👟 Area athletes capture 28 titles at KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships

WICHITA, Kan. — Area athletes and relay teams combined to win 28 state championships as the KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships concluded Saturday at Crossland Stadium.

Buhler led the area with five Class 4A championships. Hesston and Sterling each claimed four titles, while Inman and Little River each finished with three. Cunningham and Hutchinson Trinity Catholic each won two championships. Halstead, McPherson, Moundridge, Pratt and Sedgwick also brought home gold medals.

The following is a school-by-school recap of the area’s final results. Preliminary results are not included.

Buhler

Buhler’s Garrett Gleason completed a standout sophomore season by winning two Class 4A sprint championships. Gleason captured the boys 100-meter dash in 10.63 seconds and the 200 in 21.71. He also placed second in the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches and 11th in the long jump at 20-5.50.

Zach Friesen added a state title in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72 seconds. He also finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 40.04.

Corbin Starkweather won the girls 3,200 in 10:55.81 and finished second in the 1,600 in 5:09.36. Jenna Lackey won the girls pole vault at 11-6 and placed third in the 200 in 25.30.

The Buhler girls finished second in the 4x100 relay in 49.07 and second in the 4x800 relay in 9:30.02. Isabella Friesen was fourth in the 3,200 in 11:15.71 and 10th in the 1,600 in 5:36.83. Isabella Rivera placed fifth in the 1,600 in 5:17.80 and seventh in the 800 in 2:22.38. Jessa Losew took third in the high jump at 5-4. Sofia Spies was sixth in the 100 in 12.55 and eighth in the 200 in 26.09. Bayleigh Miller finished fifth in the 100 hurdles in 16.24 and ninth in the 300 hurdles in 50.20.

Gavin Lindahl finished third in the boys 3,200 in 9:32.22 and fourth in the 1,600 in 4:26.56. Jacob Miller placed second in the javelin at 178-8. Max Harmony was second in the pole vault at 14-6.

Other Buhler final results included Ryan Cherry placing 11th in the boys 3,200 in 10:10.65; Zayden Mendenhall taking 12th in the boys 800 in 2:01.30; Laney Reiff placing 15th in the girls 800 in 2:29.60; Myjian Lee-McGlynn finishing 13th in the boys shot put at 46-2.75; William Griffin placing 15th in the boys shot put at 43-10.75; Aidan Howard taking 12th in the girls discus at 108-6; Gabe Auxier placing 15th in the boys discus at 118-10; Bishop Holmes taking 12th in the boys high jump at 6-0; Dexter Fleeman finishing 14th in the boys high jump at 5-10; Addysyn Keller placing 13th in the girls long jump at 15-8.50; Lauren Welch taking 15th in the girls javelin at 107-3; Sabella Regier placing ninth in the girls pole vault at 10-0; Khloe Blackwell finishing 13th in the girls pole vault at 9-6; Kodie Applegate taking 10th in the boys pole vault at 13-0; and the boys 4x800 relay placing 14th in 8:42.64.

Cunningham

Skyler Thimesch won two Class 1A championships for Cunningham. The senior captured the boys 200-meter dash in 22.18 seconds and the pole vault at 14-0. He also finished third in the 100 in 11.04.

John Paul Kerschen placed second in the pole vault at 13-6, while Andrew Kerschen took second in the javelin at 183-5. Cunningham’s boys 4x400 relay finished fifth in 3:35.08.

Other Cunningham final results included Weston Rogers placing 10th in the boys pole vault at 12-6; Cole Hageman finishing 13th in the boys high jump at 6-0; Liam McGuire taking 13th in the boys triple jump at 40-8.50; Grace Hageman placing 14th in the girls long jump at 15-9.25; and Kyra Morgan finishing 11th in the girls shot put at 36-8.75. Morgan did not record a mark in the discus, while Emily Ogg did not clear a height in the girls high jump and Sage Thimesch did not record a height in the girls pole vault.

Fairfield

Brodie Snodgrass placed sixth in the Class 1A boys long jump at 21-4.50. William McIver finished 13th in the boys 800 in 2:07.38.

Halstead

Halstead won the Class 3A girls 4x100-meter relay championship with a time of 49.57 seconds.

The Dragons also earned two medals in the boys high jump. Evan Wiedeman placed fourth at 6-4, while Noah Brantley finished sixth at 6-2. Halstead’s boys 4x100 relay placed fifth in 43.91.

Other Halstead final results included Jordy Schroeder placing 12th in the girls high jump at 5-0; Annie Williams finishing 13th in the girls long jump at 16-1.75; and Williams taking ninth in the girls triple jump at 35-1.

