JOB TITLE: CMA (Certified Medication Aide)

DEPARTMENT: Nursing

SUPERVISOR: Director of Nursing, ADON, Care Coordinator and Charge Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY: The CMA is responsible for administering medication under the supervision of the charge nurse. She/he maintains accurate records reflecting medication administration. She/he observes and reports changes in the resident physical and mental condition to the charge nurse.

EDUCATION: Passed State exam for CMA. Current state registration as CMA.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

1. Follows established performance standards and implements facility P & P.

2. Implements the “resident Bill of Rights.”

3. Attends facility education in-services/staff meetings.

4. Assumes responsibility for compliance with federal, state and facility regulations.

5. Documents medications provided and the resident response or lack of, timely, and accurately.

6. Assesses and reports changes in resident conditions to the charge nurse immediately.

7. Willing and able to perform basic CNA skills when needed.

8. Follow the 6 basic rules for administering medication:

RIGHT: Resident, Drug, Time, Route, Dose, and Documentation

9. All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.

10. Familiar with following and enforcing facility policy and procedures.

11. Familiar with and refer to the Medication Manual for administration techniques.

FUNCTIONS:

1. Administers meds practicing the 6 basic rights.

2. Charts only after the medication has been given, or document if the med not administered.

3. Charts medications as being dispensed.

4. Crushes medications that are safe to be crushed when beneficial to the resident.

5. If a PRN medication has been given, chart indication why med is needed and effective by the end of the shift and report to the charge nurse. PRN cannot be administered without the direction of the charge nurse.

6. Notify the charge nurse if pending orders need to be reviewed.

7. Reports and fills out a witness statement when a medication error occurs and notifies the charge nurse. A medication error has occurred when: any of the RIGHTS of administration is in error. *Medication is considered timely if given within 1 hour before or after the ordered time.

8. Passes supplement at prescribed times. Delivers HS snacks and drinks to each resident's room.

9. Assists charge nurse as needed.

10. Remains with the resident until all medication has been swallowed unless the resident has a “Self-Administration of Medication” form in their chart.

11. Dispenses medication according to the bubble pack system and from medication bottles.

12. Restocks spoon, cups, cleans counter of clutter, and stores supplies in appropriate cubicles or cupboards, and wipes off counter in med room at the end of the shift.

13. Cleans med cart at the end of the shift by using antiseptic toilettes to wipe off the top of the cart, fronts of drawers, and around the trash receptacle.

14. Wipes off liquid medication bottles.

15. Restocks med cups, soufflé cups, spoons, straws, pudding supplement cartons, etc.

Physical Specifications:

1. Works up to 8 hours a day under an hourly wage and expected to work beyond normal working hours when necessary.

2. Sits, stands, bends, pushes, pulls, and walks intermittently during the workday and is subject to frequent interruptions.

3. Lifting any object more than 25 pounds will need the assistance of equipment or another person.

4. Works with potentially infectious materials.

Employee will conduct any oral discussion of resident protected health information* with other staff or with residents and family members in a confidential manner and/or setting.

Employee will report suspected violations by any person obligated to safeguard resident protected electronic or other health information to your supervisor or security officer immediately.

*Protected health information is defined as individually identifiable health info of any kind.
