KSHSAA releases 2026-27 classifications, enrollment figures

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released its classifications and enrollment figures for the 2026-27 school year.

The classifications are based on enrollment figures as of Sept. 21 and include students in grades nine through 12. Schools are divided among six classifications, with 36 schools each in Classes 6A, 5A and 4A, 64 schools each in Classes 3A and 2A, and the remaining schools placed in Class 1A.

Wichita East is the largest school in the state with an enrollment of 2,363 and leads Class 6A, which has a range of 2,363 to 1,228 students. JC Harmon moved up to 6A and is the smallest school in the classification at 1,228.

Hutchinson remains in Class 5A with an enrollment of 1,076. The 5A enrollment range is 1,227 to 752 students. Wichita West dropped from 6A to 5A and is now the largest school in the classification with 1,227 students.

Buhler remains in Class 4A with an enrollment of 673, the third-largest enrollment in the classification behind Ottawa at 702 and Bishop Miege at 684. McPherson is also in 4A with an enrollment of 645.

Several area schools remain grouped in Class 3A, including Hesston at 294, Nickerson and Smoky Valley at 236, Halstead at 230, Haven at 224 and Lyons at 205.

Trinity Catholic remains in Class 2A with an enrollment of 131. Other area 2A schools include Sedgwick at 152, Sterling at 150, Remington at 146, Moundridge at 142 and Inman at 113.

Pretty Prairie and Central Christian remain in Class 1A. Pretty Prairie has an enrollment of 77, while Central Christian has 64 students.

The newly released classifications do not apply to football. KSHSAA football classifications are set on a two-year cycle using enrollment from grades nine through 11. The current football classifications were established for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Under KSHSAA rules, enrollment ties are broken by using enrollment figures from the previous classification cycle.
