As fireworks sales begin across Kansas, the City of Hutchinson and the Hutchinson Fire Department are reminding residents to follow local ordinances designed to keep Fourth of July celebrations safe.

According to the city licensed fireworks stands may sell fireworks from June 26 through July 7.

Within the Hutchinson city limits, fireworks may only be discharged June 30 through July 4, and only between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day.

The Hutchinson Fire Department also reminds residents that fireworks may only be used on private property. Any fireworks display on public property or at a special event requires a city special use permit.

Several types of fireworks and activities remain prohibited. Bottle rockets and sky lanterns (aerial luminarias) are illegal. Fireworks also cannot be discharged outside the approved dates and hours or in areas where a fire code official has determined conditions are too dangerous because of fire risk.

The city is also emphasizing accountability for fireworks use. Adults may not allow anyone under the age of 18 to violate the ordinance, and failing to supervise a minor is considered allowing the violation. Property owners, renters, lessees and others in control of a property may be held responsible for illegal fireworks activity occurring on their property or nearby right-of-way. Fireworks debris or remnants found on a property may also be used as evidence of illegal use.

City officials encourage residents to celebrate responsibly, follow local regulations and help prevent fires while enjoying the Independence Day holiday. The fireworks rules apply only within the City of Hutchinson.
