Mary.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
