
Milferd Leland Schmidt, 92, of Canton, Kansas, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021 at Pine Village in Moundridge. He was born Feb. 19, 1928 in Goessel, the son of Peter B. and Susie (Goertz) Schmidt.
He grew up with his three brothers, Peter Jr., Harold, and younger brother, John Henry, and two sisters, Edna and Emma on the parental farm in McPherson County.
Milferd graduated from Goessel High School with the class of 1946.
He was baptized and became a lifetime member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church in Goessel.
Milferd served his 1-W service at Beatrice Hospital in Beatrice, Nebraska, and MCCVS at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine with other VSer’s. This service became a highlight of his life. After the service, Milferd returned to farming and became the second generation on the parental farm.
Milferd was united in marriage to Marilyn Flaming on May 1, 1953. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his son, Loren (Sandy) Schmidt of Canton, their son, Dustin (Lacey) and their two children, Jackson and Elizabeth, and two daughters, Kari and Madison; daughter, Anne (Mark) Burch of Goessel, their children, Andrea Schmidt and her children, Santana and Summer, Dana (Forest) and her daughter, River, and Josh and Nate; son-in-law, Bruce Berry and children, Zachary (Kadey) and Jadeyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan Berry; brothers, Pete Jr., Harold, Elmer and John Henry; and sisters, Edna Ensz and Emma Regier.
Private family services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, Goessel, with burial to take place prior to the service at the church cemetery. Friends may pay their respects to Milferd at Miller-Ott Funeral Home, Goessel, from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb.16. Please wear masks and social distance.
