Fire Marshal: Pet dog, cat die in Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY — A space heater was responsible for starting a Tuesday morning Kansas house fire.

Just before 4:30a.m., crews responded to a fire in a home lat 427 NE Emmett Street in. Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the two-story home.

Firefighters kept the fire confined to the home and during a primary search found one dog and one cat deceased. A preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be accidental, associated with a space heater.

Estimated dollar loss – $25,000.00; of which $20,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $5,000.00 associated with contents loss.

Working smoke detectors were located within the structure of fire origin, according to Harrison. There were no other injuries reported.
