EMPORIA β Sophomores Joshua Sweetnam and Kebba Makalo both broke their own school records to lead the Hutchinson Community College at the Emporia State Relays on Thursday at Welch Stadium.
Sweetnam took over the NJCAA Division I lead in the shot put, winning the ESU Relays with a school-record mark of 60 feet, 3 3/4 inches (18.38 meters). He beat his own record of 58-11 1/4 set last week at the Tabor College Invitational. Sweetnam also placed 16th in the hammer throw with a mark of 145-7 (44.39 meters).
Makalo broke his own Blue Dragon 100-meter record with an ESU Relays winning time of 10.03 seconds. He beat his own record of 10.06 seconds set last season at the Region 6 championships. Makalo was just .01 seconds off a second record on Thursday, placing second in the 200 meters with a personal-record time of 20.49 seconds. That mark ranks No. 2 in the NJCAA and No. 2 in the Blue Dragon outdoor charts.
Freshman Eseban Oses Campos won the ESU Relay 1,500 meters with a national qualifying time of 3:35.75. That time is sixth fastest in Blue Dragon menβs outdoor history. Oses Campos placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:37.08.
Other top Blue Dragon performances on Thursday:
+ Keith Rogers placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.60 seconds.
+ Esteban Ortega placed third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:33.75.
+ Dennis Cheriuyot was fifth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:38.77.
+ Tristan Sanders placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 21-9 1/2 (6.64 meters). Sanders was seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 42-7 (12.98 meters).
