Firefighters rescue dog from fire at Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Authorities are working to determine the cause of a Thursday afternoon house fire.

Just before 5p.m. Thursday, crews responded to a fire in a home at 1244 SE Lawrence Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the single story residence.

Firefighters conducted a primary search of the structure. None of the occupants were home and but they were able to rescue a dog from the fire.

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as Undetermined. Estimated dollar loss – $12,500.00; of which $10,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $2,500.00 associated with contents loss, according to Harrison.

Working smoke detectors were not located within the home, according to Harrison.