Haven

Isaiah Doherty placed sixth in the Class 3A boys 3,200-meter run in 9:50.68. Rilynn Patry finished eighth in the girls shot put at 36-3.50. Cody Holzrichter placed 16th in the boys discus at 139-5.

Hesston

Ashley Lehman completed a dominant Class 3A state meet by winning four individual championships. The senior captured the girls 100-meter dash in 12.01 seconds, the 200 in 24.10, the 400 in 54.94 and the pole vault at 12-8.25.

Reese Quinn added two medals in the distance races, finishing second in the girls 1,600 in 5:20.66 and third in the 3,200 in 11:41.58. The Hesston girls 4x800 relay placed second in 9:54.06.

Tessa Martin took second in the girls discus at 127-10. The Swathers’ boys 4x100 relay placed third in 43.25.

Additional medal finishes included Josie Heinrichs placing fourth in the girls 800 in 2:22.98; Avery Larson taking seventh in the girls 1,600 in 5:28.44; Maddy Colborn placing seventh in the girls triple jump at 36-2.25; Lyndon Dillon finishing eighth in the boys 400 in 51.50; Jamison Kohl taking seventh in the boys 300 hurdles in 40.48; Josh Duerksen placing seventh in the boys shot put at 51-11.50; and the boys 4x400 relay finishing fifth in 3:29.45.

Other Hesston final results included Mary O’Halloran placing ninth in the girls 3,200 in 12:37.38; Betsy Phillips finishing 15th in the girls shot put at 34-0.75; Drew Bartell taking 13th in the boys discus at 144-3; Emmet O’Halloran placing 12th in the boys javelin at 166-6; Lyndon Dillon finishing 10th in the boys pole vault at 12-6; and the boys 4x800 relay placing 15th in 8:41.70.

Hutchinson

Lamar Govain competed in the Class 5A boys high jump but did not clear a height.

Hutchinson-Central Christian

Cal Barnett placed eighth in the Class 1A boys triple jump at 43-0.50.

Townsly Huff finished ninth in the girls high jump at 5-0 and 17th in the girls javelin at 103-2. Harper Newcome placed 10th in the girls long jump at 16-0.25.

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic won two Class 2A relay championships. The Celtics captured the boys 4x800 relay in 8:04.31 and the boys 4x400 relay in 3:28.07.

The Lindstrom brothers combined for four medals in the distance races. Jacob Lindstrom placed second in the 1,600 in 4:29.87 and third in the 3,200 in 10:00.79. John Lindstrom finished second in the 3,200 in 9:58.30 and eighth in the 1,600 in 4:38.30.

Isaac Hammersmith earned two more medals, finishing second in the triple jump at 44-6.25 and third in the high jump at 6-6. Cameron Kiser placed third in the 800 in 2:01.60. Kaid McElgunn took third in the 100 in 11.03.

The Celtics’ boys 4x100 relay finished sixth in 44.35. Ambrose Pennycuff placed seventh in the 800 in 2:03.35, while Alex Guajardo finished eighth in the 400 in 51.68.

Other Trinity Catholic final results included Hammersmith placing 12th in the long jump at 20-0; Beau Towell taking 15th in the javelin at 149-4; and McElgunn competing in the 200 but not recording a time.

Inman

Tyler Martisko won two Class 2A distance championships for Inman. The senior captured the boys 1,600-meter run in 4:25.48 and the 800 in 1:58.93.

The Inman girls won the 4x100 relay championship in 49.79 seconds and finished second in the 4x400 relay in 4:05.59.

Taylor Froese earned two throwing medals, placing fourth in the girls shot put at 37-5.75 and fifth in the discus at 120-6. Bo O’Neill finished second in the boys discus at 163-4. The boys 4x800 relay also placed second in 8:11.92.

Brooklyn Black took fourth in the girls 300 hurdles in 46.38 and fifth in the 100 hurdles in 15.80. Lily Heflin finished third in the girls 800 in 2:20.19. Samuel Brensing placed fifth in the boys 110 hurdles in 15.24. Olivia Brunk took seventh in the girls 100 in 12.83.

Faith Baxter placed second in the adaptive girls 100-meter dash in 34.83 seconds and second in the adaptive girls 400 in 2:38.62.

