Kingman County is mourning the loss of District 1 Commissioner Patrick Joseph “Pat” Elpers, who passed away September 11, 2025, in Wichita at the age of 64.
Elpers, a lifelong farmer and stockman, was widely respected for his steady leadership and dedication to public service. Colleagues and community members alike recalled his fairness, foresight, and genuine care for the people he served.
“For Pat, service was never just a responsibility, it was a calling,” colleagues said in a statement. “His voice, vision, and values will be deeply missed.”
Commissioner Julie Lyon of District 2 reflected on the loss: “What a sad loss for the Elpers family, Kingman County, and Kansas in general. Pat was very level-headed—and pretty funny—and made decisions based on what was best for the people he served. My heart is heavy… and he will be missed.”
