🏐 HutchCC VB: Dragons drop pair to close out home Classic

Sophomore Baylee Miller had a combined 36 kills on Saturday, but the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team suffered a pair of losses to nationally ranked opponents on Saturday at the Blue Dragon Classic.

The day started off with a three-set loss to No. 8 Trinity Valley, 17-25, 21-25, 17-25.

The Blue Dragons then dropped the first two sets to No. 17 Mineral Area, rallied to win sets 3 and 4, but the Cardinals rallied from four points down midway through the decisive set to defeat Hutchinson 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12.

Hutchinson went 1-3 in its annual home tournament and fell to 17-8 overall. The Blue Dragons return to Jayhawk West play on Monday at Barton in Great Bend.

MINERAL AREA RECAP

After forcing the fifth set, the Dragons had momentum. Miller had a back-row kill for a 3-0 lead. Morgan Harvey had a service ace for a 5-2 lead. The Dragons then led 9-5 after Mineral Area was called for a net violation.

The Cardinals then scored five in a row to take a 10-9 lead. The Dragons tied the set at 10-, 11- and 12-all. Mineral Area scored the final three points of the match.

Miller hit .322 to lead the Blue Dragons with 24 kills on 56 attacks. Freshman Taniya Golden was the only other Blue Dragon in double figures with 14 kills.

Sophomore Blondie Penaflor, Golden and freshman Ashlyn Long had four blocks each.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 34 assists. Freshman Giovanna Ravenhani had 14 assists.

Freshman Perrine Blanc had 12 digs. Serrano had eight digs.

TRINITY VALLEY RECAP

No. 8 Trinity Valley took advantage of a struggling Blue Dragon serve receive and 26 Dragon attack errors in a decisive sweep over Hutchinson.

Miller led the Blue Dragons with 12 kills and a block. Golden added nine kills. Penaflor and freshman Anna Dean had four kills each.

Serrano had 22 assists with five digs. Penaflor had four total blocks.

Trinity Valley had 44 kills with five blocks. The Dragons had 34 kills with five blocks.
