KINGMAN, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs got back on track Monday night, using timely hitting and solid pitching to defeat the Kingman Islanders 8-1 at Islander Field.
Right-hander Carson Harrell earned the win for the Monarchs, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six. The Monarchs bullpen took care of the rest, keeping the Islanders scoreless the remainder of the game.
Kingman struck first in the bottom of the first when Luke Clayton lined a single to center, driving in Hayden Oviatt to put the Islanders up 1-0. But the Monarchs quickly responded in the top of the second. Jarrett Herrmann drove in Blake Bradford with a double to left to even the score at 1-1.
Herrmann came up big again in the fourth with a two-run double to center, scoring AJ Mustow and Bradford to give Hutchinson a 3-1 lead. In the fifth, the Monarchs extended the advantage with three more runs, capped by a fielder’s choice from Tyler Mitchell that brought Mustow home.
The Monarchs added insurance in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Legg and one more in the ninth when Bradford scored on a wild pitch.
Kingman starter Cooper Tannahill took the loss, going five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked three.
With the win, the Monarchs improved to 10-2 on the season and showed resilience after suffering a tough loss the night before.
Hutchinson returns to action Tuesday night for a home matchup at Hobart-Detter Field. First pitch is at 7pm with video and play-by-play on hutchpost.com and Monarchslive.tv.