Other Inman final results included Cooper Wiens placing 10th in the boys 800 in 2:04.93; Olivia Brunk taking ninth in the girls 200 in 26.00; Morgan Froese finishing 12th in the girls shot put at 34-11.25 and 12th in the girls discus at 109-11; Korbyn McClellan placing 17th in the boys long jump at 19-1.75; Malachi Brunk taking 16th in the boys javelin at 147-3; Kru Harris placing 15th in the boys triple jump at 41-1.75; Riley Roots finishing 18th in the boys 1,600 in 5:01.41; and the boys 4x400 relay placing seventh in 3:33.79.

Kingman

Trenton Clark placed third in the Class 3A boys 300-meter hurdles in 40.02 seconds.

Other Kingman final results included Logan Birkenbaugh placing 10th in the boys javelin at 170-1; Braylon Price finishing 12th in the boys high jump at 5-10; Marianna Guitierrez placing ninth in the girls 200 in 26.06; and Jayda DeWeese taking 17th in the girls high jump at 4-10.

Little River

Little River won three Class 1A state championships.

The Redskins captured the boys 4x100-meter relay title in 43.65 seconds. Freshman Dempsey Lafferty won the girls javelin at 147-2. Havana Olander captured the girls triple jump championship at 37-6.

Tristan Bristow finished second in the boys 100 in 10.94 and fourth in the 200 in 22.62. Cole Dieball earned two throwing medals, placing fifth in the boys discus at 164-10 and eighth in the shot put at 48-1.50. Christopher Norez took fourth in the boys javelin at 169-3, while Nash Look finished eighth at 162-11.

Little River’s girls 4x100 relay placed sixth in 51.43, and the girls 4x400 relay finished fifth in 4:14.62. Logan Schubert placed seventh in the boys 100 in 11.27 and ninth in the boys 300 hurdles in 41.79.

Other Little River final results included Abby Schroeder placing 13th in the girls 800 in 2:30.85; Ty Janette taking 17th in the boys high jump at 5-10; and Adelynne Strecker placing 15th in the girls long jump at 15-9.

Lyons

David Pando earned two Class 3A medals for Lyons. Pando placed fifth in the boys 100-meter dash in 11.18 seconds and eighth in the long jump at 20-4.25.

Hendrix Starbuck finished sixth in the boys discus at 161-8.

McPherson

McPherson won the Class 4A boys 4x800-meter relay championship with a time of 7:56.20.

Caleb Muehler earned three individual medals. The senior placed second in the boys 3,200 in 9:27.90, third in the 1,600 in 4:24.62 and fifth in the 800 in 1:58.08. Tripp Pelzel finished sixth in the 800 in 1:58.19.

Caden Wenderott took fifth in the boys discus at 158-0. Andi Buschbom placed fifth in the girls long jump at 17-2.75. Karsen Burris finished sixth in the girls javelin at 126-6.

The Bullpups’ girls 4x400 relay placed seventh in 4:14.20, and the boys 4x400 relay also finished seventh in 3:29.06.

Other McPherson final results included Kayden Friesen placing 10th in the boys 800 in 1:59.88; Kamryn Prescott taking 11th in the girls 800 in 2:27.51; Brynn Littlejohn finishing 10th in the girls shot put at 34-8.50 and ninth in the discus at 109-9; Ellie Herrera placing 11th in the girls high jump at 5-0; Jayren Stutzman finishing 11th in the boys high jump at 6-0; Piper Solofra placing 14th in the girls long jump at 15-7.25; Cayla Weimer taking 10th in the girls triple jump at 33-6.75; and Kinnick Anderson placing 17th in the boys triple jump at 40-9.75.

McPherson-Elyria Christian

Joy Beck placed 12th in the Class 1A girls 1,600-meter run in 5:46.65.

Moundridge

Kaizer Kanitz won the Class 2A boys long jump championship at 22-2.75 and finished third in the triple jump at 44-0.75.

Heath Churchill earned three medals. Churchill placed second in the boys 110-meter hurdles in 14.82 seconds, second in the 300 hurdles in 39.56 and second in the high jump at 6-8.

Cammi Unruh collected four medals. She finished third in the girls triple jump at 34-9, fourth in the long jump at 16-8.75, fifth in the 100 in 12.72 and fifth in the 200 in 25.71.

Moundridge’s girls 4x800 relay placed fourth in 10:04.38. The girls 4x400 relay finished sixth in 4:14.33, and the boys 4x400 relay placed sixth in 3:32.62.

Additional medal finishes included Dan Kuder placing fifth in the boys 800 in 2:03.00; Mackie Conkling taking seventh in the girls 800 in 2:24.75; Aspyn Stos finishing seventh in the girls shot put at 36-6.75; Brayden Elmore placing seventh in the boys pole vault at 13-0; and Annah Schrag taking eighth in the girls 400 in 1:00.52.

