GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The No. 2 Hutchinson Community College football team closed the regular season with a 42-17 win over Garden City at Broncbuster Stadium.
The Blue Dragons finish the regular season with a 9-1 record, going 5-1 in Jayhawk Conference play. The win also guarantees Hutchinson a spot in the NJCAA national semifinals, which will be played on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Hutchinson went into Saturday tied for second in the country with Georgia Military College, both teams receiving 150 points in the latest poll.
The top four teams in the final poll, which will be released next weekend, qualify for the national semifinals. The top two seeds will host the semifinal, with No. 1 hosting No. 4 and No. 2 hosting No. 3.
Waymond Jordan Jr. secured his eighth 100-plus yard rushing game of the season, going for 132 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Samari Collier threw for 116 yards and three scores.
Tre Brown hauled in three catches for 50 yards and two touchdowns to lead he receivers. Ben Prosper also hauled in a touchdown from 17 yards out.
The Blue Dragon defense finished the game with three takeaways, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. Hutchinson held Dejaun Lacy, who was second in the conference in rushing yards to just 51 yards on 18 carries, for under three yards per carry.
HutchCC held Garden City to 1 of 14 on third-down conversions.
No. 1 Iowa Western edged Highland, 21-14, while No. 4 NW Mississippi blasted No. 7 East Central, 34-7 to claim the MACCC title. The final NJCAA poll will be released next weekend, after the conclusion of the final two games still to be played.
