👟 Trinity Catholic, other area athletes shine at HOA meet

BENNINGTON, Kan. — Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic had several top finishes Thursday at the Heart of America League track and field meet at Bennington.

The Trinity Catholic boys were led by Isaac Hammersmith, who won the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 9.5 inches. Hammersmith also finished second in the high jump at 6-2 and fourth in the triple jump at 41-7.5.

Jacob Lindstrom won the boys 1,600 meters for the Celtics in 4 minutes, 33.85 seconds. Trinity Catholic also picked up a third-place finish from John Lindstrom in the 1,600 in 4:43.50.

Trinity Catholic’s boys also had a strong day in the relays and sprints. The Celtics finished second in the 4x800 relay in 8:25.64 and third in the 4x100 relay in 45.08. Owen Hammersmith was third in the 100 in 11.60 and fourth in the 400 in 53.71. Roberto Guerrero finished second in the 400 in 52.73.

Ian Rios added points in both hurdle races for Trinity Catholic, taking sixth in the 110 hurdles in 16.84 and fifth in the 300 hurdles in 42.75. Adahir Guerrero was eighth in the 300 hurdles in 44.12.

In the throws, Porter Metterich finished fifth in the boys discus with a throw of 129-1.

On the girls side for Trinity Catholic, Eilley Cost won the discus with a throw of 124-10 and added a fifth-place finish in the shot put at 35-11.25. Azlyn Cost finished seventh in the discus at 100-2 and eighth in the shot put at 32-7.75.

Melanie Maya was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.50 and fifth in the 300 hurdles in 52.10. Kara Nelson finished eighth in the pole vault at 8-0.

Inman had several champions. The Teutons won the girls 4x100 relay in 50.01 and the boys 4x800 relay in 8:20.39. Brooklyn Black won the girls 300 hurdles in 47.16 and finished third in the 100 hurdles in 16.23. Malachi Brunk won the boys javelin with a throw of 161-3 and was third in the 300 hurdles in 41.76. Bo O’Neill won the discus at 164-2 and finished second in the shot put at 46-3.

Moundridge also had a big day in the jumps. Heath Churchill won the boys high jump at 6-6 and finished second in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Kaizer Kannitz won the boys triple jump at 44-8. Cammi Unruh won the girls 100 in 12.69 and the triple jump at 34-8, while also finishing second in the long jump at 16-0. Moundridge won the girls 4x800 relay in 10:11.69.

Sterling was led by Zane Farney, who swept the boys hurdles. Farney won the 110 hurdles in 14.97 and the 300 hurdles in 39.39. Julia Kilgore won the girls 400 in 57.18 and was the top qualifier in the 200 preliminaries in 26.41. Jacob Lewis added a third-place finish in the high jump at 6-0, fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 110 hurdles.
