HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Hutchinson High Basketball earned a split with Great Bend on Homecoming night at the Salthawk Activity Center last night with the Salthawk girls pulling away from the Panthers in the second half to win 53-22. Girls Recap:
The Salthawk girls took advantage of knocking down 12 three point baskets in the second half to pull away from the Panthers 53-22.
After a really slow start including only one basket scored in the first quarter and that was a banked in three point shot by Kaia Smith, the Salthawks blitzed the Panthers in the second half.
Hutch was led by Kaia Smith's 22 points as she cashed in on a great third quarter with 13 points scored. Grace Posh added 13 and Tenley Keeton came off the bench to add seven points. Freshman Lynnea Alverez hit two huge 3 point baskets in the 2nd quarter to jump start a big Salthawk run to finish with six points.
Defense was solid again for the Salthawks as they forced 22 Great Bend turnovers in total.
Hutchinson (5-1) now host the Derby Panthers on Tuesday night in a stand alone game at 7:30pm at the Salthawk Activity Center. the JV team will play at 6pm. KWBW will broadcast the varsity game with pregame at 7:15pm.
Boys Recap:
After a great game Tuesday night versus Valley Center, the Salthawk Boys hit a wall on Friday allowing Great Bend to turn a seven point 32-25 lead into a 30 point rout in the second half to fall to the Panthers 67-37 in the late game on Friday night.
Great Bend attacked the rim all night long and either was successful in getting a follow-up basket or was fouled to pull away from Hutchinson.
Great Bend held the Salthawks to only one Terrell King third quarter basket and two Levi Kepler free throws as the Panthers only allowed those four third quarter points.
King led Hutchinson in scoring with 10 points, Taishaun Govain added eight.
It was only the second loss of the season for the Salthawks after losing an opening season game to the Maize Eagles back in December.
The Panthers were led by junior sensation Ian Premer's 22 points and Ben Nicholson's 13 points
The Salthawk next game will be Thursday afternoon in McPherson as they drew Blue Valley West out of Overland Park, Kansas in the first day of the McPherson Invitationals at 4:35pm.
