WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State University announced Tuesday it is cutting its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs, effective immediately.

The university said the move comes after a review of its athletic department and how resources are being used. WSU said rising operating costs made it necessary to consider changes while trying to protect the long-term financial health and competitiveness of Shocker athletics.

Wichita State athletic director Kevin Saal called the decision difficult and said it was not made lightly. He also praised men’s coach Judd Easterling, women’s coach Tom McCurdy and the student-athletes for the way they represented the university.

WSU said the cost of running and maintaining NCAA Division I programs continues to grow faster than the department’s ability to control expenses.

Student-athletes who stay at Wichita State will keep their current financial aid, as long as they meet NCAA and university eligibility requirements. Those who decide to transfer will receive support from the university during that process.
