Dangerous heat is expected to continue across much of central and south-central Kansas through Tuesday, prompting the National Weather Service to keep a Heat Advisory in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The advisory includes Reno, Rice, McPherson, Harvey, Marion, Chase and Pratt counties, along with communities such as Hutchinson, Lyons, Sterling, McPherson, Marion, Peabody, Hillsboro, Newton and Pratt.
Forecasters say afternoon heat index values could reach as high as 108 degrees as hot temperatures combine with high humidity. The prolonged period of dangerous heat increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or spending extended periods outdoors.
The National Weather Service urges residents to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and check on relatives, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Anyone who must work outside should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations to reduce the risk of heat illness.
Officials encourage residents to recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is overcome by the heat, they should be moved to a cool, shaded area immediately.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. Anyone showing symptoms of heat stroke should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911.
