NICKERSON, Kan. — With a large number of teachers either testing positive for COVID or needing to quarantine the Nickerson School District has put more than 70 South Hutchinson Elementary School students into quarantine.

Superintendent Dawn Johnson said that 16 teachers are out of school and with a shortage of substitutes, the decision has been made to close the school building until after Thanksgiving and go to full remote learning.

Johnson says the middle school and high school are already in full remote learning with small groups allowed to attend vocational classes in person. Nickerson Elementary is already a small school with small classes so they are still in full in person learning.

Johnson says they hope to reopen the South Hutchinson Elementary School at least on a limited basis by November 30.
