Two dogs die in duplex fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded Saturday evening to a reported structure fire in the 1000 block of North Plum.

According to Division Chief of Operations Jeremy Unruh, crews were dispatched at approximately 6:55 p.m. and arrived to find minimal smoke visible from the exterior of a single-story duplex. Once inside the residence, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and active fire in the kitchen.

During the search, crews located two dogs inside the home and removed them; however, both animals were pronounced deceased. All occupants had safely exited prior to firefighters’ arrival.

The fire was brought under control quickly, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
