HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College’s defense made history Saturday afternoon.
Then the Blue Dragons added another chapter to one of junior college football’s premier rivalries.
No. 2 Hutchinson shut out top-ranked Iowa Western 26-0 at Gowans Stadium, handing the Reivers the first shutout loss in program history while extending the Blue Dragons’ own shutout streak to three games.
Hutchinson improved to 5-0 overall and avenged a 28-10 loss to Iowa Western in the 2025 NJCAA national championship game. The Blue Dragons also snapped the Reivers’ 14-game winning streak and took an 8-6 lead in the all-time series.
“Just very, very happy for our guys and staff,” Hutchinson coach Drew Dallas said. “We knew what this game meant and what quality opponent we were facing. So, opportunity for us to come out and make a statement. I thought they did that and handled it the right way.”
Hutchinson has now posted three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1950 after blanking Garden City, Butler and Iowa Western in succession.
The latest came against a Reiver program that had never been held scoreless. Saturday was Iowa Western’s 200th game in its 18th season of football.
“They just play at an elite level and they play with great energy,” Dallas said of his defense. “There’s good depth over there, and they just play hard. They’re well prepared. Coaching staff’s doing a great job putting them in good positions, and those guys are doing an unbelievable job of going out and executing.”
The Blue Dragon defense forced three more turnovers, raising its season total to 12 through five games. Hutchinson is now plus-11 in turnover margin.
Marcus Dawson intercepted Iowa Western quarterback Garrett Ames late in the third quarter, while Temerrick Johnson and Kelby Tyre recovered Reiver fumbles. Tyre’s recovery came after Iowa Western muffed a punt in the fourth quarter.
Even with the outcome decided, Hutchinson preserved the shutout on Iowa Western’s final possession. The Reivers drove to the Blue Dragon 8-yard line before Hutchinson stopped Daniel Larmie for no gain on third-and-1 and Dylan VanDyke for no gain on fourth down with 44 seconds remaining.
“Those guys wanted it in a bad way,” Dallas said. “You’re up 26-nothing there, and there’s a lot of guys not happy because they got the ball down there. … They gutted it out and stepped up and made the plays when we needed to, and kept them out of the end zone.”
While Iowa Western limited Hutchinson to only 24 rushing yards, quarterback Randy Phillips continued his strong start to the season.
Phillips completed 17 of 31 passes for a career-high 273 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. It was his second straight game with at least 250 passing yards, and he has now thrown multiple touchdown passes in each of Hutchinson’s first five games.
“We knew we were going to have to throw the football to be successful against their style of defense,” Dallas said. “Their front’s good, what they do schematically is good, and they create a lot of one-on-ones on the edges, and our guys made some big-time plays.”
Nakai Poole caught five passes for 128 yards and a touchdown, giving Hutchinson a 100-yard receiver for the second straight game. Jeremiah Looney added five catches for 84 yards.
Hutchinson struck first midway through the opening quarter.
Phillips connected with Looney for 39 yards during an eight-play, 67-yard drive before finding Devin Voltaire for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:09 remaining. Parker Grizzell’s extra point gave Hutchinson a 7-0 lead.
The Blue Dragons carried a 10-0 advantage into halftime after Aiden Bruce supplied one of the game’s biggest special-teams plays.
Bruce returned an Iowa Western punt 50 yards to the Reiver 32-yard line with five seconds remaining in the half. Grizzell followed with a 49-yard field goal as time expired.
“Special teams is going to matter in a big way,” Dallas said. “To be able to get a stop defensively, get a big return, pick that right back up and kick the field goal and make it — you felt like you just got a free gift. Great momentum going into halftime.”
Grizzell connected again from 43 yards on Hutchinson’s opening possession of the third quarter to make it 13-0.
Phillips then delivered the biggest offensive play of the afternoon.
Facing first-and-10 from the Hutchinson 27, Phillips found Poole for a 73-yard touchdown with 3:16 left in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 19-0.
The Blue Dragons put the game away early in the fourth quarter when Bravin Powell scored on a 1-yard run, capping an eight-play, 54-yard drive and extending the lead to 26-0.
Hutchinson finished with 297 total yards compared with 276 for Iowa Western. The Blue Dragons held the Reivers to 98 rushing yards and kept them scoreless despite Iowa Western possessing the ball for more than 30 minutes.
Jack Sells led Hutchinson with 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Jawon Springs added nine tackles, while Dylan Gill finished with six tackles, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.
Bruce also finished with 82 yards on four punt returns, while Denzel More averaged 45.8 yards on six punts, including a 69-yarder.
The victory gives Hutchinson another signature win in a series that has increasingly featured two of the nation’s dominant junior college programs.
For Dallas, however, Saturday’s result changes little about what comes next.
“We’ve raised the standard a little bit,” Dallas said. “We’ve got to make sure that we continue to practice like that and prepare the same way.”
Hutchinson returns to Jayhawk Conference play next Saturday on the road against Highland.
