MEMPHIS, Tenn. — According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, former University of Kansas basketball standout Lagerald Vick has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a shooting in Memphis.
According to court documents, Vick, 29, was charged July 8 with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of employing a firearm with the intent to commit a felony.
According to an affidavit, Memphis Police officers responded during the early morning hours of July 5 to a report of a shooting involving a victim who arrived at Regional One Hospital.
Investigators said the victim, identified as Carlos Funzie, told police he had been attending a party on Madewell Drive in North Memphis when he was approached by a man carrying a handgun tucked under his arm. Funzie told officers the man confronted him verbally, and he attempted to de-escalate the situation before turning away.
Police allege the suspect then fired a single shot, striking Funzie in the back. The affidavit states the suspect pointed the handgun at the victim before fleeing the scene.
Vick was later identified as the suspect and charged in the case. Court records indicate his bond has been set at $1.5 million.
A Memphis native, Vick signed with the University of Kansas in 2015 and became one of the Jayhawks' top perimeter shooters. During his senior season in 2018, he set a Kansas program record by making eight consecutive three-point shots without a miss in a game.
Vick took a leave of absence from the Kansas basketball program in February 2019 for personal reasons before beginning a professional career overseas. He played for multiple international teams, including the Yulon Luxgen Dinos in Taiwan, with his most recent professional action coming in 2024.
The case remains under investigation.