Other Moundridge final results included Elmore placing 21st in the boys high jump at 5-10 and the boys 4x800 relay finishing 11th in 8:42.60.

Newton

Newton’s boys 4x100-meter relay placed fourth in the Class 5A final in 42.67 seconds.

Amiyah Beard finished fifth in the girls shot put at 37-10.50. Ana Lawrence took sixth in the girls discus at 122-0. Delaney Fuller placed sixth in the girls long jump at 16-11.50 and eighth in the 100 in 12.46. Ryder Mapes finished seventh in the boys long jump at 21-11.50. Christian Henderson placed eighth in the boys shot put at 50-2.25. Ashley McMullin took eighth in the girls 300 hurdles in 48.99.

Other Newton final results included Maggie Kepley placing 18th in the girls 3,200 in 12:04.25 and 18th in the 1,600 in 5:41.41; Olivia Gonzalez finishing ninth in the girls shot put at 35-10; Henderson taking 13th in the boys discus at 140-3; Seth Esau placing 16th in the boys discus at 130-0; Orlando Gonzalez finishing 17th in the boys discus at 126-5; Jaxson Hiebert taking 17th in the boys javelin at 138-5; Steven Thomas placing 18th in the boys javelin at 137-5; McMullin finishing 10th in the girls triple jump at 35-11.25; Fuller taking 11th in the girls triple jump at 35-9; Mapes placing 13th in the boys triple jump at 41-7; and Landyn Rains finishing ninth in the boys 100 in 11.19.

Nickerson

Delaney Childs placed 12th in the Class 3A girls javelin at 110-0 and 18th in the discus at 94-3.

Kason Bright finished 14th in the boys long jump at 19-5.75. Bella Brinkley placed 15th in the girls triple jump at 33-3.75.

Pratt

Pratt won the Class 4A boys 4x400-meter relay championship with a time of 3:22.93.

Cade Liggett finished fourth in the boys 200 in 22.30 seconds. Tara Girard earned two medals, placing seventh in the girls 3,200 in 11:25.60 and eighth in the 1,600 in 5:22.57.

Emry Myers also collected two medals. The freshman finished seventh in the girls long jump at 16-10.25 and eighth in the 400 in 1:00.77. Arley Morrell placed seventh in the boys high jump at 6-2. The boys 4x800 relay took seventh in 8:19.23.

Other Pratt final results included the girls 4x800 relay placing ninth in 10:11.60; Johanna Forssberg finishing 14th in the girls high jump at 4-10; and Carlito Lara competing in the boys 800 but not recording a time.

Pratt-Skyline

Ruby Wooster placed 14th in the Class 1A girls 3,200-meter run in 13:22.25. Ely Robinson finished 16th in the boys 3,200 in 11:02.56.

Pretty Prairie

Lauren Detter earned two Class 1A distance medals. The sophomore placed second in the girls 1,600-meter run in 5:18.32 and third in the 800 in 2:22.23.

Pretty Prairie’s girls 4x800 relay finished fourth in 10:05.80. Kayleigh Vogl placed seventh in the girls triple jump at 35-9.25.

Other Pretty Prairie final results included Amity White placing ninth in the girls 3,200 in 12:31.96 and 15th in the 1,600 in 5:52.20, while the boys 4x800 relay finished 12th in 8:52.32.

Sedgwick

Noah Little won the Class 2A boys triple jump championship at 44-6.50 and placed second in the long jump at 21-11.50.

Derek Leggett finished seventh in the boys shot put at 47-0.25. Layton Benjamin placed 10th in the boys shot put at 45-4.25.

Sterling

Sterling produced four Class 2A individual championships.

Julia Kilgore swept the girls sprint titles, winning the 400-meter dash in 56.56 seconds and the 200 in 24.82.

Zane Farney swept the boys hurdles races. The senior won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.66 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 38.68.

Wyatt Little placed sixth in the boys pole vault at 13-0. Jacob Lewis finished eighth in the boys high jump at 6-2 and ninth in the 110 hurdles in 15.88.

Smoky Valley

Trista Spitler earned two Class 3A medals for Smoky Valley. The senior finished third in the girls triple jump at 37-11.75 and eighth in the high jump at 5-2.

Braelyn Whittaker placed fourth in the girls 100-meter dash in 12.65 seconds. Brylie Ricketts took sixth in the girls 400 in 59.30. Hope Willems finished eighth in the girls 3,200 in 12:16.99.

Smoky Valley’s boys 4x800 relay placed fifth in 8:22.29, while the boys 4x400 relay finished seventh in 3:41.87.
