HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Harvey County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about scam callers who are falsely claiming to be a sheriff's deputy in an effort to intimidate people into paying supposed fines or resolving nonexistent legal issues.
In a social media post, the sheriff's office said scammers have recently been impersonating Sgt. Jeff Van Horn, telling victims they missed a court date or attempting to pressure them into taking immediate action.
The department used humor to make its point, joking that Sgt. Van Horn is known for his beard, strength and crime-fighting abilities, but emphasizing that he does not call people to coordinate court appearances or collect payments.

Officials said residents should be suspicious of any unsolicited call in which someone claims to be from law enforcement and demands payment, threatens arrest or pressures them to act immediately.
The sheriff's office reminded the public that legitimate law enforcement officers do not request payment over the phone to resolve warrants, missed court appearances or other legal matters.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and contact the Harvey County Sheriff's Office directly at 316-284-6960 to verify whether the call is legitimate.
Authorities say scam calls remain a persistent problem and urge residents to remain cautious, especially when callers use high-pressure tactics or demand immediate payment.
