
KINGMAN, Kan. — Two people were injured in an early morning shooting in rural Kingman County on Independence Day, and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene, according to the Kingman County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Travis Sowers said deputies were dispatched at approximately 1:36 a.m. Saturday, July 4, following a report of shots fired in the northeast quadrant of Kingman County.
During the initial investigation, deputies determined a verbal altercation broke out between several adult men attending an event. Authorities said the dispute escalated when one individual allegedly produced a handgun and fired multiple shots.
Two people, identified by the sheriff's office as subjects involved with the suspect, were struck by the gunfire. Both victims were transported by multiple EMS agencies to hospitals in the Wichita area for treatment. Their conditions have not been released.
The suspected shooter was arrested at the scene. No additional information about the suspect or potential charges has been released.
While responding to the shooting, a Kingman County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a single-vehicle crash on a rural road while driving with emergency lights and siren activated.
The deputy suffered minor injuries and was transported by EMS to a Wichita hospital, where they were treated and later released.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. No further details have been released.
Officials also noted that all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
