Vernon F. Christensen, 97, passed away Friday, November 5, 2021 at Hospice House in Hutchinson.  He was born March 9, 1924 in Osmond, Nebraska, the son of Raymond and Corinne (Welch) Christensen.

He worked road construction for Apax – Shears division.

Vernon served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945, attaining the rank of Motor Machinist Mate Second Class.

He was a member of Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson.  Vernon loved woodworking, helping at the Senior Center and was on the Buhler City Council for eleven years.

He was united in marriage to Vernadene D. Smith on December 14, 1944 in Elkhart, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on July 2, 2021.  They shared 76 years of marriage.

Vernon is survived by his granddaughter, Lora Carlson of the home; brother, Norman (Donna) Christensen of Garden City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vernadene, parents; daughter, Cheryl Carlson; sisters, Margery Johnson and Mabel VanSlyke; and brother, Donald Christensen.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Andover Lutheran Cemetery in Windom, Kansas.  A memorial mass will follow at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson with military honors.  Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Holy Cross in care of Buhler Mortuary, PO Box 589, Buhler, Kansas 67522.
