The Hutchinson Police Department announced that Traffic Officer Lane Hammond has received the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Silver Award for his lifesaving actions during an emergency response in 2025.

According to the department, officers were dispatched on Oct. 2, 2025, to a reported stabbing at a residence within the Hutchinson city limits. The incident occurred next door to Hammond’s home.

Dispatch advised that the victim, an 85-year-old man, had suffered self-inflicted lacerations. Authorities said the victim’s daughter initially sought help by running to Hammond’s residence after finding her father surrounded by a significant amount of blood.

When additional officers arrived at the scene, they found Hammond already administering emergency first aid. The department said Hammond applied direct pressure to the victim’s wounds with a towel in an effort to control severe bleeding while also remaining in contact with dispatch by phone.

Police credited Hammond’s quick response and decisive actions with helping sustain the victim until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The victim was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized and underwent surgery for his injuries. Authorities said he was expected to make a full recovery.

The Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Silver Award recognizes officers for exceptional acts of service and lifesaving efforts in the line of duty.
